Altered Error Monitoring and Decreased Flanker Task Accuracy in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

The error-related negativity (ERN) and error positivity (Pe) are components of the event-related potential following an error that are potential mechanistic biomarkers of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The study examined the ERN, Pe, flanker task accuracy, and clinical measures in 105 OCD cases and 105 matched healthy controls (HC) ages 8-18years. Higher flanker task accuracy in all participants was associated with an increased ERN amplitude and increased difference between Pe and correct positivity amplitudes (ΔPe). Compared to HC, OCD cases had an increased ERN but decreased ΔPe and flanker task accuracy. Those differences were also significant in tic-related and non-tic-related OCD cases compared to HC. A lower ΔPe was associated in cases with an earlier age at OCD symptom onset. The results support the hypothesis that OCD involves defects in an error monitoring system and suggest a reduced ΔPe may compromise error signaling and cause uncertainty about the correctness of a response.

A Genome-Wide Association Study of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection Severity in Infants.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant cause of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most children experience at least one 1 RSV infection by the age of two 2 years, but not all develop severe disease. However, the understanding of genetic risk factors for severe RSV is incomplete. Consequently, we conducted a genome-wide association study of RSV severity. Disease severity was assessed by the ReSVinet scale, in a cohort of 251 infants aged 1 week to 1 year. Genotyping data were collected from multiple European study sites as part of the RESCEU Consortium. Linear regression models were used to assess the impact of genotype on RSV severity and gene expression as measured by microarray. While no SNPs reached the genome-wide statistical significance threshold (P < 5 × 10-8), we identified 816 candidate SNPs with a P-value of <1 × 10-4. Functional annotation of candidate SNPs highlighted genes relevant to neutrophil trafficking and cytoskeletal functions, including LSP1 and RAB27A. Moreover, SNPs within the RAB27A locus significantly altered gene expression (false discovery rate, FDR P < .05). These findings may provide insights into genetic mechanisms driving severe RSV infection, offering biologically relevant information for future investigations.

Formylated Peptide Receptor-1-Mediated Gut Inflammation as a Therapeutic Target in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Formylated peptide receptor (FPR)-1 is a G-coupled receptor that senses foreign bacterial and host-derived mitochondrial formylated peptides (FPs), leading to innate immune system activation. We sought to investigate the role of FPR1-mediated inflammation and its potential as a therapeutic target in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We characterized FPR1 gene and protein expression in 8 human IBD (~1000 patients) datasets with analysis on disease subtype, mucosal inflammation, and drug response. We performed in vivo dextran-sulfate sodium (DSS) colitis in C57/BL6 FPR1 knockout mice. In ex vivo studies, we studied the role of mitochondrial FPs and pharmacological blockade of FPR1 using cyclosporin H in human peripheral blood neutrophils. Finally, we assess mitochondrial FPs as a potential mechanistic biomarker in the blood and stools of patients with IBD. Detailed in silico analysis in human intestinal biopsies showed that FPR1 is highly expressed in IBD (n = 207 IBD vs 67 non-IBD controls, P < .001), and highly correlated with gut inflammation in ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) (both P < .001). FPR1 receptor is predominantly expressed in leukocytes, and we showed significantly higher FPR1+ve neutrophils in inflamed gut tissue section in IBD (17 CD and 24 UC; both P < .001). Further analysis in 6 independent IBD (data available under Gene Expression Omnibus accession numbers GSE59071, GSE206285, GSE73661, GSE16879, GSE92415, and GSE235970) showed an association with active gut inflammation and treatment resistance to infliximab, ustekinumab, and vedolizumab. FPR1 gene deletion is protective in murine DSS colitis with lower gut neutrophil inflammation. In the human ex vivo neutrophil system, mitochondrial FP, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit-6 (ND6) is a potent activator of neutrophils resulting in higher CD62L shedding, CD63 expression, reactive oxygen species production, and chemotactic capacity; these effects are inhibited by cyclosporin H. We screened for mitochondrial ND6 in IBD (n = 54) using ELISA and detected ND6 in stools with median values of 2.2 gg/mL (interquartile range [IQR] 0.0-4.99; range 0-53.3) but not in blood. Stool ND6 levels, however, were not significantly correlated with paired stool calprotectin, C-reactive protein, and clinical IBD activity. Our data suggest that FPR1-mediated neutrophilic inflammation is a tractable target in IBD; however, further work is required to clarify the clinical utility of mitochondrial FPs as a potential mechanistic marker for future stratification.

