Identifying characterizations of BPM methodology in hotel industry: evidence from listed hotel companies in Egypt

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to identify the characterizations of business process management (BPM) methodology in hotel industry through an aggregate processing of the core cyclesteps (CCCs) of the highly-cited BPM life-cycle models in the literature aiming to highlight the major issues of the current methodological approach of BPM in hotels when to put the notion of service process into practice.Design/methodology/approachThe paper identifies and examines the most popular BPM life-cycles models in the literature and locates 15 life-cycles that are highly cited. The paper then focuses on applying the theory on nine listed hotel companies in Egypt using a questionnaire in the form of a semi-structured interview technique.FindingsThe CCSs of BPM life-cycle model applied in hotels revealed a gap between BPM theory and practice in this sector. Utilizing this model of BPM life-cycle, the paper focuses on describing several of the main problems or pitfalls found in the methodological approach of BPM in hotels, which brings the essence of the whole operation management problems.Practical implicationsIn light of these findings, the paper discusses the practical implications and focuses on recommendations on how to properly improve the methodological approach of BPM in hotels in order to get better business results.Originality/valueThe paper bridges the gap between BPM theory and practice and suggests recommendations that will assist hotel companies to eliminate the problems of poor process management (PM). There are also future research recommendations to enhance the knowledge of BPM theory in the service sector.

A measurement instrument for the “ten principles of good BPM”

PurposeThe ten principles of good business process management (BPM) support organizations in planning and scoping the organizations' BPM approach. Derived from literature and expert panels, the principles received much attention both in research and practice. This article develops a measurement instrument to operationalize the principles and to support organizations in measuring the degree to which they incorporate the principles in their BPM approach, that way advancing their BPM capabilities.Design/methodology/approachThe authors applied the scale-development methodology, because this methodology is an established approach consisting of various techniques to develop measurement instruments. First, the authors used established techniques to develop such an instrument. Then, the authors assessed the validity and reliability of the developed instrument through a field survey with 345 participants.FindingsThe authors developed a valid and reliable measurement instrument for the ten principles of good BPM. The field survey's results reveal that the measurement instrument meets all required methodological standards. The instrument, thus, can be applied to help process owners and managers to evaluate their BPM approach and plan future actions based on potential shortcomings. Future research can both use and further develop the instrument, which serves as a conceptualization of the principles.Originality/valueThis study is the first to provide a measurement instrument for assessing an organizations' BPM practice against the ten principles of good BPM, which have become established as a much-considered and widely-used source of reference both in academia and practice. The authors also discuss how the instrument compares to and distinguishes from existing approaches to qualify BPM approaches, thus communicating the significance of the instrument.

Performance Analysis Method for Robotic Process Automation

Recent studies show that decision making in Business Process Management (BPM) and incorporating sustainability in business is vital for service innovation within a company. Likewise, it is also possible to save time and money in an automated, intelligent and sustainable way. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is one solution that can help businesses improve their BPM and sustainability practices through digital transformation. However, deciding which processes to automate with RPA technology can be complex. Consequently, this paper presents a model for selecting indicators to determine the profitability of shifting to RPA in selected business processes. The method used in this work is the Performance Analysis Method, which allows for predicting which processes could be replaced by RPA to save time and money in a service workflow. The Performance Analysis Method consists of collecting data on the speed and efficiency of a business process and then using that data to develop discrete event simulations to estimate the cost of automating parts of that process. A case study using this model is presented, using business process data from an international utility company as input to the discrete event simulation. The model used in this study predicts that this Electric Utility Company (EUC) will save a substantial amount of money if it implements RPA in its call center.

