Channel engineering strategy of precisely modified MOF/nanofiber composite separator for advanced aqueous zinc ion batteries

As the combination of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with adjustable channels and flexible polymeric matrix, MOF/nanofiber composite separators enable the controllable ion transport behavior, which offers promising candidates for developing novel battery separators. In this study, series MOF functionalized electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofiber separators were successfully developed via a precisely surface grafting strategy and then served as the separators for highly efficient aqueous zinc (Zn)-ion batteries (ZIBs). Moreover, channel engineering was developed by placing amino (MOF-N) and sulfonic acid groups (MOF-NS) on the channel surface of UIO-66, which then effectively promoted the ion transport progress. In particular, the resultant MOF-NS shows an excellent ionic conductivity (22.81 mS cm−1), improved Zn2+ transference number (0.78), and outstanding cyclic durability. These enhanced properties can be contributed by the effectively promoted dissociation of zinc salts and desolvation processes of hydrated Zn ions through strong ion-dipole interactions, as confirmed by the theoretical simulations. Our work demonstrates the great importance of channel engineering in modifying porous MOFs materials and the strong power of the precisely modified MOF/nanofiber separators in regulating ion transmission behavior and thus offers a promising separator candidate for high performance aqueous ZIBs.

Concomitant role of metal clusters and ligands in the synthesis and control of porosity in Metal-Organic Frameworks: A literature review

A clossal increase in the number of research articles on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently been anticipated as next-generation functional materials. The characteristic coordination behavior between metal ion and organic linker in MOFs provide them hydrid functional features of both the moieties. For the substantial improved performance of MOFs and to achieve widespread applications of MOFs in diverse fields, it is essential to develop effective synthetic strategies and understand the role of metal ion cluster or coordination sphere or secondary building units (SBU’s) and organic linker in detail. The augmentation in porosity and large surface area with multitude in diverse topologies provide a boost for the application of these materials in diverse allied fields. This review article provides a detailed introduction of the porous MOF materials; encompassing the role of secondary building units or metal cluster and organic linkers in defining the porosity of MOF materials. Detailed investigations about the role of metal ion clusters and expanded organic linkers that lead to MOFs with ultrahigh porosity have been done and portrayed carefully. The structural aspects of zirconium, zinc and copper cluster based porous MOFs and organic linkers (porphyrin and pyrene based) have been thoroughly portrayed owing to their various application in various fields. This review article will provide better understanding about the various factors involved in synthesis and controll of the porosity toward desired applications.

Dominant Role of Hole Transport Pathway in Achieving Record High Photoconductivity in Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with mobile charges have attracted significant attention due to their potential applications in photoelectric devices, chemical resistance sensors, and catalysis. However, fundamental understanding of the charge transport pathway within the framework and the key properties that determine the performance of conductive MOFs in photoelectric devices remain underexplored. Herein, we report the mechanisms of photoinduced charge transport and electron dynamics in the conductive 2D M-HHTP (M=Cu, Zn or Cu/Zn mixed; HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) MOFs and their correlation with photoconductivity using the combination of time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy, optical transient absorption spectroscopy, X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We identify the through-space hole transport mechanism through the interlayer sheet π-π interaction, where photoinduced hole state resides in HHTP ligand and electronic state is localized at the metal center. Moreover, the photoconductivity of the Cu-HHTP MOF is found to be 65.5 S m-1 , which represents the record high photoconductivity for porous MOF materials based on catecholate ligands.

Application of Fe-MOFs in Photodegradation and Removal of Air and Water Pollutants: A Review.

