The role of alcohol consumption in the lives of older Australian women: qualitative insights and an agenda for further research, policy and practice

BackgroundAlcohol consumption presents a threat to the health and wellbeing of women. The alcohol industry often pushes back at global efforts to prioritise the prevention of alcohol harms to women. Qualitative researchers have investigated how younger and midlife women conceptualise their alcohol consumption, but there is very limited research relating to older women (those 60 years and over).MethodsUsing data collected from an online qualitative survey, this paper explored the factors that influence how older Australian women drinkers (n = 144. 60–88 years) conceptualised the role of alcohol in their lives. The study used a ‘Big Q’ reflexive approach to thematic analysis, drawing upon sociological theories of risk and symbolic interactionism to construct four themes from the data.ResultsFirst, alcohol consumption was viewed by participants as an accepted and normalised social activity, that was part of Australian culture. Second, alcohol played a role for some participants as a way to cope with life changes (such as retirement), as well as managing stressful or challenging life circumstances (such as loneliness). Third, alcohol was part of the routines and rituals of everyday life for some women. For example, women discussed the consumption of wine with their evening meal as an important part of the structure of their day. Fourth, participants had clear personal expectancies about what it meant to be a ‘responsible drinker’. They had clear narratives about personal control and moral obligation, which in some cases created a reduced perception of their own risk of alcohol-caused harm.ConclusionsThis research provides a starting point for future public health research examining the factors that may shape older women’s alcohol consumption beliefs and practices. Public health activities should consider the unique needs and potential vulnerabilities of older women drinkers, and how these may be potentially exploited by the alcohol industry.

The World Health Organization’s “Healthy Cities” initiative seeks to enhance community well-being by improving urban environments and promoting healthy lifestyles such as smoking cessation, moderate alcohol consumption, and increased physical activity. These efforts aim to reduce chronic diseases and manage obesity. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives often lacks quantitative evaluation, especially regarding the impact on the health lifestyle practices of adults in the community. This study evaluates the impact of the Healthy City Ordinance on local adult health behaviors in 214 Korean municipalities by analyzing data on smoking cessation, alcohol consumption, and walking practice from 2008 to 2020, using ecological analysis. This study assesses the impact of Korea’s Healthy Cities Basic Ordinance on adult healthy lifestyle practices using ecological analyses from 2008 to 2022, finding a significant reduction in smoking and high-risk drinking rates, but no significant change in walking rates, suggesting that while the ordinance positively influences some health behaviors, its effects are not uniformly distributed across all health behavior areas. This study highlights the importance of healthy city ordinances in public health by providing evidence that supports the development of sustainable health promotion strategies, emphasizing the role of ordinances in policy-making, and offering insights that aid in the effective design and implementation of health policies, potentially guiding future research and strategic approaches in the field.

Adoption of Healthy Lifestyle Practices: A Preliminary Investigation from South Karnataka, India

Abstract Background: The fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle include a balanced diet, regular exercise, enough sleep and not indulging oneself in harmful practices of smoking, tobacco and alcohol consumption. Healthy lifestyle incorporated into one’s life will reduce the chance of having hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, obesity, metabolic syndrome, etc. Aims and Objectives: The present study was undertaken to assess preliminary data regarding the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices among adults. Materials and Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted for a period of 3 months from August to October 2023 among 335 adults aged > 19 years. Data was collected using a semi-structured pretested questionnaire by the researchers. Data was entered in Microsoft Excel and analysed using SPSS Version 26.0. Descriptive statistics was used to describe age, gender, occupation, etc. Inferential statistics was used to find the association between categorical variables. Results: Out of 335 study participants, 42.1% were males and 57.9% were females. The majority of the population were not aware that balanced diet (94.9%), and adequate physical activity (90.4 %) as components of healthy lifestyle. The majority of the study participants following a balanced diet (38.5%) were graduates and the majority having adequate physical activity and adequate sleep were illiterates. Conclusion: The present study concludes that the majority had poor awareness about healthy lifestyle practices and its adoption. It is warranted that there is a need for the wide dissemination of the importance of following healthy lifestyle practices and its role in the prevention of diseases.

