Comparison of Kinetic Characteristics of Footwork during Stroke in Table Tennis: Cross-Step and Chasse Step.

The cross-step and chasse step are the basic steps of table tennis. This study presents a protocol to investigate the ground reaction force characteristics between cross-step and chasse step during stroke in table tennis. Sixteen healthy male national level 1 table tennis players (Age: 20.75 ± 2.06 years) volunteered to participate in the experiment after understanding the purpose and details of the experiment. All participants were asked to hit the ball into the target zone by cross-step and chasse step, respectively. The ground reaction force in the anterior-posterior, medial-lateral, and vertical directions of the participant was measured by a force platform. The key finding of this study was that: the posterior ground reaction force of cross-step footwork (0.89 ± 0.21) was significantly large (P = 0.014) than the chasse step footwork (0.82 ± 0.18). However, the lateral ground reaction force of cross-step footwork (-0.38 ± 0.21) was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than chasse step footwork (-0.46 ± 0.29) as well as the vertical ground reaction force of cross-step footwork (1.73 ± 0.19) was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than chasse step footwork (1.9 ± 0.33). Based on the mechanism of the kinetic chain, the better lower limb dynamic performance of sliding stroke may be conducive to energy transmission and thus bring gain to the swing speed. Beginners should start from the chasse step to hit the ball technically, and then practice the skill of cross-step.

Gait asymmetries are exacerbated at faster walking speeds in individuals with acute anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Previous research suggests more biomechanically demanding tasks (e.g., stair descent, hopping) magnify biomechanical asymmetries compared with walking after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. However, it is unclear if modifying task-specific constraints, like walking speed also elicits greater biomechanical asymmetries in this population. We examined the effects of manipulating walking speed on ground reaction force (GRF) asymmetries in individuals with ACL reconstruction and uninjured controls. Thirty individuals with ACL reconstruction (age = 20.6 ± 5.4 years, body mass index [BMI] = 23.9 ± 3.3 kg/m2 ) and 15 controls (age = 23.1 ± 4.5 years, BMI = 23.6 ± 2.7 kg/m2 ) were tested on an instrumented treadmill at three speeds (100%, 120%, and 80% self-selected speed). Bilateral vertical and posterior-anterior GRFs were recorded at each speed. GRF asymmetries were calculated by subtracting the uninjured from the injured limb at each percent of stance. Statistical parametric mapping was used to evaluate the effects of speed on GRF asymmetries across stance. We found vertical and posterior GRF asymmetries were exacerbated at faster speeds and reduced at slower speeds in ACL individuals but not controls (p < .05). No differences in anterior GRF asymmetries were observed between speeds in either group (p > .05). Our results suggest increasing walking speed magnifies GRF asymmetries in individuals with ACL reconstruction. Statement of Clinical Significance: Evaluating both preferred and fast walking speeds may aid in characterizing biomechanical asymmetries in individuals with ACL reconstruction which may be valuable in earlier rehabilitative time points when more difficult tasks like hopping and running are not feasible.

Effects of an elastic resistance band exercise program on kinetics and muscle activities during walking in young adults with genu valgus: A double-blinded randomized controlled trial