Photocatalytic technology has received increasing attention in recent years. A pivotal facet of photocatalytic technology lies in the development of photocatalysts. Porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, distinguished by their unique properties and structural characteristics, have emerged as a focal point of research in the field, finding widespread application in the photo-treatment and conversion of various substances. Fe-based MOFs have attained particular prominence. This review explores recent advances in the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous and gaseous substances. Furthermore, it delves into the interaction between the active sites of Fe-MOFs and pollutants, offering deeper insights into their mechanism of action. Fe-MOFs, as photocatalysts, predominantly facilitate pollutant removal through redox processes, interaction with acid sites, the formation of complexes with composite metal elements, binding to unsaturated metal ligands (CUSs), and hydrogen bonding to modulate their respiratory behavior. This review also highlights the focal points of future research, elucidating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in harnessing the characteristics and advantages of Fe-MOF composite catalysts. In essence, this review provides a comprehensive summary of research progress on Fe-MOF-based catalysts, aiming to serve as a guiding reference for other catalytic processes.

Water-Etched Approach to Hierarchically Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks with High Stability.

The development of hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high stability is desirable to expand their applications but remains challenging. Herein, an anionic sodalite-type microporous MOF (Yb-TTCA; TTCA3- = triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxylate) was synthesized, which shows outstanding catalytic activities for the cycloaddition of CO2 into cyclic carbonates. Moreover, the microporous Yb-TTCA can be transformed into a hierarchical micro- and mesoporous Yb-TTCA by water treatment with the mesopore sizes of 2 to 12 nm. The hierarchically porous Yb-TTCA (HP-Yb-TTCA) not only exhibits a high thermal stability up to 500 °C but also shows a high chemical stability in aqueous solutions with pH values ranging from 2 to 12. In addition, the HP-Yb-TTCA displays enhanced performance for the removal of organic dyes in comparison with microporous Yb-TTCA. This work provides a facile way to construct hierarchically porous MOF materials.

Rational design of stable functional metal-organic frameworks.

Functional porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been explored for a number of potential applications in catalysis, chemical sensing, water capture, gas storage, and separation. MOFs are among the most promising candidates to address challenges facing our society related to energy and environment, but the successful implementation of functional porous MOF materials are contingent on their stability; therefore, the rational design of stable MOFs plays an important role towards the development of functional porous MOFs. In this Focus article, we summarize progress in the rational design and synthesis of stable MOFs with controllable pores and functionalities. The implementation of reticular chemistry allows for the rational top-down design of stable porous MOFs with targeted topological networks and pore structures from the pre-selected building blocks. We highlight the reticular synthesis and applications of stable MOFs: (1) MOFs based on high valent metal ions (e.g., Al3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Ti4+ and Zr4+) and carboxylate ligands; (2) MOFs based on low valent metal ions (e.g., Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) and azolate linkers. We envision that the synthetic strategies, including modulated synthesis and post-synthetic modification, can potentially be extended to other more complex systems like metal-phosphonate framework materials.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Greenhouse Gas Applications.

Using petrol to supply energy for a car or burning coal to heat a building generates plenty of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO2 ), water vapor (H2 O), methane (CH4 ), nitrous oxide (N2 O), ozone (O3 ), fluorinated gases. These up-and-coming metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are structurally endowed with rigid inorganic nodes and versatile organic linkers, which have been extensively used in the GHG-related applications to improve the lives and protect the environment. Porous MOF materials and their derivatives have been demonstrated to be competitive and promising candidates for GHG separation, storage and conversions as they shows facile preparation, large porosity, adjustable nanostructure, abundant topology, and tunable physicochemical property. Enormous progress has been made in GHG storage and separation intrinsically stemmed from the different interaction between guest molecule and host framework from MOF itself in the recent five years. Meanwhile, the use of porous MOF materials to transform GHG and the influence of external conditions on the adsorption performance of MOFs for GHG are also enclosed. In this review, it is also highlighted that the existing challenges and future directions are discussed and envisioned in the rational design, facile synthesis and comprehensive utilization of MOFs and their derivatives for practical applications.

