Hydrophobic Microenvironment Modulation of Ru Nanoparticles in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Electrocatalytic N2 Reduction.

The modulation of the chemical microenvironment surrounding metal nanoparticles (NPs) is an effective means to enhance the selectivity and activity of catalytic reactions. Herein, a post-synthetic modification strategy is developed to modulate the hydrophobic microenvironment of Ru nanoparticles encapsulated in a metal-organic framework (MOF), MIP-206, namely Ru@MIP-Fx (where x represents perfluoroalkyl chain lengths of 3, 5, 7, 11, and 15), in order to systematically explore the effect of the hydrophobic microenvironment on the electrocatalytic activity. The increase of perfluoroalkyl chain length can gradually enhance the hydrophobicity of the catalyst, which effectively suppresses the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Moreover, the electrocatalytic production rate of ammonia and the corresponding Faraday efficiency display a volcano-like pattern with increasing hydrophobicity, with Ru@MIP-F7 showing the highest activity. Theoretical calculations and experiments jointly show that modification of perfluoroalkyl chains of different lengths on MIP-206 modulates the electronic state of Ru nanoparticles and reduces the rate-determining step for the formation of the key intermediate of N2H2 *, leading to superior electrocatalytic performance.

Cysteamine-Anchored MOF through Post-Synthetic Modification Strategy for the Effective Removal of Mercury from Water.

The introduction of cysteamine functionality, referred to as Q-ZIF-67-SH, was successfully achieved through postsynthetic modification while maintaining the structural and thermal stability of the quasi metal-organic framework Q-ZIF-67. By subjecting ZIF-67 to controlled partial deligandation at 310 °C under an air atmosphere, a substantial number of unsaturated cobalt sites were generated within the quasi ZIF-67 (Q-ZIF-67) structure. These unsaturated cobalt sites facilitated effective coordination with cysteamine, resulting in the development of the thiol-functionalized framework Q-ZIF-67-SH. The potential of these metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorptive removal of hazardous Hg(II) was investigated. Various factors, such as the type of sorbent, pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of Hg(II), and presence of coexisting ions, were thoroughly examined and comprehensively explained. Thiol-anchored MOF significantly enhanced the efficiency of Hg(II) removal, achieving an impressive removal rate of up to 99.2%. Furthermore, it demonstrated a maximum adsorption capacity of 994 mg g-1 and a distribution coefficient of 2.5 × 106 mL g-1. A good correspondence with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model was observed through the fitting of adsorption kinetics and the isotherm model. The thermodynamic data strongly indicate that the adsorptive removal of Hg(II) is characterized by endothermicity and spontaneity. This signifies that the process is energetically favorable and has potential for efficient Hg(II) removal. Therefore, the Q-ZIF-67-SH sorbent emerges as a promising and advantageous option for the removal of Hg(II) from water.

Eu(III) functionalized ZnMOF based efficient dual-emission sensor integrated with self-calibrating logic gate for intelligent detection of epinephrine

The rapid detection of epinephrine (EPI) in serum holds immense importance in the early disease diagnosis and regular monitoring. On the basis of the coordination post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategy, a Eu3+ functionalized ZnMOF (Eu3+@ZnMOF) was fabricated by anchoring the Eu3+ ions within the microchannels of ZnMOF as secondary luminescent centers. Benefiting from two independent luminescent centers, the prepared Eu3+@ZnMOF shows great potential as a multi-signal self-calibrating luminescent sensor in visually and efficiently detecting serum EPI levels, with high reliability, fast response time, excellentrecycleability, and low detection limits of 17.8 ng/mL. Additionally, an intelligent sensing system was designed in accurately and reliably detecting serum EPI levels, based on the designed self-calibrating logic gates. Furthermore, the possible sensing mechanisms were elucidated through theoretical calculations as well as spectral overlaps. This work provides an effective and promising strategy for developing MOFs-based self-calibrating intelligent sensing platforms to detect bioactive molecules in bodily fluids.

