Mechanisms of Media Persuasion and Positive Internet Word-of-Mouth Driving Green Purchasing Behavior: Evidence from China

As environmental issues intensify, sustainability development is becoming mainstream, with environmental topics gaining increasing attention in the media and online. Shifting consumer behavior in China toward green purchasing is crucial for mitigating environmental pollution and achieving sustainable, low-carbon consumption. This study constructed a theoretical model combining media persuasion (MP) and positive internet word-of-mouth (PIM) with green purchasing behavior (GPB), based on the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR) and persuasion theories, to explore consumer responses to environmental information campaigns. A total of 357 valid samples were collected through an online questionnaire survey and subjected to analysis using the structural equation model (SEM). The results indicate that MP, PIM, and environmental attitude (EA) significantly influence GPB. Specifically, EA partially mediates the relationship between MP, PIM, and GPB, while environmental knowledge (EK) negatively moderates the relationship between independent variables and EA. Additionally, EK moderates the mediating effect of EA. The findings highlight that the effective implementation of MPs and PIMs can facilitate the creation of positive EA, which stimulates consumer GPB. This is essential for promoting sustainable consumption. This research contributes to sustainability by providing insights and practical suggestions for developing green marketing strategies that support environmental goals.

Exploring Environmental Influences on Responsible Tourism: The Role of Attitudes and Behaviour

In this study, we aim to explore the relationship between various independent variables, namely environmental attitude, environmental responsible behaviour, sustainability concern, and perceived behaviour control, and their influence on responsible tourism attitude. We hypothesize that individuals with a positive environmental attitude, engaged in responsible behaviour on environment, and displaying a high level of sustainability concern will exhibit a stronger responsible tourism attitude. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of responsible tourism attitude on responsible tourism intention. By conducting surveys and analysing the data collected, we hope to shed light on the factors that shape individuals' attitudes towards responsible tourism. This research is crucial in understanding how individuals' beliefs, behaviours, and concerns about the environment contribute to their attitudes towards responsible tourism. Ultimately, the findings of this study can inform the development of strategies and interventions aimed at promoting responsible tourism practices and fostering sustainable travel behaviours.

Assessing students’ environmental literacy on sustainability through Knowledge -Attitude-Practice (K-A-P) approach in the Ecosystem Discovery Journey (EDJ) Programme

A successful transition towards sustainability in the university context requires incorporation of three important aspects based on knowledge, beliefs, values and actions among all stakeholders, particularly students, through environmental education and literacy. Hence, this study aims to assess the level of environmental literacy, encompassing knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of undergraduate students enrolled in the LMCP1522: Ecosystem Discovery Journey (EDJ) course in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. A quantitative study was conducted, involving a survey and structured questionnaires completed by 108 students, also known as Eco-volunteers (Ekorelawan). The collected data were analysed by applying the descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings showed a high level of environmental knowledge (94.4%), positive environmental attitude (56.5%) and fair/moderate environmental practice (69.5%) among students. The study also found positive and significant relationships between environmental knowledge, attitude and practice among the students through Spearman correlation test. The analysis discovered that students acquired environmental knowledge through electronic media, particularly social media as their primary source. The findings of the study illustrated a general depiction of environmental literacy level among students and provided general direction for policy discussion with respect to environmental education in Malaysian higher education institutions.

From extra to Extraordinary: An academic and practical exploration of Extraordinary (E) Pro Environmental Behavior (PEB) in the hotel industry

Over the past decades, organizations have become increasingly involved with environmental concerns to mitigate the negative consequences of their actions on the community. The hospitality industry, and especially hotels, aware of its effects, has taken steps to increase positive environmental behavior, attitudes, and initiatives, to lessen the harm to the greater community in which they are located. Encouraging employees in their pro-environmental behavior (PEB) within the organization is a long-standing initiative and well-cited in the literature. In this paper, we posit the need to extend the literature to an “extraordinary” (E) version of PEB i.e. extraordinary pro-environmental behavior via employee engagement. Our study examines traditional PEB through a systematic literature review deriving from eleven top-ranked journals for 79 articles, identifying key concepts through Leximancer. In addition, two workshops with international hospitality professionals were held to complement findings from the literature. Our contribution lies in developing a model that academics and hotel stakeholders can use to move beyond PEB to our proposition of E-PEB as well as address the practitioner-academia gap by comparing what the literature posits with the reality of the hotel industry.