A mechanistic biomarker investigation of fialuridine hepatotoxicity using the chimeric TK-NOG Hu-liver mouse model and in vitro micropatterned hepatocyte cocultures.

Fialuridine (FIAU) is a nucleoside-based drug that caused liver failure and deaths in a human clinical trial that were not predicted by nonclinical safety studies. A recent report concluded that a TK-NOG humanized liver (hu-liver) mouse model detected human-specific FIAU liver toxicity, and broader use of that model could improve drug safety testing. We further evaluated this model at similar dose levels to assess FIAU sensitivity and potential mechanistic biomarkers. Although we were unable to reproduce the marked acute liver toxicity with two separate studies (including one with a "sensitized" donor), we identified molecular biomarkers reflecting the early stages of FIAU mitochondrial toxicity, which were not seen with its stereoisomer (FIRU). Dose dependent FIAU-induced changes in hu-liver mice included more pronounced reductions in mitochondrial to nuclear DNA (mtDNA/nucDNA) ratios in human hepatocytes compared to mouse hepatocytes and kidneys of the same animals. FIAU treatment also triggered a p53 transcriptional response and opposing changes in transcripts of nuclear- and mitochondrial-encoded mitochondrial proteins. The time dependent accumulation of FIAU into mtDNA is consistent with the ≥9-week latency of liver toxicity observed for FIAU in the clinic. Similar changes were observed in an in vitro micro-patterned hepatocyte coculture system. In addition, FIAU-dependent mtDNA/nucDNA ratio and transcriptional alterations, especially reductions in mitochondrially encoded transcripts, were seen in livers of non-engrafted TK-NOG and CD-1 mice dosed for a shorter period. Conclusion: These mechanistic biomarker findings can be leveraged in an in vitro model and in a more routine preclinical model (CD-1 mice) to identify nucleosides with such a FIAU-like mitochondrial toxicity mechanistic liability potential. Further optimization of the TK-NOG hu-liver mouse model is necessary before broader adoption for drug safety testing.

Integrative Multi-Omics Analysis for the Determination of Non-Muscle Invasive vs. Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer: A Pilot Study.

Objectives: The molecular landscape of non-muscle-invasive (NMIBC) and muscle-invasive (MIBC) bladder cancer based on molecular characteristics is essential but poorly understood. In this pilot study we aimed to identify a multi-omics signature that can distinguish MIBC from NMIBC. Such a signature can assist in finding potential mechanistic biomarkers and druggable targets. Methods: Patients diagnosed with NMIBC (n = 15) and MIBC (n = 11) were recruited at a tertiary-care hospital in Nanjing from 1 April 2021, and 31 July 2021. Blood, urine and stool samples per participant were collected, in which the serum metabolome, urine metabolome, gut microbiome, and serum extracellular vesicles (EV) proteome were quantified. The differences of the global profiles and individual omics measure between NMIBC vs. MIBC were assessed by permutational multivariate analysis and the Mann–Whitney test, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association of each identified analyte with NMIBC vs. MIBC, and the Spearman correlation was used to investigate the correlations between identified analytes, where both were adjusted for age, sex and smoking status. Results: Among 3168 multi-omics measures that passed the quality control, 159 were identified to be differentiated in NMIBC vs. MIBC. Of these, 46 analytes were associated with bladder cancer progression. In addition, the global profiles showed significantly different urine metabolome (p = 0.029), gut microbiome (p = 0.036), and serum EV (extracellular vesicles) proteome (p = 0.039) but not serum metabolome (p = 0.059). We also observed 17 (35%) analytes that had been developed as drug targets. Multiple interactions were obtained between the identified analytes, whereas for the majority (61%), the number of interactions was at 11–20. Moreover, unconjugated bilirubin (p = 0.009) and white blood cell count (p = 0.006) were also shown to be different in NMIBC and MIBC, and associated with 11 identified omics analytes. Conclusions: The pilot study has shown promising to monitor the progression of bladder cancer by integrating multi-omics data and deserves further investigations.

