POTTERY WORKSHOP OF MYKILSKA SLOBIDKA VILLAGE IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY (based on the latest archaeological excavations)

The paper introduces materials from the archaeological excavations on the territory of the village of the 16th—19th centuries Mykilska Slobidka. The village has not been subject to systemic archaeological excavations before. In 2016—2018 we carried out the investigating in different parts of the village. It was fixed that despite the modern urban development, the cultural layer was preserved in some parts of the village. Obtaining materials indicate the existence of pottery production there. The most interesting is the ceramic collection associated with the pottery complex of the beginning of the 19th century. The collection allows us to characterize the assortment of the pottery manufacturing in the Mykilska Slobidka village in the first half of the 19th century. Among the typical products of the workshops were pots decorated with white and red engobe painting, jugs, bowls, lids, mugs, flowerpots, bricks and probably tiles etc. It is interesting that there are no pottery clay deposits in the vicinity of the village. So it is possibly the clay was brought from other villages, may be on the other (right) bank of the Dnieper River.

CERAMIC ASSEMBLAGE FROM THE POTTERY KILN OF THE MIDDLE OF THE 15th — THE BEGINNING OF THE 16th CENTURY IN KAMIANETS-PODILSKYI

The paper analyzed a ceramic assemblage from the excavation of the pottery kiln of the middle of the 15th — the beginning of the 16th century. It was excavated in 2016 on the territory of Kamyanets-Podilskyi on the Troitska street. The vessels are divided into types according to their function and morphological features.
 It is noted that during this period can be observed the rise of the pottery manufacturing in general, which is associated with certain events in the history of the town: it became the center of Podolsk land, and then has obtained the status of a royal city.

How Was Neolithic Pottery Fired? An Exploration of the Effects of Firing Dynamics on Ceramic Products

The presented study is focused on the development of a new methodology for estimating the heating rate during firing as one of the principal characteristics of the firing process. We experimentally determined the limits of the heating dynamics (heating rate, cooling rate and soaking time) of the firing processes for two basic alternatives for pottery firing considered for the Early Neolithic in Central Europe—bonfires and single-chamber kilns—and analysed the thermal gradient within the walls of the fired pottery as the effect of these heating dynamics. Mineralogical transformations caused by the firing procedures were estimated by X-ray diffraction in order to apply the results of the experimental measurements in a study of archaeological ceramics. The difference between the maximum temperatures on the outer surfaces and in the cores of the vessel walls at the places where the pottery is exposed to the fastest heating and cooling rates appears to be a usable basis for distinguishing between the tested firing structures. XRD analysis has demonstrated that temperature differences measured and modelled experimentally can be traced to the products of these processes with sufficient reliability. The results of the experimental study were applied in the interpretation of the firing process employed in the manufacture of Early Neolithic pottery obtained from the Linear Pottery culture settlement in Bylany (Czech Republic).

RAGAM HIAS TEMBIKAR MATANO KORELASINYA DENGAN TRADISI TEMBIKAR SAHUYN-KALANAY

Matano is the name of a lake in the regency of Luwu, South Sulawesi. Matano is famous for the deepest lake in Southeast Asia (± 590 m) and the eighth-deepest in the world. In this lake and its surroundings are archaeological findings such as metal artifacts, potteries, and ceramics. The presence of potteries at Lake Matano Site and its surrounding areas is important to note in the attempt to gain knowledge to reveal an aspect of life at Lake Matano area. The problems encountered include the dispersion and relations among those pottery artifacts at the sites of Matano and the surrounding areas. Furthermore, we would like to know whether the existence of great traditions that flourished in Southeast Asia during the Palaeometallic period, which are thought to greatly influenced the pottery development in East Indonesia, such as the Sahuyn-Kalanay, also influenced the pottery tradition at Matano. Methods of analytical descriptive and laboratories on pottery shapes and decoration motifs were applied to understand one of the aspects of pottery manufacture. There are some similarities in shapes, decoration motifs, and manufacturing techniques with the Sahuyn-Kalanay tradition in term of surface treatment, particularly in incised, stamped, gouged, and sliced decorating techniques.