Awareness and Practice Regarding Alcohol Consumption among Females in Rural Areas of Nepal

Consuming alcohol is defined as ingesting alcoholic beverages that include ethyl alcohol, such as wine, beer, whiskey, rum, and handmade alcoholic beverages called "Raksi." Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to serious health issues. Thus, this study aimed to assess the awareness regarding alcohol consumption among females in rural areas of Nepal. A cross-sectional and analytical study was designed to assess the level of awareness and practice regarding alcohol consumption. Total 423 females of the 20-50 years age groups, engaged in “Raksi '' preparation sites were selected. The data collection period was from 2021 July to 2022. A face-to-face interview was done with each individual. All questions related to awareness and practice regarding questionnaires were analyzed accordingly in univariate analysis and bi-variate analysis to find out the association between the variables. The result showed that the mean age of the females was 36.08 with a standard deviation of 7.951. and 51.7% were below the mean age of 36. Among 423 females 22.3 % knew AUD, 56.7% were aware of health consequences, and only 13.3% were aware of treatment protocol of health consequences. Females having inappropriate practices of alcohol consumption were 54.2%. There is an association between awareness regarding consumption and religion, marital status, educational status, and occupation with p=0.043, 0.036, 0.046, and 0.033 respectively. Similarly, the inappropriate practice of alcohol consumption has a significant relation with religion, educational status, and occupation with p values of 0.049,0.034, and 0.003 respectively. Even though there is a higher percentage of females were literate, there is a lack of awareness regarding alcohol consumption and inappropriate drinking habits. Further comparative study can be done in this aspect. Simultaneously, awareness and education-related programs can be implemented to address the problem.

Morbidity Profile and Substance use among the Elderly Tribal and Non Tribal Population of the Imphal East District of Manipur, India

This study employs correlation and regression analysis to compile a comprehensive profile of morbidity and psychoactive substance use among the elderly tribal and non-tribal populations in the Imphal East district of Manipur. By identifying prevalent health issues such as hypertension, osteoporosis and diabetes mellitus, alongside shared practices of alcohol consumption and chewing tobacco, the research sheds light on critical health concerns and behavioral patterns affecting this demographic. The findings provide valuable insights for targeted interventions and policy formulation to address the pressing health challenges faced by the elderly in this region. Through a thorough assessment of morbidity and substance use, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the health dynamics within the elderly population, paving the way for informed decision-making and improved healthcare strategies tailored to the needs of this vulnerable demographic group.

Analysis of the dimensional structure of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in undergraduate students at a public university in Brazil

BackgroundThe prevalence of mental health-related problems has increased in recent years, especially among young adults, such as university students. Several measurement instruments have been developed to identify individuals at risk for depression, such as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). However, different dimensional structures of the PHQ-9 can make it difficult to interpret and compare research results. To analyze the dimensional structure and convergent validity of the PHQ-9 in university students. MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study developed with 3163 students enrolled in different courses at a university in southern Brazil. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed to identify the most parsimonious and best-fitting model. Convergent validity was verified through the significant relationship (p < 0.05) between theoretically related constructs (sleep quality, alcohol consumption, and physical activity practice). ResultsThe EFA resulted in two models (unidimensional and two-dimensional), with better indices for the two-dimensional model. In the CFA, both the unidimensional and the two-dimensional models presented satisfactory fit indices that were higher for the unidimensional model. LimitationsThe analysis of convergent validity is limited by the absence of a gold standard for comparison. ConclusionsThis study provided support for the unidimensional structure of the PHQ-9, with adequate convergent validity, among university students.