Rationale and design of a screening study to detect schistosomiasis-associated pulmonary hypertension in Ethiopia and Zambia.

Schistosomiasis is a major cause of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) worldwide, but the prevalence and risk factors for schistosomiasis‐associated PAH (SchPAH) development are not well understood. Schistosomiasis‐associated hepatosplenic disease (SchHSD) is thought to be a major risk factor for PAH development. Herein, we describe our plans for prospectively screening SchHSD subjects for clinical evidence of PAH at two major academic medical centers and national referral hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Lusaka, Zambia. The screening study will primarily be conducted by echocardiography, in addition to clinical assessments. Plasma samples will be drawn and banked for subsequent analysis based on preclinical animal model rationale. If successful, this study will demonstrate feasibility of conducting prospective cohort studies of SchPAH screening in schistosomiasis‐endemic regions of Africa, and provide initial data on clinic‐based disease prevalence and potential mechanistic biomarkers underlying disease pathogenesis.

Extracellular vesicles package dsDNA to aggravate Crohn\u2019s disease by activating the STING pathway

Crohn’s disease (CD) is an intestinal immune-dysfunctional disease. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-enclosed particles full of functional molecules, e.g., nuclear acids. Recently, EVs have been shown to participate in the development of CD by realizing intercellular communication among intestinal cells. However, the role of EVs carrying double-strand DNA (dsDNA) shed from sites of intestinal inflammation in CD has not been investigated. Here we isolated EVs from the plasma or colon lavage of murine colitis and CD patients. The level of exosomal dsDNA, including mtDNA and nDNA, significantly increased in murine colitis and active human CD, and was positively correlated with the disease activity. Moreover, the activation of the STING pathway was verified in CD. EVs from the plasma of active human CD triggered STING activation in macrophages in vitro. EVs from LPS-damaged colon epithelial cells were also shown to raise inflammation in macrophages via activating the STING pathway, but the effect disappeared after the removal of exosomal dsDNA. These findings were further confirmed in STING-deficient mice and macrophages. STING deficiency significantly ameliorated colitis. Besides, potential therapeutic effects of GW4869, an inhibitor of EVs release were assessed. The application of GW4869 successfully ameliorated murine colitis by inhibiting STING activation. In conclusion, exosomal dsDNA was found to promote intestinal inflammation via activating the STING pathway in macrophages and act as a potential mechanistic biomarker and therapeutic target of CD.

Identification of neutrophil \u03b22-integrin LFA-1 as a potential mechanistic biomarker in ANCA-associated vasculitis via microarray and validation analyses

BackgroundLeukocyte activation by anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) and the subsequent leukocyte–endothelium interaction play a key role in the development of endothelial damage in ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). In contrast to that of leukocyte activation, the exact role of the leukocyte–endothelium interaction via integrin remains unclear. Here, we performed microarray and validation analyses to explore association between the expression levels of lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) and the clinical characteristics of patients with AAV.MethodsWe performed gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) to identify the functional gene sets differentially expressed between patients with AAV and other types of vasculitis and the healthy controls (HCs). Flow cytometry was performed to validate the GSEA results. Treatment-naïve patients were monitored until 24 weeks of treatment. To examine the role of LFA-1 in the neutrophil–endothelium interaction, we performed a leukocyte adhesion and transmigration assay using peripheral blood and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).ResultsGSEA revealed that the molecular pathways involving integrin-related genes were significantly upregulated in patients with AAV compared to that in patients with other types of vasculitis and the HCs. Flow cytometry revealed that the percentage of neutrophils expressing LFA-1 was significantly higher in patients with AAV than in those with large-vessel vasculitis or polyarteritis nodosa and the HCs. LFA-1 levels in the neutrophils were higher in patients with MPO-ANCA-positive expression than in those with a positive PR3-ANCA expression and correlated with the peripheral eosinophil count, serum rheumatoid factor titre, serum C-reactive protein levels, and the vasculitis activity score of systemic and chest components. After 24 weeks of treatment, including prednisolone, cyclophosphamide, rituximab, azathioprine, methotrexate, and/or tacrolimus, neutrophil LFA-1 expression remained high in the non-responder patients, but decreased in the responder patients. The in vitro assay showed that leukocyte migration toward HUVECs was dependent on the interaction between LFA-1 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM1); the migration of leukocytes was inhibited by blocking the adhesion of LFA-1 to ICAM1.ConclusionsThe expression of LFA-1 in neutrophils is increased in patients with AAV. Neutrophil LFA-1 levels correlate with the clinical features of AAV. Inhibiting the adhesion of LFA-1 and ICAM1 impedes the neutrophil–endothelium interaction and may have a therapeutic role in AAV.