Characterizing the Early Bronze III–IVA1 pottery of the northern Levant through typological and petrographic analyses. The case study of Tell Mardikh/Ebla and Tell Tuqan (Syria)

This article uses the results of petrographic analyses carried out on the Early Bronze (EB) III–IVA1 ceramics from Ebla and Tell Tuqan, combined with the functional and morphological classification of the ceramic repertoire, with the dual aims of building a regional ceramic chronology and analysing pottery production at both sites in a diachronic perspective. These datasets indicate, on the one hand, a continuous trend in ceramic production between the EB III and EB IVA1–2 periods, both in term of vessel shapes and in the selection of pastes employed in pottery manufacture. On the other hand, some substantial changes can be detected, suggesting a growing degree of standardization in manufacturing processes and a functional specialization of the ceramic assemblage (with an emphasis on drinking vessels) occurring around the mid-3rd millennium BC. In conclusion, an attempt is made to link these changes to major socio-political developments that took place in the northern Levant and upper Mesopotamia around the middle of the 3rd millennium BC.

A new nondestructive approach to chemical analysis of potsherds using an X‐ray fluorescence microscope: Case study about the past pottery manufacture in the Yaeyama Islands

In archeology, pottery represents an important class of artifacts giving information on the past human activity, the ecology, and ancient cultural groups. Some chemical analytic methods, including X‐ray fluorescent analysis, were adopted for the archeological study of pottery. However, these techniques also involve problems, including the destructive analysis of materials, and cannot analyze the original clay condition of pottery. To address this, we carried out nondestructive chemical analysis of 13 potsherds excavated from the Yaeyama Islands in the southern Japan archipelagos using X‐ray fluorescence microscopy. Two analytic methods were used, elemental mapping and multipoint spectral measurement, making it possible to obtain a visualized elemental distribution on potsherd surface and a detailed multipoint elemental composition of the same sample for the multivariate statistical analysis. In this study, the visualized images suggested that calcium particles were mixed to temper the materials, and their size and quantity differed between potsherds, whereas the uniformity of clay substrate, including the quantities of iron and silicon on multipoint measurement, was a characteristic of each potsherd. Therefore, principal component analysis and nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis of the potsherds suggest that the differences between the Yaeyama Islands in terms of pottery manufacturing technology are due to chronological factors in this case. Our method represents an effective new approach to the pottery study for technological change.

Pottery Goes Public. Performing Archaeological Research Amid the Audience

Abstract The project Pottery Goes Public explores the potential of 3D analytical tools to assess to what extent they can provide us with new interpretations and insights into the technological aspects of ancient pottery manufacturing. However, developing innovative 3D imaging techniques for ceramic analysis is not the only aim of the project. Since its inception, Pottery Goes Public has been designed to involve a wider audience not only into the study of ancient potting techniques, but also into the very process of carrying out the research. As advocated by the proponents of a reflexive approach to archaeology, in order to make the past relevant to contemporary society it is imperative for the archaeologist to include all interested parties into every stage of the analysis, from the formulation of the research questions to the dissemination of outputs. In this sense, the deployment of modern 3D technologies proved to be an indisputably powerful medium of communication and interaction with the public at large. Performing live archaeological research with cutting edge tools is a key step towards opening up academic research to multiple actors and actively engaging them with the archaeological interpretative process.

Spiralled patchwork in pottery manufacture and the introduction of farming to Southern Europe—ERRATUM

Pottery-manufacturing sequences can act as proxies for human migration and interaction. A good example is provided by the �spiralled patchwork technology� (SPT) identified at two key early farming sites in the Ligurian-Provencal Arc in the north-west of the Italian peninsula. SPT is distinct from the ceramic technology used by early farmer communities in south-east Italy that shows technical continuity with the southern Balkans. Macroscopic analysis and micro-computed tomography suggests the presence of two communities of practice, and thus two distinct social groups in the northern Mediterranean: one of southern Balkan tradition, the other (associated with SPT) of as yet unknown origin. The identification of SPT opens up the exciting possibility of tracing the origins and migrations of a second distinct group of early farmers into Southern Europe

Chance and Tradition in the Architectural Ceramics of Assemble

The London-based architecture and design collective Assemble make two kinds of “architectural ceramics”: clay-based objects that ornament buildings, and domestic wares produced as part of larger architectural projects. The collective started the Granby Workshop for the production of unique objects for the home in 2014 and ceramics also feature in contracted architectural projects. This essay positions Assemble’s use of ceramics between the traditions of studio pottery and machine-based ceramic manufacturing. Through discussion of a few recent examples it reveals how the collective are realizing the commercial and pedagogical potential of the medium.