Bimodal Oxidation Electrochemiluminescence Mechanism of Coreactant-Embedded Covalent Organic Frameworks via Postsynthetic Modification.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) efficiency is determined by charge transfer between coreactants and emitters in coreactant systems, which are usually limited by their slow intermolecular charge transfer. In this study, a covalent organic framework (COF) with aldehyde residue was synthesized, and then coreactants were covalently integrated into the skeleton through the postsynthetic modification strategy, resulting in a crystalline coreactant-embedded COF nanoemitter (C-COF). Compared to the pristine COF with an equivalent external coreactant, C-COF exhibited an extraordinary 1008-fold enhancement of ECL intensity due to the rapid intrareticular charge transfer. Significantly, with the pH increase, C-COF shows protonation-induced ECL enhancement for the first ECL peaked at +1.1 V and an opposite trend for the second ECL at +1.4 V, which were attributed to the antedating oxidation of coreactant in framework and COF self-oxidation, respectively. The resulting bimodal oxidation ECL mechanism was rationalized by spectral characterization and density functional theory calculations. The postsynthetic coreactant-embedded nanoemitters present innovative and universal avenues for advancing ECL systems.

Photo-crosslinked hydrogel as a sensing platform for sensitive detection of free bilirubin in urine samples

In cases of liver lesions or metabolic blockages, the accumulation of bilirubin in the blood can lead to hyperbilirubinemia, resulting in jaundice. Hence, the development of a rapid and highly selective assay strategy for accurately quantifying free bilirubin concentrations in humans is crucial for clinical diagnosis and treatment. In this study, a postsynthetic modification (PSM) strategy was used to obtain UiO-66-PSM (UP) by the aldimine condensation reaction of metal-organic framework UiO-66-NH2 with 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde. UP itself possesses strong fluorescent properties. Subsequently, UiO-66-PSM-Fe (UPF) was synthesized by incorporating Fe3+ onto the UP surface using a one-pot method, where the interaction of Fe3+ with UP induced fluorescence quenching. Bilirubin has a strong binding affinity for Fe3+. Therefore, it can react with the UPF, losing Fe3+ and regaining fluorescence, and thus realizing the detection of bilirubin. In order to further improve the detection outcome and facilitate the application, UPF was loaded onto gelatin methacryloyl hydrogel to construct a fluorescence sensor. This enabled highly sensitive determination of bilirubin with a method limit of detection of 5.67 pM. Furthermore, genuine human urine samples were analyzed, demonstrating the practical application of the assay in discovering human health conditions associated with bilirubin.

Chiral hydroxyl-controlled covalent organic framework-modified stationary phase for chromatographic enantioseparation.

Chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) possess asuperior chiral recognition environment, abundant pore configuration, and favorable physicochemical stability. In the post-synthetic chiral modification of COFs, research usually focused on increasing the density of chiral sites as much as possible, and little attention has been paid to the influence of the density of chiral sites on the spatial structure and chiral separation performance of CCOFs. In this article, 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TPB), 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (DHTP), and 2,5-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde (DMTP) served as the platform molecules to directly establish hydroxyl-controlled COFs through Schiff base condensation reactions. Then the novel chiral selectors 6-deoxy-6-[1-(2-aminoethyl)-3-(4-(4-isocyanatobenzyl)phenyl)urea]-β-cyclodextrin (UB-β-CD) were pended into the micropore structures of COFs via covalent bond for further construction the [UB-β-CD]x-TPB-DMTP COFs (x represents the density of chiral sites). The chiral sites density on [UB-β-CD]x-TPB-DMTP COFs was regulated by changing the construction proportion of DHTP to obtain a satisfactory CCOFs and significantly improve the ability of chiral separation. [UB-β-CD]x-TPB-DMTP COFs were coated on the inner wall of a capillary via a covalently bonding strategy. The prepared open tubular capillary exhibited strong and broad enantioselectivity toward a variety of chiral analytes, including sixteen racemic amino acids and six model chiral drugs. By comparing the outcomes of chromatographic separation, we observed that the density of chiral sites in CCOFs was not positively correlated with their enantiomeric separation performance. The mechanism of chiral recognition [UB-β-CD]x-TPB-DMTP COFs were further demonstrated by molecular docking simulation. This study not only introduces a new high-efficiency member of the COFs-based CSPs family but also demonstrates the enantioseparation potential of CCOFs constructed with traditional post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategy by utilizing the inherent characteristics of porous organic frameworks.

