Differential effects of COVID-19 stressor types on mental health and moderating roles of coping strategies.

Stress exposure often leads to poor mental health, but whether certain types of stressors predict differential levels of mental health symptoms and whether coping differentially moderates these associations remain untested. This study examined whether COVID-19 stressor types (financial-, activity-, and infection-related) differentially predicted subsequent mental health (general distress, posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and positive states of mind) and whether different types of coping moderated these relationships. In April, 2020, questionnaires assessing the impact of COVID-19 on daily life were administered to an adult sample across the US (N = 1,546); 861 (55.7%) of whom completed questionnaires one month later. Nearly all stressor types independently predicted each aspect of mental health. Behavioral disengagement moderated links between both activity- and infection-related stressors and mental health. Seeking emotional social support moderated links between infection-related stressors and both general distress and positive states of mind as well as activity-related stressors and general distress. Positive reappraisal moderated links between financial-related stressors and positive states of mind. Acceptance coping predicted better mental health but was not a significant moderator. Stressor types and coping strategies are important determinants of effects of COVID-19 on mental health; our findings suggest possible screening and intervention implications and directions for future research.

ADRD CAREGIVERS’ ROLE PERCEPTION AND MENTAL HEALTH AFTER LTC-PLACEMENT OF FAMILY MEMBERS

Abstract The Chronic Grief Management Intervention-Video (CGMI-V) clinical trial tested the effects of an 8-week live online intervention for caregivers who placed their family members with ADRD in LTC on caregivers’ mental health outcomes (grief, depression and anxiety symptoms, positive states of mind). This cross-sectional study used baseline data (n=95) from the CGMI-V. We performed hierarchical linear regression to examine the main effects of caregiving role perceptions on caregivers’ levels of grief, depression, anxiety symptoms, and positive states of mind, controlling for potential covariates. At baseline, perceived caregiver role captivity was the most significant factor of outcome variables, followed by feelings of guilt and loss. Increased feelings of role captivity were linked to sum scores of grief as measured with the Marwit-Meuser Caregiver Grief Inventory. These findings indicate that increased feelings of role captivity were associated with increased feelings of loss and loss of interpersonal connections. Higher levels of perceived role captivity were associated with more depressive and anxiety symptoms. Caregivers with lower levels of perceived role captivity had higher levels of positive states of mind. The findings confirmed the need for interventions targeting caregivers’ feelings of role captivity, loss, and guilt related to caregiving obligations post-LTC placement of family members with ADRD to reduce caregivers’ grief, depression, and anxiety and to increase their positive states of mind. These baseline findings are preliminary. Future presentations will report the effects of the CGMI-V intervention on caregivers’ grief and mental health, including weeks 8 and 24 follow-up data.

P151: A Chronic Grief Management-Intervention-Video: A Profile of the Sample

Enrollment closed in November, 2022. The study remains open for follow-up only. The final sample size is 99 participants (Intervention=50; Control=49) recruited from across 14 states in the USA.Participant Characteristics: There were no significant differences in demographics between participants in both conditions. The sample was predominantly Caucasian and female with over two thirds being highly educated, adult children. The average caregiver age was 62.06 (SD=10.20) for those in the CGMI-V condition and 58.18 (SD=11.27) respectively, for those in the control condition. Similarly, there were no significant differences in care recipient demographics. The sample was predominantly Caucasian and female. Over one third of care recipients across both conditions were diagnosed with dementia within the past four years of interviewing. Further analyses are pending.Conclusions:Sample characteristics illuminate similarities across dementia caregivers who placed family members with dementia in long-term facilities across 14 states in the USA. These findings may inform future grief interventions.

Living with a traumatized partner: Dyadic approach to well-being of war-affected married couples.

Personal well-being is a positive state of mind that involves the whole life experience. Croatian War of Independence has certainly been a life-changing experience for many Croatian families, especially those whose members were actively involved. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of anxiety and depression symptoms on personal and partner's well-being in couples with and without traumatic war experiences. One hundred and ninety-four participants were included in this study and divided into three groups: war veterans without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their wives (34 dyads), war veterans with PTSD and their wives (33 dyads), and nonveteran couples (30 dyads). All completed Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, Personal Well-Being Index, and reported information about war-related experience and mental health diagnosis. We applied two Actor-Partner Interdependence Models with anxiety and depression as predictors and personal well-being as outcome. Our most interesting finding revealed that war veterans with PTSD and their wives demonstrate specific pattern of interaction: significant partner effect showed that husbands' higher anxiety and depression symptoms reduced wives' personal well-being. We also found significant actor effects, showing that symptoms of depression and anxiety have negative effects on personal well-being. It seems that the personal well-being of wives of war veterans with PTSD is doubly burdened by their own and their husbands' emotional state. In the clinical context, this might mean that special attention should be paid to veterans' wives, even when the husband who is suffering from PTSD is the one who primarily seeks professional help. Perceptions about positive mental health among university students from Southern India: An occupational perspective

