Recent Advances in Biomedical Nanotechnology Related to Natural Products.

Natural product processing via nanotechnology has opened the door to innovative and significant applications in medical fields. On one hand, plants-derived bioactive ingredients such as phenols, pentacyclic triterpenes and flavonoids exhibit significant pharmacological activities, on another hand, most of them are hydrophobic in nature, posing challenges to their use. To overcome this issue, nanoencapsulation technology is employed to encapsulate these lipophilic compounds and enhance their bioavailability. In this regard, various nano-sized vehicles, including degradable functional polymer organic compounds, mesoporous silicon or carbon materials, offer superior stability and retention for bioactive ingredients against decomposition and loss during delivery as well as sustained release. On the other hand, some naturally occurring polymers, lipids and even microorganisms, which constitute a significant portion of Earth's biomass, show promising potential for biomedical applications as well. Through nano-processing, these natural products can be developed into nano-delivery systems with desirable characteristics for encapsulation a wide range of bioactive components and therapeutic agents, facilitating in vivo drug transport. Beyond the presentation of the most recent nanoencapsulation and nano-processing advancements with formulations mainly based on natural products, this review emphasizes the importance of their physicochemical properties at the nanoscale and their potential in disease therapy.

Introduction of Hybrid Additive Manufacturing for Producing Multi-Material Artificial Organs for Education and In Vitro Testing

The evolution of 3D printing has ushered in accessibility and cost-effectiveness, spanning various industries including biomedical engineering, education, and microfluidics. In biomedical engineering, it encompasses bioprinting tissues, producing prosthetics, porous metal orthopedic implants, and facilitating educational models. Hybrid Additive Manufacturing approaches and, more specifically, the integration of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) with bio-inkjet printing offers the advantages of improved accuracy, structural support, and controlled geometry, yet challenges persist in cell survival, interaction, and nutrient delivery within printed structures. The goal of this study was to develop and present a low-cost way to produce physical phantoms of human organs that could be used for research and training, bridging the gap between the use of highly detailed computational phantoms and real-life clinical applications. To this purpose, this study utilized anonymized clinical Computed Tomography (CT) data to create a liver physical model using the Creality Ender-3 printer. Polylactic Acid (PLA), Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA), and light-bodied silicone (Polysiloxane) materials were employed for printing the liver including its veins and arteries. In brief, PLA was used to create a mold of a liver to be filled with biocompatible light-bodied silicone. Molds of the veins and arteries were printed using PVA and then inserted in the liver model to create empty channel. In addition, the PVA was then washed out by the final product using warm water. Despite minor imperfections due to the printer’s limitations, the final product imitates the computational model accurately enough. Precision adjustments in the design phase compensated for this variation. The proposed novel low-cost 3D printing methodology successfully produced an anatomically accurate liver physical model, presenting promising applications in medical education, research, and surgical planning. Notably, its implications extend to medical training, personalized medicine, and organ transplantation. The technology’s potential includes injection training for medical professionals, personalized anthropomorphic phantoms for radiation therapy, and the future prospect of creating functional living organs for organ transplantation, albeit requiring significant interdisciplinary collaboration and financial investment. This technique, while showcasing immense potential in biomedical applications, requires further advancements and interdisciplinary cooperation for its optimal utilization in revolutionizing medical science and benefiting patient healthcare.

Wetting behavior of stainless-steel surface with zinc oxide nanorod coatings: modulations in nanorod alignment through atomic layer deposition.

This study investigated the hydrophobic-hydrophilic characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod coatings for potential biomedical applications. We examined the effects of different alignments of ZnO nanorods on the wetting and mechanical characteristics of the coatings.
ZnO seed layers were prepared on stainless-steel plates using atomic layer deposition (ALD) at five different temperatures ranging from 50 to 250 ℃. The ZnO nanorod coatings were then deposited on these seed layers through chemical bath deposition. The polycrystalline structure of the seed layers and the morphology of the nanorods were analyzed using grazing incidence angle X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical and wetting properties of the nanorod coatings were examined using nanoindentation and water-droplet tests. The seed layers produced at 50 and 250 ℃ showed stronger (0 0 2) peaks than the other layers. ZnO nanorods on these seed layers exhibited greater vertical orientation and lower water contact angles indicating a more hydrophilic surface. Additionally, vertically oriented nanorod coatings demonstrated greater elastic modulus and hardness than those of oblique nanorods. Our findings indicate that ALD technology can be used to control the spatial arrangement of ZnO nanorods and optimize the hydrophobic-hydrophilic and mechanical properties of coating surfaces.&#xD.

