Effect of pedestrian trampling on aeolian sand dynamics on beach surfaces: An experimental study

Wind tunnel experiments and measurements with the Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) were conducted to investigate the effect footprints on a sandy beach have on aerodynamic roughness, physical roughness, and the wind erosion threshold. Footprints parallel and footprints perpendicular to the wind were tested, for bare feet and walking shoes, for a lighter (63 kg) and a heavier (75 kg) person. The data were compared to a flat undisturbed surface, which served as control. Results show that footprints have a significant effect on aerodynamic roughness and on the wind erosion threshold. Aerodynamic roughness is higher, and the wind erosion threshold lower, for footprints parallel to the wind compared to footprints perpendicular to the wind, for footprints produced with bare feet compared to footprints produced by walking shoes, and for footprints made by a heavier person compared to footprints made by a lighter person. The differences with an undisturbed flat surface, for which aerodynamic roughness is small and the wind erosion threshold high, were found to be substantial. Of the measured physical roughness parameters of the footprints, surface area of the imprint showed the highest correlation with aerodynamic roughness. The effect of the volume and the average depth of the imprint on aerodynamic roughness was much smaller or even not statistically significant. The PI-SWERL measurements also suggested that on dry sandy surfaces foot imprints may rapidly disintegrate, even when the wind is only slightly above the erosion threshold. This study shows that when wind erosion models are used to describe and predict the initial phase of wind erosion on sandy beaches, the process of trampling with footprints should at least be considered.

The role of abrasion and resident fines in dust production from aeolian sands as measured by the Portable in situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL)

Aeolian deposits are important sources of atmospheric dust, particularly from extensive dune fields, interdune areas and vast sand sheet deposits across the globe. This study quantified the total suspended particle flux (TSP), particulate matter <10 μm (PM10) and PM2.5 emissions with the Portable in situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) for eighteen different types of sand to determine the role of aeolian abrasion in dust production. Aeolian abrasion results in grain coating removal, chipping, and spalling of sand grains during saltation transport, producing dust-sized particles. The studied sands were poorly- to well-sorted, round to angular, coarse to fine sand composed of quartz-rich to gypsum-rich particles. Some sand samples contained up to 14 % silt and clay, referred to as resident fines. Experiments on sand with diverse characteristics elucidated dust production processes. Samples composed of 100 % sand produced dust by aeolian abrasion with fluxes of 0.2–2.5 mg m−2 s−1 indicating aeolian abrasion as a potentially important process contributing to dust storms and desert loess deposits. Sand containing resident fines produced up to 42 mg m−2 s−1, an order of magnitude more dust than clean sand samples, with >60 % of the dust produced by the release of silt and clay and up to 40 % from aeolian abrasion. These high fluxes rival dust storms emanating from playas like Owens Lake in California. Climate change and anthropogenic disturbance of stabilized aeolian sand deposits in arid lands will likely result in increased dust emissions in the future which should be parameterized in climate models.

Characterization of potential fugitive dust emissions within the Keeler Dunes, an inland dune field in the Owens Valley, California, United States

Fugitive dust sources within the Keeler Dunes, a small shoreline dune system in the northeast corner of Owens (dry) Lake in Owens Valley, California, U.S.A. were investigated. PM10 flux potential was quantified using measurements from a Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL). Stratified random sampling was used to evaluate potential PM10 fluxes from eight landforms, as determined by high-resolution satellite imagery and ground observations, found within the vicinity of the Keeler Dunes. Within each landform, potential PM10 flux for one or more representative surface types was measured. A total of seven surface types were identified, several of which existed on different landforms. The results indicate that the major determinant of potential PM10 flux is the landform type. Furthermore, the highest potential PM10 fluxes are from landforms characterized by surface deposition of alluvial sediment. Within the Keeler Dunes Complex, these landforms are associated with the severely eroded 1944 shoreline coppice dunes, flash flood channels, and flash flood deposits. In the Owens Valley, studies of dust emissions have tended to focus on aeolian landforms. However, similar to measurements of potential PM10 flux from desert landforms across the globe, this investigation points to the importance of alluvial landforms as major sources of dust emissions within the Owens Valley region. This article is a part of a larger investigation into the modern destabilization and migration of the Keeler Dunes (Schaaf et al. this issue).