Eu3+-functionalized metal organic framework applied as “red-green indicator” for tetracycline

The misuse of antibiotics, such as tetracycline (TC), can seriously harm human health so it is of great practical importance to sensitively and rapidly detect TC. In this paper, an Eu3+-functionalized Zr-MOF (Eu3+@UiO-66-(OH)2) was successfully prepared by a post-synthetic modification strategy as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for ultrasensitive and specific detection of TC in aqueous medium. The proposed Eu3+@UiO-66-(OH)2 sensor possessed remarkable fluorescence enhancement properties besides high specific surface area and excellent stability. In the quantitative analysis of TC, the sensor exhibited fast response (<60 s), wide linear range (0–160 μM), high sensitivity (detection limit as low as 1.33 nM) and high selectivity for TC. Furthermore, it has been successfully utilized in determination of TC in real samples, demonstrating its application potential in complex environmental water system.

A post-synthetic modification strategy for enhancing Pt adsorption efficiency in MOF/polymer composites

A post-synthetic modification strategy was developed to graft metal chelating thiols to polydopamine inside Fe-BTC. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed interesting redox properties of the composite that help extract and reduce Pt(iv) from liquid.

Multi-analyte fluorescence sensing based on a post-synthetically functionalized two-dimensional Zn-MOF nanosheets featuring excited-state proton transfer process

Covalent post-synthetic modification of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) represents an underexplored but promising avenue for allowing the addition of specific fluorescent recognition elements to produce the novel MOF-based sensory materials with multiple-analyte detection capability. Here, an excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) active sensor 2D-Zn-NS-P was designed and constructed by covalent post-synthetic incorporation of the excited-state tautomeric 2-hydroxypyridine moiety into the ultrasonically exfoliated amino-tagged 2D Zn-MOF nanosheets (2D-Zn-NS). The water-mediated ESPT process facilitates the highly accessible active sites incorporated on the surface of 2D-Zn-NS-P to specifically respond to the presence of water in common organic solvents via fluorescence turn-on behavior, and accurate quantification of trace amount of water in acetonitrile, acetone and ethanol was established using the as-synthesized nanosheet sensor with the detection sensitivity (<0.01% v/v) superior to the conventional Karl Fischer titration. Upon exposure to Fe3+ or Cr2O72−, the intense blue emission of the aqueous colloidal dispersion of 2D-Zn-NS-P was selectively quenched even in the coexistence of common inorganic interferents. The prohibition of the water-mediated ESPT process and local emission, induced by the coordination of ESPT fluorophore with Fe3+ or by Cr2O72− competitively absorbs the excitation energy, was proposed to responsible for the fluorescence turn-off sensing of the respective analytes. The present study offers the attractive prospect to develop the ESPT-based fluorescent MOF nanosheets by covalent post-synthetic modification strategy as multi-functional sensors for detection of target analytes.