BackgroundThis double-blinded randomized-controlled-trial aimed to identify the effects of an elastic band resistance training on walking kinetics and muscle activities in young adults with genu valgus. MethodsForty-two male young adults aged 22.5(2.7) years with genu valgus were randomly allocated to two experimental groups. The intervention group (n = 21) conducted a 14-weeks elastic band resistance training. The control group was passive during the intervention period and received the same treatment after the post-tests. Pre and post training, ground reaction forces and lower limb muscle activities were recorded during walking. FindingsResults revealed significant group-by-time interactions for peak medial ground reaction force and time-to-peak for posterior ground reaction force in favor of the intervention group (p < 0.012; d = 0.83–3.76). Resistance training with elastic bands resulted in significantly larger peak medial ground reaction force (p < 0.001; d = 1.45) and longer time-to-peak for posterior ground reaction force (p < 0.001; d = 1.85). Finding showed significant group-by-time interactions for peak positive free moment amplitudes in favor of the intervention group (p < 0.001; d = 1.18–2.02). Resistance training resulted in a lower peak positive free moment amplitude (p = 0.001; d = 1.46). With regards to muscle activities, the analysis revealed significant group-by-time interactions for rectus femoris and gluteus medius activities during the push-off phase in favor of the intervention group (p < 0.038; d = 0.68–0.89). Resistance training induced higher rectus femoris (p = 0.038; d = 0.84) and gluteus medius (p = 0.007; d = 0.54) activities. InterpretationThis study proved the effectiveness of resistance training using elastic bands on kinetics and muscle activities during walking in male adults with genu valgus disorder. Given that this training regime is low cost, effective, and easy-to-administer, we suggest that it should be implemented as a rehabilitative or preventive means for young adults with genu valgus.

Biomechanical asymmetries persist after ACL reconstruction: results of a 2-year study

PurposeThis study was aimed to examine longitudinal (6, 12, 18, 24 months) asymmetries in double-leg landing kinetics and kinematics of subjects with and without unilateral ACLR.MethodsThree-dimensional kinematic and kinetic parameters of 40 participants (n = 20 post-ACLR, n = 20 healthy) were collected with a motion analysis system and force plate during a drop-landing task, and asymmetry indices were compared between groups.ResultsThe asymmetry index (AI) in the ACLR group compared to the healthy group decreased from six to 24 months for vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) from 100% to 6.5% and for anterior posterior ground reaction force (a-pGRF) from 155.5% to 7%. Also, the AI decreased for peak hip flexion moment from 74.5% to 17.1%, peak knee flexion moment from 79.0% to 5.8% and peak ankle dorsiflexion moment from 59.3% to 5.9%. As a further matter, the AI decreased for peak hip abduction moment from 67.8% to 5.1%, peak knee adduction moment from 55.7% to 14.8% and peak knee valgus angle from 48.7% to 23.5%.ConclusionsResults obtained from this longitudinal study showed that ACLR patients still suffer from limb asymmetries during landing tasks, which appear to normalize by 24-monthspost-surgery. This finding can help us to better understand biomechanics of the limbs after ACLR, and design more efficient post-surgery rehabilitation programs.Level of evidenceLevel III.

Anterior-posterior ground reaction forces across a range of running speeds in unilateral transfemoral amputees

ABSTRACT As a fundamental motor pattern, the ability to run at a range of constant speeds is a prerequisite for participating in competitive games and recreational sports. However, it remains unclear how unilateral transfemoral amputees modulate anterior and posterior ground reaction force impulses (GRFIs) in order to maintain constant running speeds. The purpose of this study was to investigate anterior and posterior GRFIs across a wide range of constant running speeds in unilateral transfemoral amputees wearing a running-specific prosthesis. Eleven runners with unilateral transfemoral amputation ran on an instrumented treadmill at 5 different speeds (30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70% of the average velocity of their 100-m personal records). Anterior-posterior ground reaction forces (GRFs) were measured at 1000 Hz over 14 consecutive steps. Impulse, magnitude, and duration of anterior and posterior GRFs were compared between the affected and unaffected limbs at each speed. The net anterior-posterior GRFI, reflecting the changes in horizontal running velocity, was consistently positive (propulsion) in the affected limb and negative (braking) in the unaffected limb at all speeds. Regardless of running speed, unilateral transfemoral amputees maintain constant running speeds not over each step, but over 2 consecutive steps (i.e., one stride).

Ground Reaction Forces Are Predicted with Functional and Clinical Tests in Healthy Collegiate Students.