Hierarchical porous metal-organic framework composite with inorganic fillers for high-performance Li+ ions transport

A quasi-solid-state electrolyte (QSSE) based on the hierarchical porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials mixed with inorganic fillers Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) have been prepared for application of lithium ion battery, exhibiting effective storage and transportation capacity for lithium ions. The as-prepared lithium ion transports material demonstrated high ion conductivity (σ = 1.51 ×10−3 S/cm) and Li+ transference number (tLi+ = 0.80). Additionally, the electrolyte displays a wide electrochemical window with excellent electrochemical stability. Importantly, the lithium ion battery of LiFePO4 as the cathode has excellent rate capability and cycle durability, showing a new prospect of high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Application of Nanofiltration Membrane Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) in the Separation of Magnesium and Lithium from Salt Lakes

With the increasing demand for lithium, the shortage of resources has become increasingly apparent. In order to conserve resources and to improve recovery, the extraction of lithium from salt lakes has become mandatory for sustainable development. Porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have attracted extensive attention due to their high/tunable porosity, pore function, multiple pore structures/compositions, and open metal sites. Moreover, MOFs combine the advantages of other porous materials and have a wide range of applications, which have received significant interest from the scientific community. Therefore, the selection of MOFs materials, the optimization of preparation methods, and the research of lithium separators are key directions to improve the total yield of lithium resources in salt lakes in China. This study aims to improve the comprehensive utilization of resources after lithium extraction and strengthen the engineering technology research of lithium extraction from salt lakes. This study can help to achieve the goal of efficient, integrated, and sustainable utilization of salt lake resources. An attempt has been made to summarize the types and preparation methods of MOFs materials, as well as the separation mechanism of MOFs nanofiltration membranes, with reference to its application in lithium extraction from salt lake brine. Finally, the future development of MOFs nanofiltration membranes for lithium extraction from salt lakes is also proposed.

Controlled Covalent Functionalization of ZIF-90 for Selective CO2 Capture & Separation.

Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMM) with enhanced selectivity and permeability are preferred for gas separations. The porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials incorporated in them play a crucial part in improving the performance of MMM. In this study, Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-90) are selected to fabricate Polyetherimide (PEI) MMMs owing to their lucrative structural and chemical properties. This work reports new controlled post-synthetic modifications of ZIF-90 (50-PSM-ZIF-90) with ethanolamine to control the diffusion and uptake of CO2. Physical and chemical properties of ZIF-90, such as stability and presence of aldehyde functionality in the imidazolate linker, allow for easy modulation of the ZIF-90 pores and window size to tune the gas transport properties across ZIF-90-based membranes. Effects of these materials were investigated on the performance of MMMs and compared with pure PEI membranes. Performance of the MMMs was evaluated in terms of permeability of different gases and selective separation of CO2 and H2 gas. Results presented that the permeability of all membranes was in the following order, i.e., P(H2) > P(CO2) > P(O2) > P(CH4) > P(C2H6) > P(C3H8) > P(N2), demonstrating that kinetic gas diffusion is the predominant gas transport mode in these membranes. Among all the membranes, permeability of pure PEI membrane was highest for all gases due to the uniform porous morphology. The pure PEI membrane showed highest permeability of H2, which is 486.5 Barrer, followed by 49 Barrer for O2, 29 Barrer for N2, 142 Barrer for CO2, 41 Barrer for CH4, 40 Barrer for C2H6 and 39.6 Barrer for C3H8. Results also confirm the superiority of controlled PSM-ZIF-90-PEI membrane over the pure PEI and ZIF-90-PEI membranes in CO2 and H2 separation performance. The 50-PSM-ZIF-90 PEI membrane exhibited a 20% increase in CO2 separation from methane and a 26% increase over nitrogen compared to the ZIF-90-PEI membrane. The 50-PSM-ZIF-90 PEI membrane showed 15% more H2/O2 separation and 9% more H2/CH4 separation than ZIF-90 PEI membrane. Overall, this study represents the role of controlled PSM in enhancing the property of new materials like ZIF and its application in MMMs fabrication to develop a promising approach for the CO2 capture and separation.

