21st Century Learning and Smartphone Preference as a Learning Media

Smartphones are a technological device that is very close to students nowadays, but there are still many negative views regarding their use. 21st century education demands a transformation in learning methods to accommodate developments in information technology in the learning process. One tool that is increasingly dominant in everyday life is the smartphone. This article discusses the integration of 21st century learning with the preference for using smartphones as a learning medium in the school environment. This research explores the impact of smartphone use on student learning, involving factors such as technology availability and student responses to smartphone-based learning. The research was conducted at Indraprasta University, PGRI Jakarta. The research method used was a descriptive-qualitative approach. Qualitative research aims to understand, explain, and describe phenomena or problems from a more in-depth perspective. This research aims to prepare students to maximize the use of smartphones as a support for 21st century learning. This research shows that using smartphones as a learning medium can improve the quality of learning and develop 21st-century skills such as critical, creative, collaborative, and communicative.

STRATEGIC ANALYSIS OF INDIVILDUALS’ SMARTPHONE PREFERENCES THROUGH CHAID ALGORITHM

The global smartphone market is one of the most dynamically developing markets with high competition. The presence of high-tech products in the smartphone market forces companies to act more cautiously and strategically. The success of companies depends on their level of meeting the demands of smartphone users. To this end, this study aims to determine the factors that are affected by the smartphone preferences of individuals and the effect level of these factors on company strategies. For this purpose, in this study, a survey was conducted in the TRA2 Region located in the east of Turkey. The obtained data from the survey was evaluated using the CHAID algorithm. In the study, it was seen that smartphone users liked the Apple the most in terms of perceived service quality. In addition, it has been observed that the highest level of expectation in terms of expected service quality is concentrated on the Apple brand. On the other hand, the most preferred Xiaomi was found to have the lowest brand loyalty.

An integrated machine learning and DEMATEL approach for feature preference and purchase intention modelling

This article models the purchasing intention of young Indian consumers for branded smartphones by analysing their individual preferences for the different features of the smartphone. This article selects thirteen features for analysis, and the respondents are asked to rate, which are further used to model the mentioned purchasing intention. The features are selected using three quantitative methods: uncertainty calculation, correlation and Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL). The uncertainty indicates the variance in the respondents’ preference for a particular feature. So, the features with highly uncertain preference values are undesired. The correlation analysis indicates the feature preferences impacting the buying intention of a branded smartphone. The hierarchy and the causality for the impact of feature preferences on the branded smartphone preference are identified based on DEMATEL. The selected features are used to model the purchasing intention based on K nearest neighbour (KNN), a machine learning technique. The result is compared with the other three machine learning techniques for classification, namely, C4.5, CART, and logistic regression. The result indicates the superiority of KNN based model, which is further used for building a brand switching intention model.

Consumers' smartphone preferences in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic

With its high population and high rate of young population, Turkey has an important potential in the field of consumer electronics. During the COVID-19 pandemic period, individuals' purchasing power decreased due to economic contractions in every country and individuals showed a more frugal attitude. This study aims to evaluate the Turkish smartphone market and understand the consumer preferences toward smartphones during the pandemic. For this purpose, a conjoint analysis was conducted by obtaining data from 452 respondents who were asked to evaluate products according to their brand, price, second-hand value, camera quality, and storage capacity. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that the brand, price, and camera features had the highest utility scores reflecting the preferences of the Turkish consumers. Moreover, Chinese and Turkish brands were found to still hold a disadvantageous position in consumer perceptions having negative utility scores.

DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY ON SMARTPHONE PREFERENCE AMONG STUDENTS IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

This study investigated smartphone preference among undergraduate and postgraduate students in Nigerian universities. Specifically, the study examined the extent to which students’ demographic attributes such as gender, age, usage experience and educational level influence their preference for smartphones. The study also identified and ranked smartphone brands based on selected factors like brand name, brand attachment, perceived usefulness, social influence, price, aesthetic value and product design and features. A cross-sectional survey research design was used for the study. The study population comprised all full-time university students in Nigeria both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Questionnaire was designed and electronically administered using Google Form to the target respondents. After three weeks (10th June to 1st July 2020), five hundred and forty-three (543) responses were collated. However, seventy-eight (78) were found to be invalid. As a result, four hundred and sixty-five (465) responses that formed the sample size were used for the study. The data collected were statistically analyzed using frequency table, percentages, mean, standard deviation and t-test with the aid of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The study found that Samsung is the most preferred smartphone among students. It was also revealed that the first three most important factors that influence students' preference for smartphones are brand name, perceived usefulness, and design/features. The study revealed that demographic attributes do not significantly influence smartphone preference among university students. The study, therefore, recommends that demographic attributes such as gender, age, usage experience and programme should not be significantly considered by manufacturers and marketers of smartphones in product differentiation.

Optimizing Smartphone Recommendation System through Adaptation of Genetic Algorithm and Progressive Web Application

The ubiquity of smartphone use nowadays is undeniable exponentially growing, replaced cell phones, and a host of other gadgets replaced personal computers to a certain degree. Different smartphones specifications and overwhelmed smartphone advertisements have caused broader choices for the customer. Many qualitative and quantitative criteria need to consider, and customers want to select the most suitable smartphones. They face difficulties deciding the best smartphone according to their budget and desire. Thus, a new method is needed to recommend the customer according to their preferences and budget. This study proposed a method for optimizing the recommendation system of the smartphone using the genetic algorithm (GA). Moreover, it is implemented with a progressive web application (PWA) platform to ensure the customer can use it on multiple platforms. They can choose the platform to input any specification of smartphone preferences besides the budget. Functional testing results showed the achievement of the study’s objectives, and usability testing using UEQ managed to receive feedback of 93.64%, with an overall average mean of 4.682. Therefore, according to the outcome, it can be concluded that optimizing the smartphone recommendations through GA enables the customer to ease the comparison based on the obtained optimum result.

Future Mobile Device Usage, Requirements, and Expectations of Physicians in German University Hospitals: Web-Based Survey.

BackgroundThe use of mobile devices in hospital care constantly increases. However, smartphones and tablets have not yet widely become official working equipment in medical care. Meanwhile, the parallel use of private and official devices in hospitals is common. Medical staff use smartphones and tablets in a growing number of ways. This mixture of devices and how they can be used is a challenge to persons in charge of defining strategies and rules for the usage of mobile devices in hospital care.ObjectiveTherefore, we aimed to examine the status quo of physicians’ mobile device usage and concrete requirements and their future expectations of how mobile devices can be used.MethodsWe performed a web-based survey among physicians in 8 German university hospitals from June to October 2019. The online survey was forwarded by hospital management personnel to physicians from all departments involved in patient care at the local sites.ResultsA total of 303 physicians from almost all medical fields and work experience levels completed the web-based survey. The majority regarded a tablet (211/303, 69.6%) and a smartphone (177/303, 58.4%) as the ideal devices for their operational area. In practice, physicians are still predominantly using desktop computers during their worktime (mean percentage of worktime spent on a desktop computer: 56.8%; smartphone: 12.8%; tablet: 3.6%). Today, physicians use mobile devices for basic tasks such as oral (171/303, 56.4%) and written (118/303, 38.9%) communication and to look up dosages, diagnoses, and guidelines (194/303, 64.0%). Respondents are also willing to use mobile devices for more advanced applications such as an early warning system (224/303, 73.9%) and mobile electronic health records (211/303, 69.6%). We found a significant association between the technical affinity and the preference of device in medical care (χs2=53.84, P<.001) showing that with increasing self-reported technical affinity, the preference for smartphones and tablets increases compared to desktop computers.ConclusionsPhysicians in German university hospitals have a high technical affinity and positive attitude toward the widespread implementation of mobile devices in clinical care. They are willing to use official mobile devices in clinical practice for basic and advanced mobile health uses. Thus, the reason for the low usage is not a lack of willingness of the potential users. Challenges that hinder the wider adoption of mobile devices might be regulatory, financial and organizational issues, and missing interoperability standards of clinical information systems, but also a shortage of areas of application in which workflows are adapted for (small) mobile devices.

