Prediction of ground-borne vibration from random traffic flow and road roughness: Theoretical model and experimental validation

With the densification and closer distance to buildings of road traffic network in urban areas, the assessment and control of environmental vibrations becomes the focus of attention, in which the prediction of traffic flow-induced ground vibration is very critical. However, few studies have been reported on the theoretical prediction method of traffic flow-induced ground vibration from the perspective of stochastic theory. The present work contributes to the perfection and innovation of the current methodologies for the prediction of traffic flow-induced ground vibration. In this paper, a semi-analytical and semi-numerical method for predicting traffic flow induced ground vibrations is developed, in which the random effect generated from traffic flow and road roughness is considered by establishing the vehicle-road-soil coupling model. Aiming to predict the long-term vibration and transient vibration induced by road traffic flow, the average and the adverse velocity levels are used as the evaluation indicators. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by an on-site experiment, and the characteristics of ground vibrations are investigated in time and frequency domains, respectively. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively predict the road traffic flow-induced ground vibrations, and the randomness of both traffic flow and road roughness cannot be neglected. For the experimental site, the main frequency band of ground vibrations concentrates on 7–25 Hz, and the predominant center frequency is 12.5 Hz, resulting from the resonance between the overlapping dominant frequency bands of the dynamic vehicle loads and the natural frequency of the soil.

A frequency-domain formulation for predicting ground-borne vibration induced by underground train on curved track

The vibration caused by underground trains running on a curved track often has a greater impact on residents, buildings, or sensitive instruments than that of a straight track. A formulation including two frequency-domain models for simulating the generation and propagation of train-induced vibrations is presented in this study. Based on an analytical model of a curved track subjected to moving forces, an approach to determine the wheel–rail contact forces and excitation forces acting on the roadbed from the measured dynamic response of the rails is developed. Frequency-domain excitation forces are applied to a periodic finite element–infinite element model to predict ground-borne vibration. In this model, the tunnel structure and soils in the near field are modelled as finite elements, whereas infinite elements are used to simulate wave propagation in the far-field soils. An experiment to measure the vibrations on the rail and ground surface during train passages in the Beijing metro was conducted to validate the proposed formulation. It is shown that high computational efficiency and accuracy in this formulation can be expected in the prediction of ground-borne vibration in a curved tunnel–soil system.

Prediction of ground-borne vibrations due to elevated railway traffic

This study investigates the impact of ground-borne vibrations on people in dwellings nearby elevated railway traffic. Assessments are conducted over predicted vibrations with respect to national regulations. Main excitation mechanism is taken as the dynamic loading due to rail and wheel irregularities. Frequency response functions at the rail head are obtained from harmonic analyses by finite element modeling of the elevated structure. In the prediction procedure, dynamic model of the vehicle is coupled with these frequency response functions. Dynamic loading on the railhead is determined and dynamic reaction forces on the legs of the elevated structure are calculated in frequency domain. Ground vibrations are then estimated by implementing a Fourier transform based theoretical model for the layered ground. Assessment in the frequency range from 1 Hz to 100 Hz in one-third octave bands are conducted for groundborne vibrations calculated at the foundation level of dwellings.

Prediction of ground-borne vibrations on historical structures due to tram traffic in Antalya, Turkey

This study investigates the ground-borne vibrations on historically landmarked structures in the city of Antalya due to tram traffic. Assessments are conducted over predicted vibrations with respect to international standards. The study serves as a guidance for the tenders in the upcoming tender process for projects of upgrading existing tram lines as well as construction of new lines. In the prediction procedure, an existing Fourier transform based theoretical model for the track and layered ground is implemented coupling vehicle dynamics. Groundborne vibrations calculated at the base level of structures are considered. Vibration assessment criteria taken from ISO 2631 standard are employed in the evaluations of predicted vibrations at the respective locations in three mutually perpendicular directions.

Prediction of groundborne vibration from vibrating rollers

The increasing size and power of modern construction plant and its potential to cause damage or disturbance, coupled with a growing requirement for assessment of environmental impacts of construction works, have led to a need for reliable ground vibration prediction. While there is a growing need to minimise the adverse effects of construction works, over-conservative restrictions on vibration may lead to significant and unnecessary cost increases. A programme of research has been undertaken to provide data and advice by which objections to schemes may be judged and a means of assessing the environmental impact of vibration from construction works. This paper focuses on one aspect of this research: ground vibration caused by vibrating rollers. A literature review revealed little published work relating to vibration from vibratory compaction. Extensive data were therefore acquired from construction sites including a range of roller types, topographies, fill types and soil types. In addition, a controlled trial of vibration from a range of vibrating rollers operated on a specially constructed test bed was undertaken. An empirical model was developed, based on readily available information, to predict the peak particle velocity at distances of up to 100 m from the source. The predictor was derived largely from the controlled trial data and has been validated by fitting to the data from construction sites.

The prediction of groundborne vibration from percussive piling

Environmental assessments of proposed infrastructure projects include an appraisal of the vibration that would be generated by potential construction methods. This paper considers one part of that process: prediction of groundborne vibration from percussive piling. Various methods for predicting the magnitude of the groundborne vibration generated by percussive piling have been described in the literature. In general, the accuracy of the predictors is limited. The paper investigates the reasons for this, through the development of theoretical models and analysis of field data from an extensive programme of on-site vibration monitoring. It is found that some widespread assumptions about the relationship between the energy rating of a percussive piling hammer and the vibrational energy developed in the ground are invalid. Ground conditions are shown to have a dominant influence on the magnitude of the groundborne vibration generated by percussive piling, and piling vibration predictors which take no account of soil type yield considerably less accurate estimates than site-specific predictions.Key words: piling, vibration, monitoring, prediction, environmental assessment.