ELECTRO-OSMOTIC EFFECT ON PERISTALTIC FLOW OF PHAN–THIEN–TANNER FLUID IN A PLANAR CHANNEL

Abstract There are several factors that can cause the excessive accumulation of biofluid in human tissue, such as pregnancy, local traumas, allergic responses or the use of certain therapeutic medications. This study aims to further investigate the shear-dependent peristaltic flow of Phan–Thien–Tanner (PTT) fluid within a planar channel by incorporating the phenomenon of electro-osmosis. This research is driven by the potential biomedical applications of this knowledge. The non-Newtonian fluid features of the PTT fluid model are considered as physiological fluid in a symmetric planar channel. This study is significant, as it demonstrates that the chyme in the small intestine can be modelled as a PTT fluid. The governing equations for the flow of the ionic liquid, thermal radiation and heat transfer, along with the Poisson–Boltzmann equation within the electrical double layer, are discussed. The long-wavelength ( $\delta \ll 1$ ) and low-Reynolds-number approximations ( $Re \to 0$ ) are used to simplify the simultaneous equations. The solutions analyse the Debye electronic length parameter, Helmholtz–Smoluchowski velocity, Prandtl number and thermal radiation. Additionally, streamlines are used to examine the phenomenon of entrapment. Graphs are used to explain the influence of different parameters on the flow and temperature. The findings of the current model have practical implications in the design of microfluidic devices for different particle transport phenomena at the micro level. Additionally, the noteworthy results highlight the advantages of electro-osmosis in controlling both flow and heat transfer. Ultimately, our objective is to use these findings as a guide for the advancement of lab-on-a-chip systems.

Injectable pH- and ultrasound-responsive dual-crosslinked dextran/chitosan/TiO2 nanocomposite hydrogels for antibacterial applications.

Combining exogenous and endogenous antibacterial mechanisms has been demonstrated to enhance therapeutic efficacy significantly. This study constructs an innovative type of exogenous and endogenous antibacterial nanocomposite hydrogels with injectable dual-crosslinked networks and dual-stimuli responsiveness. The primary network establishes imine bonds between the functionalized dextran featuring norbornenes and aldehydes (NorAld-Dex) and the quaternized chitosan (QCS). The imine bonds provide self-healing, injectability, and pH-responsiveness to the hydrogel network. The secondary network is established by integrating thiolated mesoporous silica-coated titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2@MS-SH) into the hydrogel network via an ultrasound-activated thiol-norbornene reaction with NorAld-Dex. The microstructures and properties of NorAld-Dex/QCS/TiO2@MS-SH hydrogels can be fine-tuned by adjusting the sonication time to increase the amount of thiol-norbornene crosslinks in the network. Effective antibacterial performance of NorAld-Dex/QCS/TiO2@MS-SH hydrogels at low pH has been demonstrated with the synergistic effect of the acid-induced dissociation of the hydrogel network, protonated QCS, and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by TiO2@MS-SH nanoparticles under ultrasound irradiation. In summary, NorAld-Dex/QCS/TiO2@MS-SH hydrogel is an advanced dual stimuli-responsive antibacterial platform with customizable microstructures and properties, offering great potential for biomedical applications.

Label-free active single-cell encapsulation enabled by microvalve-based on-demand droplet generation and real-time image processing

Droplet microfluidics-based single-cell encapsulation is a critical technology that enables large-scale parallel single-cell analysis by capturing and processing thousands of individual cells. As the efficiency of passive single-cell encapsulation is limited by Poisson distribution, active single-cell encapsulation has been developed to theoretically ensure that each droplet contains one cell. However, existing active single-cell encapsulation technologies still face issues related to fluorescence labeling and low throughput. Here, we present an active single-cell encapsulation technique by using microvalve-based drop-on-demand technology and real-time image processing to encapsulate single cells with high throughput in a label-free manner. Our experiments demonstrated that the single-cell encapsulation system can encapsulate individual polystyrene beads with 96.3% efficiency and HeLa cells with 94.9% efficiency. The flow speed of cells in this system can reach 150 mm/s, resulting in a corresponding theoretical encapsulation throughput of 150 Hz. This technology has significant potential in various biomedical applications, including single-cell omics, secretion detection, and drug screening.

Plant-mediated synthesis of Mn3O4 nanoparticles: challenges and applications.