Contemporary and future dust sources and emission fluxes from gypsum- and quartz-dominated eolian systems, New Mexico and Texas, USA

AbstractRecent research on dust emissions from eolian dunes seeks to improve regional and global emissions estimates and knowledge of dust sources, particularly with a changing climate. Dust emissions from dune fields can be more accurately estimated when considering the whole eolian system composed of active to stabilized dunes, interdunes, sand sheets, and playas. Each landform can emit different concentrations of dust depending on the supply of silt and clay, soil surface characteristics, and the degree to which the landforms are dynamic and interact. We used the Portable In Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) to measure PM10 (particulate matter &amp;lt;10 μm) dust emission potential from landforms in two end-member eolian systems: the White Sands dune field in New Mexico (USA), composed of gypsum, and the Monahans dune field in west Texas, composed of quartz. White Sands is a hotspot of dust emissions where dunes and the adjacent playa yield high dust fluxes up to 8.3 mg/m2/s. In contrast, the active Monahans dunes contain 100% sand and produce low dust fluxes up to 0.5 mg/m2/s, whereas adjacent stabilized sand sheets and dunes that contain silt and clay could produce up to 17.7 mg/m2/s if reactivated by climate change or anthropogenic disturbance. These findings have implications for present and future dust emission potential of eolian systems from the Great Plains to the southwestern United States, with unrealized emissions of &amp;gt;300 t/km2/yr.

Assessing the PM10 emission potential of sandy, dryland soils in South Africa using the PI-SWERL

The Free State has been identified as the region with the most dust sources in South Africa. These dust sources can be linked with the large, heavily cultivated cropland areas in this province, which leaves fields vulnerable to wind erosion after the harvest in the winter. For this study, the focus was on the factors that influence the emission from bare, flat surfaces on agricultural lands in this region. The Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) was used to measure the emission flux from adjacent crusted and loose surfaces, which was combined with shear strength, moisture, and soil texture measurements. Boosted regression tree (BRT) analyses were used to identify the variable with the highest relevance on the emission flux. On the whole dataset, that the shear strength is the most important variable that controls the emission. This is reflected in the significantly lower emission from the crusted surfaces (0.49 mg m −2 s −1 ) compared to that of loose surfaces (2.34 mg m −2 s −1 ). However, for crusted surfaces, the presence of abraders appeared to be the most significant factor in emission, showing a power relationship between the abrader count and the emission flux (R 2 = 0.76). In the case of the loose surfaces, the presence of clay and silt was a major influence in emissivity, with a linear relationship between the two variables (R 2 = 0.68). This difference in factors depending on the agricultural disturbance, asks for a more holistic approach when predicting emission from such arid cropland areas.

Influence of sampling approaches on physical and geochemical analysis of aeolian dust in source regions

The characterisation of mineral dust at emission sources is essential for quantifying the wider-scale environmental impacts dust has, as well as improving its incorporation in modelling. Methods of sampling sediments at these source areas for the purposes of dust characterisation are varied and can produce different representations of emitted dust. This study systematically compared dust characterisations from three established approaches for estimating dust emission potential, namely: Big Spring Number Eight (BSNE) traps, a Portable In-situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) wind tunnel, and bulk surface sampling, at a known Namib Desert dust source. Individual particle analysis by auto-SEM (QEMSCAN) allowed comparison of size, shape, mineralogy and elemental composition at micrometre-scale for samples from the three approaches. BSNE samples consisted of a lower proportion of fine sediment (<20 µm particle diameter) than PI-SWERL-derived samples, with this performance possibly influenced by atmospheric humidity. In comparison, PI-SWERL characterised the dust with relatively fewer particles between 63 and 100 µm, a fraction that was more evident in both the BSNE-derived and surface sediments. The reduced representation of this coarser fraction resulted in appreciable differences in particle shape and mineralogic characteristics compared to BSNE and surface-derived samples. The different representations by the three methods return variable dust characteristics at source across fundamental properties of particle size, shape and mineralogy. Awareness of the different representations of dust caused by sampling technique remains essential for the appropriate physical and geochemical characterisation of aeolian dust and highlights how standardised techniques are important for meaningful comparisons, while methods to achieve accurate characterisation remain a priority for the discipline.