In the context of modern challenges and needs of the global business environment, effective management of business processes and ensuring economic security are extremely important for the success of IT enterprises. This article examines the key aspects of economic security and business process management in the context of information technology, enabling analysis, evaluation, and optimization of enterprise activities in this sector. Research Objective. Studying key aspects of economic security and business process management in the context of their optimization in the IT sector, as well as researching methods of business process management and providing practical recommendations that can be useful for IT enterprises to improve their efficiency and competitiveness. Method (methodology). The research methodology involves literature analysis, empirical studies, and the use of analytical, synthesis, modeling, and forecasting methods to gain a deeper understanding of economic security and business process management in the IT sector. General scientific techniques have been utilized, including the analysis of scientific literature addressing issues of economic security and business process management. Empirical studies include the analysis of practical situations in the IT sector, allowing for the examination of specific cases of success or challenges in the field of economic security and business process management. This combination of methods will enable a comprehensive analysis and provide recommendations for improving practices in the IT sector. The results. The research methodology encompasses literature analysis, empirical studies, and the utilization of analysis, synthesis, modeling, and forecasting methods to gain a deeper understanding of economic security and business process management in the IT sector. Empirical research involves analyzing practical situations in the IT sector, allowing for the examination of specific cases of success or challenges in the realm of economic security and business process management. This combination of methodologies enables a comprehensive analysis and provides recommendations for improving business process management practices within the context of economic security in the IT sector Conclusions. The issues of achieving economic security status by IT businesses have been studied and summarized, taking into account their specificities. Methods for assessing the effectiveness of business process management through the use of indicator systems adapted to the IT industry have been generalized. Suggestions have been made for developing performance indicators for IT enterprise business processes to enhance management practices and ensure stability and competitiveness of IT companies within the context of economic security.

The use of advanced technologies to complete business processes with minimal human intervention is known as "business process automation". The purpose of automation is to replace manual human labor with machine labor and optimize the entire production process. With the help of modern technologies of machine interaction, automated parameter control systems are implemented at factories, the data of which is transferred to the server and processed. Taking into account the analysis of this data, the machine itself decides on any action. Automation speeds up work by redirecting information to the right person at the right time with user-defined rules and actions, helping managers move to a new, higher level of management. It gives an opportunity to focus on the company's strategic goals. Automation is currently a very relevant and important direction in the field of theory and practice of business process management. Its main goal is to increase the socio-economic efficiency of the enterprise through the purposeful implementation of software and hardware systems that increase the speed and accuracy of the implementation of business processes, while minimizing erroneous actions and decisions arising under the influence of the so-called "human factor". The automation system helps to turn monotonous manual work into automatic, making such work more technological and advanced. Enterprises work in a highly competitive environment, therefore, they need constant development, use of best practices and new technologies. With the increase in the number of management tasks in large systems, the volume of processed information increases significantly and the complexity of management algorithms increases. As a result, there is a mismatch between the complexity of the managed object and the ability of any governing body to receive and process information. Therefore, the automation of business processes is a necessary condition for the company's survival in the modern world. Automation of business processes is one of the fastest growing technologies today. Businesses need to do less with more and ensure their processes are as efficient and effective as possible. To do this, they turn to business process automation software to scale processes, solve unique workflow challenges, and maximize productivity.

Modelling factors of influence on business process management in the organizations of the clothing industry

Business process management (BPM) in organizations of the clothing industry can be considered as a practice of importance for establishing a stable and progressive business. In contemporary business, which considers the application of best business practices within production-business systems, effective process management becomes important and emerges as a practice that contributes to the overall improvement of the organization’s operations. BPM focuses on improving both internal and inter-organizational operations that take place between organizations within the supply chain of clothing industry. The effective BPM in the organizations of the clothing industry may depend on the establishment of the various elements. The assumption is that influential elements are specifics of the garment industry such as the primary BPM activities, the different dimensions of BPM which are consistent with a comprehensive view of this approach, as well as the mere involvement of human resources in the business processes of the organizations. The defined influential elements are treated as variables of the structural model, created by the implementation of the IBM SPSS AMOS structural modelling program, exploring a number of hypothesized impacts. The results of this research help to understanding the impact of these elements on the strengthening BPM practice in the clothing industry organizations.