Introduction: Positive mental health (PMH) is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life. Lack of it may lead to increased negative thoughts and the use of unhealthy coping mechanisms. This study aimed to explore university students’ perceptions of PMH from an occupational perspective. Method: Six online focus groups with participants recruited through purposive sampling were conducted among university students in southern India. A semi-structured interview guide facilitated the data collection. Thematic analysis was done for the transcribed data. Results: Two themes emerged from the data: “No health without mental health” and “action plan for mental health.” The findings reflected participants’ understanding of mental health and its relation to socio-emotional wellbeing, positive state of mind, and productivity. They described the use of various personal strategies including certain occupations for mental health promotion. Conclusion: The findings suggest that students were mindful of the significance of the presence or absence of PMH. They valued the role of daily habits and routines in maintaining PMH. Future intervention programs for PMH can be developed by integrating an occupational perspective.

Correlates of Psychological Well-Being Among First-Year Medical Students: An Exploratory Study

ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: The literature is limited on correlates of psychological well-being among Indian medical undergraduates. The study aimed to assess the psychological well-being, life satisfaction, self-efficacy, positive state of mind, and emotions among first-year medical undergraduates. Materials and Methods: It was a cross-sectional study assessing 121 first-year medical undergraduate students. Psychological well-being scale, satisfaction with life scale, general self-efficacy scale, positive state of mind scale, and positive and negative affect schedule revised version were used. Results: The majority of medical undergraduate students were satisfied with the life. Their life satisfaction was positively associated with general self-efficacy, positive state of mind, and positive affect score. These indicators were negatively associated with negative affect score. Male students had significantly greater self-efficacy. Conclusion: Medical students’ life satisfaction was found to be positively associated with other wellness indicators. Resilience-based positive psychology interventions should be implemented in medical colleges to enhance psychological well-being.

EEG Monitored Guided Meditation for Weight Loss Proving the Materializing Power of Subconscious Mind – Case Report

BACKGROUND: Our study discusses the use of hypnosis as a tool to regulate the subconscious mind, with some researchers viewing it as a form of top-down cognition. The aim of the study was to prove the connection between the subconscious mind and body weight by measuring weight loss caused by hypnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: The study involved a 25-year-old woman with a BMI of 48.8 kg/m2, who underwent two sessions of guided meditation and was monitored with EEG. Results showed a significant reduction in body weight after 2 weeks, and changes in EEG activity were observed, indicating better vigilance, self-esteem, and a positive state of mind. CONCLUSION: The study supports the hypothesis that the subconscious mind has materializing power, and the results suggest that turning bad habits into healthy activities and food preferences is related to subconscious productivity. The study could have a positive impact on the patient’s lifestyle.

The Relationship between Work-Family Conflict, Neuroticism with Work Engagement, and Burnout in Teachers

This study aims to determine the relationship between Work-Family Conflict, Neuroticism with Work Engagement, and Burnout in teachers. Work-family conflict is a conflict between roles in work and family. The neurotic personality trait has personality traits that are easily anxious, temperamental, self-pitiful, emotional, prone to stress, and sensitive to criticism. Work engagement is a positive state of mind, while burnout is psychological fatigue that arises due to conflict or pressure at work. A purposive sampling technique was used in this study. The respondents of this study consisted of 108 high school teachers. The results of this study indicate that work-family conflict and neurotic personality have a negative relationship with work engagement. This study found that there was no relationship between work-family conflict and burnout. Furthermore, no relationship was found between neuroticism and burnout in high school teachers.

Transformational Leadership How its Effect Work-Life Balance and Employee Engagement

Aims: The previous survey showed that employee engagement in Indonesia is shallow. This study attempts to test the effect of transformational leadership on work-life balance and employee engagement.
 Study Design / Methodology: Data was obtained by distributing questionnaires to 107 bank employees in Bandarlampung, Indonesia. The characteristics of respondents show that males (57.9%) are higher than females (42.1%). Data analysis was performed using Smart PLS.
 Results: The analysis results support the hypothesis that transformational leadership positively affects work-life balance and employee engagement.
 Conclusion: This finding shows that most of the banking leaders in Bandar Lampung apply transformational leadership. Transformational leadership will enhance work-life balance and employee engagement. This research implies that the leader stimulates and inspires his followers to achieve extraordinary results and develop his capacity, the more positive state of mind, satisfaction, and employee engagement with the organization will be. Leaders with a transformational are also able to encourage employee work-life balance.