NDRG4 promoter hypermethylation is a mechanistic biomarker associated with metastatic progression in breast cancer patients

The risk of developing metastatic disease in breast cancer patients is traditionally predictable based on the number of positive axillary lymph nodes, complemented with additional clinicopathological factors. However, since lymph node-negative patients have a 20–30% probability of developing metastatic disease, lymph node information alone is insufficient to accurately assess individual risk. Molecular approaches, such as multigene expression panels, analyze a set of cancer-related genes that more accurately predict the early risk of metastasis and the treatment response. Here, we present N-Myc downstream-regulated gene 4 (NDRG4) epigenetic silencing as a mechanistic biomarker of metastasis in ductal invasive breast tumors. While aberrant NDRG4 DNA hypermethylation is significantly associated with the development of metastatic disease, downregulation of NDRG4 transcription and protein expression is functionally associated with enhanced lymph node adhesion and cell mobility. Here, we show that epigenetic silencing of NDRG4 modulates integrin signaling by assembling β1-integrins into large punctate clusters at the leading edge of tumor cells to promote an “adhesive switch,” decreasing cell adhesion to fibronectin and increasing cell adhesion and migration towards vitronectin, an important component of human lymph nodes. Taken together, our functional and clinical observations suggest that NDRG4 is a potential mechanistic biomarker in breast cancer that is functionally associated with metastatic disease.

Phosphoprotein expression profiles in rat kidney injury: Source for potential mechanistic biomarkers.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined by the Acute Kidney Injury Network as “functional and structural disorder or signs of renal damage including any defect from blood or urine test, or tissue imaging that is less than 3 months.” AKI is the most common cause of renal dysfunction.1 Understanding of molecular determinants of AKI induction and development could help to diagnose and monitor kidney injury in the clinic as well as to select safe drug candidates in preclinical drug development. Protein phosphorylation plays a significant role in a wide range of cellular processes and can directly indicate an active/inactive state of cellular enzymes and the signalling pathways in injury initiation and progression. Alteration of phosphorylation of some proteins was already described for kidney injury: MAPK activation in cisplatin‐induced nephrotoxicity,2 increased phosphorylation of moesin and HSP90ɑ in tubular cells in response to TGF‐β3 and increased phosphorylation of lamin A and phospholamban in a salt‐load rat model of kidney damage.4 Our study aimed at identifying changes in phosphoprotein expression and creating comprehensive phosphoprotein profiles of nephron‐specific injuries in a time‐dependent manner. To meet this objective, we utilized rat models of drug‐induced kidney injury (DIKI), which were induced with three nephrotoxicants over a 28‐day period: cisplatin (proximal tubules); puromycin (glomerulus) and N‐phenylanthranylic acid (NPAA, collecting ducts). The phosphoproteins were studied by antibody microarrays in kidney tissue on days 7, day 14 and day 28. We established changes in phosphoprotein expression in response to kidney injury and associated these changes with biological processes. Up‐regulation of MEK2 (pThyr394) on day 14 in cisplatin and puromycin‐induced injuries was confirmed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Identified phosphoprotein signatures provide a link to molecular mechanisms of kidney injury/recovery as well as a source for potential mechanistic biomarkers.