Increased vertical and posterior ground reaction forces (GRFs) are associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. If a practical means to predict these forces existed, ACL injury risk could be attenuated. Forty-two active college-age individuals (21 females, 20.66 ± 1.46 y, 70.70 ± 2.36 cm, 82.20 ± 7.60 kg; 21 males, 21.57 ± 1.28 y, 65.52 ± 1.87 cm, 64.19 ± 9.05 kg) participated in this controlled laboratory study. GRFs were ascertained by having the subjects perform a unilateral landing task onto a force plate. Several clinical measures (Fat Free Mass (FFM), dorsiflexion passive range of motion (DPROM), isometric peak force of the lateral hip rotators, knee flexor/extensor peak force ratio (H:Q), the completion of the overhead deep squat), two functional tests (Margaria–Kalamen, Single Leg Triple Hop (SLTH)), and sex served as the predictor variables. Regression models to predict the GRFs normalized to the FFM (nGRFz, nGRFy) were generated. nGRFz was best predicted with a linear regression equation that included SLTH and DPROM (adjusted R2 = 0.274; p = 0.001). nGRFy was best predicted with a linear regression equation that included H:Q, FFM, and DPROM (adjusted R2 = 0.476; p < 0.001). Simple clinical measures and functional tests explain a small to moderate amount of the variance associated with the FFM normalized vertical and posterior GRFs in active college-age individuals.

The Effects Of External Loading On Lower Extremity Landing Biomechanics In College Rotc Cadets

Military personnel performs in combat and physical training with extensive external loading from combat gear that may increase risk for lower extremity musculoskeletal injury. Lower extremity musculoskeletal injury risk is high in this population and can threaten deployment, completion of duty, and quality of life. However, there is limited research determining the effects of external loading on landing biomechanics in military situations. PURPOSE: To determine if external loading affects lower extremity landing biomechanics during a jump landing task in ROTC cadets. METHODS: Twenty five ROTC cadets (age: 20.2±1.3yr; height: 174.4±11.3cm; mass: 77.0±5.1kg) were recruited and performed two conditions of three jump landings (baseline vs loaded landing with an additional 35% body weight (BW) vest) from a 30cm high box. The box was placed a distance of 50% of their height from the landing zone of two force plates. Lower extremity angular joint kinematics and ground reaction forces (GRFs) were compared between the two conditions using paired t-tests (α<.05). RESULTS: The loaded landing compared to baseline landing, resulted in decreased knee (16.8±3.7 and 19.4±4.7°) and hip (30.4±6.3° and 32.7±5.4°) flexion at initial contact (IC), and increased maximal joint flexion displacements for ankle (36.0±11.5° and 31.4±9.9°), knee (56.2±7.2° and 49.0±6.5°), and hip (23.8±5.6° and 18.5±4.9°). Furthermore, loaded landings, compared with baseline landings, exhibited significantly lower vertical GRF (2.3±0.5 N·kg-1 and 2.7±0.5 N·kg-1) and posterior GRF (0.6±0.1 N·kg-1 and 0.7±0.1 N·kg-1). CONCLUSION: Loaded landings increased key injury risk landing biomechanics. Less knee and hip flexion at IC have been associated with potential anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk and may increase ACL loading during landing. However, the less peak vertical and posterior GRFs with greater displacement of all three lower extremity joints on during loaded landing suggests cadets employed a compensation strategy that may reduce ACL loading after IC.

Effect of rocker-sole footwear on knee joint biomechanics while walking in people with ACL-reconstructed knees: a cross-sectional biomechanical study