Physical Crust Formation on Sandy Soils and Their Potential to Reduce Dust Emissions from Croplands

The sandy croplands in the Free State have been identified as one of the main dust sources in South Africa. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and strength of physical soil crusts on cropland soils in the Free State, to identify the rainfall required to form a stable crust, and to test their impact on dust emissions. Crust strength was measured using a fall cone penetrometer and a torvane, while laboratory rainfall simulations were used to form experimental crusts. Dust emissions were measured with a Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL). The laboratory rainfall simulations showed that stable crusts could be formed by 15 mm of rainfall. The PI-SWERL experiments illustrated that the PM10 emission flux of such crusts is between 0.14% and 0.26% of that of a non-crusted Luvisol and Arenosol, respectively. The presence of abraders on the crust can increase the emissions up to 4% and 8% of the non-crusted dust flux. Overall, our study shows that crusts in the field are potentially strong enough to protect the soil surfaces against wind erosion during a phase of the cropping cycle when the soil surface is not protected by plants.

Dust emission source characterization for visibility hazard assessment on Lordsburg Playa in Southwestern New Mexico, USA

In drylands around the world, ephemeral lakes (playas) are common. Dry, wind-erodible playa sediments are potent local and regional sources of dust and PM10 (airborne particles with diameters less than 10 μm). Dust clouds often cause sudden and/or prolonged loss of visibility to travelers on downwind roadways. Lordsburg Playa, in southwestern New Mexico, USA is bisected by Interstate Highway 10. Dust storms emanating from the playa have been responsible for numerous visibility-related road closures (including 39 road closures between 2012 and 2019) causing major economic losses, in addition to well over a hundred dust-related vehicle crashes causing at least 41 lost lives in the last 53 years. In order to improve understanding of the surfaces responsible for the dust emissions, we investigated the critical wind friction velocity thresholds and the dust emissivities of surfaces representing areas typical of Lordsburg Playa’s stream deltas, shorelines, and ephemerally flooded lakebed using a Portable In-Situ Wind ERosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL). Mean threshold friction velocities for PM10 entrainment ranged from less than 0.30 m s− 1 for areas in the delta and shoreline to greater than 0.55 m s− 1 for ephemerally flooded areas of the lakebed. Similarly, we quantified mean PM10 vertical flux rates ranging from less than 500 μg m− 2 s− 1 for ephemerally flooded areas of lakebed to nearly 25,000 μg m− 2 s− 1 for disturbed delta surfaces. The unlimited PM10 supply of the relatively coarse sediments along the western shoreline is problematic and indicates that this may be the source area for longer-term visibility reducing dust events and should be a focus area for dust mitigation efforts.

