Mechanical performance of porous concrete pavement containing nano black rice husk ash

This paper presents an experimental research on the performance of nano black rice husk ash on the porous concrete pavement properties. The performance of the porous concrete pavement mixtures was investigated based on their compressive strength, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strength. The results indicated that using nano material from black rice husk ash improved the mechanical properties of porous concrete pavement. In addition, the result of compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength was increased with increasing in curing age. Finally, porous concrete pavement with 10% replacement levels exhibited an excellent performance with good strength compared to others.

Effect of Nano Silica on the Physical Property of Porous Concrete Pavement

Rice husk can be categorized as an organic waste material from paddy industries. Silica is a major inorganic element of the rice husk. The aim of present study is to evaluate the effect of Nano silica on the physical properties of porous concrete pavement. Rice husk has been burned in the furnace (650°C for 6 hours) and ground for four different grinding times (33, 48, 63 and 81 hours). Five types of mixes were prepared to evaluate the different Nano silica grinding time. A Nano silica dosage of 10% by weight of binder was used throughout the experiments. The physical properties were examined through compressive strength, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray fluorescence. The experimental results indicate that the different Nano size gives a different effect to porous concrete strength. Based on the results obtained, Nano silica ground for 63 hours (65.84nm) gives the best result and performance to porous concrete pavement specimens.

Development of permeability test method for porous concrete block pavement materials considering clogging

Pervious pavement has been used widely due to efficient hydrological characteristics such as reduction of runoff during floods, providing delay of rainwater into sewer systems and ground water quality improvement. However, clogging prevents it from functioning properly due to sedimentation after a short period of service, which results to poor permeability and performance of pervious pavement. In this study, the causes of clogging were investigated and a clogging simulator was developed in order to evaluate the sustainable permeability of porous concrete block pavement in advance. Furthermore, a test method for verifying the sustainability of infiltration which can predict and assess the permeability performance by years of service was proposed. In addition, the penetration of contaminants also varies depending on vehicle vibration and the rainwater that permeates together with it. It was found that the pores were easily clogged with the vibration frequency increased, but with the amount of contaminants increased to a degree clogging had less influence on vibration. When various types of porous concrete block pavers were evaluated with the proposed sustainable permeability test method, the coefficient of permeability before and after the test have shown very high correlation.

STRENGTH OF POROUS CONCRETE PAVEMENT AT DIFFERENT CURING METHODS

Porous concrete pavement has been used in some countries as a solution to environmental problems. Contrary to conventional concrete pavement, there is still lack of knowledge in some areas of production and performance of porous concrete pavement. One of the issue concern is curing conditions. These greatly affect the performance of porous concrete pavement. This paper elaborates the experimental results examining the influence of curing method and makes a comparison between five different curing methods on the strength of porous concrete pavement specimens. The properties analyzed include compressive strength, tensile splitting strength and flexural strength. The experimental results indicate that the different curing methods give a different effect to concrete strength. Based on the results obtained in this experiment, curing method by using polyethylene bag promise a good result and better performance to porous concrete pavement specimen strength.

Utilization of Nano Silica as Cement Paste in Mortar and Porous Concrete Pavement

The high percentage of porosity in porous concrete pavement tends to decrease its strength. In concrete industry, nano silica is one of the most popular materials that will improve the properties of cementitious materials. This paper, prepared to review the effect of nano silica in cement paste and mortar related to porous concrete pavement. It was found that, by incorporating nano silica with the right composition in cement paste and mortar, it will improve their mechanical properties. By incorporating nano silica in the mixture, it can be predicted that the strengthening effect of nano silica would be further enhanced in porous concrete because the nano silica improve not only the cement paste, but also the interface between paste and aggregate.

Early Age Behavior of Thin Porous Concrete Pavement for Bicycle Road due to Environmental Loading

Due to the growing the standard of living, bicycle interest has increased which concerns a negative effect in transportation. Although, bicycle road construction is increasing continuously, distress problem is occurred by empirical design which is conventionally used. To determine the optimum joint spacing, thin porous concrete pavement was constructed and measured with vibrating wire strain gauges. Joint spacing is varied in 1.5m, 3.0m, 6.0m intervals, with slab thickness 7cm. Early age behavior of thin porous concrete pavement is measured. As expected, more restraint occurred at the longer slabs.

