Raymond Hains's “France in Shreds” and the Politics of Décollage

ABSTRACT This article traces the reception of Raymond Hains's 1961 exhibition of torn posters relating to the war in Algeria, titled “La France déchirée” (France in Shreds). By examining how these works were read, and how they both mobilized and contained their imagery for different audiences, the political instability of montage during the early sixties—its availability as a tool of ambiguity for artists like Hains—becomes clear.

Among many good posters it was really a challenge to determine the best one. I wish to warmly thank my colleges in the jury: Professor Egboka from Nigeria, Dr Hagebro from Denmark, Professor Rahman from the US and Mr Nyberg from the Stockholm Water Company, Sweden, for their dedicated work. For the evaluation we used the following criteria:• scientific value;• efficiency in message, graphical design and layout;• news value.A brief comment on the poster exhibition this year is that we can see a trend towards more integrated studies with solution orientation and involvement of stakeholders. Overall quality has also increased.

Primary Care Diabetes Europe: 5th International Conference

Abstractmagnified image In his opening address, Dr Neil Munro (UK), the Chairman of Primary Care Diabetes Europe (PCDE), welcomed delegates from 27 European countries, representing many diverse professionals from primary care to the 5th international conference of the organisation. He took pride in the fact that over 60 submissions had been received on a wide variety of diabetes‐related subjects and paid tribute to the Scientific Committee chaired by Roseline Debaillie for their work in selecting those included in the poster exhibition. Dr Munro pointed out that the burden of care for people with diabetes—set to double by 2010–would fall mainly on primary care (PC). The conference was intended to address the issues raised by this huge challenge and to explore strategies for containing the epidemic. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Report of the EFFoST/GDL congress on minimal processing of foods

Parallel to the food exhibition Anuga Food Tec in Cologne the congress ‘Minimal Processing of Foods — A Challenge for Quality and Safety’ took place on November 6–8, 1996. It was organized by the European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST) and the Gesellschaft Deutscher Lebensmitteltechnologen (GDL, Association of German Food Technologists). More than 500 persons from 29 countries participated. After some introductory lectures on common aspects and overview reports, 53 lectures were presented in 13 meetings on the following topics: Minimal processing, opportunities and energy efficiency; Food technologies for the future; Thermal processes; Preparation, preservation and quality; Microbiological safety and process control; Plant logistics; Food law; Developments in packaging. A panel discussion on food law and a poster exhibition completed the congress programme. The lectures which referred to the packing area are reported in the following. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Recent Advances in Flame Retardancy of Polymeric Materials

The Seventh Annual Conference on Flame Retardancy was held in International Plaza Hotel in Stamford, Connecticut, USA on May 20-22, 1996, As before it was organized and sponsored by Business Communications Company (BCC). Scientists from 15 countries (USA, Canada, Germany, Israel, Russia, Belorussia, Italy, UK, China, Taiwan, Japan, France, South Korea, Sweden, Ireland) contributed in the conference. The meeting was aimed to: - Create a forum for introducing new technological achievements and development in the field of flame retardancy - Review the current state of science and technology in FR - Review in applications and markets for FR products - Present recent devolopment in local and global standardization and in testing technology - Discuss toxicity and environmental issues - Provide a unique opportunity for newcomers to FR research technology and marketing to become acquainted with the FR field in all its aspects - Discuss halogen-based and non-halogen-based flame retardant chemicals, synergism, intumescence, FR mechanism, modeling, flame parameters, inherently FR polymers and polymer blends. 35 plenary lectures were presented at the conference which also included 2 Poster sessions and Exhibition of industrial chemical additives for polymers, reducing flammability of materials. Several leading US companies demonstrated their promotion in the exhibition. The work was organized in 6 sessions. The meeting was opened with remarks of Prof. Menachem Lewin (Polymer Research Institute at Brooklyn Polytechnic University, New York, USA), who emphasised the present interest of science and practice of the aforesaid problems.

Posters as a Library Resource:

Posters are not commonly acquisitioned by libraries because they cannot be processed, cataloged and stored in a way books and journals are, and unlike printed text are not viewed as an information commodity. In an informal survey of ARL libraries, only the Library of Congress defined the role of posters as an important component of its collecting activities. At Colorado State University, an international poster exhibition occurs biennially which is the only one of its kind in the United States, and posters from exhibitions since 1991 are given to the university library. The library developed a descriptive record of the posters and digitized the images on to compact disks. With catalog, storage, and imaging technology now in place, the posters are valuable as a library resource because they encompass many disciplines of university study and serve as a commentary on our culture.

Interferon: a tertiary structure predicted from amino acid sequences.

Functional studies on interferon would be helped by a three-dimensional structure for the molecule. However, it may be several years before the structure of the protein is determined by X-ray crystallography. We have therefore used available methods for predicting the secondary - and the tertiary - structure of a protein from its amino acid sequence to propose a tertiary model involving the packing of four a-helices. Details of this work have been published elsewhere (Sternberg & Cohen 1982).

New very efficient antibiotics in the field of cephalosporin derivatives.

The semi-synthetic cephalosporin derivatives containing a 2-(2-amino-4-thiazolyl)-2- syn -oxyiminoacetyl side chain are obtained according to the general reaction sequence outlined in figure 1. They are characterized by a very high level of antimicrobial activity, especially against Gram-negative species. This unexpected result is due to the conjunction of two structural features: the aminothiazolyl moiety and the syn -oxyimino substituent.
