Conflict resolution styles as predictors of marital adjustment and marital satisfaction: an actor–partner interdependence model

ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to examine the mediating role of marital adjustment on the relationship between conflict resolution styles and marital satisfaction in terms of actor and partner effects. It was hypothesized that the marital adjustment mediates the effect of conflict resolution styles on marital satisfaction. One hundred and fifty-five married couples participated in the study. Conflict Resolution Styles Inventory, Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale, and Relationship Satisfaction Scale were used to collect the data. The hypotheses were tested using Actor Partner Interdependence Model (Kenny et al., 2006). According to the results, both wives’ and husbands’ positive problem-solving styles predicted their own marital satisfaction via marital adjustment. In addition, husbands’ positive and negative problem-solving styles predicted both their own and their wives’ marital satisfaction through marital adjustment.

Child Care Arrangements, Division of Household Labor and Other Employment Based Familial Predictors of Marital Adjustment Among Husbands of Employed Females in Pakistan

ABSTRACTThe primary purpose of the current study was to investigate the influence of division of household labor, child care arrangements, wife’s financial contribution, work-schedule of wife, perception of wife employment and wife’s work preference were contributing to marital adjustment of husbands of working married women. Additionally, it explored the role of wife’s financial contribution, perception of wife’s employment and wife’s work preference in formation of marital adjustment among husbands of working women. The data were collected through a self-structured questionnaire from 283 husbands of employed married women with one year of marital duration and at least one child. The data were collected from the city of Gujrat, province of Punjab, Pakistan. Factor analysis was run for reliability and validity analysis was executed to examine the validity of the existing scales used in the current study. Multiple linear regression analysis was used for model fit. Division of household labor, child care arrangements, wife’s financial contributions, wife’s work-schedule, the perception of wife’s employment, and wife’s work preferences contributed to the marital adjustment of husbands of working married women. Our results seemed to reflect fluctuating dimensions of gender role ideologies among families. Incorporating new predictors of marital adjustment into literature of marriage and family has been a sociological significance of the current study.

Three-factor Predictors of Marital Adjustment among Couples in Abeokuta Metropolis, Ogun State, Nigeria

The importance of couples understanding their personality characteristic is germane to marital bliss and adjustment. This study examined self-esteem, emotional intelligence and coping skills as predictors of marital adjustment among couples in Abeokuta metropolis. This study adopted a non-experimental ex-post facto research. It is also correlative in nature. The target population for the study comprised all the married persons in Anglican Communion Churches in Abeokuta South and North Local Government Areas in Ogun State, Nigeria. Using simple, random sampling technique a total of fifteen married persons were selected from each of the churches, making a total of three hundred and thirty, married persons (330) from Abeokuta North and South Local Government Areas, Ogun State. The study used four instruments Coping Style Questionnaire (CSQ), Self-Esteem Scale Questionnaire (SESQ), Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (EIQ), and Marital Adjustment Questionnaire (MAQ) to generate data for the study. Frequency counts and percentage were used for presenting the data obtained from the questionnaire. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression analysis were used for testing the null hypotheses. The result shows that there is no significant relationship between coping style and marital adjustment, that there is no significant relationship between self-esteem, emotional intelligence, and marital adjustment. The study recommended among others that couples should endeavor to accentuate attitude of co-operative understanding, valuing partnership, demonstrating trust, general good will towards one another and positive values in their marriage while family counselors should organize workshops, seminars and conferences whereby couples would be sensitized on causes of marital adjustment and resolution strategies for resolving marital mal-adjustment.

Factors Predicting Marital Adjustment in Omani Society

Background/Purpose: The aim of this research was to examine marital adjustment in Omani society. It also aims to investigate the factors that might predict marital adjustment. Method: To measure marital adjustment, a specific questionnaire was designed for the purpose of this study. The sample included 255couples who came from different regions in Oman.This sample consisted of 171 husbands and 83 wives. The survey validity was assessed using face validity. Reliability of the questionnaire was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and test-rets methods. The value of Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .93., and the value for test-retest was .56. Social desirability of the respondents was also examined using social desirability scale. Results: This study revealed that level of marital adjustment among couples was high. Gender, age, number of children, and divorce were the main predictors of marital adjustment among the study sample. Conclusion: This study has significant implications for marital counselors.

Psychological distress, self esteem and emotional dependency of married individuals as predictors of marital adjustment

In current literature there are studies that have evaluated the relationship between psychological distresses, self-esteem, emotional dependency and marital adjustment. This study aims to contribute to the expansion of this area of research concentrating on especially Turkish case which seems to be considerably different one from both the United States and other Western countries. It is concluded that marital adjustment is higher for the men than for the women. Psychological distress negatively predicts marital adjustment for both women and men, whereas self-esteem and emotional dependency predicts it positively and psychological distress levels are higher for the women than for the men. Some factors for this could be subordinated status of women at home, lack of sufficient income, violence, social and economic inequalities, traditional duties that should be performed in daily affairs. Those in low income class have lower marital adjustment, self-esteem, emotional dependency compared to those in middle and high income classes. There is no doubt that economic problems enhance the preoccupation with financial issues in many couples. Higher-Post Graduate educational level had higher marriage adjustment scores compared to individuals with Primary-Secondary School educational level. Higher/Post Graduate educational level had lower psychological distress scores compared to individuals with Primary-Secondary School educational level and High School.