Background: Reinjury has occurred at a high rate after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Low knee flexion angles and high peak posterior ground reaction forces in landing tasks increase ACL loading. Some studies reported that rocker-sole shoes increased knee flexion angle in the early stance phase of the gait. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanics of walking with a custom-made heel-to-toe rocker shoe design, with special attention to the sagittal knee joint kinematics of patients after ACL reconstruction. Methods: This study examined 10 male participants with ACL-reconstruction participants. Three-dimensional gait analysis was performed under two conditions of level walking that were tested in random order using either modified footwear adapted with a heel-to-toe rocker sole or baseline footwear with a flat sole. The knee flexion angle at initial foot contact with the ground, average knee flexion angle from heel strike to 25% stance phase, and first peak knee flexion angle were compared across footwear conditions. Results: Walking with the heel-to-toe rocker shoes increased the knee flexion angle at the early stance phase of the gait cycle when compared with the baseline footwear. Conclusions: Rocker-shoe intervention was found to have potential as a rehabilitation tool to modify gait patterns in the sagittal plane of people with ACL-reconstructed knees and may protect against high reinjury rates. Further research is required to evaluate whether prolonged wear of rocker-sole shoes can modify lower extremity biomechanics of participants who have undergone ACL reconstruction. Sex-based differences in landing mechanics vary between the drop vertical jump and stop jump

The purpose of the present study was to compare landing mechanics between the stop jump (SJ) and drop vertical jump (DVJ) and to compare sex-based differences in landing mechanics between tasks. 50 healthy recreational athletes were recruited and each participant completed seven SJs and seven DVJs. Peak knee flexion and abduction angle, knee flexion and ab/adduction range of motion (ROM), peak vertical and posterior ground reaction force (GRF), peak internal knee extension and knee adduction moment were computed for the dominant limb during the first landing of both tasks. A two-way ANOVA was used to determine the effects of and interactions between sex (men vs women) and task (SJ vs DVJ) for each outcome. There was an interaction for peak vertical GRF (p = 0.024), knee flexion ROM (p = 0.027), knee ab/adduction ROM (p = 0.047), and peak knee flexion (p = 0.034) and adduction (p = 0.012) moment. The SJ resulted in smaller vertical GRFs, larger posterior GRFs, and larger peak internal knee adduction moments relative to the DVJ (all p < 0.002). Women landed with larger peak knee abduction angles, larger internal knee adduction moments, and smaller knee extension moments relative to men (p = 0.001–0.026). Overall, as the SJ resulted in larger posterior GRFs and internal knee adduction moments, this task produced movements which resemble most anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and are risk factors for ACL injuries. As the SJ produced more sex-based differences, it may be better suited than the DVJ for ACL injury risk screening. This study therefore stressed the importance of selecting an appropriate landing task for ACL injury prevention research and clinical return to sport assessment.

Walking speed changes in response to user-driven treadmill control after stroke

The objective of this study was to determine how individuals poststroke respond to user-driven treadmill (UDTM) controlin terms ofwalking speeds, peak anterior ground reaction forces (AGRF), peak posterior ground reaction forces (PGRF), and trailing limb angles (TLA). Twenty individuals with chronic stroke walked overground during a 10-meter walk test to determine their self-selected (SS) speeds before walking on a treadmill in its fixed-speed (FSTM) and UDTM control modes at their SS and fastest comfortable (Fast) speeds. Paired t-tests were used to compare the walking speeds, peak AGRF, peak PGRF, and TLA among test conditions (α = 0.05). Participants selected similar SS (p > 0.05) and faster Fast walking speeds (p < 0.05) with the UDTM control compared to the FSTM control. There were no changes in their peak AGRF or PGRF for either limb or speed between UDTM and FSTM conditions (p > 0.05). Individuals used greater paretic TLA at SS speeds with UDTM control (p < 0.05). There was no difference in the AGRF required at Fast speeds with FSTM and UDTM control even though participants selected faster speeds with UDTM control. In work with young, healthy adults, we found that the treadmill control condition did not affect the amount of forward propulsion needed. Therefore, it is likely that when walking with UDTM control, individuals poststroke adjust their posture to make better use of their forward propulsion. This means they can reach faster walking speeds without increasing their push-off forces. Future work should assess how to most effectively prescribe UDTM control for gait training programs.

