Being a Child, a Spiritual Child

How can spirituality be recognized in preschoolers? How do preschoolers express their spiritual being? How can we access this spirituality when interviews are inappropriate, and in-depth conversations are not adapted to their language abilities? These questions need to be answered in order for us to nourish and better sustain young children's spirituality. This article addresses this problem from the perspective of practical theology. It includes both a phenomenological and a hermeneutical approach to the question, and is rooted in the philosophical and theological concept of 'being'. The analysis of data highlights three modes of the child's being: Sensitive, Relational and Existential. It also explores the possible theological meaning of being a child.

Modern Religiousness : Extrinsic , Intrinsic or quest?

AbstractThe authors examine the religiousness of theology students and students in other disciplines at several German universities in a context of religious differentiation and pluralisation. Based on Batson's model, religiousness is classified into intrinsic, extrinsic and quest orientations. The religiousness of students of theology and students in other fields was found to differ significantly in the three dimensions. Non-theologians tended to ascribe negative value to the extrinsic and the intrinsic dimensions, with the intrinsic dimension being valued more negatively. At the same time they ascribed a slightly positive value to the quest orientation. Theology students valued all three dimensions positively, with especially strong positive value attached to the quest orientation. Using cluster analysis, four types of religiousness were developed: a "conventionally religious" type, a type described as "not religious in a Christian sense", a "questioning and religious" type, and a "strongly religious" type. Theology students fit mainly into the "strongly religious" and "questioning and religious" types. Students in other fields were concentrated in the "conventionally religious" and "not religious in a Christian sense" categories. At the end, the results are discussed from the perspective of practical theology.

A practical theological perspective on ecclesiology as seen from the viewpoint of communicative action theory. From a practical theological perspective, this article disputes the trend in present ecclesiastical thought, abstracting a model depicting the practical functioning of the church, which is based on a single biblical metaphor. The body-of-Christ metaphor is commonly used as a church model. The eagerness to implement this construct is inspired by a paradigm shift and the incorporation of the communicative actions theory at the level of metatheory. The hypothesis of this research is that, once the matrix of this metatheory has been clearly identified, it must be ap-plied to the aspects of church life. All the biblical metaphors shedding light on the functioning of the church need reinterpretation within the framework of a postmodern society and symmetrical communicative patterns. This way of constructing an ecclesiastical perspective, would lead to a more balanced church praxis.

A dialogical theory of communication from a practical theological perspective For our practical theological reflection on the communication of the gospel in ministry, we need a sound theory of communication. We choose for a dialogical theory of communication which suits the nature of Christian communication. This theory is developed with insights from theology and philosophy. The roots of a dialogical theory of communication are found in the thoughts of Socrates, Plato en Augustine. Kierkegaard is seen as the founder of the modern dialogical theory of communication, whilst the contributions of Buber, Jaspers, Gadamer and Habermas are traced. In an era of mass communication and propaganda, Christians need a communicative context where dialogue, freedom and an existential experience of God's love and grace can develop.

SUMMARY The author discusses the possibilities which the electronic mass media offer for the preaching of the Gospel from the perspective of practical theology. He pays attention to aspects such as: the communication assignment of the church, the Christian message in public life, word and image, the usefulness of the electronic mass media, the power and the uniqueness thereof. The author draws the conclusion that the most important function and value of these media for the preaching of the Gospel, are: the possibilities which they offer for the word of God to be present in public life; to convey information about church activities, and to educate the masses about the Bible and religion.
