Gravel Bed Hydroponic Systems Used for Secondary and Tertiary Treatment of Sewage Effluent

ABSTRACTGravel bed hydroponic (GBH) systems planted withemergent hydrophytes, such as Phragmites australis (the common reed), treat domestic sewage effluents to acceptable environmental standards in an economic and efficient manner. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia, and coliform bacteria can be reduced by over 90% and dissolved oxygen (DO) substantially increased. In temperate zones, such as Europe, GBH systems can be used to replace conventional small rural treatment works, and for tertiary treatment of final effluents. In tropical and arid zones, GBH systems can provide locally‐managed, cost‐effective alternatives to hightechnology systems which are inappropriate for use in developing countries. Portsmouth Polytechnic reed‐bed sewage treatment GBH projects in the UK and Egypt are discussed and current progress is assessed.

Adaptive modulation as a fade countermeasure. An olympus experiment

AbstractWith the launch of the European Space Agency's Olympus‐1 satellite, a whole new era of communication experiments in the 20/30 GHz bands will start. Of particular interest will be those experiments concerned with fade countermeasures for the very small aperture terminals (VSATs). Portsmouth Polytechnic's experiment will focus on adaptive modulation as a type of fade countermeasure, and this paper introduces and describes the whole concept. Based on the assumption that the performance of a VSAT operating at 20/30 GHz band will be affected to a major extent by amplitude scintillations and rain fading, the performance of a range of combinations of earth‐station power amplifier and antenna characteristics is presented. An adaptive multi‐phase shift keying technique is then compared with conventional systems in terms of availability and data throughput. It is shown that such a fade countermeasure contributes to increasing both the overall system availability and the total data throughput of a digital communication system, while the inevitable reductions in data rate occur smoothly.

Small Firms' Output Determination: An Attitude Problem

DR ALAN HANKINSON is with the Portsmouth Polytechnic Business School, England. This longitudinal investigation is an examination of output determination in a sample of 60 small engineering firms in the East Dorset and West Hampshire regions of England during the period of 1979-88. The work is a critical survey of the motivations behind output determination. The findings indicate disconcerting problems of output determination within the small firm of up to 100 employees but especially those in mechanical engineering compared with electrical engineering. As a result of these non-optimum attitudes to output determination, financial returns tended to remain disappointing for the small engineering firm. The author suggests that firms must appraise and monitor their performances more purposefully. Output must be regarded as an important aspect of marketing which the firm itself must control and not be regarded as an external factor beyond the firm's influence.

Abstract Student communication skills have been a topic of much recent concern and debate: graduates and newly qualified accountants being heavily criticised for their lack of them. This research report describes the work which is being carried out at Portsmouth Polytechnic to overcome deficiencies in this important area of education.

The Pegasus programme at Portsmouth Polytechnic

Pegasus is an initiative aimed at getting a greater level of career education and personal skill development work into the academic experience of the student in higher education. It is designed for undergraduates in the central and final years of their studies. Building on work already developed and well advanced in some institutions, it aims to respond to the concerns of employers that graduates often lack a sense of direction or identity in terms of their careers, and in selection and interview often fail to demonstrate well developed personal skills or self-confidence. The project therefore draws upon, and overlaps with, such activities as study skills programmes, the fostering of enabling skills within the academic course, and workshops and informational sessions traditionally offered by the Careers Service.

Small Firms' Pricing - the Neglected Art

Dr. Alan Hankinson is Reader in Business Management at Portsmouth Polytechnic, England. This paper reports the findings of a study which examined the pricing behaviour of 60 small engineering firms in the Dorset-Hampshire region of Southern England during the period 1983-1985. Overall, the findings suggested strongly that the firms' pricing behaviour was generally inconsistent with goals of optimisation. The small firms in question appeared to ignore, and even avoid, opportunities for improved performances, financial or otherwise, through more effective pricing. The Dorset-Hampshire survey revealed endemic problems of pricing within the small engineering firm with up to 100 employees, but especially those in mechanical as opposed to electrical engineering. Almost inevitably as a consequence of these non-rigorous approaches, financial returns will tend to remain below optimum for the small engineering firm. Despite any limitations of the sample, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation, the total picture cannot be disregarded.

Abstract In the light of concerns expressed over regional geography and global knowledge, a questionnaire designed to test factual knowledge and awareness of Latin America was administered to several groups at Portsmouth Polytechnic, including incoming first‐year students and academic staff. Analysis of the resulting data reveals some surprising results and suggests wider implications including a global educational role for geography.

Effective CADCAM in an educational environment

New Records of Tubeworms Established in British Harbours

Populations of the spirorbid Pileolaria berkeleyana ( = P. rosepigmentata) are recorded in harbours at Plymouth, Falmouth and Portsmouth and of three similarly abundant serpulids, Filogranula calyculata and Metavermilia multicristata at Abereiddy and Vermiliopsis striaticeps at Falmouth. Ship-borne introductions may well have occurred but the Abereiddy serpulids have more probably come from undiscovered populations nearby, in areas too rocky and deep for easy sampling.INTRODUCTIONThree apparently exotic species of tubeworms, a spirorbid and two serpulids, have been established for at least five years in aquarium tanks at the Portsmouth Polytechnic Marine Laboratory. The tanks receive a continuous flow of unfiltered sea water, which is pumped from Langstone Harbour via a header tank, with little if any change in temperature. They contain many slate slabs from a flooded quarry (at Abereiddy, in South Wales), which had been opened to the sea in 1932 and is used as a harbour for small boats. The most recent transfer of slates to Portsmouth was in 1972. The slates were brought in because they bore populations of a native spirorbid (Thorp, 1975), but the associated fauna was not closely studied at that time because a general account of Abereiddy quarry and its fauna was being prepared by Hiscock & Hoare (1975).The exotic serpulids occurred particularly on the undersides of the slates, but had not been noted by Hiscock & Hoare, nor in any other British fauna list. They also occurred on the underside of a disused heater/cooler plate supporting the slates in one of the tanks, which indicated that they had been breeding in that tank.

In December 1985 Michael Barker and Polly Vergo (Portsmouth Polytechnic) with Theo Getty (Portsmouth Museum) visited Haslar Museum in Gosport, but with limited success. They report: *The whole of the geological collection was, during the last war, in the basement of a building which suffered a direct hit from German bombs. Apparently the building collapsed on top of the basement and everything was sealed in it. It is all still there but buried under rubble and with a new building on top of it! All the Museum has left in geological terms are a few vertebrate remains - ox, probable Indian elephant tooth (juvenile), and small lemur-like primates. These are in a display case but with...

Lost & Found: 152. Museum of Haslar Hospital, Gosport

A brief note in The Magazine of Natural History, (1828) 1, 191, describes the Museum as occupying the upper of two rooms *lately erected* by *the commissioners of His Majesty*s victualling department*. The writer comments *It already contains many curious specimens in morbid anatomy, ^nd a considerable number of foreign birds. insects, shells, minerals, plants, &c. principally presented by the medical officers of His Majesty*s navy*. H.S.T. Mrs P.M. Vergo (Department of Palaeontology, Portsmouth Polytechnic) writes that in 1941 the Haslar collections included some 16,000 geological specimens collected by naval personnel. The limits of library user education: arguments for a lecturer‐led, student‐centred approach

Abstract The author discusses some of the thinking behind programmes of library instruction in higher education. The shortcomings of such courses are examined, with particular reference to a course for first‐year students at Portsmouth Polytechnic. The author argues that library instruction can only succeed when fully integrated with the teaching of the subject. This requires greater consideration by geography teachers of the relationship between bibliographic knowledge and substantive knowledge.
