Interaction and integration in power line design

An integrated, interactive environment for the structural and geometric design of power lines is described. New design concepts that achieve greater economy are introduced. The environment, developed on MS-DOS microcomputers, is the result of an international effort. A three-dimensional GIS-type representation of the terrain was adopted and described. Four different methods available to describe the strength of a structure in a structure file are detailed. Line installation, view functions, and reports, drafting, and archiving are discussed. >

Computer aided structural and geometric design of power lines

The authors describe an integrated computer environment for the structural design of new power lines, the evaluation of existing lines, and their long-term management. The contents of the various databases that are needed to describe an entire line are described. A way of verifying the strength of transmission and distribution structures is proposed. The authors illustrate how some of the engineering functions normally associated with line design can be performed interactively. All information needed to describe a line is contained in the files described. The terrain and line installation files are specific to a particular line. The other files can be shared across several line projects. In the interactive environment, the files are treated as objects, callable by name. Analysis of thermomechanical bending of self-contained oil-filled cables in ducts

An analytical method is presented for a complete study of the thermomechanical bending effects in underground HV (high-voltage) cables, confined in individual ducts, during daily temperature cycles. A segment of cable between two successive manholes is isolated, the structural continuity being maintained by equivalent axial springs at both ends. Up to a certain temperature, the central part of the segment remains completely restrained in the axial direction by the end forces added to the friction between the moving end sections of the cable and the supporting duct. Beyond this temperature, the entire segment moves axially. Cables rigid in bending remain straight, but more flexible ones assume a post-buckling deformed shape under the axial thrust. The resulting displacements, strains, and forces are calculated for evaluation of the cable fatigue. Parametric studies are presented for two typical self-contained cables to assist in the optimum design of underground power lines. >

Power line insulator analysis and design using finite elements and infinitesimal scaling

The infinitesimal scaling method is a new technique for solving boundary value problems. It is particularly suited for modeling unbounded regions in an economical and efficient manner. This method complies directly to standard finite elements. The global problem solution can be obtained by combining the solution to the interior non-linear region by traditional methods with the infinitesimal scaling solution for the exterior region.

Bioelectric Considerations in the Design of High-Voltage Power Lines

Public-health considerations require that all practical steps be taken to minimize the environmental electric and magnetic fields of high-voltage power lines. These fields are influenced not only by the line's operating voltage, but also by various design features including line configuration, phase-spacing, line height, and cable diameter. The largest effect is associated with line configuration. Beyond about 50 meters, the fields of a horizontal line are less than that of the equivalent vertical line; they become progressively more so with increasing distance. As a consequence, for a line having a given energy-carrying capacity, the horizontal configuration minimizes the ground-level fields at points beyond the right-of-way. None of the other design features considered had a significant effect on the fields.

Television Interference from Power Lines

This paper describes the two major phenomena on power lines which give rise to television interference, sparking, and corona. It describes the mechanism which causes each, the types of line construction on which they will occur, and the conditions under which each is likely to be prevalent. It then differentiates between those sources of interference which are affected mainly by power line design and construction practices and those that can be minimised by good line maintenance.

765-kV Power Line Carrier Communications III-Equipment Development and Design

This paper describes the basic approach taken in designing special SSB power line carrier equipment using baseband injection for the protection of AEP's 765-kV lines, and the unusual means for coupling these PLC signals to the transmission system in a most efficient and reliable manner through a three phase connection. Attenuation and impedance data measured with the coupling equipment connected to a 200 mile long line are included.

Radio Noise Design Guide for High-Voltage Transmission Lines

Radio, television, and audio interference are rapidly becoming controlling factors in the design and planning of power lines. With the increasing attention being directed to the problem of the deterioration of man's environment, this subject will be given greater consideration by utilities in the future. This paper, sponsored by the Radio Noise Subcommittee, summarizes the state of the art at this date. Utility engineers and the industry should find it a valuable tool in the design of high-voltage transmission lines.
