Influence of Potassium Permanganate Oxidation on Structure and Properties of Cotton

ABSTRACT Cotton yarn was oxidized using the various concentrations and pH of potassium permanganate solutions, in order to investigate the influence of oxidation parameters on chemical, mechanical and sorption properties of cotton. The oxidation progress was monitored through weight loss, carbonyl and carboxyl group content, tensile strength, moisture sorption, crystallinity change, surface charge and morphology of modified samples. The carboxyl groups were introduced into the oxidized cotton up to 0.3 mmol·g−1, while the weight loss was up to 5%. The oxidized samples, compared with untreated cotton, exhibited lower tensile strength, higher moisture sorption and surface roughness. Surface charge was evaluated through measurement of zeta potential at different pH of electrolyte, and the correlation was established between carboxyl group content and zeta values measured at neutral pH, which proved that zeta potential can be a valuable tool for characterizing changes in the structure of oxidized cellulose textile materials.

An Improved Ion Chromatographic Method for Fast and Sensitive Determination of Hexavalent Chromium and Total Chromium Using Conductivity Detection.

Chromium exists in its two stable oxidation states including trivalent chromium (Cr (III)) and hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) in natural waters. Chromium is an essential micronutrient in the trivalent form; however, the hexavalent form of chromium is considered to be a carcinogen. It is important to determine the chromium content along with speciation. There are a number of methods available for chromium determination. Speciation of chromium is essential to know the exact composition of chromium. Ion exchange chromatography is one of the techniques used to determine Cr (VI). The proposed method can be used to perform the speciation of Cr (III) and Cr (VI). It is a two-step process: first Cr (VI) is determined, followed by total chromium determination by treating the sample with potassium permanganate solution to oxidize the Cr (III) present in the sample to Cr (VI) and determining it as Cr (VI). Conductivity detector is used for the detection. Addition of potassium permanganate solution to the ground water samples for oxidizing the Cr (III) to Cr (VI) is the newly adopted sample preparation technique. The effect of potassium permanganate oxidation is studied in detail in the proposed method. This method can be used for chromium speciation in river water and ground water samples.

Magnetite nanoparticles modified β-cyclodextrin PolymerCoupled with KMnO4 oxidation for adsorption and degradation of acetaminophen

Here, a porous superparamagnetic composite material magnetic β-cyclodextrin polymer (MNPs/β-CDP) was prepared and characterized as a adsorbent that may be used for the degradaion of acetaminophen (APAP) in aqueous solution by coupling with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) oxidation. The results of adsorption properties investigation showed that the adsorption rate and capacity of MNPs/β-CDP were better than the component materials. When coupled with KMnO4 oxidation, the degradation efficiency were evaluated with regards to the pseudo-first-order kinetics of 4-CP degradation. As an oxidation reactor, the material effectively alleviated the secondary pollution and water coloration caused by oxidation of KMnO4. Moreover, the materials were directly regenerated by the reaction of KMnO4 with APAP adsorbed in its cavities without additional elution treatment, making it more convenient and environmentally friendly. The repeated degradation experiments demonstrated that MNPs/β-CDP had mechanic stability and reusability. The findings provide novel ideas for the degradation of persistent contaminants in water environments.

A high throughput method for total alcohol determination in fermentation broths

BackgroundThe potassium dichromate oxidation method used in determination of alcohols in fermentation has two major disadvantages. This method cannot be used to determine alcohols in raw fermentation broth samples, which often contain various reducing sugars. The method is not environment friendly due to the carcinogenicity of Cr (VI) used.ResultsA new method for determination of reducing sugars and total alcohols in raw fermentation broths was developed. The fermentation broth was pretreated to remove proteins, polysaccharides, glycerol and organic acids. The colorimetric change from both total alcohols and reducing sugars by potassium permanganate oxidation was measured. The portion of colorimetric change from oxidation of reducing sugars was determined by DNS test and subtracted. The remaining portion of colorimetric change was then used to calculate the total alcohol concentration in the sample.ConclusionsUsing this method, total alcohol concentration can be easily and accurately determined in both distilled samples and raw fermentation broth samples. It is fast and environmental friendly.

