Ecological drivers of hunter-gatherer lithic technology from the Middle and Later Stone Age in Central Africa

Central Africa is a key region for examining patterns of hunter-gatherer inhabitation and engagement with ecological diversity and environmental change. In contrast to adjacent regions, however, the archaeological record of prehistoric hunter-gatherer populations in Central Africa is underrepresented in studies of recent human evolution. This limited engagement with Central African archaeological records in part stems from the complexities of identifying, excavating, and dating hunter-gatherer sites in what are today often heavily forested environments, a focus on named stone tool industries from undated sites to structure the record, and highly limited means to associate dated hunter-gatherer occupations with proxy records of environmental conditions. Here, we present a novel synthesis of prehistoric hunter-gatherer stone tool assemblages from dated Central African sites and use climate model datasets to illuminate the environmental and ecological landscapes in which they were deployed. Our results suggest a significant ecological shift occurred from 14,000 years ago onwards, associated with a greater engagement with broadleaf forests. We examine the extent to which a range of geographic and paleoclimatic drivers can explain patterns of gross assemblage composition and the appearance of individual lithic technologies highlighting the significant role of changes in altitude, precipitation, seasonality, and ecology. Notably, considerable continuity can be observed between the habitat ranges of contemporary hunter-gatherer populations in Central Africa and prehistoric occupations that significantly precede the appearance of farming lifeways in the region.

Risk factors for subclinical atherosclerosis in HIV-infected patients in Burundi: A cross sectional study

Background and Aims : Several studies have demonstrated higher incidence, prevalence and progression of subclinical atherosclerosis in HIV infected individuals. Chronic disease of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are now approaching those of the general population. Previous, in vitro studies shown that HIV causes arterial injuries resulting in inflammation and atherosclerosis but direct relationship between HIV infection clinical stages and lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) remain controversial. No study assessed, with an accurate method, both the prevalence of LEAD and the influence of HIV severity on LEAD in HIV outpatients in Central Africa.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1250 HIV-infected outpatients in Burundi. Inclusion criteria were as follows: age ≥ 20 years, positive HIV status, and currently receiving ART. Clinical data were extracted from Centre records. Personal information and details of PAD-related symptoms were obtained through face-to-face interviews. All patients underwent ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurement and LEAD was diagnosed by ABI≤0.9.Results: The prevalence of LEAD was 14.72 % (CI 95%: 13.2-22.1). The mean age was 42, 8±7, 4 years. On multivariable analysis, factors associated with LEAD were diabetes (OR= 1.7; 95% CI: 1.09–2.79), obesity (OR=2.5, 95% CI: 1.27–5.02) and stage IV HIV clinical infection (OR=4.7, 95% CI: 2.29–9.85).Conclusions: This is the first study performed on a large HIV population in Central Africa, reporting high LEAD prevalence. It underlines the influence of HIV infection on peripheral atherosclerosis at latest clinical stage and the need for LEAD screening in HIV-infected patients. Challenges of electrochemistry research in Central Africa: The case of Cameroon

Electrochemistry is defined as the science which permits the transformation of matter using electricity. For many decades, this branch of chemistry has allowed substantial development in western world industries. The most emblematic example is the development of batteries, devices that find applications in almost all domains of our daily life. This review aims to focus on the state of electrochemistry in Central Africa; how electrochemistry is taught and used to improve the daily life of the population in Central Africa are the questions that we will endeavor to answer. We will scrutinize the different research groups in Central Africa having electrochemistry as their first line of research and an evaluation of their achievements so far will be performed, in addition to analyzing their societal impact.

HIV clinical stages and lower extremity arterial disease among HIV infected outpatients in Burundi

Chronic disease of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are now approaching those of the general population. Previous, in vitro studies shown that HIV causes arterial injuries resulting in inflammation and atherosclerosis but direct relationship between HIV infection clinical stages and lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) remain controversial. No study assessed, with an accurate method, both the prevalence of LEAD and the influence of HIV severity on LEAD in HIV outpatients in Central Africa. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 HIV-infected outpatients, aged ≥ 40 years in Bujumbura, Burundi. All patients underwent ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurement and LEAD was diagnosed by ABI ≤ 0.9. The prevalence of LEAD was 17.3% (CI 95% 13.2–22.1). The mean age was 49.6 ± 7.1 years. On multivariable analysis, factors associated with LEAD were hypertension (OR = 2.42; 95% CI 1.10–5.80), and stage IV HIV clinical infection (OR = 4.92, 95% CI 1.19–20.36). This is the first study performed on a large HIV population in Central Africa, reporting high LEAD prevalence. It underlines the influence of HIV infection on peripheral atherosclerosis at latest clinical stages and the need for LEAD screening in HIV-infected patients.

La microfinance en zones rurales : quel bilan en Afrique Centrale ?

The objective of this article is to present the review of microfinance by analysing its impact on the socio-economic living conditions of rural populations in Central Africa, where micro-projects are still to finance. To achieve this objective, a multiple regression was applied to the data collected in Global Findex database. Analyses show that the effects of microfinance in rural areas in Central Africa are negligible. It can be seen that the opening of a bank account improves the living conditions of the villagers while microcredit significantly deteriorates the Human Development Index of these populations. Recipients of microfinance services continue to face difficulties while financing their own health care, paying their bills and are unable to save money. The particularity of this study is that, the impact of microfinance on the living conditions of village populations in central Africa is analysed.