Smartphone preferences and brand loyalty: A discrete choice model reflecting the reference point and peer effect

Brand loyalty and interest have significant impacts on consumers' smartphone choices. What about brand loyalty and interest of smartphone in South Korea where Samsung originates from? This study investigates brand loyalty and interest and how they are affected by the satisfaction of innovative peers in South Korea. An asymmetric discrete choice model with reference-dependent preferences is applied for the analysis. The estimation results show that in South Korea the brand is the most important attribute of smartphone and Apple is the strongest in brand loyalty. Whether consumers who are currently owners of Apple smartphones continue to maintain the same brand in their next purchasing depends not only on their brand loyalty but also on the satisfaction of their highly innovative peers who currently own the Apple. On the other hand, Samsung's brand loyalty is lower than that of Apple, but the brand interest is the highest. Additionally, in all smartphone brands, satisfaction with smartphone brands owned by innovative peers has a significant impact on consumers' interest.

Determination of smartphone brand pereferences via Markov chain analysis: a case study on university 1st -graders

Smart phones that are getting functional as much as computers coupled with the development in technology are the most frequently used communication instruments in our lives. This widespread use of smartphones has enabled them to focus on consumer work by influencing the efforts of manufacturers to prioritize brands. The purpose of this study is to determine smartphone preferences and to estimate the market share of mobile phone manufacturers in the long term by determining the transitions between the intended brands. The extensive usage of smart phones, ensure the producing companies efforts affectionally to focus towards consumers to bring their brands into the forefront. To determine the smart phone brand preference a questionnaire is conducted on 200 first grade students in the university departments Applied Sciences International Trade and Banking and Finance department in Celal Bayar University. From all this questionnaires, it is seen that 153 questionnaires could be used because of missing data. Participants of the questionnaires are asked about their currently used smart phone brands and the previously used smart phone brands. The Markov Chains are used in the analyze of the smart phone brand preferences. The Markov transition probability matrixes are constituted considering the numbers between the transitions from a smart phone to another smart phone brand. Among the phone brands that students have used before, Samsung maintains leadership with 47%, followed by Nokia with 18 %, iPhone with 15.6% and Sony with 6,5 % . Among the phone brands used by students at the moment, Samsung has reached 32% with the iPhone, 27% with the iPhone, 12.4% with LG and 8.4% with GM. After the analyses it is concluded that the most preferred brands would be 45 % for Iphone, 24% for Samsung, 10% for LG, 6% for General Motors and 5% for Sony in long term.

Identifying design feature factors critical to acceptance and usage behavior of smartphones

Smartphones are increasingly used all over the world. However, the effects of smartphone design features on smartphone acceptance and usage behavior are not well known. Thus, in this study, a questionnaire was constructed to identify design feature factors that are critical to the acceptance and usage behavior of smartphones. A total of 842 participants completed the questionnaire. Acceptance was measured on the basis of perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU), and intention to use (IU). Results of exploratory factor analysis indicated that users’ preference for smartphones consisted of the following nine factors: Interface element design, Smartphone characteristics, Physical characteristics, Touch feedback, Operation design, Display screen, Connectivity, Button, and Application. Results of hierarchical regression analysis indicated that Smartphone characteristics, Touch feedback, and Display screen significantly influenced PEOU. PU was significantly related to Smartphone characteristics, Application, and PEOU. IU was significantly associated with Smartphone characteristics, PEOU, and PU. The usage behavior of smartphones was significantly related to Connectivity, Interface element design, PEOU, PU, and IU. The proposed model comprising demographic variables, design features, and acceptance-related variables could explain 76.5% of the variance in the usage behavior of smartphones.