Iron and NOM interactions in GAC groundwater treatment

Abstract This research work investigates the iron chromatographic displacement from the granular activated carbon (GAC) columns that occurred in the Vars, Ontario groundwater treatment plant. Natural organic matter (NOM) (XAD-8) fractionation showed that 30% of NOM was hydrophobic with the capability of forming complexes with iron. CHELEX-100 isolation indicated that 37–40% of the iron was organically-bound. The quantification of complexed iron performed on GAC microcolumn effluent at iron exhaustion point showed that this iron was neither adsorbed nor split from NOM. This indicates that NOM–iron complexes were not the cause of the observed chromatographic displacement of iron and suggests that competitive adsorption between iron and NOM forced the previously adsorbed iron to be desorbed. Adding greensand treatment prior to the GAC columns resulted in full iron removal, which suggests that NOM–iron complexes must have been either broken by potassium permanganate oxidation and/or adsorbed by the greensand filter.

Manganese dioxide nanoparticles mitigate oxidative stress in osteoarthritic cartilage

Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with chronic joint inflammation, whereby pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β upregulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) production while downregulating anti-oxidants in cells. The resulting oxidative stress leads to extracellular matrix degradation, joint inflammation, and chondrocyte death and senescence. The role of oxidative stress in OA etiology makes it a therapeutic target to ameliorate some of the devastating symptoms of the disease. The overall goal of this research is to develop a bioactive nanoparticle (NP) system that scavenges ROS in cartilage to modulate the impact of joint inflammation. Manganese dioxide (MnO2) catalyzes the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and is currently being evaluated for scavenging ROS in inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis. We hypothesize that MnO2 NPs will protect cartilage from inflammation-induced oxidative stress. To do this, we have engineered chondroprotective MnO2 NPs with properties that enable them to penetrate into the cartilage. Methods: MnO2 NPs were synthesized by the oxidation of potassium permanganate with polyallyamine hydrochloride and further stabilized with polyethylene glycol (PEG). The NPs were characterized for size and zeta potential in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and polydispersity by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Scavenging capacity of MnO2 NPs was evaluated by a H2O2 colorimetric detection kit. Uptake of Alexa Fluor 488 conjugated NPs by bovine chondrocytes in 2-D culture and cartilage explants were evaluated by fluorescent imaging after 24 hours of incubation. The cytotoxicity of NPs to chondrocytes was tested using the MTS colorimetric assay. Fresh bovine cartilage biopsies were challenged with human recombinant IL-1β, to mimic OA-like cartilage, in the presence of MnO2 NPs and evaluated for loss of glycosaminoglycans (GAG), a key component of cartilage extracellular matrix, and production of nitric oxide (NO), a key reactive nitrogen species (RNS) related to oxidative stress in OA, over a 9-day period. The loss of GAG was quantified using spectrophotometric Dimethylmethylene Blue Assay while NO concentrations were evaluated by the Griess reaction. Articular joint retention of Alexa Fluor 750 conjugated NPs in rats was monitored using an in vivo IVIS Imaging System. Results: The PEG stabilized MnO2 NPs had a hydrodynamic size of 15 nm (number weighted) and TEM size of 8 nm. The NPs had neutral charge. The NPs effectively scavenged H2O2, with 5ug/mL MnO2 NPs neutralizing 55% of 100uM H2O2. Chondrocytes in monolayer showed uptake of MnO2 NPs, which escaped the endosomes and localized perinuclearly without cytotoxicity (Fig. 1). The MnO2 NPs penetrated through the depth of the cartilage biopsies and remained in the tissue matrix. Interestingly, the NPs were also endocytosed by resident chondrocytes (Fig. 2). In cytokine challenged cartilage explants, supplementation with MnO2 NPs decreased NO production by 80% and reduced GAG loss by 55% compared to controls (Fig. 3A and B). The MnO2 NPs after in vivo injection in articular joints displayed a linear decline (R2 = 0.933) in retention with time. Quantification of fluorescent signals showed that 78% of the initial amount of NPs remained in joints after 5 days (Fig. 4A and B). Conclusions: MnO2 NPs have the potential to reduce oxidative stress in osteoarthritic cartilage. Given their joint retention time and ROS scavenging capacity, these NPs could target oxidative stress to treat or prevent OA. As the NPs show intracellular localization in chondrocytes, they could also deliver other chondroprotective agents including nucleic acids to target multiple pathways in the OA pathology. Characteristics of activated carbon modified with alkaline KMnO4 and its performance in catalytic reforming of greenhouse gases CO2/CH4