An ultramicroporous metal-organic framework based on octahedral-like cages showing high-selective methane purification from a six-component C1/C2/C3 hydrocarbons mixture

Given the crucial significance of using cleaner methane (CH4) to replace else fossil fuels in remitting energy consumption and preventing environmental degradation, developing prominent adsorbents to purify CH4 from multicomponent mixtures is fundamentally important but faces great challenges. Cage-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) bring about widespread attention in solving numerous separation problems due to their inherent structural preponderances. Herein, we constructed an octahedral-like cages-based MOF (NUM-18) that incorporates two different types of cages within the whole framework and bears abundant Lewis basic sites (naked N atoms) and nonpolar aromatic rings immobilized in the pore surface. Benefitting from its intriguing structural characteristics, the pure-component gas adsorption properties were systematically investigated and indicate that NUN-18a (activated NUM-18) has excellent adsorptive capacities with respect to C2-C3 hydrocarbons than CH4. The IAST adsorption selectivities for C2/CH4 are above 14.0, while the adsorption selectivities of C3/CH4 startlingly surpass 86.0, respectively, all of which forebode that NUM-18a can achieve efficient recovery of C2-C3 hydrocarbons associated with CH4 purification. Furthermore, the actual separation feasibility for an equimolar 6-component C1/C2/C3 hydrocarbons mixture was examined by simulated dynamic column breakthrough experiments. Finally, molecular simulation calculations were adopted to ascertain potential gas adsorption mechanisms. This work provided a new paradigm for developing novel porous crystalline MOFs materials to separate hyper-complex gas mixtures.

Simultaneous removal of arsenite and arsenate from mining wastewater using ZIF-8 embedded with iron nanoparticles

Arsenic contamination is an increasing global environmental problem, especially in mining industry wastewater where both arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) have been routinely detected. In this paper, a novel porous metal-organic framework material (ZIF-8) was composited with iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) to form a functional material (ZIF-8@FeNPs) for the simultaneous removal of As(III)/(V) from wastewater. The material effectively removed both As(III) and As(V) with removal efficiencies of 99.9 and 71.2%, respectively. Advanced characterization techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier infrared (FTIR) indicated that removal of As(III) and As(V) involved complex formation. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second order kinetics indicating adsorption involved chemisorption. After four cycles of reuse the he removal rate of As species was still relatively high at > 60% When ZIF-8@FeNPs were used to remove As from real wastewater from acid mines the removal efficiency was 94.27%. Finally, a As(III) and As(V) removal mechanism was proposed.

Binding Materials for MOF Monolith Shaping Processes: A Review towards Real Life Application

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) could be utilized for a wide range of applications such as sorption, catalysis, chromatography, energy storage, sensors, drug delivery, and nonlinear optics. However, to date, there are very few examples of MOFs exploited on a commercial scale. Nevertheless, progress in MOF-related research is currently paving the way to new industrial opportunities, fostering applications and processes interconnecting fundamental chemistry with engineering and relevant sectors. Yet, the fabrication of porous MOF materials within resistant structures is a key challenge impeding their wide commercial use for processes such as adsorptive separation. In fact, the integration of nano-scale MOF crystallic structures into bulk components that can maintain the desired characteristics, i.e., size, shape, and mechanical stability, is a prerequisite for their wide practical use in many applications. At the same time, it requires sophisticated shaping techniques that can structure nano/micro-crystalline fine powders of MOFs into diverse types of macroscopic bodies such as monoliths. Under this framework, this review aims to bridge the gap between research advances and industrial necessities for fostering MOF applications into real life. Therefore, it critically explores recent advances in the shaping and production of MOF macro structures with regard to the binding materials that have received little attention to date, but have the potential to give new perspectives in the industrial applicability of MOFs. Moreover, it proposes future paths that can be adopted from both academy and industry and can further boost MOF exploitation.

Metal-organic frameworks and their composites for fuel and chemical production via CO2 conversion and water splitting.