A wind tunnel and field evaluation of various dust suppressants

ABSTRACT A series of experiments was designed to assess the relative efficacy of various dust suppressants to suppress PM10 emissions from nepheline syenite tailings. The experiments were conducted in the Trent University Environmental Wind Tunnel, Peterborough, Ontario, and on the tailings ponds at a mine near Havelock, Ontario. Treated surfaces were subjected to particle-free airflow, abrasion with blown sand particles, and particle-free airflow after physical disturbance. Emission rates in the wind tunnel tests were calculated from dust concentration measurements obtained in vertical profile with DustTrak™ II aerosol monitors (model 8530); rates in the field were measured using a Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL). In the particle-free wind tunnel tests, three of the surface treatments performed well, and PM10 emission scaled inversely with crust strength. Light bombardment of each surface by saltating sand grains increased PM10 emission rates by two orders of magnitude. All treated surfaces emitted significantly more PM10 after physical disturbance. In the field study, plots treated with a commercial dust suppressant were found to release more PM10 than either the control or irrigated plots, although it should be noted that the emission rates were similar in magnitude. As in the wind tunnel experiments, all of the field plots became significantly more emissive after physical disturbance. The field results suggest that the site conditions, inclusive of the potential for dust advection and resuspension, must be taken into account when considering the use of a commercial dust suppressant. Implications: Fugitive dust (PM10) emissions from mining and industrial operations worldwide present significant environmental and human health risks, leaving mine operators challenged to find reliable, durable, and cost-effective mitigation options. Commercial dust suppressants boast unique chemical compositions and commensurate particle binding capabilities, although few side-by-side comparisons exist in the literature. The efficacy of four commercial products to suppress PM10 emissions from mine tailings, before and after physical disturbance, was assessed using robust field and wind tunnel experiments. All surfaces emitted significantly more PM10 after physical disturbance but with considerable variability amongst products. Possible reasons for the differences in relative performance are explored.

Application of Test Method for Dust Suppression Efficiency of Wind Erosion Dust Suppressant

Wind erosion dust suppressant is an effective measure for controlling wind erosion dust. This study used the Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) to evaluate the efficiency of domestic and foreign dust suppressants and to compare their control efficiency of PM2.5 in terms of spraying methods, dilution factors, and wind speed. The following results were noted.① According to the recommended dilution factor, G and Enviroseal (ES) dust suppressant solutions were treated and tested, respectively. The control efficiency of particulate matter with diameters less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) corresponding to the droplet spraying method was better than the atomized spraying method; the G dust suppressant efficiency, at 99.5%, was better than ES and water, at 94.0% and 77.5%, respectively, at 17.2 m·s-1, which is equivalent to grade 8 wind. ② The G dust suppressant with dilution factors of 50, 100, 150, 200, and 400 times was tested. The dust suppression efficiency at a wind speed of 17.2 m·s-1 was 99.7%, 99.5%, 99.7%, 98.1%, and 95.9%, respectively. The best cost-effective dilution factor of G dust suppressant was 150 times. The efficiency of dust suppressants increased when the wind speed increased between 13.1 m·s-1 and 17.2 m·s-1. ③ The method of using PI-SWERL to test the efficiency of wind erosion dust suppressant can quantify the suppression efficiency of dust suppressant on PM2.5. It is recommended to conduct dust suppression during effective periods and to practice environmentally friendly methods of wind erosion dust suppression.

Meteorological catalysts of dust events and particle source dynamics of affected soils during the 1930s Dust Bowl drought, Southern High Plains, USA

Abstract Mineral dust aerosols are a key component of the Earth system and a growing public health concern under climate change, as levels of dustiness increase. The Great Plains in the USA is particularly vulnerable to dust episodes, but land-atmosphere interactions contributing to large-scale dust transport are poorly constrained. This study compiled one of the longest quantitative, spatially-comprehensive records of dust events in the core Dust Bowl region never before available. Combined with experiment station reports from the Soil Conservation Service, reanalysis data products, and contemporary field surveys using a Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL), the study examined meteorological catalysts for dust events and surficial dynamics of particle emission on the Southern High Plains (SHP). Multivariate statistical analyses of dust event variance yield 6 principal components capturing ˜60% of the variance of all dust event days. Results identified four dominant modes of dust events related to the season of occurrence and principal meteorological controls. A broader assessment of the potential emissivity of SHP soils reveals that disturbed surfaces begin to emit dust at a magnitude-higher rate than undisturbed surfaces as soon as the wind velocity reaches the threshold, increasing linearly with windspeed. Conversely, crusted undisturbed soil surfaces do not begin to reach the same flux rate until much higher windspeeds, at which point crusts are broken and emissivity rates increase exponentially. Significantly, the particle emissivity of undisturbed, loose sandy soils mirrors that of disturbed surfaces in relation to windspeed and potential magnitude of dust emission. This finding suggests that the prevalent sandier, rangeland soils of the SHP could be equal or greater dust sources than cultivated fields during periods of sustained, severe aridity.