A prevention program for binge drinking among students based on mindfulness and implementation intention (ALCOMEDIIT): a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundThe emergence of new problematic alcohol consumption practices among young people requires new dynamics in prevention strategies. In this context, the ADUC project (Alcohol and Drugs at the University of Caen) aims to develop a better understanding of alcohol consumption, and in particular the practice of binge drinking (BD) in students, in order to develop relevant and adapted prevention tools. The ALCOMEDIIT study (Rin Normandie and IRESP funding; Agreement 20II31-00 - ADUC part 3) is a randomized controlled trial that focuses on the specific determinant of impulsivity. The main objective of this experiment is to assess a program for the prevention of BD practices based on motivational interviewing (MI) associated with implementation intention (II) and mindfulness meditation (MBM) in a student environment.MethodsThis study will include 170 healthy subjects who will be students at the university, alcohol users, with a BD score > 1 in the month preceding the inclusion but not presenting any specific disorder. The trial will be proposed by e-mail and students who meet the inclusion criteria will join either a control group which will benefit from a MI or an experimental group which will additionally benefit from an initiation to MBM with II (initial visit T0). In order to measure the effectiveness of the prevention program in terms of BD decrease, a follow-up at 1 month (T1) as well as a follow-up at 6 months (T6; exploratory) will be proposed to all participants. The Magnitude and associated factors of Helicobacter Pylori Infection among Dyspeptic Patients at the Arba Minch General Hospital in Southern Ethiopia

Background: Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a major public health problem, with a higher prevalence reported in developing countries, including Ethiopia. Persistent H. pylori infection could result in chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcers, and subsequently gastric carcinoma. However, the burden of the infection varies within and between countries. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was carried out on 422 adult dyspeptic patients attended at Arba Minch General Hospital from March 1st to June 30th, 2022. Pretested structured questionnaires were used to collect socio-demographic characteristics, clinical information, and other related factors for H. pylori infection. Stool samples were analyzed using the H. pylori fecal antigen rapid test kit. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 25. The p-value &lt; 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The overall magnitude of H. pylori was found to be 32.2% (136/422), with a 95% CI = (27.7-36.5). The highest proportion of H. pylori occurred in male study participants (55.1%) and in participants aged 31-40 years (42.6%). H. pylori stool antigen positivity was significantly associated with alcohol consumption [AOR = 1.87, 95% CI: (1.06-3.29)], smoking cigarettes [AOR = 2.75, 95% CI: (1.43-5.27)], and hand washing practice after the toilet [AOR = 3.02, 95% CI: (1.41-6.48)]. Conclusion: Overall, a considerable magnitude of H. pylori was identified in the setting. Alcohol consumption, smoking cigarettes, and hand washing practice after using the toilet were found to be statistically significantly associated with H. pylori infection. Health education is therefore essential, particularly regarding societal lifestyle changes and knowledge of the potential sources of infection and H. pylori transmission.

Prática do uso de álcool em acadêmicos de uma instituição de ensino superior

Introduction: Alcohol is seen as a dangerous psychoactive substance that affects human behavior, acts on the nervous system and is very popular among young people and its use has grown significantly, affecting the world population. Objective: The aim of this study was to present a survey on possible alcohol consumption practices among Physiotherapy students at the Centro Universitário de Caratinga - UNEC Campus in Nanuque-MG. Methodology: The methodology adopted is a descriptive-exploratory study with a quantitative approach. A questionnaire was drawn up and administered to 66 academics, but 50 were present and responded appropriately. Results: The sample was made up of 90% females and 10% males. With regard to alcohol consumption, 64% chose beer as their drink and the other 36% chose drinks such as vodka, cachaça and wine. Regarding the places they went to drink, 29% preferred to drink at home, 11% in bars, pubs or nightclubs, 21% at friends' houses, 36% at two or more places including their own home and 3% at friends' houses and outside the home. As for the frequency of consumption, 39% said that they drink once a month or less, 36% said that they drink two to four times a month, and 25% said that they drink two to three times a week. Conclusion: Abusive alcohol consumption has a negative impact on the health of young university students, making them vulnerable as many go through changes in their personal and academic lives. It is therefore important to raise awareness of the risks of excessive alcohol consumption in order to ensure a healthier and more satisfactory adaptation to university and during their training.