UNDERSTANDING GREEN MARKETING STRATEGIES IN SOCIAL ENTERPRISES AND RESPONSIBLE PURCHASE BEHAVIOUR: A LITERATURE REVIEW

This study seeks to provide literature on the different green marketing strategies that social enterprises use to attract responsible purchase behaviour based on a Literature Review. The method of this study involves extracting data (articles) from three prominent databases (Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar) subscribed by UiTM. Then, research is carried out qualitatively by reading and analysing 21 journal articles to understand concepts, opinions and experiences from previous studies. All articles are summarized in a table, namely journal articles and authors and they are put under their own heading based on article categorization such as social enterprises, green marketing strategy, and responsible consumer purchase behaviour. A few determinants of green marketing strategies are identified and analysed, namely, creating eco-conscious brand image, fostering positive customer environmental attitudes, innovating eco-friendly packaging, networking with other green enterprises and a general category of other influential factors. The results indicate that green marketing strategies in social enterprises are proven effective to attract responsible purchase behaviour. The findings contribute to social entrepreneurship and green marketing literature in terms of effectiveness to attract responsible purchase behaviour. Future research suggestions are provided based on the findings.

Kazakhstani high school students’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, awareness and concern

This study aims to investigate Kazakhstani high school students’ environmental knowledge, attitude toward the environment, environmental awareness, and environmental concern, and to present the effect of various extracurricular activities on high school students’ knowledge, attitude, awareness, and concern. We surveyed 124 students at various grade levels. Results indicated that Kazakhstani students did not have a strong environmental knowledge base and their awareness of environmental issues is not strong at all, but they had a strong positive environmental attitude. There was no significant relationship between knowledge, attitude, and awareness based on grades in biology, chemistry, physics, math, and geography. Gender did not influence students’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, and awareness but year in school did for environmental knowledge. Kazakhstani students were most concerned about air pollution, pollution of rivers and seas, and flooding, and they were the least concerned with overpopulation, radioactive waste, extinction of species, and climate change. Extracurricular activities did prove useful with increasing students’ knowledge and awareness about environmental challenges but did not impact their environmental attitude. Our results imply that what is being taught about the environment in Kazakhstani schools is not substantial enough. Educators may modify the curriculum to better address environmental issues in the classroom and add more content and activities.

Exploring the Effect of Policies on Environmental Pollution Liability Insurance in China’s Highly Polluting Industries: Applying Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior

ABSTRACT This paper investigates the effects of different types of government policies related to environmental pollution liability insurance (EPLI) and how these policies promote the demand for EPLI of polluting enterprises. Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), we establish a research framework to analyze the effects and mechanisms of the three different policies (mandatory, incentive, and monitoring policies). Our empirical results suggest that the mandatory and monitoring policies can effectively promote companies to buy insurance, but the incentive policies have no significant impact on the insurance demand overall. Furthermore, companies with more positive environmental attitudes are not sensitive to mandatory policies. Although the overall effect of incentive policies is not significant, they have a significant positive impact on the EPLI demand of non-state-owned companies. The monitoring policies prompt enterprises to purchase insurance by strengthening information disclosure and compliant production.

Examination of Preschool Teachers' Environmental Attitudes in Terms of Different Variables

This study investigated the environmental attitudes of preschool teachers in relation to various factors including their educational background, city of residence, age, seniority, and gender. The findings reiterate the importance of environmental education in shaping positive environmental attitudes, as teachers with a robust environmental education background showcased more favorable views on the environment. Conversely, factors like place of residence, age, and seniority did not significantly influence environmental attitudes. The results also indicate that there was no differentiation in environmental attitudes based on gender. These findings emphasize the importance of instilling a comprehensive environmental education for educators, who play a pivotal role in shaping the environmental perceptions of the younger generation. Despite its invaluable insights, the study is limited by its geographical scope and potential omission of influential variables. Future research should expand its parameters and delve into deeper qualitative inquiries.

