Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a common metabolic disorder throughout the world affecting the people of both developed and developing countries. Diabetes mellitus is caused by the abnormality of carbohydrate metabolism which is linked to low blood insulin level or insensitivity of target organs to insulin. It leads to hyperglycemic condition. Several herbs have been known to cure and control diabetes without causing any side effects. In India indigenous medicines have been used in the treatment of DM since the time of Charaka and Sushruta (6th century BC). The aim of this review is to mention plants widely used as antidiabetic. Ease of availability, least side effects and low cost make the herbal preparations are the main key player of all available therapies, especially in rural areas. Since centuries, many plants are considered a fundamental source of potent anti-diabetic drugs However, only a few have been subjected to detailed scientific investigation. In general, there is very little biological knowledge on the specific modes of action in the treatment of diabetes, but most of the plants have been found to contain substances like glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids etc. that are frequently implicated as having antidiabetic effects The main purpose of this study is to document the anti-diabetic plants. The present review is an attempt to list the plants having anti-diabetic and hypoglycemic activity mentioned/used in the Indian traditional system of medicine and have shown experimental or clinical anti-diabetic activity. A total of 176 plants belonging to 71 families were described in the review. The plants have been tabulated with botanical and local name, family and activity.