The role of positionality in research ‘gone wrong’: critical reflections on research involving young people

ABSTRACT In this Viewpoint, we consider the importance of positionality in research ‘gone wrong’. We focus on the intersections of age, gender and appearance. Reflecting on two doctoral research projects involving young people (one about alcohol consumption practices and another about community radio), researched by us – young female researchers, we reveal unanticipated ethical dilemmas from the field. These include: being fancied by a male participant; a young male participant asking if he could stay at the researcher’s home; and being asked to buy alcohol for young participants. Now established academics, we feel able to reflect critically on such complex and unanticipated research situations. We hope being candid about these ethical quandaries will inspire the next generation of children’s geographers to consider the importance of reflexivity around positionality as they embrace the inherent messiness of research ethics.

Development and validation of the help-seeking intention scale in university students with hazardous and harmful consumption of alcohol.

The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) has been proposed as suitable to study help-seeking intentions. This paper aims to develop the IH-RHAC scale (Help-seeking intention in young adults with hazardous and harmful alcohol consumption) with the TPB. The objectives of the study were: (a) to analyze the structure, reliability, and validity of the instrument, (b) to identify whether attitude, subjective norm, self-efficacy, and past help-seeking would predict help-seeking intention, and (c) to assess concurrent validity. From a total of 2,011 students who responded to the surveys, the sample was made up of 263 university students aged 18 to 29 with hazardous and harmful alcohol consumption practices, who responded to an online questionnaire including the AUDIT, IH-RHAC, and a scale of barriers and resources for alcohol consumption. Partial least squares structural equations (PLS-SEM) were used to test the hypotheses about reliability, validity of the scales, and prediction of the constructs: attitude, subjective norms, self-efficacy, and help-seeking in the past about intention. Pearson's correlations were used to obtain evidence of concurrent validity. The results displayed favorable psychometric characteristics. The internal measurement model showed that attitude, self-efficacy, and prior help-seeking predicted a 27% help-seeking variance. Subjective norm did not predict intention. It has been concluded that this is an instrument with psychometric support that can contribute to designing and/or evaluating interventions that promote the students' search for help.

Predictive Risk Factor Analysis of Oral Submucous Fibrosis among Gond Tribes of Central India: A Cross-Sectional Study

ABSTRACT Introduction: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a potentially malignant disorder characterized by fibrotic changes in the oral mucosa. It is a significant public health concern, particularly among certain ethnic populations. The Gond tribes of Central India represent one such population, and the prevalence and risk factors associated with OSMF among them remain largely unexplored. This study aims to conduct a predictive risk factor analysis to identify the factors associated with OSMF among the Gond tribes and provide insights into the etiology and pathogenesis of the disease within this specific population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the Gond tribal population of Central India. A total of 800 participants were included in the study. Oral examinations were conducted by trained researchers to assess the presence of OSMF and other oral health conditions. Demographic and socioeconomic data were collected, including age, gender, education level, occupation, and household income. Lifestyle factors such as tobacco and betel nut chewing, alcohol consumption, and oral hygiene practices were assessed through structured questionnaires. Dietary patterns and nutritional status were evaluated, and oral health-related factors such as dental caries, periodontal health, and other oral lesions were examined. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors associated with OSMF among the Gond tribes. Results: The prevalence of OSMF among the Gond tribes was 12.5%. Demographic analysis revealed a balanced representation of genders, with a range of age groups included. Lifestyle factors such as tobacco and betel nut chewing were prevalent among the Gond tribes, with a significant proportion of participants reporting regular use of these substances. Poor oral hygiene practices and undernutrition were also identified as risk factors. Dietary patterns showed a high consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods and a relatively low intake of fruits and vegetables in addition to OSMF. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights into the prevalence and risk factors associated with OSMF among the Gond tribes of Central India. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions addressing tobacco and betel nut chewing, poor oral hygiene practices, advanced age, low education level, and undernutrition within this population. Comprehensive oral health promotion programs, including tobacco cessation initiatives, oral hygiene education, nutritional interventions, and improved access to dental care, are crucial for reducing the prevalence of OSMF and improving oral health outcomes among the Gond tribes. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to further elucidate the causal relationships and long-term impact of these risk factors on the development and progression of OSMF within the Gond tribal population.