Study of clay soils swelling by the new method based on Laser Interferometry and the classical Odometer test

Geotechnical engineering participates in the act of construction, which means that it must meet a double concern for securityand economy. Therefore, an essential part of the engineer's responsibility rests on the recognition of soils in order to determine their nature and properties (taking into account the flow of water). In the present work, we measure the swelling and the permeability by detection of the swelling, by our new optical method based on the interferometry-laser, invented by Hassan Asselman, within the team of Optics and photonics of sciences faculty, Tetouan-Morocco. This new prototype allows us to directly measure the following parameters: the permeability k (m / s), the Young module Eand the swelling index Cs. For the latter parameter, the evolution of the strain as a function of the stresses ρ (Pa) is measured for a given degree of saturation (Until saturation). Moreover, we will use the classical odometer test, which reproduces the conditions of deformation of the soils. Using the results of the latter by the graphic methods of Taylor and Gasagrande, it is possible to determine the value of the coefficient of consolidation of the soil Cv. According to the Darcy theoretical modelfor a saturated medium, Cv depends on the permeability, the compressibility coefficient mv (or the inverse of the model of Young odometric) and the voluminal weight of the water γw. These tests will be carried out at the GEORET Geotechnical Laboratory in Tetouan. To perform this work, we chose a sample of claydistrubed, already characterized by X-ray diffraction (whose clay fraction is illite). It is extracted from the so-called "Teffalin" quarry of the Tetouan region, used in the manufacture of pottery. Finally we give a comparison between our new patented method and the classic Odometric test

Variability of lithic tools used in the process of making hand-made pottery in Pre-European Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain)

This article presents a group of unintentionally modified stone tools that served in different phases of the chaînes opératoires of pottery manufacture on the Island of Gran Canaria. The tools were recovered in the cave of La Cerera, a part of a pre-Hispanic settlement spanning the 7th to 12th centuries cal CE. Tool classification was carried out by morphological and use-wear analyses. Data from these observations were contrasted with the ethnoarchaeological results of a project carried out in collaboration with Gran Canaria's last traditional potters. The results identify a series of technical actions undertaken in the different phases of recent pottery manufacture. Furthermore, the project singles out certain indigenous ceramic traditions that have survived until the 20th century, as well as exogenous methods adopted by local productions after Gran Canaria's colonisation in the 15th century. Moreover, the results of this study serve as a reference to assist identifying this category of stone tools in other archaeological contexts.

The Production Technology of Traditional Pottery Terenang in Temin Kraf

Terenang is one of the local traditional earthenware products in Peninsular Malaysia other than Labu Sayong and Mambong pottery. Terenang production activities centered in Kampung Pasir Durian and Temin Kraf in Jerantut, Pahang. Along with the modern advancement, the manufacturing of traditional pottery is also experiencing changes in terms of technology usage as demonstrated through the Labu Sayong’s production in Perak. The use of modern technology in the manufacturing process is very helpful in preserving the activity of extinction in development. However, the question is whether the Terenang pottery production activity uses the same modern technology during the distribution process. This research uses qualitative research approach that captures descriptively through observation, interview and document analysis towards the Terenang production process at Temin Kraf. The results showed that the use of modern technology in the manufacture of traditional pottery craft Terenang at Temin Kraf. This can be observed in the process of primary materials, the manufacturing process, the decor, and the combustion method. Temin Kraf’s effort in utilizing the use of modern technology is a step that brings this pottery activity to another new level that can diversify the types and designs of Terenang as well as being able to increase the distribution amount immediately. However, this study suggests the need for a proactive and drastic efforts taken by the government toensure that this legacy will continue to be preserved in order to be appreciated by future generations.

Perceptions of Scottish pottery: nineteenth-century collecting in National Museums Scotland

The manufacture of domestic pottery in Scotland was an important industry producing vast quantities of wares for both the home and export markets. The industry reached its height in the nineteenth century, the era that saw the inception of international exhibitions and the establishment of industrial museums. Over recent decades Scottish pottery has been collected by both museums and individual collectors and research in the field of material culture has uncovered the history of this significant industry. This paper will examine nineteenth-century attitudes to contemporary collecting of Scottish pottery, focusing on two of the institutions which eventually came to be absorbed into National Museums Scotland – the Industrial Museum of Scotland and its successor the Edinburgh Museum of Science and Art. Looking at the relationship between pottery manufacturers and these institutions will show how nineteenth-century perceptions of Scottish pottery were influenced by ideas of identity, art and education.