Can Coral Reef Restoration Programmes Facilitate Changes in Environmental Attitudes? A Case Study on a Rural Fisher Community in North Bali, Indonesia

There is currently limited research assessing the ecological potential of coral restoration programmes of habitat enhancement and restoration of benthic and mobile populations for influencing the attitudes (and subsequent behaviours) of the communities where they are based. Our qualitative study investigated the impact of a coral reef restoration programmes on local environmental attitudes in a rural fishing community in north Bali, Indonesia. We conducted semi-structured interviews with individuals and multi-stakeholder focus groups (n = 31) in Tianyar Village, where the NGO ‘North Bali Reef Conservation’ (‘Yowana Bhakti Segara’) was based. Our results highlight several factors that influenced environmental behaviours, including perceived value of coral reefs (e.g.,changes in fishing yield), drivers of support for coral reef restoration (e.g., local leaders’ influence) and barriers to coral reef restoration support (e.g., lack of investment). Overall, our data indicate that the restoration programme has influenced positive environmental attitudes within the community through improvements in waste management, increased support for restoration work, and the establishment of new environmental regulations. Based on our results, we make five recommendations: (1) continuing environmental education within the community, (2) strengthening regulations and improving enforcement, (3) increasing financial and logistical support for waste management and ecotourism, (4) continuing the construction and deployment of artificial reefs, ensuring ‘best practice’ recommendations are followed, and (5) utilising the influence of local leaders to create positive environmental behaviours.

A Comparative Analysis of Karplus Learning Cycle Model and Ausubel Meaningful Learning Model on Children's Environmental Pollution Cognition

Environmental education aims to raise individuals who have the necessary environmental knowledge, positive environmental attitudes, and active participation in the solution of environmental problems. It is necessary to use an effective teaching model in environmental education. The study aims comparing the academic success of secondary school students in teaching environmental problems in the light of Karplus's learning cycle model (Inquiry) and Ausubel's meaningful learning model (Direct) in terms of metropolitan-centred students (experimental group) and rural-centred students (control group). In addition, the important thing in questioning is to reveal the relationship of prior knowledge with open-ended questions asked by metropolitan-centred students. In this study, 164 5th-grade students' thoughts on environmental problems, their level of producing solutions, and their academic achievements were examined. A mixed design was used in the research. A case study, which was one of the research methods, was used for qualitative data, and an independent sample t-tests and paired sample t-tests were used for quantitative data. During the data collection process, the experimental and control groups were given a pre-test before the application, then news videos containing environmental problems were watched by the experimental group, while the control group was taught with universal visuals. At the end of the lesson, the same achievement test was applied to both groups as a post-test and the change was examined. The whole application took a total of 8 lesson hours for both groups. As a result of the study, a statistically significant difference was found between the achievements of the experimental group students and the success of the control group students. In the qualitative data of the experimental group students, it was observed that they mostly commented on water pollution, air pollution, and forest destruction. In addition, the problems that individuals perceived least correctly were the visual pollution, noise pollution, and light pollution, accepted as the normality of big city life intertwined with daily life. It is clear that student-centred teaching models, like the Karpus Learning Cycle model will further increase the learning and student’s awareness.

Investigating determinants of pro-environmental behaviors amongst UAE university students through Q-methodology

Numerous high-tech advancements have established a healthy environment, reduced consumer consumption of non-renewable resources, and reduced the total ecological impact on the environment. Despite this technology, many people still do not have sustainable behavior ingrained in them. Environmental sustainability is threatened by human behaviors, and environmental choices made by individuals are correlated with pro-environmental behaviors. This research focuses on the relationship between people and the environment, the difficulties that have arisen as a result, and the factors that influence university students' pro-environmental behaviors. It explores the factors influencing university students in the United Arab Emirates to have positive environmental attitudes and behaviors using the Q methodology. The results elucidate several discourses, including connections between knowledge and attitude, the importance of formal and informal education, and necessary economic policies and incentives. The results of this research are consistent with those of other recent studies that place more emphasis on attitude than motivation when it comes to changing behavior towards the environment.

