Unlike previous volumes, which included only selected lectures from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' annual meeting, this volume includes some material presented in continuing education courses sponsored by the Academy. The editors have provided a variety of interesting topics that are discussed by authors with rich clinical and investigative experience. Though the orientation of the entire series is directed primarily toward orthopedic surgeons, a chapter written by Dr. Marshall Urist on "Osteoporosis versus Osteomalacia" provides an excellent foundation for the diagnosis and management of these problems, particularly in postmenopausal women. Anyone associated with trauma will find a remarkably thorough chapter by Drs. Peter Beck and John Collins on the posttraumatic fat embolism syndrome. A comprehensive survey of the literature by the authors provides the reader with an up-to-date summary of all aspects of this troublesome syndrome.