Endorsement of Traditional Male Role Norms and Marital Adjustment among Turkish Men

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between married men’s level of male role norms and their level of marital adjustment. Male role norms were examined as predictors of marital adjustment in Turkish married men using a Turkish version of the Marital Adjustment Scale and the Male Role Norms Inventory. Academic and managerial staff from Ondokuz Mayıs University participated in the research. The study sample consisted of 183 male participants, all of whom had been married to a member of the opposite sex for at least one year. The correlations among the study variables indicate that avoidance of femininity, restrictive emotionality, aggression, achievement status, self-reliance, and attitudes toward sex are significantly related to marital adjustment. Additionally, the results reveal that male role norms are a predictor of marital adjustment. We conclude that marital adjustment is determined by avoidance of femininity, restrictive emotionality, aggression, achievement status, and attitudes toward sex.

Dyadic Adjustment and Spiritual Activities in Parents of Children with Cystic Fibrosis.

Children’s diseases can negatively impact marital adjustment and contribute to poorer child health outcomes. To cope with increased marital stress and childhood diseases severity, many people turn to spirituality. While most studies show a positive relationship between spirituality and marital adjustment, spirituality has typically been measured only in terms of individual behaviors. Using the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and Daily Phone Diary data from a sample of 126 parents of children with cystic fibrosis as a context for increased marital stress, spiritual behavior of mother-father dyads and of whole families were used as predictors of marital adjustment. Frequency and duration of individual, dyadic and familial spiritual activities correlated positively with dyadic adjustment. Significant differences in spiritual activities existed between couples with marital adjustment scores above and below the cutoff for distress. The only significant factors in regressions of spiritual activities on marital adjustment scores were number of pulmonary exacerbations and parent age. Higher odds of maintaining a marital adjustment score greater than 100 were significantly associated with spending approximately twelve minutes per day in individual, but not conjugal or familial, spiritual activities. The Daily Phone Diary is a feasible tool to study conjugal and familial activities and their relationships with beliefs and attitudes, including spirituality.

Marital Hardiness as a Predictor of Marital Adjustment in Professionals with Working Spouse

The study aims to investigate whether marital hardiness predicts marital adjustment in professionals in the fields of Medicine, Information Technology and Education with a working spouse. An ex-post-facto survey research was adopted for the present study.The sample size for thes tudy was 345(N=345)of which ll6 were males and 229 were females. The age of the individuals who were part of the study was 22 to 58 years. The average age of the husbands was 38.22 years and that of the wives was 34.53 years.The method of purposive sampling was used for the selection of sample. The Marital Hardiness Scale (Sangeetha 2009) and the ABC Scale of Marital Relationship (Nappinnai 2006) were the tools used for the study. The independent sample t-test, One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Pearson's product-moment correlation and multiple regressions were the statistical techniques used for data analysis. The results show that among professionals in the fields of Medicine, Information Technology and Education with a working spouse profession, gender, type and nature of marriage, type of family, presence of an adolescent child, chronological age, age at marriage, years of marriage and number of children do not contribute to marital adjustment. Marital hardiness is related to marital adjustment. Quality of relationship, a dimension of marital hardiness has emerged as a significant predictor of marital adjustment.

Environmental Factors as Predictors of Marital Adjustment among Married Persons in Delta State of Nigeria:

The study examines the nature anad degree of correlation and degree of correlation between emotional expression, communication flow, financial management, work involvement and marital adjustment among married persons in Delta State, Nigeria. To give the study a direction, one stepwise hypothesis was raised and tested on 0.05 level of significance. The study is a survey and multi-stage sampling technique was used to select a sample of 2561 respondents from nine local government areas out of the three senatorial districts of Delta S tate. The instrument used in this study is titled Marital Adjustment and Personality Types Inventory (MAPTI). It has reliability co-ef ficient of 0.90. The face and content of this instrument was duly established. The results show that the variables of emotional expression, communication flow, financial management and work involvement were both correlates and predictors of marital adjustment among married persons in Delta State. To confirm the independence of the predictive capacity of each variable, residual statistics: that is Cook-D test was used. It confirmed the reliability and strength of these variables in predicting the dependent variable (marital adjustment). The implications of the findings for counseling practice were also identified.

Correlates of Marital Adjustment among Married Persons in Delta State of Nigeria

This study examined the extent to which variables of emotional expression, communication flow, financial management and work involvement can predict marital adjustment among married persons in Delta state, Nigeria. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. 2561 married persons were used to select a sample size of purposeful sampling technique. Data were gathered using a questionnaire titled Marital Adjustment and Personality Types Inventory (MAPTI). It has reliability of .90. The analysis of the data generated from the respondents revealed that emotional expression, financial management, communication flow, work involvement are significant correlates and predictors of marital adjustment. Consequently, it was recommended that counselling services should focus on acquisition of skills for the general improvement of marital interaction among married persons.