Increase in the global energy demand has been leading to major energy crises in recent years. The use of excess fossil fuels for energy production is causing severe global warming, as well as energy shortage. To overcome the global energy crisis, the design of various chemical structures as efficient models for the generation of renewable energy fuels is very much crucial, and will limit the use of fossil fuels. Current challenges involve the design of Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) materials for this purpose to diminish the energy shortage. The large surface area, tunable pore environment, unique structural property and semiconducting nature of the highly porous MOF materials enhance their potential applications towards the production of enhanced energy fuels. This review is focused on the architecture of MOFs and their composites for fuels and essential chemicals production like hydrogen, methane, ethanol, methanol, acetic acid, and carbon monoxide, which can be used as renewable fuel energy sources to limit the use of fossil fuels, thereby reducing global warming.

Study on Selected Metal-Organic Framework-Based Catalysts for Cycloaddition Reaction of CO2 with Epoxides: A Highly Economic Solution for Carbon Capture and Utilization.

The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is growing rapidly due to fossil fuel combustion processes, heavy oil, coal, oil shelter, and exhausts from automobiles for energy generation, which lead to depletion of the ozone layer and consequently result in global warming. The realization of a carbon-neutral environment is the main focus of science and academic researchers of today. Several processes were employed to minimize carbon dioxide in the air, some of which include the utilization of non-fossil sources of energy like solar, nuclear, and biomass-based fuels. Consequently, these sources were reported to have a relatively high cost of production and maintenance. The applications of both homogeneous and heterogeneous processes in carbon capture and storage were investigated in recent years and the focus now is on the conversion of CO2 into useful chemicals and compounds. It was established that CO2 can undergo cycloaddition reaction with epoxides under the influence of special catalysts to give cyclic carbonates, which can be used as value-added chemicals at a different level of pharmaceutical and industrial applications. Among the various catalysts studied for this reaction, metal-organic frameworks are now on the frontline as a potential catalyst due to their special features and easy synthesis. Several metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts were studied for their application in transforming CO2 to organic carbonates using epoxides. Here, we report some recent studies of porous MOF materials and an in-depth discussion of two repeatedly used metal-organic frameworks as a catalyst in the conversion of CO2 to organic carbonates.

Rational design of a novel two-dimensional porous metal-organic framework material for efficient benzene sensor

As a common volatile organic compound, benzene (C6H6) exists in home decoration pollution gas widely, which causes great harm to the environment and human health. Therefore, it is necessary to rationally design advanced materials with high selectivity to detect and capture C6H6. Herein, combined with the d-band center theory and cohesive energy, a new two-dimensional metal-organic framework material, Ni-doped hexaaminobenzene-based coordination polymer (Ni-HAB-CP) is designed, and its application potential as a C6H6 sensor are systematically investigated by using first principles calculation. The result shows that Ni-HAB-CP has a strong adsorption for C6H6 without any additional method. In addition, Ni-HAB-CP can maintain good conductivity before and after adsorption, and C6H6 can be easily desorbed from the surface of Ni-HAB-CP by charge control. Moreover, the I-V curve calculated by Atomistix Toolkit (ATK) reveals that Ni-HAB-CP has high sensitivity and selectivity to C6H6. Hence, Ni-HAB-CP is expected to be used as a potential material for a highly efficient and recyclable C6H6 sensor in the future. The calculation and analysis methods used in this paper could provide a certain theoretical basis and reference for the future research of gas sensors.

Novel Nanoporous Ti-Phosphonate Metal–Organic Framework for Selective Sensing of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol and a Promising Electrode in an Energy Storage Device