A Review of Porous Concrete Pavement: Applications and Engineering Properties

Porous concrete technology has been used since 1970s in various parts of the United State as an option to complex drainage systems and water retention areas.Porous concrete pavements have become popular as an effective stormwater management device to control the stormwater runoff in pavement. The objective of this paper is to study a pre-review on Porous concrete pavement and it previous laboratory study. From the literature, it was found that, the strength of the porous concrete pavementstill need to improve. To improve the strength of the porous concrete, various additive have been study as a part of porous concrete mix and yetthe optimum condition to produce good porous concrete still not been established. From the previous study, it was found that to prepare the porous concrete laboratory specimen, the use of standard Proctor hammer (2.5kg) and Pneumatic press (70 kPa compaction effort) resulted in the closest properties to the field porous concrete.

Porous Concrete Pavement Containing Nano-Silica: Pre-Review

Porous concrete pavement is being used as one of the solution to decrease the storm water runoff by capturing and allowing rain water to drain into the land surface. The main problem of porous concrete pavement is the strength itself. The objective of this paper is to review the use and performance of nanosilica in porous concrete pavement. From the literature review of the previous research, it was found that the conventional porous concrete pavement doesn't has good strength for pavement purpose. An addition of nanomaterial will improve the physical and chemical properties of the porous concrete pavement.

Experimental Study on Sound Absorption Property of Porous Concrete Pavement Layer

In this paper, Sound absorption property tests of porous concrete pavement specimens which porosity of 15%, respectively, 17%, 20%, 22%,25% and a thickness of 40mm, 50mm, 60mm have been done by standing wave tube in different frequencies. The experimental results showed that the different porosity specimens sound absorption capacity shows little difference in low-frequency sound. As the porosity of porous concrete pavement layer specimen increases, the absorption coefficient increases. Under the same porosity as the porous concrete pavement thickness increases, the sound absorption coefficient in low-frequency tends to increase, and in high-frequency, it tends to decrease. The mix design of porous concrete pavement should be considered about permeability, strength, acoustic performance and other factors. The paper recommends porous concrete pavement porosity ranges 17-22%.

Noise Evaluation of Concrete Pavement

In order to evaluate noise characteristic of concrete pavements with different texture, specimens were prepared carefully by varying groove parameters, such as groove width and space between grooves. Employing tire impact method, the noise level and noise spectrum of different pavements were analyzed. The results indicate that the noise level of transverse grooved concrete pavement is the greatest, and the followings are glossy concrete pavement and longitudinal grooved concrete pavement, porous concrete pavement has the lowest noise level. For grooved pavement, the noise level is promoted with increasing the space between grooves. Besides that, the noise level of transverse grooved concrete pavement becomes greater as the groove width increases. For longitudinal grooved pavement, there is a contrary tendency. It is porous concrete pavement for a frequency larger than 1600HZ. In the whole frequency range, the noise-reduction ability of transverse grooved concrete pavement is the worst.

Reduction of Tire-Pavement Noise by Porous Concrete Pavement

AbstractThis study investigates the effect of Portland cement porous concrete on tire-pavement noise reduction. The acoustical absorption coefficients were measured in the laboratory for porous concrete materials representing combinations of various maximum aggregate sizes, gradation, layer thickness, and composition layers. The laboratory results indicated that porous concrete with a maximum aggregate size of 9.5 mm had the highest acoustical absorption coefficient. They also showed that the peak absorption coefficient depends on the mixture characteristics and the thickness of the specimen. A thickness of 80 mm had optimum absorption. The results from the laboratory study were used to design and build a test road in the field with two test cells. Finishing methods and compressive strength-void ratio relationships of in-situ porous concrete pavement

In this paper, the effect of finishing methods on the relationships between compressive strength, permeability and void ratio of porous concrete (POC) or pervious concrete is discussed, using core specimens taken from actually constructed POC pavement. To attain reliable performance in the construction work, a newly designed finisher for POC is developed, and the performances as well as methods for controlling void ratio are examined. The POC pavements were finished with three finishing methods viz., no finishing, finishing with standard compactor and finishing with prototype compactor. The results show that the prototype POC finisher is efficient in controlling the void ratio and the quality of POC pavements. The relationships between compressive strength as well as permeability and void ratio of the in-situ POC pavements finished by the prototype machine were obtained. They are slightly different from the laboratory test results owing mainly to the mold effect and the differences in compaction modes.