The relationship between neck angles and ground reaction forces in schoolchildren during backpack carriage

Summary Study aim: This study aimed to examine the effect of carrying backpacks on neck posture and ground reaction forces (GRFs) and to investigate the relationship between neck angles and GRFs during backpack carriage in schoolchildren. Material and methods: The craniohorizontal angle (CHA), craniovertebral angle (CVA), sagittal shoulder posture (SSP) and GRFs were measured in right-handed schoolchildren (14 male and 12 female) with mean age 10.17 ± 1.15 years during loaded and unloading conditions. The Qualisys motion analysis system with a force plate was used to assess the neck angles and GRFs. Results: During backpack carriage there was a significant increase in the CHA (p = 0.001), significant decrease in the CVA and SSP (p = 0.001, 0.016 respectively), no significant difference in the normalized (scaled to body weight) vertical GRFs (p &gt; 0.05), and a significant increase in the anterior braking and posterior propulsive GRFs (p = 0.035, 0.002 respectively) compared to the unloading condition. While carrying a backpack there was a moderate negative correlation between the SSP and first vertical GRF (r = –0.464) and a strong negative correlation with the second vertical GRF (r = –0.571) and the posterior propulsive GRF (r = –0.587). Conclusion: Carrying a backpack weighing 15% of the child’s body weight changes the head posture and increases the normalized value of the anterior-posterior shear force. During backpack carriage, decreasing the SSP is associated with increasing the load acceptance, thrusting and posterior propulsive forces. Increasing the shearing force may lead to development of postural abnormities. Consequently, the ideal backpack weight should be considered by parents and teachers.

Effects of Two Competitive Soccer Matches on Landing Biomechanics in Female Division I Soccer Players.

Fatigue has been proposed to increase the risk of knee injury. This study tracked countermovement jump, knee isometric strength, and kinetics and kinematics in 8 female soccer players (experimental group) during an anticipated sidestep maneuver before and after two matches played over a 43-h period. Time points were: Before and after match 1 (T0 and T1), 12 h after the first match (T2), and immediately after the second match (T3). A control group participated only in practice sessions. Isometric knee extension strength decreased by 14.8% at T2 (p = 0.003), but knee flexion was not affected until T3, declining by 12.6% (p = 0.018). During the sidestep maneuver, knee joint degrees of flexion at initial contact was increased by 17.1% at T3, but maximum knee and hip angle at initial contact were unchanged. Peak resultant ground reaction force (GRF) increased by 12.6% (p = 0.047) at T3 (3.03 xBW) from 2.69 xBW at T0, while posterior GRF was significantly higher than T0 at all three subsequent time points (T1 = 0.82 ± 0.23 xBW, T2 = 0.87 ± 0.22 xBW, T3 = 0.89 ± 0.22 xBW). Anterior tibial shear force increased significantly (p = 0.020) at T3 (1.24 ± 0.12 xBW) compared to T1 (1.15 ± 0.13 xBW), an 8.8% increase. Lateral tibial shear force was significantly higher at both T1 (0.95 ± 0.20 xBW) and T3 (1.15 ± 0.38 xBW) compared to T0 (0.67 ± 0.25 xBW). These findings suggest that participation in a soccer match has significant effects on both physical performance parameters and kinetics/kinematics during a sidestep cut, but these can be more pronounced after a second match with short rest.

Wireless Ground Reaction Force Sensing System Using a Mechanically Decoupled Two-Dimensional Force Sensor

We present the design process of a mechanically decoupled two-dimensional force sensor (M2D) for the implementation of a wearable ground reaction force (GRF) sensing system. The proposed sensor is capable of sensing up to 1000 and $ \pm \text{300 N}$ in the vertical GRF (vGRF) direction and the anterior–posterior GRF (apGRF) direction, respectively, with accuracies of $\text{2.81} \pm \text{0.29}\%$ and $\text{1.67} \pm \text{0.15}\%$ , respectively. With only two reflective optical sensors for each M2D, one for each axis, the mechanical structure of the M2D allows two-dimensional forces to be measured with an axial interference of approximately 1.37% and 2.39% and a repeatability of 0.95% and 1.35% for vGRFs and apGRFs, respectively. A wireless, wearable GRF sensing system was implemented using two M2Ds attached to the outsole of a shoe: one at the heel and the other at the forefoot. The normalized root mean square error value between a conventional stationary force plate and the proposed system for 30 consecutive steps of five subjects was approximately $\text{4.93} \pm \text{2.56}\% $ and $\text{4.22} \pm \text{2.12}\% $ for the vGRF and the apGRF, respectively.