Thioether-functionalized covalent organic framework for mercury removal

Post-synthetic modification of COFs via pendant groups or secondary functional groups of the skeleton structure is an important strategy to introduce new properties or enhance existing properties of COFs. Herein, we take advantage of the inherent advantages of COFs and introduce thioether functional groups into a reasonably designed novel COF (TAPA-TFPD) through a post-synthetic modification strategy to create a promising thioether functionalized adsorbent for mercury removal. The thioether functionalized COF material, TAPA-TFPD-S-S, exhibited high mercury removal efficiency from aqueous solution, and the adsorption capacity of Hg2+ was up to 593 mg/g. This efficient mercury removal performance can be attributed its well-defined pore channel sufficient to facilitate Hg2+ diffusion together with high concentration of sulfide chelating sites distributed uniformly throughout the pore wall. The strong interaction between Hg2+ and the thioether groups of TAPA-TFPD-S-S was confirmed by XPS. In addition, TAPA-TFPD-S-S also has the ability to capture Hg0 from the air. The efficient capture of mercury species from aqueous solution and air and the excellent reusability make the prepared thioether-functionalized COFs have great development potential in practical applications. Our work not only demonstrates the utilization of thioether-functionalized COFs in the removal of heavy metal contaminants, but also highlights the exceptional potential of post-synthetic modification strategies in the development of environmental remediation materials.

Ligating Catalytically Active Peptides onto Microporous Polymers: A General Route Toward Specifically-Functional High Surface Area Platforms.

A versatile post-synthetic modification strategy to functionalize a high surface area microporous network (MPN-OH) by bio-orthogonal inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) ligation is presented. While the polymer matrix is modified with a readily accessible norbornene isocyanate (Nor-NCO), a series of functional units presenting the robust asymmetric 1,2,4,5-tetrazine (Tz) allows easy functionalization of the MPN by chemoselective Nor/Tz ligation. A generic route is demonstrated, modulating the internal interfaces by introducing carboxylates, amides or amino acids as well as an oligopeptide d-Pro-Pro-Glu organocatalyst. The MPN-Pz-Peptide construct largely retains the catalytic activity and selectivity in an enantioselective enamine catalysis, demonstrates remarkable availability in different solvents, offers heterogeneous organocatalysis in bulk and shows stability in recycling settings.

Post-Synthetic Modification of an Amino-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework for Highly In Situ Luminescent Detection of Mercury (II).

A sulfur-containing metal-organic framework, donated as UiO-66-NSMe, was prepared by the post-synthetic modification (PSM) of UiO-66-NH2 with 2-(Methylthio)benzaldehyde, and the successful synthesis of PSM was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FT-IR and 1H NMR studies. According to the characteristics of mercury thiophilic, UiO-66-NSMe could be used as a luminescent sensor for Hg2+ detection with a high selectivity and sensitivity (Ksv = 2.5 × 104 M-1; LOD = 20 nM), which could be attributed to the coordination between sulfur sites and Hg2+ based on XPS results. In practical applications, UiO-66-NSMe yielded satisfactory recovery rates (ranging from 96.1% to 99.5%) when it was employed for detecting Hg2+ in spiked environmental samples. Furthermore, UiO-66-NSMe was successfully employed to detect mercury (II) residues with the in situ rapid nondestructive imaging in simulated fresh agricultural products. Thus, this PSM strategy could provide good guidance for environmental protection methodologies in the future.

Fabrication of boronic acid-functionalized covalent organic framework for the selective adsorption of cis-diol-containing compounds

In this work, we report a post-synthetic modification strategy to synthesize a boronic acid-functionalized porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (denoted as BA-COF) via the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Interestingly, BA-COF exhibits excellent selectivity in adsorbing cis-diol-containing compounds (CDC). The selective adsorption mechanism was addressed in detail, which is probably due to the boronate affinity from boronic acid group, hydrophilic interaction from the nitrogen-rich framework as well as “host–guest” interaction from the unique “trap” structure of porphyrin-based COF. The characterized results demonstrated its uniform morphology, large specific surface area, and excellent thermal stability. The adsorption kinetics demonstrated that the adenosine adsorption onto BA-COF conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and belonged to chemisorption. Based on the fitting of adsorption isotherms and thermodynamic analysis, the adenosine adsorption onto BA-COF was monomolecular layer adsorption and was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. Moreover, the reuse performance of BA-COF was investigated through consecutive adsorption–desorption cycle experiments. This work also demonstrates the potential of BA-COF for effective and selective adsorption of CDC in real sample.

Post-Modification of a Robust Covalent Organic Framework for Efficient Sequestration of 99 TcO4 - /ReO4.