Design and Maintenance of Porous Concrete Pavement

Porous concrete is commonly used by ecologically sound construction companies, since it helps to manage water runoff in sustainable way. Many so-called “green” builders promote the use of porous concrete in their projects [1]. Although porous concrete is a viable material that has the potential to replace the use of traditional concrete pavements in situations where heavy traffic is limited, porous concrete has been predominantly used in non-pavements applications, with only a limited use in pavements applications. This paper provides a clear indication of design and maintenance of porous concrete in pavements applications. Various designs of porous concrete pavement were schematized and explained.

Sound absorption characteristics of porous asphalt concrete pavements

This study investigates the sound absorption characteristics of porous asphalt concrete (PAC) pavements using an impedance tube to assess noise reduction performance. It is clearly shown that an improved attenuation of sound wave energy is achieved by adjusting the air void content, aggregate gradation, and PAC pavement thickness, based on measurements of sound absorption coefficients. In addition, traffic noise measurements taken from PAC pavements in the field are compared to those taken from dense-graded asphalt concrete (DGAC), which is widely used in pavement materials.

Porous Concrete Pavements

A study evaluating the mechanical and hydraulic properties of several porous concrete pavement mix designs is presented. Objectives of the study were to examine various mix designs with constituents available in Vermont, evaluate compressive strength and hydraulic conductivity of laboratory and field-cured specimens, compare results with those found in the literature, and characterize the effects of specimen size on measured parameters. To evaluate the role of sample size on these testing procedures, experiments were performed on specimens of three diameters: 76.2 mm (3 in.), 101.6 mm (4 in.), and 152.4 mm (6 in.). Multiple specimens were tested for a particular size. A specimen size of 101.6 mm (4 in.) was found to be optimal for the experiments performed and is therefore recommended. The measured compressive strength and hydraulic conductivity for the various mix designs showed a clear linear dependence on sample density. Also, the measured values fall within the expected range obtained from a review of the literature. Parametric studies included effects of the water-to-cement ratio and admixtures. Generally, increased water content yielded a higher density, higher compressive strength, and reduced hydraulic conductivity. Admixtures such as a high-range water reducer and viscosity modifying admixture had insignificant effects on the compressive strength, hydraulic conductivity, and workability of the porous concrete mixes examined. Field cores displayed a much greater variability in hydraulic conductivity than that of laboratory-prepared specimens, largely because of differences in compaction effort that are inherent to porous concrete placement in the field.

住空間における意匠性に配慮した複層ポーラスコンクリート歩道の施工実験

ポーラスコンクリートは, 透水性, 保水性, 吸音性, 熱緩和特性などの多くの機能を持っことから, 建築外構や都市街区に適用することにより, 住空間における環境負荷の低減や快適性の向上に役立てることが期待されている。本報告では, ポーラスコンクリートの現場施工を容易にし, かっ機能と付加価値を向上させることのできる複層 (基層+表層) ポーラスコンクリートの一形態を提案し, これを適用して建物周囲の歩道を現場打設により施工した事例を紹介する。実施工とともに実験室実験を行い, 基層に用いる比較的低い強度のポーラスコンクリートは, 透水性歩道に十分な性能を有し, 製造から打設まで比較的管理しやすいこと, また, 歩道の表層を細粒度の樹脂製ポーラス硬化体とすることにより, ポーラスコンクリート単体で施工した歩道の意匠性や質感を改善できることなどを確認した。

ポーラスコンクリート舗装の品質特性と供用性に関する報告

高空隙なセメントコンクリートによるポーラスコンクリートは, 排水性アスファルト混合物に比べて高い耐久性と透・排水性や低騒音性といった機能を併せ持つため, 高機能舗装としての適用が注目されている。実用化へ向け, ポーラスコンクリートを車道へ適用するための材料・施工技術の実験的検討を行い, 一般舗装や排水性舗装の要求性能を満足するポーラスコンクリート舗装の基本技術はほぼ確立されたといえる。本報告は, 車道用ポーラスコンクリートの品質およびポーラスコンクリート舗装の供用性を整理し, 耐久性, 雨天時の走行安全性, 沿道環境保全および熱環境緩和効果など本舗装がもたらす効果について述べたものである。