Designing a multifunctional metal–organic framework (MOF) based on a novel ligand architecture for fluorescence sensing of explosives and energy storage applications is very challenging from the perspectives of sustainable chemistry. Herein, we report a novel tetradentate phosphonate ligand-based porous metal–organic framework material H8L-Ti-MOF, and it displayed selective recognition of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) or picric acid in aqueous phase with a detection limit of 3.6 μM (0.82 ppm). Interestingly, the fluorescence intensity of the MOF was completely quenched in the presence of TNP, whereas other nitroaromatics/nitroaliphatics did not have subtle effects on the fluorescence intensity profile of this Ti-MOF. Experimental and DFT studies shed light on the mechanistic pathway of the host–guest interaction indicating RET-PET-ICT to be the best possible mechanism for specific TNP quenching phenomenon. A semiconductor device in conjunction with an explosive sensing application makes our MOF-based system a self-sustainable one in its congener. Further, this Ti-MOF has been utilized as an electrode for an asymmetric supercapacitor device (20.03 F/cm2 @0.1 mA/cm2 current density) with a very high cycling stability. The energy storage capacity of this Ti-MOF has been reflected from glowing of a LED after charging the assembly.

Designer porous solids tackle separations of fluoroorganics

Porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials can be synthesized with precise spatial control of coordinatively unsaturated Mg²⁺ sites within the pore interior. Zick and co-workers show how these Mg²⁺ sites can dictate selective interactions between the MOF-based absorbent and molecules containing C-F bonds.

ZnO@ZIF-8 Core-Shell Structure Gas Sensors with Excellent Selectivity to H2.

As the energy crisis becomes worse, hydrogen as a clean energy source is more and more widely used in industrial production and people’s daily life. However, there are hidden dangers in hydrogen storage and transportation, because of its flammable and explosive features. Gas detection is the key to solving this problem. High quality sensors with more practical and commercial value must be able to accurately detect target gases in the environment. Emerging porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials can effectively improve the selectivity of sensors as a result of high surface area and coordinated pore structure. The application of MOFs for surface modification to improve the selectivity and sensitivity of metal oxides sensors to hydrogen has been widely investigated. However, the influence of MOF modified film thickness on the selectivity of hydrogen sensors is seldom studied. Moreover, the mechanism of the selectivity improvement of the sensors with MOF modified film is still unclear. In this paper, we prepared nano-sized ZnO particles by a homogeneous precipitation method. ZnO nanoparticle (NP) gas sensors were prepared by screen printing technology. Then a dense ZIF-8 film was grown on the surface of the gas sensor by hydrothermal synthesis. The morphology, the composition of the elements and the characters of the product were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is found that the ZIF-8 film grown for 4 h cannot form a dense core-shell structure. The thickness of ZIF-8 reaches 130 nm at 20 h. Through the detection and analysis of hydrogen (1000 ppm), ethanol (100 ppm) and acetone (50 ppm) from 150 °C to 290 °C, it is found that the response of the ZnO@ZIF-8 sensors to hydrogen has been significantly improved, while the response to ethanol and acetone was decreased. By comparing the change of the response coefficient, when the thickness of ZIF-8 is 130 nm, the gas sensor has a significantly improved selectivity to hydrogen at 230 °C. The continuous increase of the thickness tends to inhibit selectivity. The mechanism of selectivity improvement of the sensors with different thickness of the ZIF-8 films is discussed.

Introduction of continuous excited-state intermolecular proton transfer process into open yttrium-terephthalate framework for ratiometric fluorescent fluorion detection

Fluorion detection has drawn great attention due to fluorides are usually toxicity but widely involved in chemical, industrial and biological processes. Considering the porosity of porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials and fluoride ions may strongly influence the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, we propose that the introduction of ESIPT into MOFs should be promising for high-efficient fluorescence sensing of fluorions. In this work, the utilization of 2,5-dihydroxy terephthalic acid (DHBDC) with a pair of intramolecular hydrogen bonds as organic ligands led to a novel open yttrium-terephthalate framework (SNNU-300) as ESIPT-MOF fluorescence probe. Notably, the unique continuous ESIPT processes in the confined channels of SNNU-300 contribute a distinctive binate ratiometric fluorescent characteristics for fluoride ion detection. Quantitative fluorescence fluorion sensing experiments indicate SNNU-300 probe has high selectivity and sensitivity (Ksv ​= ​2.3 ​× ​104 ​M−1) and extra-low LOD value (1.2 ​× ​10−6 ​M).