The Impact of Taste Preference-Related Gene Polymorphisms on Alcohol Consumption Behavior: A Systematic Review.

Unhealthy alcohol consumption is recognized as a leading contributory factor to mortality and disability. In addition to other factors, taste sensation also mediates alcohol intake. The orosensation provoked by alcoholic drinks may vary across individuals and may be responsible for differences in preference for alcoholic beverages. Thus, individual genetic variability of taste preference may have an impact on alcohol consumption practices. The present review aimed to explore the associations between different taste preference polymorphisms and alcohol consumption behavior. Based on the PRISMA statement, the three databases PubMed, Web of Science and ProQuest Central were searched to identify articles and the Q-Genie tool was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Among the 17 studies included in this review, 5 and 12 were of good and moderate quality, respectively. Most of the studies analyzed TAS2R38 (taste 2 receptor member 38) rs713598, rs1726866, rs10246939 polymorphisms. Due to the inconclusive findings on these variants and the very limited number of studies on other polymorphisms, additional extensive research is recommended to replicate the existing findings, to generate new knowledge to enhance our understanding of the complexity of alcohol consumption behavior and to aid the development of personalized recommendations on unhealthy alcohol use.

Instagram, risky drinking and main health effects in Spanish adolescents in the COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative study.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between Instagram, alcohol consumption and the impact on adolescent health during the COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative study was carried out with 13 focus groups, involving 38 interviews. The fieldwork was conducted between January and December 2021 using a semi-structured script with three main categories. The research was carried out by a team specialized in adolescent risks and qualitative research. Three main categories were established: (1) The COVID-19 pandemic, Instagram and Risky Drinking, (2) Risk prevention and control strategies and (3) Effects on health. The participants (n=118) reported greater alcohol consumption among Instagram users, either because this social media platform was used to spread the practice of alcohol consumption, or because they were affected by the content posted by digital marketers, Instagrammers, and/or contacts on Instagram. More than half of the sample (67.8%) had health problems (loss of control, headaches, difficulty in breathing, trembling, anxiety attacks, vomiting, tiredness, blackouts, and absence seizures), of whom 35% required urgent attention from their parents and/or the health services. Further research is needed to prevent risky drinking related to the use of social networking sites (SNSs) and its main health effects.

Praktika potrebleniya alkogolya v rossijskoj derevne v pervoj treti XX v.

The article is devoted to the characterization of alcohol consumption practices in the Russian countryside of the 1900s - 1920s in connection with the metamorphoses of state and social development and the vicissitudes of government policy in the drinking issue. Based on the analysis of various studies and sources, the conclusion is made about the stability of sporadic consumption of alcoholic beverages in the peasant environment and the absence of significant corrections of this drinking model. It is noted that the transformation of the practice of alcohol consumption in the village occurred under the influence of the policy of “raskrestyanivaniye”, which was carried out by the Soviet government since the late 1920s, completely changing the way of life of rural inhabitants.

