Vaginal hysterectomy is an effective and safe procedure for the patient requiring therapeutic abortion and sterilization with or without the correction of benign gynecologic pathology. A series of 77 consecutive patients who have undergone this procedure from 1961 to 1970 at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital are reviewed. The technique of vaginal hysterectomy in the gravid patient is described. Complications are commonly associated with surgical procedures on the adnexae. Postoperative urinary infections have been significantly reduced by eliminating the use of retention catheters and vaginal packs.