This review focuses on the green synthesis methods, challenges, and applications of manganese oxide (Mn3O4) nanoparticles investigated in the past five years. Mn3O4 nanoparticles offer some unique properties that are attributed in part to the presence of mixed oxidation states of manganese (i.e., +2 and +3) in the particle, which can be utilized in a wide range of redox-sensitive applications, such as in developing supercapacitive energy storage materials. In addition, the green synthesis of Mn3O4 nanoparticles through plant extracts has potential uses in sustainable nanotechnology. Various plant extract-mediated synthesis techniques for Mn3O4 nanoparticles have been investigated and presented. By comparing the size and structure of the synthesized Mn3O4 nanoparticles, we have observed a consistent pattern of obtaining spherical particles with a size ranging from 16 to 50 nm. The morphology of the generated Mn3O4 nanoparticles can be influenced by the annealing temperature and the composition of the plant extract used during the nanoparticle synthesis. Additionally, numerous applications for the greenly produced Mn3O4 nanoparticles have been demonstrated. Mn3O4 nanoparticles derived from plant extracts have been found to possess antimicrobial properties, supercapacitive and electrochemical capabilities, and excellent pollutant degradation efficiency. However, the magnetic properties of these nanoparticles synthesized by plant extracts are yet to be explored for potential biomedical applications. Finally, challenges to existing synthetic methods and future perspectives on the potential applications of these green synthesized Mn3O4 nanoparticles are highlighted.

Multiphoton Lithography of Interpenetrating Polymer Networks for Tailored Microstructure Thermal and Micromechanical Properties.

Multiphoton lithography (MPL), an emerging truly 3D microfabrication technique, exhibits substantial potential in biomedical applications, including drug delivery and tissue engineering. Fabricated micro-objects are often expected to undergo shape morphing or bending of the entire structure or its parts. Furthermore, ensuring precise property tuning is detrimental to the realization of the functionality of MPL microstructures. Herein, novel MPL materials based on interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) are presented that effectively combine the advantages of acrylate and epoxy systems. IPNs with varying component ratios are investigated for their microfabrication performance and structural integrity with respect to thermal and micromechanical properties. A variety of high-resolution techniques is applied to comprehensively evaluate IPN properties at the bulk, micron, and segmental levels. This study shows that the MPL laser scanning velocity and power, photoinitiator content, and multi-step exposure can be used to tune the morphology and properties of the IPN. As a result, a library of 3D MPL IPN microstructures with high 3D structural stability and tailored thermal and micromechanical properties is achieved. New IPN microstructures with Young's moduli of 3-4MPa demonstrate high-to-fully elastic responses to deformations, making them promising for applications in morphable microsystems, soft micro-robotics, and cell engineering.

Bacteria inhabiting spider webs enhance host silk extensibility

Spider silk is a promising material with great potential in biomedical applications due to its incredible mechanical properties and resistance to degradation of commercially available bacterial strains. However, little is known about the bacterial communities that may inhabit spider webs and how these microorganisms interact with spider silk. In this study, we exposed two exopolysaccharide-secreting bacteria, isolated from webs of an orb spider, to major ampullate (MA) silk from host spiders. The naturally occurring lipid and glycoprotein surface layers of MA silk were experimentally removed to further probe the interaction between bacteria and silk. Extensibility of major ampullate silk produced by Triconephila clavata that was exposed to either Microbacterium sp. or Novosphigobium sp. was significantly higher than that of silk that was not exposed to bacteria (differed by 58.7%). This strain-enhancing effect was not observed when the lipid and glycoprotein surface layers of MA silks were removed. The presence of exopolysaccharides was detected through NMR from MA silks exposed to these two bacteria but not from those without exposure. Here we report for the first time that exopolysaccharide-secreting bacteria inhabiting spider webs can enhance extensibility of host MA silks and silk surface layers play a vital role in mediating such effects.

Development of New Polyimide/Spirulina Hybrid Materials: Preparation and Characterization

This study presents the synthesis and characterization of polyimide (PI-2) films incorporated with spirulina powder for potential biomedical applications. The synthesis of PI-2 was achieved through a two-step polycondensation reaction using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as the solvent. The incorporation of spirulina was systematically varied to investigate its effects on the structural and surface properties of the hybrid materials. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a tightly bound interface between spirulina and the PI-2 matrix, indicating effective dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion. Profilometry and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the homogeneous integration of spirulina within the polymer matrix, with resulting variations in surface roughness and chemistry. Contact angle measurements demonstrated altered wettability characteristics, with increased hydrophilicity observed with spirulina incorporation. Furthermore, blood component interaction studies indicated the variations in adhesion behavior observed for red blood cells, platelets, and plasma proteins. Water uptake studies revealed enhanced absorption capacity in PI-2 films loaded with spirulina, highlighting their potential suitability for applications requiring controlled hydration. Overall, this comprehensive characterization elucidates the potential of PI-2/spirulina hybrid materials for diverse biomedical applications, offering tunable properties that can be tailored to specific requirements.