Different potassium permanganate oxidation processes were used to modify activated carbon, and then surface structure and chemical properties of modified activated carbon with different preparation methods as well as their influences on carbon dioxide reforming of methane were studied. BET and SEM surface structure analysis indicated that after modification with potassium permanganate under alkaline condition, specific surface area of activated carbon increased, microspore and mesoporous capacities enlarged, but the pore diameter of activated carbon slightly reduced. XPS and FT-IR characterization indicated that after modification with potassium permanganate under alkaline condition, acid oxygen-containing functional groups dropped and new alkaline active substances like ionic OH− and manganite were generated on the activated carbon surface. Increased specific surface area and pore capacity of activated carbon, reduced acid oxygen-containing groups and generated alkaline active substances like ionic OH− and manganite exerted significant influences on methane activation and carbon dioxide reforming of methane. Under alkaline condition, the activity of the potassium permanganate modified activated carbon and reforming conversion slightly increased because of interaction between alkaline functional groups and acid carbon dioxide; In the meantime, newly generated ionic OH− on the surface and manganite participated in reforming reaction, which also improved activity of potassium permanganate-modified activated carbon for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. Under acid condition, CO2-CH4 reforming conversion and catalyst activity decreased because of interaction between acidic functional groups and acid carbon dioxide.

Properties of cotton yarns after oxidation of potassium permanganate in an acidic environment

The impact of nonselective cellulose oxidation (cotton fibre) by potassium permanganate in acidic environment, with or without additional treatment by sodium metabisulfite, on change of sorption (silver ions sorption), and deposition of manganese (IV) oxide were aims of this work. The standard methods and methods developed at Department of Textile Engineering of Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy Belgrade, were used for determination of introduced functional groups, sorption and mechanical properties of selected fibres. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry ICP-OES was used for determination of manganese(IV) oxide deposited on cotton fibres. The changes of studied properties of cotton fibres were followed as a function of concentration and pH of the solution of oxidizing agent. Results obtained in this work showed that oxidized cotton fibre with improved sorption properties is appropriate as an initial raw for a wide range of textile products of special assignment.

Effects of ultrasound coupled with potassium permanganate pre-treatment of sludge on aerobic digestion

The biodegradability and decomposition efficiencies increase with the pre-treatment of sludge in a digestion process. In this study, the feasibility of ultrasound coupled with potassium permanganate oxidation as a disintegration method and digestibility of aerobic reactor fed with disintegrated sludge with ultrasound coupled potassium permanganate were investigated. The first stage of the study focused on determining the optimum condition for ultrasonic pre-treatment for achieving better destruction efficiency of sludge. The second part of the study, the aerobic digestibility of sludge disintegrated with ultrasound and potassium permanganate oxidation alone and combined were examined comparatively. The results showed that when 20 min of ultrasonic pre-treatment applied, the specific energy output was 49384 kJ/kgTS with disintegration degree of 58.84%. During the operation of aerobic digester, VS/TS ratios of digesters fed with disintegrated sludge decreased indicating that disintegration methods could obviously enhance aerobic digestion performance. The highest reduction in volatile solids was 75% in the digester fed with ultrasound+potassium permanganate disintegrated sludge at the end of the operation compared to digester fed with raw sludge. Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Phosphorus (TP) levels in sludge supernatant increased with this combined method significantly. Besides, it promoted the production of OH, thus enhancing the release of Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) from the sludge. Disintegration with all methods used in this study could not improve Capillary Suction Time (CST) reduction in disintegrated digesters during the operation. The results demonstrated that the combined ultrasound treatment and potassium permanganate oxidation method improves the biodegradability compared to control reactor or their single application.