Emission Characteristics of Wind Erosion Dust from Topsoil of Urban Roadside-Tree Pool

This study characterized the wind erosion dust emissions from topsoil of urban roadside-tree pool. The study area is the Xicheng District of Beijing and uses GIS to obtain the spatial distribution of various road mileages. A full bore investigation method was carried out to survey tree pool in the Zhanlanlu Subdistrict to obtain the activity level of tree pool in the Xicheng district. The portable in situ wind erosion laboratory (PI-SWERL) was used to determine the emission factors of PM2.5 from the wind erosion dust from tree pool and to estimate the PM2.5 emission inventory of tree pool in the Xicheng District in 2016. The results showed that:①The annual emission factors per unit area of PM2.5 from tree pool of freeways' frontage roads, major roads, minor roads, and alleys are 47.9, 7.9, 14.9, and 29.9 g·(m2·a)-1, respectively. The reduction rate of PM2.5 emission factors from tree pool by precipitation was about 30.3% in 2016. ②The annual emission factors per unit mileage of PM2.5 from the tree pool of freeways' frontage roads, major roads, minor roads, branch roads, and alleys are 2.57, 2.33, 4.04, 7.31, and 5.44 kg·(km·a)-1, respectively, and the factors for branch roads are 1.3, 1.8, 2.8, and 3.1 times as much as those for alleys, minor roads, freeways' frontage roads, and major roads, respectively. Taking the emission factor for minor roads as an example, the winter emission factor is 1.3, 7.3, and 8.7 times greater than that in the spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. ③PM2.5 emissions from the tree pool in the Xicheng District of Beijing are 1.60 t·a-1, and the uncertainty range of the emission inventory is -143%~184%. The emissions in winter are 0.68 t·a-1, which are 1.1, 1.42, and 5.1 times greater than that in the spring, summer, and fall, respectively. The emission values for freeways' frontage roads, major roads, minor roads, collectors, and alleys account for 5.6%, 8.7%, 23.2%, 4.1%, and 58.4% of the total emissions, respectively. It is recommended that the urban roadside-tree pool be covered to reduce wind erosion dust emissions with materials that do not affect the growth of trees as soon as possible.

Geomorphic and hydrologic controls of dust emissions during drought from Yellow Lake playa, West Texas, USA

Numerous complex geomorphic and hydrologic factors have been identified that control dust emissions from playas, yet there are few measurements of dust emissions from playas during drought, which is assumed to enhance emissions, or during low-emission seasons. We used the PI-SWERL (Portable in situ Wind Erosion Laboratory) to measure dust emission potential at Yellow Lake, a saline playa in West Texas, USA, during the drought of 2011. Direct aeolian entrainment of dust occurred primarily on supply-limited surfaces consisting of mud-cracked surfaces as well as crusts containing halite, thenardite, and gypsum. High-magnitude, low duration peaks in dust emissions occurred over parts of the playa underlain by shallow groundwater (<1 m) where conditions encouraged the crystallization of efflorescent salts. In contrast, surfaces characterized by loose sand-sized aggregates produced sustained dust emissions two to three orders of magnitude higher than the playa surface because aggregates broke apart during saltation. Prolonged drought at Yellow Lake will significantly change the frequency and type of dust emissions. We propose that a similar scenario characterizes dust production at many hydrologically similar playas. More research is needed to assess the impacts of changing groundwater levels on dust emissions in the context of extended drought and anthropogenic climate change.