Fecal Clostridiales distribution and short-chain fatty acids reflect bowel habits in irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common functional gastrointestinal disorder, is classified according to bowel habits as IBS with constipation (IBS-C), with diarrhea (IBS-D), with alternating constipation and diarrhea (IBS-M), and unsubtyped (IBS-U). The mechanisms leading to the different IBS forms are mostly unknown. This study aims to evaluate whether specific fecal bacterial taxa and/or short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) can be used to distinguish IBS subtypes and are relevant for explaining the clinical differences between IBS subcategories. We characterized five fecal samples collected at 4-weeks intervals from 40 IBS patients by 16S rRNA gene profiling and SCFA quantification. Finally, we investigated the potential correlations in IBS subtypes between the fecal microbial signatures and host physiological and clinical parameters. We found significant differences in the distribution of Clostridiales OTUs among IBS subtypes and reduced levels of SCFAs in IBS-C compared to IBS-U and IBS-D patients. Correlation analyses showed that the diverse representation of Clostridiales OTUs between IBS subtypes was associated with altered levels of SCFAs; furthermore, the same OTUs and SCFAs were associated with the fecal cytokine levels and stool consistency. Our results suggest that intestinal Clostridiales and SCFAs might serve as potential mechanistic biomarkers of IBS subtypes and represent therapeutic targets.

Mitochondrial DNA Is a Pro-Inflammatory Damage-Associated Molecular Pattern Released During Active IBD.

Due to common evolutionary origins, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) shares many similarities with immunogenic bacterial DNA. MtDNA is recognized as a pro-inflammatory damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) with a pathogenic role in several inflammatory diseases. We hypothesised that mtDNA is released during active disease, serving as a key pro-inflammatory factor in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Between 2014 and 2015, we collected plasma separated within 2 hours of sampling from 97 prospectively recruited IBD patients (67 ulcerative colitis [UC] and 30 Crohn's disease [CD]) and 40 non-IBD controls. We measured circulating mtDNA using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (amplifying mitochondria COXIII/ND2 genes) and also in mouse colitis induced by dextran sulfate-sodium (DSS). We used a mass spectometry approach to detect free plasma mitochondrial formylated peptides. Furthermore, we examined for mitochondrial damage using electron microscopy (EM) and TLR9 expression, the target for mtDNA, in human intestinal IBD mucosa. Plasma mtDNA levels were increased in UC and CD (both P < 0.0001) compared with non-IBD controls. These levels were significantly correlated to blood (C-reactive protein, albumin, white cell count), clinical and endoscopic markers of severity, and disease activity. In active UC, we identified 5 mitochondrial formylated peptides (the most abundant being fMMYALF with known chemoattractant function) in plasma. We observed mitochondrial damage in inflamed UC mucosa and significantly higher fecal MtDNA levels (vs non-IBD controls [P < 0.0001]), which supports gut mucosal mitochondrial DAMP release as the primary source. In parallel, plasma mtDNA levels increased during induction of acute DSS colitis and were associated with more severe colitis (P < 0.05). In active IBD, TLR9+ lamina propria inflammatory cells were significantly higher in UC and CD compared with controls (P < 0.05). We present the first evidence to show that mtDNA is released during active IBD. MtDNA is a potential mechanistic biomarker, and our data point to mtDNA-TLR9 as a therapeutic target in IBD. 10.1093/ibd/izy095_videoizy095.video5776747659001.

Quantitative analysis of lipids: a higher-throughput LC-MS/MS-based method and its comparison to ELISA.

Aim:Lipids such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes and thromboxanes are released as a result of an inflammatory episode in pain (central and peripheral).Methodology & results:To measure these lipids as potential mechanistic biomarkers in neuropathic pain models, we developed a higher-throughput LC–MS/MS-based method with simultaneous detection of PGE2, PGD2, PGF2α, LTB4, TXB2 and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol in brain and spinal cord tissues. We also demonstrate that the LC–MS/MS method was more sensitive and specific in differentiating PGE2 levels in CNS tissues compared with ELISA.Conclusion:The ability to modify the LC–MS/MS method to accommodate numerous other lipids in one analysis, demonstrates that the presented method offers a cost–effective and more sensitive alternative to ELISA method useful in drug discovery settings.