Evaluation of ultrasound assisted potassium permanganate pre-treatment of spent coffee waste

In the present study, novel pre-treatment for spent coffee waste (SCW) has been proposed which utilises the superior oxidising capacity of alkaline KMnO4 assisted by ultra-sonication. The pre-treatment was conducted for different exposure times (10, 20, 30 and 40min) using different concentrations of KMnO4 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5%w/v) at room temperature with solid/liquid ratio of 1:10. Pretreating SCW with 4% KMnO4 and exposing it to ultrasound for 20min resulted in 98% cellulose recovery and a maximum lignin removal of 46%. 1.7 fold increase in reducing sugar yield was obtained after enzymatic hydrolysis of KMnO4 pretreated SCW as compared to raw. SEM, XRD and FTIR analysis of the pretreated SCW revealed the various effects of pretreatment. Thermal behaviour of the pretreated substrate against the native biomass was also studied using DSC. Ultrasound-assisted potassium permanganate oxidation was found to be an effective pretreatment for SCW, and can be a used as a potential feedstock pretreatment strategy for bioethanol production.

Cyclic mismatch binding ligand CMBL4 binds to the 5'-T-3'/5'-GG-3' site by inducing the flipping out of thymine base.

A newly designed cyclic bis-naphthyridine carbamate dimer CMBL4 with a limited conformational flexibility was synthesized and characterized. Absorption spectra revealed that two naphthyridines in CMBL4 were stacked on each other in aqueous solutions. The most efficient binding of CMBL4 to DNA was observed for the sequence 5′-T-3′/5′-GG-3′ (T/GG) with the formation of a 1:1 complex, which is one of possible structural elements involved in the higher order structures of (TGG)n repeat DNA triggering the genome microdeletion. Surface plasmon resonance assay also showed the binding of CMBL4 with TGG repeat DNA. Potassium permanganate oxidation studies of CMBL4-bound duplex containing the T/GG site showed that the CMBL4-binding accelerated the oxidation of thymine at that site, which suggests the flipping out of the thymine base from a π-stack. Preferential binding was observed for CMBL4 compared with its acyclic variants, which suggests the marked significance of the macrocyclic structure for the recognition of the T/GG site.

Nanospherical-Like Manganese Monoxide/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite Synthesized by Electron Beam Radiation as Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Nanospherical-like manganese monoxide/reduced graphene oxide (MnO/rGO) nanocomposites are synthesized by using an electron beam radiation approach in an aqueous solution containing potassium permanganate and graphene oxide in the presence of acetone as radical scavenger and subsequently calcining in flowing Ar atmosphere. SEM and TEM observations show that nanospherical-like MnO with average size of 20nm are firmly anchored onto the rGO to form MnO/rGO nanocomposites. The typical MnO/rGO nanocomposite exhibits a high initial reversible capacity (977.1mAhg−1) at a current density of 150mAg−1 and delivers 648.4mAhg−1at a rate of 750mAhg−1 with excellent cycling performance (89% of capacity retention over 50 cycles), which indicates that the MnO/rGO nanocomposite is a promising anode candidate for Li-ion batteries. Furthermore, the facile synthetic strategy by using an electron beam radiation provides a novel avenue for making high-performance metal oxide/graphene nanocomposites for energy storage applications.

Comparing potassium permanganate, chlorine dioxide, and chlorine oxidation for manganese control of a volcanic island surface water treated with a conventional coagulation, sedimentation, and filtration process