Relationship between electromyographic activity of knee joint muscles with vertical and posterior ground reaction forces in anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed patients during a single leg vertical drop landing task

ABSTRACTThe objective of the present study is to examine the relation between activity patterns of knee joint muscles with vertical and posterior ground reaction forces (VGRF and PGRF, respectively) in patients after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Twenty males post-ACLR participated in this cross-sectional study. The association between muscle activity with VGRF and PGRF was assessed during a single leg vertical drop-landing task. There were strong negative associations between preparatory VL, VM and MG activity and PGRF (P< 0.05). Strong positive associations were found between reactive VM and LH activity with PGRF (P< 0.05). Preparatory co-activation of VM: MH had significant negative associations with VGRF (P< 0.05) and reactive co-activation of VL:LH had a significant positive relation with PGRF(P< 0.05). Greater preparatory activity and co-activation of knee muscles were associated with lower peak PGRF and VGRF, whereas greater reactive activity and co-activation of knee muscles was associated with greater peak PGRF and VGRF. According to our findings, both activity and co-activation of knee muscles during the preparatory phase were associated with reduced PGRF and VGRF, respectively in ACLR patients; thus, incorporating exercises in order to increase preparatory activity and co-activation of knee joint muscles into rehabilitation programs in ACLR patients seems necessary.

Physical Factors Differentiate Pain-free Return To Play And Return With Knee Symptoms 9 Months After ACL Reconstruction

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify strength, power and biomechanical differences between male athletes who made a pain free return to play (RTP) and those that did not at 9 month post ACL reconstruction. METHODS: Nine months after ACLR 158 males athletes who had returned to pre-injury sport participation (64 reporting knee symptoms/94 reporting none) carried out strength testing using isokinetic dynamometry on quadriceps and hamstrings and 3D biomechanical analysis of single countermovement jump, single leg drop jump and planned and unplanned 90° change of direction (CoD) as well as an IKDC questionnaire. Differences in IKDC, strength and jump height measures on the ACLR side and in limb symmetry index (LSI) between groups were analysed with statistical parametric mapping (SPM, 0D unpaired t-test). The odds ratio for making a pain free RTP if LSI >90% was also calculated for the strength and jump variables independently and collectively. Biomechanical differences in the jump and CoD tests on the ACLR side and in symmetry between groups was analysed with SPM (1d, unpaired t-test). Effect size was calculated using Cohen’s D for all analyses. RESULTS: There was a large effect size (ES) difference in IKDC score between groups (89 +/- 6 with no pain; 80 +/- 8 with pain; ES 1.1). There were medium effect size differences in quadriceps strength on ACLR side (ES 0.42) and LSI (0.45) with an odds ratio of 2.7. There were similar differences in SLDJ height on ACLR side (ES 0.3) and LSI (0.37) with an odds ratio of 3.5. The odds of making a pain free RTP when LSI >90% on all tests was 6.8. There were no biomechanical differences between groups on the jump tests. There were biomechanical differences on the more demanding CoD tests with differences on the on the ACLR side and symmetry in foot rotation angle, knee extension moment and hip rotation angle (ES 0.51 to 0.61) in the unplanned CoD and in symmetry of posterior and vertical ground reaction force and COM velocity at initial contact (ES 0.5 to 0.58) in the unplanned CoD with greater asymmetry in the painful group. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates strength, power and biomechanical differences in those that RTP with knee symptoms after ACLR with those achieving >90% LSI in all 4 strength and jump tests almost 7 times more likely to make a pain free RTP.