Sand dunes as potential sources of dust in northern China

While saltation bombardment of sand grains on a fine substrate can produce considerable dust, the well-sorted nature of sand dunes tends to preclude them from consideration as major dust sources. Recent research, however, has revealed that sand dunes can, in some cases, be large sources of dust. We used the PI-SWERL (Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory) to measure in the field the potential of sand dunes and other desert landforms to emit particulate matter <10 μm (PM-10) dust in the Tengger, Ulan Buh, and Mu Us deserts of northern China. Combined with high resolution particle size measurements of the dune sand, an assessment of sand dunes as a dust source can be made. Large active transverse dunes tend to contain little to no stored PM-10, yet they produce a low dust flux. Coppice dunes stabilized by vegetation contain appreciable PM-10 and have very high dust emission potential. There is a positive correlation between the amount of PM-10 stored in a dune and its potential dust flux. Saltation liberates loose fines stored in dunes, making them very efficient dust emitters compared to landforms such as dry lake beds and washes where dust particles are unavailable for aeolian transport due to protective crusts or sediment cohesion. In cases where large dunes do not store PM-10 yet emit dust when active, two hypotheses can be considered: (1) iron-oxide grain coatings are removed during saltation, creating dust, and (2) sand grains collide during saltation, abrading grains to create dust. Observations reveal that iron oxide coatings are present on some dune sands. PI-SWERL data suggests that low dust fluxes from dunes containing no stored dust may represent an estimate for the amount of PM-10 dust produced by removal of iron oxide coatings. These results are similar to results from dunes in the United States. In addition, PI-SWERL results suggest that dust-bearing coppice dunes, which cover vast areas of China’s sandy deserts, may become major sources of dust in the future if overgrazing, depletion of groundwater, or drought destabilizes the vegetation that now partially covers these dunes.

Wind erosion potential for fugitive dust sources in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region

Abstract This study characterized the generation of windblown dust from various sources in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in Alberta, Canada. The Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) equipped with two real-time dust monitors and nine-channel filter packs was used to simulate wind-driven erosion and measure emissions. Sixty four sites were measured, including oil sands mining facilities, quarry operations, and roadways in the vicinity of Ft. McMurray and Ft. McKay. Key parameters related to windblown dust generation were characterized including: threshold friction velocity, reservoir type, and particle size-segregated emission potential. The threshold wind speed for particle suspension varies from 11 to 21.5 km/h (u10+; measured at 10 m above ground level), and saltation occurs at higher speeds of u10+ >32 km/h. Accounting for surface roughness on measurements conducted with PI-SWERL: Evaluation of a subjective visual approach and a photogrammetric technique

Abstract The effect of small-scale surface roughness on measurements with PI-SWERL (The Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory) was investigated using a viscometer-type device. The relationship between shear stress at the soil surface and PI-SWERL rate of rotation (RPM) was determined empirically with test surfaces of varying roughness including fine to coarse sandpaper, small domed structures (H = 2.5–2.9 mm) arranged in arrays, small (H ≈ 2 mm) and large pebbles (H ≈ 5–7 mm), thin cylinders representing blades of grass (D ≈ 2 mm), and wave-like surfaces intended to represent small ripples. An empirical equation that uses a single parameter α was developed to relate RPM to the shear stress experienced by a test surface. Two methods were presented for estimating α. The first relies on a user’s ability to estimate α by comparing to a catalog of standards of roughness. The second uses a digital photogrammetry technique in combination with image processing to parameterize roughness. The photographic method offers a factor of two improvement in estimation of α compared to the first method. Although a limited number of surfaces was tested, the photogrammetry technique appears to warrant further development. Additional findings relate to the optimal effective area for use in calculating wind erosion parameters from field tests and an estimate of errors for both dust emissions measurements and the associated friction velocity (u∗) when using the PI-SWERL. Overall, this work serves to reduce the uncertainties associated with using the PI-SWERL as a tool for estimating windblown dust emissions.