Firing Pots in Contemporary South-Eastern Botswana

ABSTRACTFor many years, archaeologists in Southern Africa have equated pottery “style” with archaeological “cultures” and modern ethno-linguistic groups. In order to investigate this association, we undertook an ethnoarchaeological study of 41 contemporary potters in south-eastern Botswana to observe what social groupings of potters correlate with their preferences for a particular style of making and decorating pots. This paper presents and analyses the firing stage of pottery manufacturing in contemporary south-eastern Botswana and looks for social boundaries in the preference for firing techniques. Unlike a study completed half a century ago, we find that firing technique preferences are village based and reflect the common technique used by potters in that locality, regardless of their linguistic affiliation, ethnic group membership, gender, age, religious persuasion or the network in which they learnt their craft.

Times They Were a-Changing

Locally produced pottery underwent significant changes in Iron Age Mallorca, changes that can be traced in a range of aspects of the chaîne opératoire, including raw materials, paste recipes, firing strategies and potters’ skills. This study explores technological changes in pottery production by combining a social understanding of technology and a contextual approach to historical processes involving the Balearic Islands and their indigenous inhabitants. Changes in pottery manufacturing techniques and materials are first investigated through archaeometric analysis of a large ceramic assemblage from three sites in southwest Mallorca. Secondly, the possible implications of culture contact between indigenous communities and foreign visitors for local pottery production are examined. Finally, the changes in local pottery and new ways of organising production are considered in the social context of Late Iron Age indigenous communities on the Balearic Islands. This multiple perspective relies on both external and internal factors for interpretation, and suggests diverse causes and consequences for technological change; it also highlights questions about the social organisation of production, information and knowledge transfer, learning contexts and the social value of indigenous pottery.

From potters’ hands to settlement dynamics in the Early Neolithic site of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes (Picardy, France)

The paper follows on from a joint research project on the ceramics from the late LBK settlement of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes, Picardy region, north-eastern France. In the course of this project, studies on raw materials, manufacturing sequences and decoration techniques have revealed a wide variety of technical practices throughout the occupation of the site. Most recently, analysis of variations in raw materials and tempers in relation to manufacturing sequences revealed that production was mostly carried out at house level, with the producers in each house implementing their own clay recipe and pot-forming method. Here we extend this research by comparing data on pot-forming and decoration at Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes. In this new study, no obvious relationships could be observed between pottery manufacturing sequences and decoration. However, comparison of the various house assemblages indicates a possible link between atypical decoration (i.e. non-local LBK styles) and exogenous pot-forming methods. Although requiring validation on a larger sample of ceramic assemblages from other sites, these preliminary observations provide some new insights into the complex dynamics at play in LBK settlements.

Variability and continuity of ceramic manufacturing of prehistoric pottery from Upper Nubia, Sudan: An ethnographic comparison

In Upper Nubia (currently northern Sudan), the art of making pottery has a very ancient and durable tradition, dating back to the early Holocene and preceding the introduction of a food-producing economy. Ethnographic case studies have demonstrated that this tradition has been preserved in many areas of the country. This paper presents a comparative study of ancient and modern traditional ceramics from four prehistoric sites at Sai Island, in the river Nile, and a present-day workshop located in the nearby village of Abri. The aim of the study was to investigate any diachronic changes in the selection of clayey raw material and the technological processes of the manufacturing sequence. The study combined macroscopic and analytical approaches and examined a large set of ceramic and local clay samples by means of petrographic (OM), mineralogical (X-ray powder diffraction; XRPD) and chemical (X-ray fluorescence; XRF) analyses. The resulting data underline a remarkable continuity in raw material sourcing and composition, as well as in many technological processes, from the ceramic assemblages dating from Abkan cultural horizon (c. 5500 BCE) until to the present-day production in Abri. This continuity emerged after a preceding discontinuity, indicated by a different selection of clay raw material and tempers in the oldest production dating to the Khartoum Variant horizon (c. 7600–4800 BCE).