Influence of sectoral trends in business process management in e-commerce

The article considers the specifics of e-commerce sphere development and determines the main directions of industry trends influence on the business process management. The need to develop on the basis of analytical data of scientific and practical tools and recommendations that define and characterize the relationship between industry trends and the trajectory of e-commerce enterprises development is actualized. The context and conditions of modern e-commerce enterprises activity are described, including the issues of development of this sphere under the influence of restrictive measures related to the coronavirus pandemic COVID-19. The need for the effective response of the e-commerce enterprise to certain tendencies is actualized, the necessity of adaptation of management of this enterprise to change of managing conditions, technological and institutional transformations is noted. Problems have been identified and scientific and practical solutions have been formed, focused on improving of e-commerce enterprises efficiency under the influence of environmental factors. The most influential factors that characterize the practice of economic entities functioning in the field of e-commerce at the current stage at the global level are determined. The leading industry trends and conditions of activity in the field of e-commerce are studied and the impact of these trends on the enterprises management in the field of e-commerce is characterized. The strategic guidelines are defined and substantiated, the basic preconditions are outlined and scientific and practical recommendations are given to increase the efficiency of e-commerce enterprises management in modern business conditions in the context of the impact of intra-industry trends. The preconditions for the transformation of business process management practices in e-commerce under the influence of these trends are analyzed

Roadmap for operational sustainability: an approach based on Integrated Management Systems and Business Process Management

Purpose - This paper proposes a roadmap for the sustainability of operations based on the principles and practices taken from Integrated Management Systems (IMS) and Business Process Management (BPM).Theoretical framework - Companies must consider results based on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of the Triple Bottom Line, and as such, some researchers point to the contribution made by IMS for sustainability. Another important aspect of changing to more sustainable business models is organizational structure. BPM focuses on implementing horizontal management in the organization through business processes.Design/methodology/approach – Within this context, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was carried out to identify IMS and BPM principles, practices and techniques, then a roadmap was designed and field research was carried out by specialists.Findings - Field research findings indicate that the roadmap represents a framework which can support organizations to achieve their sustainability goals.Research limitations/implications - One of the limitations in the study was the reduced number of specialists who analyzed the roadmap. Therefore, it is suggested, as a further study, that this roadmap is validated by other experts, including people from other countries. Another limitation is that the study must progress further on the issues of implementation posed by the proposed roadmap. As such, a further study should be carried out to address this point.Originality/value - This study uses concepts that have already been consolidated in the literature (IMS and BPM) as support for companies that seek to become more sustainable.Key words - Integrated Management System; Business Process Management; Roadmap; Sustainability; IMS; BPM.

CONTEMPORARY MANAGEMENT OF BUSINESS PROCESSES WITHIN THE SUPPLY CHAIN OF FASHION INDUSTRY

Business processes are present in all types of organizations, regardless of the size or industry within which the organization operates. Successful business process management (BPM) is an indicator of the level of process maturity of the organization. Within the supply chain, it is possible to observe the presence of business processes of a collaborative nature, as BPM relies on the principles of partnership, development, and exchange of information through links that exist within this chain between all actors [1]. Within this paper, BPM in the relations with suppliers and consumers within the supply chain of organizations operating in the fashion industry is considered. Lambert [2] lists eight macro processes that take place in the supply chain, between suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and end consumers, as follows: customer relationship management, supplier relationship management, demand management, order execution, fl ow management production, product development and commercialization and return management. Within this paper, a research is presented which analyzes the segments of managing collaborative business processes within the supply chain of the fashion industry, based on the responses of 508 managers and employees in the fashion industry in the Republic of Serbia. The needs for the development of certain segments in accordance with the needs of modern business process management have been explored.Scientifi c novelty. The research part of this paper relies on the application of Friedman's test which enables the analysis of the current state of BPM in relations with suppliers and consumers within the supply chain of the fashion industry, expressed through workers' responses with a ranking of their preferences. This paper contributes to the creation of a knowledge base within the research in the fi eld of the impact of BPM on improvements in the supply chain, on the basis of which it is possible to conduct further research and upgrade knowledge.Practical value. The fi ndings derived from the results of research of this type contribute to the development of the business from various aspects. The benefi ts can be refl ected not only through the strengthening of the competitive position but also through the sustainability of business on the basis of adequate application of BPM practices in all business segments. Accordingly, in addition to the scientifi c novelty, which is refl ected in the results of the rese arch work, there is a practical novelty, which is refl ected in the guidelines for the development of modern BPM within the supply chain of the fashion industry.