Arsenic concentrations in dust emissions from wind erosion and off-road vehicles in the Nellis Dunes Recreational Area, Nevada, USA

Field and laboratory experiments were performed in the Nellis Dunes Recreational Area near Las Vegas, NV, USA to evaluate arsenic concentrations associated with dust emissions from wind erosion and offroad vehicles. Soil samples were collected from 17 types of desert surfaces and five unpaved parking lot locations for analyses. The surface units are based on surficial characteristics that affect dust emissions. Arsenic concentrations were also measured in dust emitted from each surface unit using a Portable In Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL). Emissions were measured from ORV trails and undisturbed terrain. Concentrations of As in the soil and parking lot samples ranged from 3.49 to 83.02 l gg 1

Dust dynamics in off-road vehicle trails: Measurements on 16 arid soil types, Nevada, USA

Soil analyses and measurements with the Portable In Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) were conducted on 16 soil types in an area heavily affected by off-road vehicle (ORV) driving. Measurements were performed in ORV trails as well as on undisturbed terrain to investigate how ORV driving affects the vulnerability of a soil to emit PM10 (particles < 10 μm), during the driving as well as during episodes of wind erosion. Particular attention is paid to how the creation of a new trail affects those properties of the topsoil that determine its capability to emit PM10. Also, recommendations are given for adequate management of ORV-designed areas. The type of surface (sand, silt, gravel, drainage) is a key factor with respect to dust emission in an ORV trail. Trails in sand, defined in this study as the grain size fraction 63–2000 μm, show higher deflation thresholds (the critical wind condition at which wind erosion starts) than the surrounding undisturbed soil. Trails in silt (2–63 μm) and in drainages, on the other hand, have lower deflation thresholds than undisturbed soil. The increase in PM10 emission resulting from the creation of a new ORV trail is much higher for surfaces with silt than for surfaces with sand. Also, the creation of a new trail in silt decreases the supply limitation in the top layer: the capacity of the reservoir of emission-available PM10 increases. For sand the situation is reversed: the supply limitation increases, and the capacity of the PM10 reservoir decreases. Finally, ORV trails are characterized by a progressive coarsening of the top layer with time, but the speed of coarsening is much lower in trails in silt than in trails in sand or in drainages. The results of this study suggest that, to minimize emissions of PM10, new ORV fields should preferably be designed on sandy terrain rather than in silt areas or in drainages.

A New Technique for Characterizing the Efficacy of Fugitive Dust Suppressants

The Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) instrument was evaluated for testing the effectiveness of dust suppressants for a range of native and constructed soils. The PM10 (particles with diameter ≤10 µm) emissions from dust suppressant-treated and untreated soil surfaces were measured periodically over 14 months. No statistically significant differences were found among soil surfaces treated with three dilution mixtures of the dust suppressant. The temporal variation of PM10 emissions from treated and untreated plots for native and constructed soil textures indicated that: (1) reductions of PM10 emissions by the dust suppressant were significant within 2–3 months after the application and diminished substantially thereafter, (2) decomposition of the protective treated layer resulted in high PM10 emissions for longer environmental exposure times, and (3) emissions from untreated soil surfaces declined over time because of the formation of a natural crust. These results demonstrated that the PI-SWERL can provide qualitative and quantitative information on PM10 emissions for a range of soil textures and can be used to estimate the effectiveness of dust suppressants exposed to actual environmental (i.e., weather and solar radiation) conditions over long periods of time.

The Portable In Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL): A new method to measure PM 10 windblown dust properties and potential for emissions

A new device—the Portable In Situ Wind ERosion Lab (PI-SWERL)—for measuring the potential for wind erosion and dust emission from soil surfaces is described. The device uses an annular ring (inner diameter=39 cm, outer diameter=51 cm) that rotates 6 cm above the soil test surface. Dust and sand are mobilized by the shear created by the rotating ring. Dust concentrations within the chamber that encloses the annular ring are measured by light scattering, used as a surrogate for particulate matter mass concentrations. While the PI-SWERL does not realistically simulate natural wind erosion processes that are often driven by saltation, measurements with the device provide a robust index of wind erosion/dust emission potential. Compared to traditional field wind tunnels used for the same purpose, the PI-SWERL offers significant economy in size, portability, and ease of use.