An Internet-Based Examination of Sexual Behaviors and Marital Adjustment among Self-Identified Gay and Bisexual Heterosexually Married Male Users of Online Chat Rooms

The Internet has drastically changed the ways individuals interact and connect sexually. While there has been significant research on online sexual activities among persons from various populations, little investigation has been done into the behaviors and marital adjustment of self-identified gay and bisexual heterosexually married men. In this article, the results of 342 self-identified gay and bisexual heterosexually married men who use Internet-based chat rooms are presented. The types of online sexual behaviors and face-to-face sexual behaviors are discussed, the relationship between marital adjustment and sexual orientation is investigated, and predictors of marital adjustment are provided.

Socioeconomic status as a predictor of marital adjustment in working women

The purpose of the present research was to determine the extent to which Socioeconomic Status in Pakistani scenario can predict Marital Adjustment with special reference to working women. After detailed literature review it was hypothesized that Marital Adjustment would be more among working women of high Socioeconomic Status as compared to working women of low and middle Socioeconomic Status. Sample of the present research consisted of 150 married working women divided into three groups of subjects each consisting of fifty women. These groups comprised of low, middle and high socioeconomic classes. Dyadic Adjustment Scale was administered in order to measure Marital Adjustment of the entire sample. One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was done to compare the difference in the level of Marital Adjustment of working women belonging to low, middle and high Socioeconomic Status. However the difference between the Marital Adjustments of the three socioeconomic groups was found to be insignificant.

Psychological predictors of marital adjustment in breast cancer patients

The present research consists of two studies examining the psychological predictors of marital adjustment in Chinese breast cancer patients and their husbands in Hong Kong. In Study 1, measures of marital adjustment, body image, dyadic perspective-taking and perception of partner's dyadic perspective-taking were administered to a sample of 86 breast cancer patients and 46 husbands of these patients. In Study 2, semi-structured interviews were conducted as a supplement of Study 1. Results showed that four psychological variables were found to be significantly associated with the breast cancer patients' marital adjustment, namely the patients' self perspective-taking and the patients' perception of their husbands' perspective-taking, the husbands' perception of partners' perspective-taking and the husbands' perception of their wives' physical appearance. Moreover, two psychological variables were found to be associated with the husbands' marital adjustment, namely the husbands' self perspective-taking and their psychological distress.

These findings help to refine developmental models of marital dysfunction, which often overlook the role of aggression, and can provide information for prevention programs for marital distress, which typically do not distinguish between aggressive and nonaggressive couples.

Predictors of Marital Adjustment During the First Two Years

ABSTRACT Marital difficulties for many couples occur early in marriage. Approximately 21% of marriages end within the first two years and 40% end by the fourth year. The consequences for individuals and their families affect emotional well-being, financial stability, and child development. A sample of 93 couples participated in a study in which data were collected on marriage at five intervals between one month and two years. During the first months, age, income, and education have some impact on marital adjustment but this influence weakens in time. Examining results across the two year interval suggests that interpersonal trust, desired spousal behavior change, and emotional maturity are highly associated with marital adjustment. In particular, marital processes of interpersonal trust and desired spousal behavior change at one month are predictive of marital adjustment at two years.

The Impact of Breast Cancer and Its Treatment on Marital Functioning

This article reviews the research that has examined the impact of breast cancer and its treatment on the patient's marital relationship. Breast cancer and its treatment affect not only the patient, but also her intimate partner and their relationship, including their communication, sexual relationship, and role identities. Both positive and negative effects of the experience have been identified. Predictors of marital adjustment following breast cancer are also reviewed, including demographic factors, illness factors, and characteristics of the couple. The strongest predictor of the impact of the cancer experience appears to be the premorbid quality of the relationship. A methodological critique identifies limitations of past research, and suggestions for future research are addressed. Finally, two theoretical paradigms that may account for the impact of breast cancer on relationships are discussed.

Macroscopic marital interaction coding systems: Are they interchangeable?

The present study sought to determine the convergent validity of two macroscopic marital interaction coding systems: the Marital Interaction Coding System-Global and the Global Couple Interaction Coding System. The sample consisted of 40 couples who completed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the Potential Problem Checklist and a 30-min problem solving interactional task. Filmed interactions were coded by separate teams of observers using the Marital Interaction Coding System-Global and the Global Couple Interaction Coding System. Results showed that interobserver agreement, as assessed through intraclass correlations, was satisfactory for both coding systems. Between-system comparisons revealed that convergent validity coefficients were moderate; thus, it seems premature to conclude that macroscopic coding systems are interchangeable. Finally, multiple regression analyses indicated that both systems contained significant non-redundant behavioral predictors of marital adjustment. Implications of these results are discussed.