Mediating Role of Environmental Attitude Between Consumers’ Satisfaction and Repeat Purchase of Eco-friendly Petrol in Indonesia

Indonesia has serious air pollution. The joint effort between the Indonesian government and PT. To minimise pollution problems, Pertamina has introduced eco-friendly petrol known as Pertamax RON 92, targeted at fourwheel vehicle consumers. This study investigates whether environmental attitude mediates consumers' satisfaction and repeat purchase behaviour in consuming Pertamax. A survey of 469 Pertamax consumers in Jakarta petrol stations confirmed that consumers' satisfaction and repeat purchase behaviour are mediated by environmental attitude. The tests carried out between satisfaction and attitude, perspective, repeat purchase, and satisfaction and repeat purchase also found significant relationships between the variables. The results imply the critical roles played by three variables as displayed from the direct and indirect connections. In other words, consumers purchased Pertamax RON 92 because they are satisfied and have a positive environmental attitude. For future promotion, the focus can be emphasised on the quality of eco-friendly petrol. It influences consumers’ satisfaction and continuous education to enhance consumers' positive attitudes toward the environment. This research describes a caring attitude towards the environment stimulated by consumer satisfaction in consuming green innovative products, which has become a highlight of environmental issues in various parts of the world.

Psychological barriers moderate the attitude-behavior gap for climate change.

Behavioral change has been increasingly recognized as a means for combating climate change. However, being concerned about climate problems and knowing the importance of individual actions in mitigating them is not enough for greater adherence to a more sustainable lifestyle. Psychological barriers such as (1) finding change unnecessary; (2) conflicting goals; (3) interpersonal relationships; (4) lack of knowledge; and (5) tokenism have been proposed as an explanation for the gap between environmental attitudes and actions. Yet, so far, this hypothesis has remained untested. This study aimed to assess if psychological barriers moderate the association between environmental attitudes and climate action. A sample of Portuguese individuals (N = 937) responded to a survey measuring climate change beliefs and environmental concerns as an index of environmental attitudes, a scale of self-reported frequency of environmental action, and finally, the dragons of inaction psychological barrier scale. Our participants revealed generally elevated positive environmental attitudes. These attitudes were positively and moderately related to greater self-reported frequency of environmental action in areas such as reusing materials, reduced consumption of animal products, water and energy saving, and airplane use, but not driving less. Critically, the association between attitudes and behavior was negatively moderated by psychological barriers for the reuse, food, and saving domains, but not for driving or flying. In conclusion, our results corroborate the assumption that psychological barriers can partly explain the attitude-behavior gap in the climate action domain.

Intention to Visit Sustainable Tourism Destination After Covid 19 Pandemic

This paper aims to investigate the antecedents of environmental attitude and its influence on intention to visit sustainable tourism destination, which is moderated by individual green value. Purposive sampling method was used to collect the data from 370 respondents. The data was analysed using structural equation model. Out of the four antecedents, environmental identity and enjoyment of nature positively influence environmental attitude that leads to intention to visit. Results also showed that individual green value moderates the influence of environmental attitude on intention to visit sustainable tourism destination. This research suggests sustainable tourism marketers to create message that form positive environmental attitude. This study offers a conceptual model that focusing on environmental attitude as a key variable that is widely proven to be the best predictor of intention.