Self-compassion for palliative care personnel – the effect of specific training

Self-compassion is a construct with real implication in case of palliative care. Self-compassion represents a personal resource and support for self-care. The personnel who provide care in the palliative settings can benefit from protective factors and self-compassion, but at the same time they feel the pressure of a major mental and physical burden. The aim of this study was to assess self-compassion in relation with palliative care personnel, care workers from hospice, oncology area and relatives of palliative care patients. The design of the study includes an evaluation of the self-compassion before and after a 90-minute training session done on a group of people from palliative care. The level of self-compassion was assessed with the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), with 26 items, proposed by Kristin Neff. The present study indicates that personnel in palliative care can benefit from special training in order to increase the level of self-compassion and at the same time to reduce the negative dimension of self-judgement, isolation and overidentification which interferes with the positive state of mind and health.

Does perceived post-traumatic growth predict better psychological adjustment during the COVID-19 pandemic? Results from a national longitudinal survey in the USA

Perceiving that one has grown in positive ways following highly stressful experiences (perceived posttraumatic growth; PPTG) is common and sometimes--but not always--related to psychological wellbeing. However, PPTG is typically studied cross-sectionally and well after the stressful experience has passed; how PPTG might relate to wellbeing over time in an unprecedented, ongoing worldwide disaster such as the COVID-19 pandemic remains unknown. Thus, the current study sought to answer whether, in the midst of the pandemic, PPTG relates to subsequent wellbeing, broadly defined. Participants were N = 1544 MTurk workers who completed a five-wave (T1-T5) six-month longitudinal study. Current analyses focused on T2-T5 (ns = 860–712). At each time point, participants completed self-report measures of PPTG and wellbeing (depression, anxiety, stress, positive states of mind, alcohol use, posttraumatic stress). In cross-lagged panel models, PPTG was largely unrelated to subsequent wellbeing. Somewhat more evidence was found that increasing distress led to increases in PPTG, suggesting perceptions of growth may serve as a coping mechanism. PPTG does not appear to benefit adjustment to the COVID-19 pandemic and may simply reflect efforts to manage distress.

Exploring the Relationship between Student Engagement and Burnout Syndrome among Undergraduate Medical Students at the Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University (A Cross-Sectional Analytical Study)

Background: Burnout is a psychological syndrome that is considered an amalgamation of exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. It is well known that mental well-being of medical students is heavily affected. Student engagement can be defined as a positive state of mind in terms of studying, where the student tends to be more determined. Engaged students are more resilient to academic stress with a sense of well-being and less feeling of burn out in the future. Aim: The study aims at assessing the prevalence of burnout syndrome among undergraduate medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University (FOM-SCU) and to explore the relationship between student engagement and burnout levels. Subjects and Methods: 300 students from all study years participated in the study. The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale–Student Survey (UWES–S) was used to assess the level of student engagement while the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Student Survey (MBI–SS) was used to gauge the extent of burnout syndrome among medical students. Results: According to our results, 77.3% of the total study population had two-dimensional burnout and 61.7% of them had three-dimensional burnout. Moreover, 49.7% of the total study population had average student engagement level with the highest prevalence in year three with 54.4%. Overall, student engagement levels were moderately negatively correlated with burnout levels. Conclusion: Most of the study population had high levels of burnout. Nearly half of them considered themselves averagely engaged in their studies. Student engagement levels were moderately negatively correlated with burnout levels, denoting the importance of enhancing engagement and preventing burnout.

Komunikasi Terapeutik Keluarga Muslim di Bandung:

Therapeutic communication basically aims to develop oneself (patient) and state of mind in order to lead to be more positive. This article is a qualitative research report that examines the role of narrative interaction and goodly model of parents as a form of therapeutic communication within Muslim families. The results have showed that storytelling and exemplary techniques in the sense of pleasant interpersonal communication can be used to foster the healing process and create a healthy lifestyle in the family. These techniques can keep children in a more positive state of mind, including through giving suggestions and strengthening Islamic spiritual values. This can be conducted by a clear understanding regarding the character of the child's communication, followed by seting the narrative technique and goodly model that parents must take.

Creating a measure to operationalize engaged well-being at work

BackgroundMental well-being and work engagement are both desirable, positive states of mind that help employees to better function in the workplace. While occupational researchers have argued in favor of considering both states concurrently, it is less clear how this might be translated to provide an instrument characterizing the workforce accordingly. The present study describes empirical efforts to operationalize a construct called engaged well-being.MethodsWe used employee-level data (n = 13,538) from three waves of the German linked personnel panel (LPP; 2012–2017). Exploratory factor analysis and a combination of hierarchical and non-hierarchical cluster analyses linked with within-sum-of-squares statistics were used to identify distinct profiles describing mental well-being and work engagement concurrently. These profiles were then used as the basis to identify cut-offs to create replicable categories of engaged well-being. Using the longitudinal data from a subgroup providing data across more than one wave, we observed whether the newly constructed indicator changed over time.ResultsThe exploratory factor analysis suggested that both states were two distinct factors. Cluster analysis linked with within-sum-of-squares statistics suggested a four-cluster solution: engaged well-being (46.9%), disengaged well-being (27.5%), engaged strain (8.8%), and disengaged strain (16.8%). One cut-off for each state was identified to replicate the cluster solution. Across observation periods, we could observe changes in engaged well-being.ConclusionsOur measure of engaged well-being can be used to simultaneously characterize a workforce’s mental well-being and work engagement. Changes in this measure over time suggest its potential utility in organizational interventions. Future studies are needed to further explore both the antecedents, correlates, and potential effects of engaged well-being.