PRIORITIZATION OF KEY ACTIVITIES ON ESTABLISHMENT OF BPM PRACTICE IN APPAREL ORGANIZATIONS

The research is approached with the assumption that business process management (BPM), as well as other management practices, is subject to a specific adoption manner by taking certain steps and activities as a priority in accordance with the characteristics of the industry. The apparel industry is considered to be particularly specific because it has labor-intensive and creative character, it is necessary to acquire certain professional knowledge and skills, the female labor force is dominant, and that micro, small and medium-sized enterprises are present in the largest number. Based on the experts' evaluation of specifics importance, activities that influence the adoption of BPM practice are ranked. Weighting coefficients of specifics were obtained based on the application of a pairwise comparison matrix, while prioritization of activities was performed using the WASPAS method, whereby the priority of defining process roles and responsibilities is determined. The Pareto diagram gives a situational presentation of results.

The adaptation of business process management maturity models to the context of the knowledge economy

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the current business process management (BPM) maturity models meet the requirements of evaluating organizations in the knowledge economy (KE) which manage processes in a dynamic way.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, a content analysis of the OMG (2008) Business Process Maturity Model and ten research papers on the practical application of business process management maturity models was conducted. The nature of the study is descriptive and based solely on information from secondary data sources.FindingsThe research results reveal that the current BPM maturity models do not correspond with the knowledge-based organizations and take into account knowledge-intensive (usually dynamic) processes in a very limited way. That is why the adaptation of the current BPM maturity models to the KE is needed.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the BPM theory and practice in two ways. First, it provides an enhanced insight into the requirements of the KE toward BPM and BPM maturity models by distinguishing between static and dynamic processes. Second, it formulates the recommendations on possible ways of adapting the current BPM maturity models to the requirements of the KE.

Business process management maturity and performance

PurposeThe importance of contextual factors is increasingly recognized in the field of business process management (BPM). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relation between BPM maturity and process performance and the uncharted differences of two contextual factors (size and sector) in this relation.Design/methodology/approachAn empirical investigation is presented based on a sample of 165 organizations. Using partial least square-multi group analysis (PLS-MGA) differences between size and sector are investigated.FindingsOverall, information technology, resources and knowledge and process measurement are the most pivotal BPM maturity dimensions that contribute to a better organizational process performance. The results showed no differences between private and public organizations in the relation between BPM maturity dimensions and process performance. In contrast, product organizations benefit more than service organizations from continuous improvement of their processes. Moreover, utilizing IT technology is more beneficial for small organizations rather than large organizations.Originality/valueThere is a clear lack of empirical studies investigating the role of context. This research extends the limited body of literature that investigated contextual factors in the field of BPM. It is the first study to add size and sector in the posited multi-dimensional model of BPM maturity dimensions and process performance. The results provide guidance for scholars and practitioners that work on BPM practices in different contexts.

ASSESSMENT OF BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT FOR MSMEs IN EAST JAVA

The role of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) for the economy of many countries, especially Indonesia are very important. The garment industry is one of the developing industries in Indonesia. Enterprises need to understanding, documenting, modelling, analyzing, simulating, implementing to increasing the value and achieving business operational efficiency and survive business competition. Therefore, it is necessary to know assess the maturity level of business process management in MSMEs. The purpose of this study is to assess the maturity level of business process management from MSMEs. First, the relevant literature is reviewed to gain insight into the practice of business process management in general, the context of MSME in Indonesia and previous studies related to business process management in the context of MSMEs. This research was conducted in East Java and data collection was done by distributing questionnaires to MSME owners. This study shows that a lack of knowledge resources about BPM is the main factor causes the MSMEs have low business process maturity level.