A comparison of the effectiveness of potassium permanganate (KMnO4), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), and chlorine (Cl2) oxidation pretreatment for manganese (Mn) control from a surface water reservoir on the volcanic island of Guam has been completed. Source water dissolved Mn content was determined to be 7.34 μg/L at a reservoir intake depth of 10 ft, 9.85 μg/L at a depth of 20 ft, 41.6 μg/L at a depth of 30 ft, and 775 μg/L at a 40 foot depth. For the intake depth of 10 ft, it was found that a ClO2 dose of 1.1 mg/L reduced Mn by an average of 98.7%, as compared to an average of 95.9% using a KMnO4 dosage of 1.75 mg/L. Cl2 was found not to reduce dissolved Mn to any extent at dosages of 1.25 mg/L. It was determined that pink water formation occurred with less than 0.5 mg/L of a permanganate overdose. Additionally, a 1.1 mg/L ClO2 dose produced an average chlorite and chlorate by-product concentration of 780–1,080 μg/L, respectively. Results demonstrated that ClO2 would be the preferred oxidant for Mn control as compared to KMnO4 or Cl2 for the volcanic water supply evaluated in this study. The research also verified that a 0.10-micron filter produced more accurate dissolved Mn results than the standard method use of 0.45-micron filter in laboratory procedures.

Treatment technologies and mechanisms for three odorants at trace level: IPMP, IBMP, and TCA

Odour episodes caused by algal metabolites are gaining more and more attention in recent years. Besides geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine (IPMP), 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine (IBMP), and 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA) have emerged to be important off-flavour sources. Their low odour threshold concentrations (several ng ·L−1), which are even lower than those of MIB and geosmin, pose challenges for treatment strategies. Hence, a practical and efficient mitigation technology is needed. The possible practical technologies, including powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption and oxidation by chlorine and potassium permanganate, were investigated. The results indicated that chlorine and potassium permanganate oxidation of the three odorants were unfeasible while PAC adsorption was effective. As for adsorption, TCA, followed by IBMP and IPMP, was most easily removed by PAC. The Freundlich model could well describe the adsorption isotherm data. The adsorption capacities for IPMP, IBMP, and TCA were described as follows: , , and . For five earthy/musty odorants including geosmin and MIB, octanol/water partition coefficient, molecular weight, and polarizability all promoted adsorption while aqueous solubility showed a negative influence. The hydrophobic interaction was believed to be the dominant force in the adsorption mechanism while the π-electron interaction enhanced adsorption when a benzene ring was present. This result could be used to predict the adsorption performance of emerging odorants.

Reducing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons content in coal tar pitch by potassium permanganate oxidation and solvent extraction

This study was conducted to assess the feasibility of using potassium permanganate (KMnO4) as an oxidant to reduce 7 carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) content in two coal tar pitches (CTPs), and to research the oxidation mechanism of KMnO4. It had been observed reduction of major PAHs in CTP after KMnO4 oxidation. The best benzo[a]pyrene equivalency (BaPeq) reduction rate of 82% in n-hexane soluble in a high temperature CTP (HCTP) was achieved with KMnO4 concentration of 0.2M treated for 5h. Specifically, a higher phenanthrene reduction rate (90%) was obtained by using the Soxhlet extraction with n-hexane as solvent on the KMnO4 oxidized HCTP. The single PAH removal rate roughly increases with increasing rings number of PAH, following the order of phenanthrene<fluoranthene<pyrene<benzo[a]pyrene<benzo(b)fluoranthene<indeno[1,2,3-ed]pyrene<benzo[g,h,i]perylene under the same conditions. By using gel penetration chromatography (GPC) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), electrophilic substitution reaction was speculated as the oxidation mechanism of CTP by KMnO4.

Control of ultrafiltration membrane fouling caused by Microcystis cells with permanganate preoxidation: Significance of in situ formed manganese dioxide

Control of the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling caused by Microcystis cells using permanganate preoxidation was investigated with lab-cultured Microcystis aeruginosa. The contributions of two widely considered mechanisms, i.e. potassium permanganate (KMnO4) oxidation and in situ formed manganese dioxide (MnO2) adhesion, to the Microcystis cell fouling control were compared and discussed. Initially, effects of KMnO4 oxidation and in situ formed MnO2 adhesion on the characteristics of Microcystis cells, including viability, zeta potential, size distribution and settleability, were compared. Subsequently, filtration tests were undertaken to investigate the flux decline and fouling reversibility during UF of the untreated and treated cell solutions. The results indicated that KMnO4 oxidation exhibited a minor effect on the characteristics of Microcystis cells as well as the cell integrity under the tested KMnO4 exposure (1.0 and 2.0mg/L). The adhesion of in situ formed MnO2 particles could promote the aggregation of the cells, apparently improving their settleability. With regards to membrane fouling, the in situ formed MnO2 particles displayed a superior capacity in alleviating both the flux decline and the irreversible fouling associated with Microcystis cells than KMnO4 oxidation did, owing to the reinforced aggregation of the cells and the adsorption of released extracellular organic matter (EOM). Moreover, the effect of membrane precoating with in situ formed MnO2 particles on the cell fouling was also studied. The precoating layer seldom reduced the flux decline by Microcystis cells, but improved the fouling reversibility probably by inhibiting the direct membrane-cell contact and retaining the released EOM.