The Attitude of Youth to Alcohol: the Risk of Alcohol Dependence

he purpose of this article is: to reveal the psychological aspects of some diseases, as a result of alcohol consumption; to describe the peculiarities of phy­sical dependence in a way of alcoholic state; to make a scheme how alcoholism is developed; to describe the characteristic complications of binge drinking, such as white fever, alcoholic delirium; to model the degrees of intoxication; to pro-vide the pilot research and to find out the attitude of youth to alcohol.methods of the research. The following theoretical methods of the research were used to solve the tasks formulated in the article: a categorical method, structural and functional methods, the methods of the analysis, sys-tematization, modeling, generalization. The empirical method is a pilot research. The research was organized in Kyiv, Lviv, and Rivne. While researching the socio­demographic characteristics (age of respondents, their gender) were taken into account.the results of the research. A clear correlation was found: the practice of alcohol consumption was spread according to the age of respondents. Drinks such as beer, wine, vodka, cognac, whiskey, liqueur, moonshine, etc. have ever been consumed by one of three 10­year­old respondents (36%), one in two 11­ and 12­year­olds (49% and 54%), 73% – 13­year­olds, 78% – 14­year­olds, 85% – among boys and girls who were 15 years old. The share of young people at the age from 16 to 22 who drank alcohol is extremely high, ranging from 93% to 98%. Data on the age of the first case of alcohol consumption are indicative. For example, the largest share of respondents said that they had tasted beer for the first time at the age of 10 – this group is 28%, and at the age of 16 and older – 9% of respondents. The group of people who never drank alcohol is 24%. “The acquaintance” with wine and spirits occurs mainly in adolescents aged 13­16 years old and older (in particular, in the group of respondents in the age of 10­14 years old, the experience of the first drinking, at least a glass of wine have 43% of respondents). Among all respondents, 31% and 43% of ones, respectively, never drank wine or spirits. Almost half (43%) of the younger group (10­14 years old) did not answer the question about the age of the first beer. Another 75% of respondents of the same age ignored the question about the first use of spirits. Such a distribution may indicate a tendency of children and adolescents to secrecy, their bias against the confidentiality of individual answers to questionnaires.conclusions. Chronic alcoholism or alcohol addiction is a disease in which a person develops an incredible craving for alcohol, symptoms of asthenia and abstinence and other alcoholic disorders. The alcoholic is very depressed, he/she is insecure, sometimes repents, scared. The character deteriorates sharply, sleep is short and superficial, he/she sees terrible dreams. At the same time, the body’s resistance to alcohol poisoning increases. At the stage of domestic drunkenness the usual doses of alcoholism are no longer enough. Another sign of alcoholism is weakening of protective reflexes, such as vomiting, nausea, salivation. Hal-lucinations, acute psychosis and memory loss are observed with large doses of alcohol. There is an unstable motive for the person’s behavior, the patient per-forms acts that are not the main characteristics of him/her before. In the past, a sincere, merciful, a kind man becomes indifferent, immoral, angry. The alcoholic lacks focus. He/she never brings the case to the end.

Práctica de actividad física y consumo de alcohol en escolares adolescentes

Objective: To know the habits that Secondary Education students present in physical activity and alcohol consumption and the possible correlations that exist between these two habits according to the sex of the respondents. Materials and method: A descriptive cross-sectional study is presented in which 656 Secondary School students from the city of Salamanca in Spain participated. The sampling was multistage random, stratified by conglomerates, and the questionnaire from the HBSC study sponsored by the World Health Organization was used as an instrument for collecting information. Results: The results show differences according to the sex of the respondents in both habits, with boys practicing more physical activity than girls and also consuming alcohol more frequently. On the other hand, no relationship was found between the practice of physical activity and the consumption of alcohol, both showing being independent. Conclusions: Sex seems to be a relevant variable in the practice of physical activity and alcohol consumption in adolescence. Although it was hypothesized that the practice of physical activity is a protective factor against alcohol consumption, in this research there does not seem to be a correlation between both habits so that a young person can, in turn, practice physical activity on a regular basis and be habitual consumer of alcohol. Finally, given these results, global measures are proposed that favor the acquisition and maintenance of healthy behaviors at this stage of development. Knowledge and practice regarding the behavioural risks of cancer among college students in Ethiopia.