The purpose of this paper is to assess smartphones in terms of their users. As a result of literature review, smartphones assesment criterias that are social needs, social influences,convenience,dependency and purchase behaviour are surveyed .200 smartphone users live in the city centre of Kastamonu are surveyed in this study. Results via frequency analysis,Stage Ranking Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis revealed the consumers’ smartphone preference reasons,usage and dependendency level.Factors in the literature are confirmed by the confirmatory analysis. Results via MANOVA analysis reveal that there are differences between smartphone users consideration in terms of their demographic features.

Son yıllarda, cep telefonu bir kişilerarası iletişim cihazından akıllı telefon olarak bilinen bir multimedya makinesine dönüşmüştür. Akıllı telefon olarak atfedilen bu cihazlar, tüketicilere günlük kişisel ve iş hayatlarında gelişmiş yetenek ve özellikler sunan, programlanabilir cep telefonlarıdır. Hızla değişen cep telefonu pazarında yeni nesil akıllı telefon üreticileri, toplumsal baskının da etkisiyle tüketicileri bu yeni teknolojiyi satın almaya ve kullanmaya yöneltmektedir. Farklı özellikleriyle çok fonksiyonlu teknolojik araçlar olarak sunulan akıllı telefonların, kullanıcıları tarafından hangi kriterler açısından tercih edildiğinin ve hangi özelliklerinin kullanılıp hangilerinin kullanılmadığının tespit edilmesi önem arz etmektedir. Bu araştırmanın ana amacı, akıllı telefonların kullanıcıları tarafından değerlendirmelerini ölçmeye çalışmaktır. Literatür incelemesi sonucu elde edilen akıllı telefonları değerlendirme kriterleri- sosyal ihtiyaç, sosyal baskı, bağımlılık, hayatı kolaylaştırma- incelenmiştir. . Çalışma kapsamında Kastamonu şehir merkezinde yaşayan 200 akıllı telefon kullanıcısına yönelik anket uygulaması yapılmıştır. Anket yoluyla elde edilen bilgilere Yüzde Analizi, Mertebeli Dereceleme, uygulanması sonucu Analizler sonucunda kullanıcıların akıllı telefonları tercih nedenleri, kullanım ve bağımlılık düzeyleri tespit edilmiştir. Literatürde yer alan faktörler doğrulayıcı faktör analizi ile doğrulanmıştır. Çok Değişkenli Varyans Analizi (MANOVA) ile demografik özelliklerine göre gruplara ayrılan akıllı telefon kullanıcılarının değerlendirmeleri karşılaştırılarak aralarında fark olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.

Technology for health: A qualitative study on barriers to using the iPad for diet change

Emergence of tablet computers has led to interest in their use to impact health-related behaviors of users. However, little is known regarding which devices are most effective for changing these behaviors, and whether or not these devices or accompanying applications (apps) are feasible or desired vehicles for behavior change. Four focus groups were conducted with students from a Western university who were given iPads to download diet-related apps. Participants were asked questions about preferences regarding iPad functionality, app functionality, and the likelihood of using apps and iPads for facilitating diet-related behavior change in the future. Two key themes emerged from focus group discussions on diet-related apps for iPads and their usefulness to facilitate behavior change. The first theme, lack of iPad practicality, contained three subthemes: inconvenient mid-way technology, internet access barriers, and smart-phone preference. The second theme that emerged was attitudes towards apps in general. Three subthemes were identified under the second theme: too intensive; positive functions not specific to iPads; and lack of reliable/trustworthy information. This paper is the first, to this author’s knowledge, to report the use of qualitative methods to study the practicality of using apps and iPads in changing dietrelated behaviors. Early generations of iPads may not be effective devices for facilitating behavior change among college students; and diet-related apps seem to have poor functionality that lead to cessation of use.