A comparison of iodinated trihalomethane formation from chlorine, chlorine dioxide and potassium permanganate oxidation processes

This study compared the formation of iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs) from iodide-containing raw waters oxidized by chlorine, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4) at different oxidant concentrations, reaction times, pHs, initial iodide concentrations and bromide to iodide mass ratios. Among the six investigated I-THMs, iodoform was the major species formed during the oxidation using chlorine, ClO2 and KMnO4. When oxidant concentration increased from 0.1 to 3.0 mg/L, the formation of I-THMs increased and then decreased for chlorine and ClO2, but kept increasing for KMnO4. As the reaction time went by, I-THM concentration increased to a plateau within 10 h (ClO2 within only 1 h, especially) for all the three oxidants. I-THM formation gradually increased from pH 3.0 to 9.0 and remained stable at pH values higher than 7.5 for chlorine; however, for ClO2 and KMnO4 the highest I-THM formation showed at pH 7.0 and 7.5, respectively. As initial iodide concentration increased from 20 to 800 μg/L, the total amount and species of I-THMs increased for the three oxidants. Iodide contributed to I-THM formation much more significantly than bromide.

Study on Hair Dyeing Wastewater Treatment by the Union Process of Adsorption Coagulation and Potassium Permanganate Oxide

The amount of hair dye wastewater largest stage formed by oxidative hair dye in terms of quantity and quality, there is a serious pollution problem in the aquatic environment. Through analysis of the main component of hair dye to verify the use of activated carbon adsorption - Coagulation - potassium permanganate oxidation technology of wastewater treatment which is effective measures.According to different types of hair dye,about 80% of the market demand oxidative hair dye brown was selected to study. The results showed that the COD of 2427mg / L, the chromaticity of the hair 1000 times wastewater using 1300mg / L activated carbon adsorption treatment alone, the removal rates were 37.79%, 18.29%; in this condition and 140mg / L of mixed PAC condensate combined treatment, removal rates were 90.09%, 90.56%; potassium permanganate solution 70mg / L continues oxidation treatment, the removal rate reached 90.34 %, 97.37 %.

Modification of cyanobacterial bloom-derived biomass using potassium permanganate enhanced the removal of microcystins and adsorption capacity toward cadmium (II)

Cyanobacterial biomass shows high adsorption capacity toward heavy metal ions. However, the cyanotoxins in the cyanobacterial biomass inhibit its application in heavy metals removal. In order to safely and effectively remove Cd(II) from water using cyanobacterial bloom-derived biomass (CBDB), KMnO4 was used to modify CBDB. The results indicated that the microcystins in the CBDB were successfully removed by KMnO4. Potassium permanganate oxidation caused the transformation of hydroxyl to carboxyl on the CBDB, and formed manganese dioxide on the surface of CBDB. The oxidized CBDB showed higher adsorption capacity toward Cd(II) than that of unoxidized treatment. The optimal KMnO4 concentration for increasing the adsorption capacity of CBDB toward Cd(II) was 0.2g/L. The adsorption isotherm of Cd(II) by oxidized- or unoxidized-CBDB was well fitted by Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption of Cd(II) by CBDB was monolayer adsorption. The desorption ratio of Cd(II) from oxidized CBDB was higher than that from unoxidized CBDB in the desorption process using NH4NO3 and EDTA as desorbent. The results presented in this study suggest that KMnO4 modified CBDB may be used as a safe and high efficient adsorbent in Cd(II) removal from water.