Effects of Curriculum on Environmental Attitudes: A Comparative Analysis of Environmental and Non-Environmental Disciplines

To satisfy their ever-increasing needs, humans are constantly exerting excessive pressure upon the environment, while now more than ever, the adoption of new development practices to halt environmental degradation is becoming necessary. Graduates from all disciplines should have environmental awareness, because their decisions as future professionals may affect the environment. If, however, we assume that environmental science graduates possess environmental knowledge, it is worth investigating whether this knowledge affects their environmental attitudes. Hence, the aim of this study is to compare the environmental attitudes of students attending environmental and non-environmental studies. To this end, a comparative study on environmental attitudes was conducted between students majoring in forestry and students majoring in literature studies at one of the largest universities in Greece. That is, the environmental attitudes of students whose discipline was closely related to the environment were compared to the attitudes of students whose discipline was unrelated to the environment. The results showed that students from both disciplines had positive environmental attitudes, but forestry students exhibited a discernibly higher level of environmental awareness, which can be ascribed to their participation in environmentally relevant courses. The insights gains from this study could be particularly useful to education policymakers and curriculum practitioners, since they provide evidence for the potential of curriculum content to shape pro-environmental attitudes.

Pro-Environmental Behavior: Examining the Role of Ecological Value Cognition, Environmental Attitude, and Place Attachment among Rural Farmers in China.

Studies on the factors that influence farmers' pro-environmental behavior could promote environmental management in rural areas. Jinan of China was selected as the case study area in this study. A structural equation model and multiple hierarchical regression analysis were applied to analyze the influence mechanism of ecological value cognition on pro-environmental behavior. Environmental attitudes were set as the mediating variable and place attachment was selected as the moderating variable. The results showed that (1) ecological value cognition exhibited a positive influence on pro-environmental behavior in both direct and indirect ways. The indirect influence was mediated by environmental attitude. (2) Place identity and place dependence showed a positive direct influence on pro-environmental behavior. (3) It is suggested that in order to improve pro-environmental behavior, enhancing ecological value cognition, cultivating farmers' positive environmental attitude, increasing farmers' place attachment, and releasing reward and punishment measures are good strategies. The findings in this study are important to the improvement of the rural ecological environment and the quality of life of farmers. Meanwhile, the findings shed light on the construction process of ecological civilization and the improvement of public welfare.

Perception of Recycled Plastics for Improved Consumer Acceptance through Self-Reported and Physiological Measures

This article aims to provide in-depth insight into how consumers perceive recycled materials in comparison with natural raw materials at both the perceptual and attitudinal levels. To this end, we combined classic self-reported measures of sensory aspects, preferences, environmental attitudes, and consumption habits together with physiological measures of cognitive-emotional processing. Three different materials-two recycled materials, M2 and M3, and one raw material, M1-were chosen for inspection through three different sensory conditions, which we refer to as channels -visual, tactile, and visuo-tactile. The assignation of materials to sensory channels was counterbalanced so that each participant evaluated only one of the materials per channel. Although participants in general were not very accurate in discriminating between the materials, self-reported sensory evaluations showed that M3 (a recycled material that is made to look non-recycled), was clearly less liked. Meanwhile, the psychophysiological analyses revealed higher levels of electrodermal activity for the tactile evaluations of both recycled materials (M2 and M3). Finally, the results from the attitudes and habits evaluations indicate that the participants had positive environmental attitudes yet poor consumption habits. Altogether, these results suggest that some sensorial properties differ between recycled materials and natural raw materials and that there is a chance to improve and implement new consumption habits. The implications of these results are further discussed both in terms of suggestions for designers and methodological recommendations for researchers.

Organic food consumption and contextual factors: An attitude–behavior–context perspective

AbstractThis study is grounded within the theoretical framework of attitude–behavior–context. The study examines how perceived health risk shapes both health and environmental attitudes, leading to organic food consumption. Further, we also assess the role of perceived effectiveness and green trust in moderating the proposed relationships. The data were collected from 461 consumers through Amazon Mechanical Turk platform. Our findings indicate that consumers' perception of health risk plays a significant role in developing positive environmental and health attitudes. Consequently, this leads consumers to adopt organic food. Further, this study confirms that there is an attitude–behavior gap, as both environmental and health attitudes seem to have a weak Cohen f2 effect on organic food consumption. Though perceived effectiveness moderates the relationship of organic food consumption with perceived health risk and attitude, green trust does not bridge the attitude–behavior gap. This study may help organic food marketers, policy‐makers, and retailers bridge the consumers' attitude–behavior gap.