Altered movement strategies during jump landing/cutting in patients with chronic ankle instability.

Centrally mediated changes in sensorimotor function have been reported in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI). However, little is known regarding supraspinal/spinal adaptations during lower-extremity dynamic movement during a multiplanar, single-leg landing/cutting task. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of CAI on landing/cutting neuromechanics, including lower-extremity kinematic, electromyography (EMG) activation, and ground reaction force (GRF) characteristics. One hundred CAI patients and 100 matched healthy controls performed five trials of a jump landing/cutting task. Sagittal- and frontal-plane ankle, knee and hip kinematics, EMG activation in eight lower-extremity muscles, and 3D GRF were collected during jump landing/cutting. Functional analyses of variance (FANOVA) were used to evaluate between-group differences for dependent variables throughout the entire ground contact of the task. Relative to the control group, the CAI group revealed (a) reduced dorsiflexion, increased knee and hip flexion angles, (b) increased inversion and hip adduction angles, (c) increased EMG activation of medial gastrocnemius, peroneus longus, adductor longus, vastus lateralis, gluteus medius, and gluteus maximus, and (d) increased posterior and vertical GRF during initial landing, and reduced medial, posterior, and vertical GRF during mid-landing and mid-cutting. CAI patients demonstrated alterations in landing/cutting movement strategies as demonstrated by a higher susceptibility of foot placement for lateral ankle sprains, and more flexed positions of the knee and hip with higher EMG activation of knee and hip extensors to modulate GRF to compensate for the unstable ankle. This apparent compensation may be due to mechanical (limited dorsiflexion angle) and/or sensorimotor deficits in the ankle.

Single leg landing movement differences between male and female badminton players after overhead stroke in the backhand-side court

Females showed higher anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries rate on the opposite side of dominant hand compared with males during single leg landing in the backhand-side court after overhead stroke. The purpose of this study was to conduct biomechanics testing including kinematics and kinetics to provide some insights on the ACL injuries risks during single leg landing in the backhand-side court after overhead stroke between females and males. Twenty collegiate badminton players (10 females, 10 males) voluntarily participated in this study. Sagittal plane kinematic and kinetic data of the lower limb, and their ground reaction forces during the single leg landing in the backhand-side court after overhead stroke were collected. Results shown that, at the peak posterior ground reaction force (GRF) moment, the ankle dorsiflexion, knee and hip flexion angles of the female were lower than that of male. Meantime, the knee extension moment of the female was lower than that of males but the hip extension moment of the female was larger compared to males at the peak posterior GRF moment. The peak vertical and posterior GRF of female badminton players were larger than that of males. Decreased hip, knee, and ankle flexion angles at the peak posterior GRF moment and greater peak vertical and posterior GRF may expose female badminton players to the higher risk ACL injuries compared to males during single leg landing after overhead stroke in the backcourt-side. Preventative training programs designed to prevent the ACL injuries rate of female badminton players should take these factors into consideration.

Mid-flight trunk flexion and extension altered segment and lower extremity joint movements and subsequent landing mechanics

ObjectivesTo assess the effect of mid-flight trunk flexion and extension on the movements of body segments and lower extremity joints and subsequent landing mechanics during a jump-landing task. DesignParticipants performed three jump-landing conditions in a randomized order. MethodsForty-one participants completed jump-landing trials when performing three different mid-flight trunk motion: reaching forward, reaching up, and reaching backward. Whole-body kinematic and ground reaction force data were collected. ResultsThe reaching backward condition resulted in a more posteriorly positioned upper body center of mass (COM) and more anteriorly positioned pelvis COM, legs COM, hip, and knee joint positions relative to the whole-body COM in flight and at initial contact of landing. The reaching backward condition showed the least hip flexion and ankle plantarflexion angles at initial contact as well as the least hip and knee flexion angles and the greatest ankle dorsiflexion angles at 100ms after landing. The reaching backward condition also demonstrated the greatest peak posterior ground reaction forces, peak and average knee extension moments, peak and average hip flexion moments, and peak knee varus moments within the first 100ms after landing. Opposite changes were observed for the reaching forward condition. ConclusionsMid-flight trunk extension resulted in body postures that predisposed individuals to land with increased knee extension and varus moments and decreased knee flexion angles, which are indirectly associated with increased ACL loading. These findings may help to understand altered trunk motion during certain ACL injury events and provide information for developing jump-landing training strategies.