Preparation and characterization of various PVPylated divalent metal-doped ferrite nanoparticles for magnetic hyperthermia.

There is an incessant demand to keep improving on the heating responses of polymeric magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) under magnetic excitation, particularly in the pursuit for them to be utilized for clinical hyperthermia applications. Herein, we report the fabrication of a panel of PVP-capped divalent metal-doped MFe2O4 (M ≅ Co, Ni, Zn, Mg, and Sn) MNPs prepared via the Ko-precipitation Hydrolytic Basic (KHB) methodology and assess their magneto-thermal abilities. The physiochemical, structural, morphological, compositional, and magnetic properties of the doped ferrites were fully characterized using various techniques mainly TEM, XRD, EDX, FTIR, and VSM. The obtained doped MNPs exhibited stabilized quasi-spherical sized particles (10-17 nm), pure well-crystallized cubic spinel phases, and high saturation magnetizations (Ms = 26-81 emu g-1). In response to a clinically-safe alternating magnetic field (AMF) (f = 332.8 kHz and H = 170 Oe), distinctive heating responses of these doped ferrites were attained. Hyperthermia temperatures of 42 °C can be reached very fast in only ∼5 min, with heating temperatures slowly increasing to reach up to 55 °C. The highest heating performance was observed for PVP-NiFe2O4 and the lowest for PVP-Sn-doped NPs (SAR values: PVP-NiFe2O4 > PVP-CoFe2O4 > PVP-ZnFe2O4 > PVP-MgFe2O4 > PVP-SnFe2O4). This trend was found to be directly correlated to their observed magnetic saturation and anisotropy. Heating efficiencies and specific SAR values as functions of concentration, frequency, and amplitude were also systematically investigated. Finally, cytotoxicity assay was conducted on aqueous dispersions of the doped ferrite NPs, proving their biocompatibility and safety profiles. The PVPylated metal-doped ferrite NPs prepared here, particularly Ni- and Co-doped ferrites, are promising vehicles for potential combined magnetically-triggered biomedical hyperthermia applications.

Electron Beam-Supported Fabrication of Biocompatible Silver/iota-Carrageenan for Wound Healing Application.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a potent antibacterial agent, especially when used to treat bacteria that are multidrug resistant. However, it is challenging to eliminate the hazardous reducing agents that remain in AgNPs produced by the conventional chemical reduction process. To overcome these challenges, the presented research demonstrates the fabrication of AgNPs using iota-carrageenan (ι-carra) as a carbohydrate polymer using electron beam (EB) irradiation. Well-characterized ι-carra@AgNPs have a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with spherical morphology and an average size of 26 nm. Herein we explored the approach for fabricating ι-carra@AgNPs that is suitable for scaling up the production of nanoparticles that exhibit excellent water stability. Further, the optimized ι-carra@AgNPs exhibited considerable antibacterial activity of 40% and 30% inhibition when tested with Gram-negative Escherichia coli ATCC 43895 and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (ATCC 6538), respectively, and low cytotoxicity at 10-50 μg/mL. To establish the potential biomedical application, as proof of the concept, the ι-carra@AgNPs showed significant antibiofilm activity at 20 μg/mL and also showed 95% wound healing abilities at 50 μg/mL compared to the nontreated control groups. Electron beam assisted ι-carra@AgNPs showed significant beneficial effects against specific bacterial strains and may provide a guide for the development of new antibacterial materials for wound dressing for large-scale production for biomedical applications.

Quantum dots and their potential biomedical applications

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor-based nanocrystals. These nanoparticles have exhibited their unique optical and electronic properties. With these characteristics, QDs attracted scientists interest in biomedical areas such as bioimaging, drug delivery and biosensors apart from other applications like photocatalysis, light-emitting, and solar cells in recent years, and plenty of QDs and QD-based materials have exhibited their unique properties in their applications of biomedical areas. Nevertheless, the potential toxicity of QDs becomes the limitation of QDs application in biomedical areas. The toxicity of QDs might come from: the toxicity core material of QDs; the toxicity substances from the surface of QDs; the free radicals or reactive species released from QDs; the biological environment induced QDs toxicity. In this article, we review the properties of QDs, the applications of QDs in different biomedical fields, how QDs cause toxicity, and how to reduce or prevent QDs potential toxicity. In the future, we expect the improvement and further application of QDs in biomedical areas.

Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of selenium nanoparticles-antibiotic conjugates against anti-multidrug-resistant bacteria

The crucial demand to overcome the issue of multidrug resistance is required to refine the performance of antibiotics. Such a process can be achieved by fastening them to compatible nanoparticles to obtain effective pharmaceuticals at a low concentration. Thus, selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) are considered biocompatible agents that are applied to prevent infections resulting from bacterial resistance to multi-antibiotics. The current evaluated the effectiveness of Se NPs and their conjugates with antibiotics such as amikacin (AK), levofloxacin (LEV), and piperacillin (PIP) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). In addition, the study determined the antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of Se NPs and their conjugates with LEV against urinary tract pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), P. aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The result of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) for eight isolates of P. aeruginosa revealed that the conjugation of Se NPs with AK, LEV, and PIP resulted in a reduction in the concentration of antibiotic-conjugated Se NPs. The concentration was found to be about 10–20 times lower than that of bare antibiotics. The MIC of the Se NPs with LEV (i.e., Se NPs:LEV) for S. aureus, E. faecalis, P. aeruginosa, and E. coli was found to be 1.4:0.5, 0.7:0.25, 22:8, and 11:4 µg/mL, respectively. The results of the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) demonstrated that Se NPs:LEV conjugate have inhibited 50 % of the mature biofilms of S. aureus, E. faecalis, P. aeruginosa, and E. coli at a concentration of 27.5 ± 10.5, 18.8 ± 3.1, 40.6 ± 10.7, and 21.6 ± 3.3 µg/mL, respectively compared to the control. It has been suggested that the antibiotic-conjugated Se NPs have great potential for biomedical applications. The conjugation of Se NPs with AK, LEV, and PIP increases the antibacterial potency against resistant pathogens at a low concentration.

Novel green synthesis of Value-Added graphene quantum dots from bagasse and pith for biological applications

The continuing rush for potential biomedical applications has sparked the fabrication of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) particularly from agricultural waste. GQDs are unique among carbon-based nanomaterials due to their flexibility, chemical stability, size control, and non-toxic nature. In this study, we have developed Graphene Quantum dots from sugarcane bagasse (GQDs-SB) and sugarcane bagasse pith (GQDs-SBP) by carbonization followed by microwave pyrolysis. The optical properties of the synthesized GQDs-SB and GQDs-SBP were characterized by Ultraviolet–Visible spectroscopy and Photoluminescence (PL) analysis and the surface functional groups were determined by FT- IR analysis. The High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) was used to examine dimensions and structure of GQDs-SB and GQDs-SBP. The storage stability of GQDs-SB and GQDs-SBP was monitored using Ultraviolet–Visible spectroscopy. The synthesized GQDs-SB and GQDs-SBP were evaluated for biological applications like anti-oxidant activity, anti inflammatory activity and cytotoxic effect was also assessed. GQDs-SB and GQDs-SBP demonstrated significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects due to their great ability to scavenge free radicals and extraordinary water solubility. The synthesized GQDs-SB and GQDs-SBP were less toxic in nature.

Agar-tragacanth/silk fibroin hydrogel containing Zn-based MOF as a novel nanobiocomposite with biological activity

In this study, a novel nanobiocomposite consisting of agar (Ag), tragacanth gum (TG), silk fibroin (SF), and MOF-5 was synthesized and extensively investigated by various analytical techniques and basic biological assays for potential biomedical applications. The performed Trypan blue dye exclusion assay indicated that the proliferation percentage of HEK293T cells was 71.19%, while the proliferation of cancer cells (K-562 and MCF-7) was significantly lower, at 10.74% and 3.33%. Furthermore, the Ag-TG hydrogel/SF/MOF-5 nanobiocomposite exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus strains, with growth inhibition rates of 76.08% and 69.19% respectively. Additionally, the hemolytic index of fabricated nanobiocomposite was found approximately 19%. These findings suggest that the nanobiocomposite exhibits significant potential for application in cancer therapy and wound healing.

Functionalized DNA Origami-Enabled Detection of Biomarkers.