Nuclear industry spent fuel reprocessing and some radioactive contamination sites often involve high acidity and salinity environments. Currently developed and reported sorbents in 99 TcO4 - sequestration from the nuclear waste are unstable and show low adsorption efficiency in harsh conditions. To address this issue, we developed a post-synthetic modification strategy by grafting imidazole-based ionic liquids (ILs) onto the backbone of covalent organic framework (COF) via vinyl polymerization. The resultant COF-polyILs sorbent exhibits fast adsorption kinetics (<5 min) and good sorption capacity (388 mg g-1 ) for ReO4 - (a nonradioactive surrogate of 99 TcO4 - ). Outstandingly, COF-polyILs composite shows superior ReO4 - removal even under highly acidic conditions and in the presence of excess competing ions of Hanford low-level radioactive waste stream, benefiting from the stable covalent bonds between the COF and polyILs, mass of imidazole rings, and hydrophobic pores in COF.

Surface graft for effective PdO nanoparticles anchoring on Beta zeolite with outstanding lean methane combustion performance

A post-synthetic modification strategy for anchoring PdO nanoparticles on the Beta zeolite surface and obtaining stable and highly dispersed PdO sites with abundant active Pdn+ (0 < n < 2) species was reported. The modified Beta supported Pd catalyst with a 0.94 wt% Pd loading amount shows (>) 99% methane conversion at 375 °C with a space velocity of 30,000 mL h−1 g−1 and a satisfied long-term (>30 h) CH4 oxidation stability at 340 °C. Such a post-synthetic strategy provides a new way to disperse and stabilize noble metal particles on zeolite support for harsh catalytic process.

Boronic acid-functionalized magnetic porphyrin-based covalent organic framework for selective enrichment of cis-diol-containing nucleosides

In this study, a novel boronic acid-functionalized magnetic porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (COF) with a core-shell structure was designed and synthesized for the selective enrichment and detection of nucleosides. Firstly, brominated porphyrin-based COF was in situ grown on Fe3O4-NH2 nanospheres (denoted as Fe3O4@Br-COF), then a post-synthetic modification strategy was used to introduce boronic acid into the framework via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction to obtain boronic acid functionalized magnetic COF (denoted as Fe3O4@BA-COF). Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling possesses the advantages of mild synthesis conditions, high tolerance to functionalities, and ease of handling and separation, which is considered as a promising candidate for functionalizing COF. It is worth mentioning that the porphyrin-based COF possesses a unique nitrogen-rich skeleton and “trap” structure formed by four pyrrole rings, which can provide hydrogen bond and make it more suitable for trapping analytes than other types of COF. The boronic acid group provides boronate affinity, which enables better selective enrichment of cis-diol-containing nucleoside. The morphology and structure of the prepared Fe3O4@BA-COF was characterized by various methods. Based on the Fe3O4@BA-COF, a facile magnetic solid phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography method (MSPE-HPLC) was used to extract and detect adenosine, guanosine, uridine, and cytidine in urine samples. This work not only provides a mild and feasible post-synthetic modification method for fabrication of boronic acid-functionalized magnetic COF, but also provides an efficient and rapid method to selectively enrich and detect hydrophilic nucleosides.

A Bimetallic Porphyrin Metal Organic Framework as Multifunctional Catalysts for CO2 Cycloaddition and Alkyne Hydration

AbstractHere, a post synthetic modification strategy is presented to prepare multifunctional Bi−MOF−Co by introducing Co atom into the porphyrin units of bismuth‐porphyrin metal organic framework (Bi−MOF). Under milder conditions (0.1 MPa, 80 °C), CO2 cycloaddition is achieved to form cyclic carbonate in 96 % yield catalyzed by Bi−MOF−Co. The recyclability of catalysts is confirmed by five cycle experiments without loss of activity. Moreover, alkyne hydration is also catalyzed by Bi−MOF−Co in 99 % yield. The hydration protocol exhibites excellent functional group compatibility.