Faktori usvojenosti prakse upravljanja poslovnim procesima u radno-intenzivnim delatnostima

The adoption of business process management practices is subject to assessment based on various influencing factors. Within the work, the factors that appear in the literature were extracted in order to form a list of comprehensive factors that help in assessing the pace and manner of BPM practice adoption in labor-intensive activities. Using the fuzzy Delphi method, a list of factors was drawn up based on expert responses, and considering the labor-intensive character as a specificity within this method, a list was extracted and ranked. By defuzzification of triangular fuzzy numbers, a solution is obtained, based on which the top ranked factor is the human resource management.

Upravljanje kreativnim i radno-intenzivnim poslovnim procesima odevne industrije

Creative and labor-intensive character are the specificities of the garment industry that arise from the activities that take place within the process, primarily related to apparel manufacturing. The consideration of the problems of managing creative and labor-intensive processes in the framework of this paper is approached considering that the clothing industry is characterized by a number of different specificities. The factors that influence the adoption of business process management practices in accordance with these specifics have different effects on the optimal management of these business processes. Therefore, this paper describes the links between the factors influencing the adoption of business process management practices and the creative and labor-intensive processes of the clothing industry and establishes a theoretical basis for further study of this issue.

A semantic approach for generating government processes

In the last years, governments embraced business process management practices to improve their interactions and services with various stakeholders such as citizens, businesses and other government agencies. Nevertheless, current government process management solutions are still very limited at the semantic level, leading to challenges in dealing with legal, social, organisational, political and economic constraints, collectively referred to as 'context'. In this paper, we introduce a semantic government process management (SGPM) approach for the design and deployment of legally compliant government processes. The developed solution is mainly articulated around an ontological framework, with a high level of abstraction, allowing the explicit representation of legal context associated with government processes. It is connected to a defined legal meta-model that acts as legal context extraction guidelines and knowledge source. Moreover, this framework is substantiated by a legal features model allowing the semantic representation of structural relationships and dependencies between processes, sub-processes, as well as activities. The ontological framework is implemented as software assets, using OWL-DL, that constitute the kernel from which BPEL executable government processes are automatically generated.

Uma análise sobre a influência entre as práticas de gestão de processos de negócio nas organizações do polo têxtil do agreste de Pernambuco

O gerenciamento de processos de negócios (BPM) é um instrumento que auxilia no monitoramento do desempenho das organizações, promovendo uma visão sistêmica do ambiente interno e externo a organização, com relação a todos os participantes e processos, bem como suas inter-relações. O objetivo desse trabalho é avaliar o relacionamento e influência entre os elementos centrais às práticas de BPM e o desempenho organizacional, considerando informações de empresas situadas no Arranjo Produtivo Local (APL) Têxtil do Agreste de Pernambuco, haja vista sua relevância dentro da economia internacional, nacional e regional. As hipóteses propostas quanto ao relacionamento entre os processos foram testadas utilizando o método dos mínimos quadrados parciais, com o auxílio do software SmartPLS 3.0. Como resultados observados, são destacadas a proposição e confirmação de relacionamentos, dentre outros, ao alinhamento estratégico e governança, bem como a governança e o uso de tecnologia da informação, e o uso de tecnologia da informação e cultura organizacional.

Enterprise Business Process Management in the Public Sector: The Case of the Department of Human Services (DHS) Australia

Business process management (BPM) in the public sector is proliferating globally, but has its contextual challenges. Ad hoc process improvement initiatives across governmental departments are not uncommon. However, as for all organisations, BPM efforts that are coordinated across the organisation will reap better outcomes than those conducted in isolation. BPM education plays a vital role in supporting such organisation-wide BPM efforts. This teaching case is focused on the sustainable development and progression of enterprise business process management (E-BPM) capabilities at the Federal Department of Human Services: a large Australian federal government agency. The detailed case narrative vividly describes the case organisation, their prior and present BPM practices and how they have attempted BPM at an enterprise level, capturing pros and cons of the journey. A series of student activities pertaining to E-BPM practices is provided with model answers (covering key aspects of BPM governance, strategic alignment, culture, people, IT, methods, etc.). This case provides invaluable insights into E-BPM efforts in general and BPM within the public sector. It can be useful to BPM educators as a rich training resource and to BPM practitioners seeking guidance for their E-BPM efforts.