Biomarkers are crucial physiological and pathological indicators in the host. Over the years, numerous detection methods have been developed for biomarkers, given their significant potential in various biological and biomedical applications. Among these, the detection system based on functionalized DNA origami has emerged as a promising approach due to its precise control over sensing modules, enabling sensitive, specific, and programmable biomarker detection. We summarize the advancements in biomarker detection using functionalized DNA origami, focusing on strategies for DNA origami functionalization, mechanisms of biomarker recognition, and applications in disease diagnosis and monitoring. These applications are organized into sections based on the type of biomarkers-nucleic acids, proteins, small molecules, and ions-and concludes with a discussion on the advantages and challenges associated with using functionalized DNA origami systems for biomarker detection.

Hemocompatibility and Preangiogenic Attributes of SiBxCyNzOm Coatings for Biomedical Applications.

In current clinical practices related to orthopedics, dental, and cardiovascular surgeries, a number of biomaterial coatings, such as hydroxyapatite (HAp), diamond-like carbon (DLC), have been used in combination with metallic substrates (stainless steel, Ti6Al4V alloy, etc.). Although SiBCN coatings are widely explored in material science for diverse applications, their potential remains largely unexplored for biomedical applications. With this motivation, the present work reports the development of SiBxCyNzOm coatings on a Ti6Al4V substrate, employing a reactive radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering technique. Three different coating compositions (Si0.27B0.10C0.31N0.07O0.24, Si0.23B0.06C0.21N0.22O0.27, and Si0.20B0.05C0.19N0.20O0.35) were obtained using a Si2BC2N target and varying nitrogen flow rates. The hydrophilic properties of the as-synthesized coatings were rationalized in terms of an increase in the number of oxygen-containing functional groups (OH and NO) on the surface, as probed using XPS and FTIR analyses. Furthermore, the cellular monoculture of SVEC4-10 endothelial cells and L929 fibroblasts established good cytocompatibility. More importantly, the coculture system of SVEC4-10 and L929, in the absence of growth factors, demonstrated clear cellular phenotypical changes, with extensive sprouting leading to tube-like morphologies on the coating surfaces, when stimulated using a customized cell stimulator (StimuCell) with 1.15 V/cm direct current (DC) electric field strength for 1 h. In addition, the hemocompatibility assessment using human blood samples revealed clinically acceptable hemolysis, less erythrocyte adhesion, shorter plasma recalcification, and reduced risk for thrombosis on the SiBxCyNzOm coatings, when compared to uncoated Ti6Al4V. Taken together, the present study unambiguously establishes excellent cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and defines the preangiogenic properties of SiBxCyNzOm bioceramic coatings for potential biomedical applications.

Effect of Keratin Waste on Poly(ε-Caprolactone) Films: Structural Characterization, Thermal Properties, and Keratinocytes Viability and Proliferation Studies

Keratin extracted (KE) from chicken feathers was used for the production of composite films comprising poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and keratin (PCL/KE films). The process involved the extraction of keratin from chicken feathers using a 0.1 M NaOH solution, followed by characterization via sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The PCL was synthesized through the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ԑ-CL) with Sn(Oct)2 as a catalyst. Films were prepared via solvent casting, including pure PCL films and those enriched with different weight percentages of KE (10%, 15%, 25%, and 30%). The films were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM analysis revealed a more uniform incorporation of KE within the PCL matrix in the case of the 15% keratin-enriched film (PCL/KE15) as compared to other keratin percentages. The thermal analysis showed a positive influence of keratin on the thermal stability of the films. Keratinocytes viability and proliferation tests on the PCL/KE15 film demonstrated compatibility with cells. Collectively, these results hold relevance for potential biomedical applications of PCL/KE films.

Biodegradable chitin nanofiber-alginate dialdehyde hydrogel: An injectable, self-healing scaffold for anti-tumor drug delivery

Injectable hydrogels fabricated from natural polymers have attracted increasing attentions for their potential in biomedical application owing to the biocompatibility and biodegradability. A new class of natural polymer based self-healing hydrogel is constructed through dynamic covalent bonds. The injectable self-healing hydrogels are fabricated by introducing alginate aldehyde to form Schiff base bonds with the chitin nanofibers. These hydrogels demonstrate excellent self-healing properties, injectability, and pH-responsive sol-gel transition behaviors. As a result, they can serve as carriers to allow an effective encapsulation of doxorubicin (DOX) for drug delivery. Furthermore, these hydrogels exhibit excellent biocompatibility and degradability in vitro and in vivo. The sustained release of DOX from the hydrogels effectively suppresses tumor growth in animal models without causing significant systemic toxicity, suggesting their potential application in anti-tumor therapies.