In recent years, morbidity and mortality due to cancer has been increasing in Ethiopia, putting it among the most important public health issues. Cancer and associated complications can be prevented provided that effective interventions are put in place to control risk factors. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and practice of preventable behavioural risk factors of cancer. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 200 college students in Northeast Ethiopia utilising quantitative methods of data collection. Data on socioeconomic characteristics, health belief variables, knowledge and behavioural risk factors (alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking, physical activity and dietary practice) were collected. The level of knowledge and practice was summarised using descriptive statistics. To investigate the variation in knowledge and practice across sociodemographic characteristics, we performed Pearson Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test. The majority (81.0%) of participants was male and 82.0% were in the age group of 18–24 years. More than half (61.0%) of them had poor knowledge about the behavioural risk factors of cancer. Nearly one-third (30.5%) consume alcohol, whereas 16.0%, 18.0% and 20.0%, respectively, smoke tobacco, consume street food and packed-fried snacks daily. Alcohol consumption (p = 0.02) and level of vigorous physical activity (p = 0.001) were significantly higher among males than females. Alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking and unhealthy dietary practice were remarkably high, whereas knowledge towards the behavioural risk factors was low. Therefore, health education and collaborative action between different sectors are needed to counter the emerging problem.The trial is registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (https://register.clinicaltrials.gov) NCT04269018.

Peculiarities of alcohol consumption in female urban population of different social and professional status

The aim of the work is to study the prevalence of alcohol consumption and features of alcoholic behavior among working urban women with different professional and social status. The situation with the involvement of various groups of women in alcohol consumption is analyzed on the basis of quantitative and qualitative long – term studies conducted by the team of Sector of Sociology of Deviant Behavior of ISRAS – FCTAS RAS. The article analyzes the features of alcoholic behavior – the regularity and intensity of alcohol consumption, the structure of consumed alcoholic beverages – among women leaders, specialists with higher education without subordinates, women employees and workers of various qualifications. The main motives of alcohol consumption in these groups were revealed. It is shown that, despite the recorded positive trend of recent years towards a decrease in alcoholism among women in large cities, the nature of alcohol consumption in some socio-professional groups of women has changed significantly. Business women with a high social status who drink alcohol have a heavier alcohol habits. The article considered the influence of the epidemic of coronavirus infection and the self-isolation regimeintroduced by the government of the Russian Federation in spring of 2020 on alcoholic behavior of women with different socio-professional status. It was found that according to many indicators of alcoholic behavior, business women represent a high-risk group. The factors contributing to the alcoholization of business women are identified, the role of alcohol in their life, the motives of consumption are considered. It is shown that significant factors of alcoholization of business women and women-leaders are the need to follow the business culture with its inherent practice of alcohol consumption, the desirability of a woman’s compliance with opposing social norms, as well as work stress. In an effort to adapt to the current difficult conditions, business women resort to alcohol.

Analisis Faktor Risiko Kejadian HIV/AIDS Berbasis Perilaku Manusia Di Kabupaten Madiun Tahun 2018

Background: HIV / AIDS is a behavior-based disease. The HIV epidemic is a serious problem and challenge to public health in the world both in developed and developing countries such as Indonesia. In Asia, the factors driving the HIV / AIDS epidemic are three high-risk behaviors, namely unprotected commercial sex, sharing syringes in drug users and sex between unprotected men. This study is an observational-analytic study that aims to analyze the influence of human behavior factors included in the practice of free sex, alcohol consumption practices, drug use practices, attitudes and practices of weak religious teachings against the incidence of HIV / AIDS in Madiun Regency.Methods: The research design used was case control, with a purposive sampling technique. Data was taken through interviews to respondents using questionnaires and analyzed using logistic regression tests. This research was conducted in the working area of the Madiun District AIDS Eradication Commission (KPAD) for 6 months, starting from January to June 2018. The case group in this study were 20 HIV-AIDS sufferers selected and the control group was family / neighboring of the HIV / AIDS sufferers who does not suffer from HIV / AIDS as many as 20 people.Result: The results of this study show that the practice of injecting drug use (p&gt; 0.005 which is 1,000) and alcoholic consumption practices (p&gt; 0.005 which is 0.355) is not a risk factor for HIV / AIDS in Madiun Regency. Whereas the risky sex practices and weak religious teaching practices are the risk factors for HIV / AIDS in Madiun Regency which value of p is 0.017 and 0.021.Conclusion : Thus there is a need for counseling efforts about safe sex and to increase faith and piety in order to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV / AIDS in Madiun regency.