Metalation of functionalized benzoquinoline-linked COFs for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction and lithium-sulfur batteries

It is worthwhile to explore and develop multifunctional composites with unique advantages for energy conversion and utilization. Post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategies can endow novel properties to already excellent covalent organic frameworks (COFs). In this study, we prepared a range of COF-based composites via a multi-step PSM strategy. COF-Ph-OH was acquired by demethylation between anhydrous BBr3 and − OMe, and then, M@COF-Ph-OH was further obtained by forming the N − M − O structure. COF-Ph-OH exhibited a 2e−-dominated oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway with high H2O2 selectivity, while M@COF-Ph-OH exhibited a 4e−-dominated ORR pathway with low H2O2 selectivity, which was due to the introduction of a metal salt with a d electron structure that facilitated the acquisition of electrons and changed the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediate (*OOH). It was proven that the d electron structure was effective at regulating the reaction pathway of the electrocatalytic ORR. Moreover, Co@COF-Ph-OH showed better 4e− ORR properties than Fe@COF-Ph-OH and Ni@COF-Ph-OH. In addition, compared with the other sulfur-impregnated COF-based composites examined in this study, S-Co@COF-Ph-OH had a larger initial capacity, a weaker impedance, and a stronger cycling durability in Li-S batteries, which was attributed to the unique porous structure ensuring high sulfur utilization, the loaded cobalt accelerating LiPS electrostatic adsorption and promoting LiPS catalytic conversion, and the benzoquinoline ring structure being ultra-stable. This work offers not only a rational and feasible strategy for the synthesis of multifunctional COF-based composites, but also promotes their application in electrochemistry.

Chemical Conversion of 5-Fluoromethyl- and 5-Difluoromethyl-Uracil Bases in Oligonucleotides Using Postsynthetic Modification Strategy.

This article describes the postsynthetic modification of oligonucleotides (ONs) containing 2'-deoxy-5-fluoromethyluridine (dUCH2F ) and 2'-deoxy-5-difluoromethyluridine (dUCHF2 ). Reactions of fully protected and controlled pore glass (CPG)-attached ONs containing dUCH2F and dUCHF2 in basic solutions result in deprotection of all protecting groups except for the 4,4'-dimethoxytrityl group, cleavage from CPG, and conversion of the fluoromethyl or difluoromethyl groups to afford the corresponding ONs containing 5-substituted 2'-deoxyuridines. Moreover, the difluoromethyl group can be converted to formyl, oxime, or hydrazone via the postsynthetic conversion of protection- and CPG-free ON containing dUCHF2 . © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC. Superhydrophilic Triazine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks via Post-Modification of FeOOH Clusters for Boosted Photocatalytic Performance.

The triazine-based covalent organic frameworks (tCOF), an intriguing subtype of COFs, are expected as highly promising photocatalysts for various photocatalytic applications owing to their fully conjugated structures and nitrogen-rich skeletons. However, the inherent hydrophobicity and fast recombination of photoexcited electron-hole pairs are two main factors hindering the application of tCOF in practical photocatalytic reactions. Here, a post-synthetic modification strategy to fabricate superhydrophilic tCOF-based photocatalysts is demonstrated by in situ growing FeOOH clusters on TaTz COF (TaTz-FeOOH) for efficient photocatalytic oxidation of various organic pollutants. The strong polar FeOOH endows TaTz-FeOOH with good hydrophilic properties. The well-defined heterogeneous interface between FeOOH and TaTz allows the photoelectrons generated by TaTz to be consumed by Fe (III) to transform into Fe (II), synergistically promoting the separation of holes and the generation of free radicals. Compared with the unmodified TaTz, the optimized TaTz-FeOOH (1%) shows excellent photocatalytic performance, where the photocatalytic degrade rate (k) of rhodamine B is increased by about 12 times, and the degradation rate is maintained at 99% after 5 cycles, thus achieving efficient removal of quinolone antibiotics from water. This study provides a new avenue for the development of COF-based hydrophilic functional materials for a wide range of practical applications.
