Proteins of different cancers were separated by the preparative-electroplioretic method and were obtained in pure form by means of dialysation and vacuum-drying. The proteins were brought together with Paramaecium caudatum. Under the influence of the quickly moving proteins (pre-albumin fraction and albumin), deformations appeared after 3–5 days in all cases (50). The animals have a plump back portion with 2 nuclei and 2 micro-nuclei. They swim clumsily and more slowly than previously. We must assume that these proteins contain an agent that stimulates thc protozoan to a precipitate division of its nucleus just as is tlie case with cancer cells. The globulin fractions moving most slowly proved in all experiments to exercise an obstructive inlluencc on the test animals, which had all died after 7 days. The other globulins (α and β) proved indifferent. The same behaviour was shown by the serum proteins of patients suffering from carcinoma, which likewise developed deformations caused by albumin. Deformations were also caused by the carcinogenous substances, benzpyrene and dibenzanthracene, in a dilution of 1 : 2000. Serum protein and organic protein of non-caucerous patients proved to have no influence in the test animals.