Blunted Neural Response to Rewards as a Prospective Predictor of the Development of Depression in Adolescent Girls.

A blunted neural response to rewards has recently emerged as a potential mechanistic biomarker of adolescent depression. The reward positivity, an event-related potential elicited by feedback indicating monetary gain relative to loss, has been associated with risk for depression. The authors examined whether the reward positivity prospectively predicted the development of depression 18 months later in a large community sample of adolescent girls. The sample included 444 girls 13.5-15.5 years old with no lifetime history of a depressive disorder, along with a biological parent for each girl. At baseline, the adolescents' reward positivity was measured using a monetary guessing task, their current depressive symptoms were assessed using a self-report questionnaire, and the adolescents' and parents' lifetime psychiatric histories were evaluated with diagnostic interviews. The same interview and questionnaire were administered to the adolescents again approximately 18 months later. A blunted reward positivity at baseline predicted first-onset depressive disorder and greater depressive symptom scores 18 months later. The reward positivity was also a significant predictor independent of other prominent risk factors, including baseline depressive symptoms and adolescent and parental lifetime psychiatric history. The combination of a blunted reward positivity and greater depressive symptom scores at baseline provided the greatest positive predictive value for first-onset depressive disorder. This study provides strong converging evidence that a blunted neural response to rewards precedes adolescent-onset depression and symptom emergence. Blunted neural response may therefore constitute an important target for screening and prevention.

Anti‐inflammatory Effects of Cocoa Procyanidins

Inflammation, as evaluated by increased inflammatory cytokines and other markers, represents a link between obesity and its comorbidities. Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) is a procyanidin‐rich food with putative anti‐inflammatory effects; however, the mechanism of action remains to be fully elucidated. The objective of the present study is to determine the effects of cocoa procyanidins (CPs) with varying degree of polymerization (DP) on inflammatory markers related to eicosanoid metabolism and cytokine production using purified enzymes and cultured RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. CPs with DP ≥7 dose‐dependently inhibited purified phospholipase A2 (IC50 =3.2 μg/mL) and cyclooxygenase‐2 (IC50= 57.7 μg/mL) in vitro, and significantly decreased prostaglandin E2 production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐stimulated macrophages. Pre‐treatment of macrophages with CP octamer (50 μM) significantly suppressed secretion of the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor‐α (70%), interleukin‐6 (100%), monocyte chemoattractant protein‐1 (50%) compared to LPS‐stimulated controls. These results demonstrate the anti‐inflammatory effects of CPs and provide potential mechanistic biomarkers to be further tested in obese subjects under inflammatory conditions. Proteomic biomarkers in plasma that differentiate rapid and slow decline in lung function in adult cigarette smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and cigarette smoking is a primary determinant of the disease. COPD is characterized by chronic airflow limitation as measured by the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV(1)). In this study, the plasma proteomes of 38 middle-aged or older adult smokers with mild to moderate COPD, with FEV(1) decline characterized as either rapid (RPD, n = 20) or slow or absent (SLW, n = 18), were interrogated using a comprehensive high-throughput proteomic approach, the accurate mass and time (AMT) tag technology. This technology is based upon a putative mass and time tag database (PMT), high-resolution LC separations and high mass accuracy measurements using FT-ICR MS with a 9.4-T magnetic field. The peptide and protein data were analyzed using three statistical approaches to address ambiguities related to the high proportion of missing data inherent to proteomic analysis. The RPD and SLW groups were differentiated by 55 peptides which mapped to 33 unique proteins. Twelve of the proteins have known roles in the complement or coagulation cascade and, despite an inability to adjust for some factors known to affect lung function decline, suggest potential mechanistic biomarkers associated with the rate of lung function decline in COPD. Whether these proteins are the cause or result of accelerated decline will require further research.