This study examined the satisfaction of leisure activities of Chinese workers in various dimensions to see if the satisfaction factors increase optimism and further affect job-related self-determination. As the interest in positive psychology has increased recently, organizations are also paying attention to the role of worker’s positive state of mind, such as optimism. According to the results, several dimensions of leisure satisfaction increased optimism, thereby enhancing autonomy and relatedness of self-determination.

Investigating the effect of social support, social capital, and coping on the positive state of mind of Iranian older people with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

BACKGROUND:Social resources help to adapt to stress and might positively affect the well-being of individuals with severe conditions like human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). The present study investigates the effect of social support, social capital, and coping in a positive state of mind of Iranian older people with HIV/AIDS.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This cross-sectional study was conducted on 160 older people with HIV referred to AIDS clinics in Tehran in 2019. Samples were randomly selected from patients aged 50 years and older. Data were collected using a questionnaire, a positive state of mind, social capital, coping, social support, and a checklist of demographical variables. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 21.RESULTS:A significant positive correlation was found between social support, social capital, coping, education, and a positive state of mind. A significant negative correlation was also found between age, several chronic diseases of the patient, and a positive state of mind. The linear regression results showed that social support, social capital, coping, and education improved the positive state of mind.CONCLUSIONS:Based on our findings, we believe that social and psychological interventions effectively enhance patients' positive state of mind with HIV and ultimately, improve their quality of life.

The Dynamics of Hope in Unkrich and Molina’s Coco

This study analyzes how the characters in Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina’s animated film Coco, mainly Mamá Imelda, Héctor, and Miguel, manage their emotional responses when they are facing loss, bereavement, or other significant changes in their lives. The study uses Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s five-stage model of grief to analyze how these characters go through the grieving process. Moreover, in order to suggest how those who are grieving can enter into positive states of mind, the study expands on Kübler-Ross’s original model by incorporating a positive mindset of hope. In dialogue with Unkrich and Molina’s film, the study uses Kübler-Ross’s ideas to explore coping mechanisms that can help manage difficult times in life, while also suggesting the benefits of maintaining a positive mindset through hope.

Metacognitive Beliefs, Positive States of Mind, and Emotional Approach Coping as the Predictors of Medical Compliance in Patients with Cancer

Background: Medical compliance plays an essential role in the control of cancer and psychological factors such as metacognitive beliefs, positive psychology, and coping styles which are among the predictors of medical compliance. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine how much metacognitive beliefs, positive states of mind, and emotional approach coping can predict medical compliance in patients with breast cancer. Methods: This was a descriptive correlational study. By available sampling method, 154 women with breast cancer who were medically treated and had inclusion criteria, responded to the Morisky Medication Adherence scale (MMAS), Metacognitive Beliefs questionnaire (MCBQ), Positive states of mind (PSOM) scale, and emotional approach coping (EAC) scale. Stepwise multiple regression analysis by SPSS statistics version 24 was applied for data analysis. Results: There was a significant correlation between positive states of mind and metacognitive beliefs and between emotional approach coping with medical compliance (P < 0.05). Positive states of mind and metacognitive beliefs were the best predictors of medical compliance (P < 0.001), while the emotional approach coping could not predict medical compliance. Results also showed that positive states of mind (β = 0. 51) have the greatest predictive power to medical compliance, and the variable of emotional approach coping is not effective in predicting. Conclusions: Research findings suggest that positive states of mind and orientation toward metacognitive beliefs can control anxiety among patients and predict medical compliance in patients with breast cancer but research about emotional approach coping needs to more investigation.

THE BENEFITS OF LIFE SKILLS TRAINING: ANALYSIS BASED ON GENDER

The objective of the study was to test the effects of life skill training on emotional distress based on gender differences. The sampling was based on 160 adolescent students who participated in this study. These students were enrolled in various classes in city of Kabul, Afghanistan. The study was based on experiment design where we administered life skill training on experimental group and control group was excluded from such life skill training. The findings of the study based on pre and post test administered on both groups shows that as individuals received the life skill training, it influenced positively on their positive state of mind and reduced negative emotions.