Subtle alterations in whole body mechanics during gait following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

BackgroundClinically, normalization of gait following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLr) is defined as the absence of observable deviations. However, biomechanical studies report altered knee mechanics during loading response (LR); a time of double limb support and weight transfer between limbs. It is conceivable that subtle adjustments in whole body mechanics, including center of mass (COM) velocity and ground reaction force (GRF) peaks and timing, are present. Research questionThe purpose was to compare limb and whole body mechanics during LR of gait in the surgical and non-surgical limbs post-ACLr. MethodsAnterior and vertical COM velocity at initial contact; knee flexion range of motion, peak knee extensor moment, peak vertical and posterior GRF, minimum vertical COM position and maximum anterior and vertical COM velocity during LR were identified for twenty individuals 112 ± 17 days post-ACLr without observable gait deficits. To assess differences in timing of COM variables, coupling angles (vector coding) were calculated for multidirectional coordination of vertical and anteroposterior COM velocities and GRFs and categorized as in-phase, anti-phase, vertical phase, or anteroposterior phase coordination. Paired t-tests compared peaks between limbs; non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank tests compared coordination pattern frequency. ResultsLess knee range of motion (5.6 °), 30% smaller knee extensor moment, 11% smaller posterior GRF, and slower anterior COM velocity at initial contact (2%) and peak during LR (1.3%; all p < 0.05) were observed in the surgical compared to the non-surgical limb. For COM velocity coordination, lesser anti-phase (7.38%) and greater in-phase coordination (2.88%) were observed in the surgical limb. For GRF coordination, less in-phase coordination (1.94%) was observed in the surgical limb. SignificanceDifferences in coordination patterns, suggest that individuals post-ACLr make subtle adjustments in timing of whole body mechanics; particularly in COM velocity during gait. These adjustments are consistent with reduced sagittal plane loading in the surgical knee.

Biomechanical but not timed performance asymmetries persist between limbs 9 months after ACL reconstruction during planned and unplanned change of direction

Whilst anterior cruciate ligament injury commonly occurs during change of direction (CoD) tasks, there is little research on how athletes execute CoD after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The aims of this study were to determine between-limb and between-test differences in performance (time) and joint kinematics and kinetics during planned and unplanned CoD. One hundred and fifty-six male subjects carried out 90° maximal effort, planned and unplanned CoD tests in a 3D motion capture laboratory 9 months after ACLR. Statistical parametric mapping (2 × 2 ANOVA; limb × test) was used to identify differences in CoD time and biomechanical measures between limbs and between tests. There was no interaction effect but a main effect for limb and task. There was no between-limb difference in the time to complete both CoD tests. Between-limb differences were found for internal knee valgus moment, knee internal rotation and flexion angle, knee extension and external rotation moment and ankle external rotation moment with lower values on the ACLR side (effect size 0.72–0.5). Between test differences were found with less contralateral pelvis rotation, distance from centre of mass to the ankle in frontal plane, posterior ground reaction force and greater hip abduction during the unplanned CoD (effect size 0.75–0.5). Findings demonstrated that kinematic and kinetic differences between limbs are evident during both CoD tests 9 months after surgery, despite no statistical differences in performance time. Biomechanical differences between tests were found in variables, which have previously been associated with ACL injury mechanism during unplanned CoD.