Modular nature of simian foamy virus genomes and their evolutionary history.

Among all known retroviruses, foamy viruses (FVs) have the most stable virus–host co-speciation history, co-diverging in concert with their vertebrate hosts for hundreds of millions of years. However, detailed molecular analyses indicate that different parts of their genome might have different evolutionary histories. While their polymerase gene displays a robust and straightforward virus–host co-speciation pattern, the evolutionary history of their envelope (env) gene, is much more complicated. Here, we report eleven new FV env sequences in two mandrill populations in Central Africa, geographically separated by the Ogooué River into the North and the South populations. Phylogenetic reconstruction of the polymerase gene shows that the two virus populations are distinct, and each contains two variants of env genes co-existing with one another. The distinction between the two env variants can be mapped to the surface domain, flanked by two recombination hotspots, as previously reported for chimpanzee and gorilla FVs. Our analyses suggest that the two env variants originated during the diversification of Old World monkeys and apes, ∼30 million years ago. We also show that this env gene region forms two phylogenetically distinct clades, each displaying a host co-divergence and geographical separation pattern, while the rest of the genome of the two strains is phylogenetically indistinguishable in each of the host-specific groups. We propose possible evolutionary mechanisms to explain the modular nature of the FV genome.

Forest elephant movement and habitat use in a tropical forest-grassland mosaic in Gabon.

Poaching of forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) for ivory has decimated their populations in Central Africa. Studying elephant movement can provide insight into habitat and resource use to reveal where, when, and why they move and guide conservation efforts. We fitted 17 forest elephants with global positioning system (GPS) collars in 2015 and 2016 in the tropical forest-grassland mosaic of the Wonga Wongué Presidential Reserve (WW), Gabon. Using the location data, we quantified movement distances, home ranges, and habitat use to examine the environmental drivers of elephant movements and predict where elephants occur spatially and temporally. Forest elephants, on average, traveled 2,840 km annually and had home ranges of 713 km2, with males covering significantly larger home ranges than females. Forest elephants demonstrated both daily and seasonal movement patterns. Daily, they moved between forest and grassland at dawn and dusk. Seasonally, they spent proportionally more time in grassland than forest during the short-wet season when grasses recruit. Forest elephants also traveled faster during the short-wet season when fruit availability was greatest, likely reflecting long, direct movements to preferred fruiting tree species. Forest elephants tended to select areas with high tree and shrub density that afford cover and browse. When villages occurred in their home ranges elephants spent a disproportionate amount of time near them, particularly in the dry season, probably for access to agricultural crops and preferred habitat. Given the importance of the grassland habitat for elephants, maintenance of the forest-grassland matrix is a conservation priority in WW. Law enforcement, outreach, and education should focus on areas of potential human-elephant conflict near villages along the borders of the reserve. GPS-tracking should be extended into multi-use areas in the peripheries of protected areas to evaluate the effects of human disturbance on elephant movements and to maintain connectivity among elephant populations in Gabon.

Automated detection of low-frequency rumbles of forest elephants: A critical tool for their conservation.

African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) occupy large ranges in dense tropical forests and often use far-reaching vocal signals to coordinate social behavior. Elephant populations in Central Africa are in crisis, having declined by more than 60% in the last decade. Methods currently used to monitor these populations are expensive and time-intensive, though acoustic monitoring technology may offer an effective alternative if signals of interest can be efficiently extracted from the sound stream. This paper proposes an automated elephant call detection algorithm that was tested on nearly 4000 h of field recordings collected from five forest clearings in Central Africa, including sites both inside protected areas and in logging concessions. Recordings were obtained in different seasons, years, and under diverse weather conditions. The detector achieved an 83.2% true positive rate when the false positive rate is 5.5% (approximately 20 false positives per hour). These results suggest that this algorithm can enable analysis of long-term recording datasets or facilitate near-real-time monitoring of elephants in a wide range of settings and conditions.

Association between sickle cell anemia and alpha thalassemia reveals a high prevalence of the α3.7 triplication in congolese patients than in worldwide series.

Information about the association with alpha thalassemia in sickle cell patients is unknown in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There is very little data on the alpha thalassemia in patients suffering from sickle cell anemia in Central Africa, and their consequences on the clinical expression of the disease. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 106 sickle cell patients living in the country's capital Kinshasa. The diagnosis of sickle cell anemia was confirmed with a molecular test using PCR-RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) technique. The diagnosis of thalassemia was performed by the technique of multiplex ligation dependent probe amplification. The mean age of our patients was 22.4±13.6years. The α3.7 heterozygous deletion, the α3.7 homozygous deletion and the α3.7 triplication were respectively encountered in 23.6%, 25.5% , and 11.3% of patients. Patients with normal αα/αα genotype represented 39.6% of the study population. The average of severe vaso-occlusive crises, the rates of blood transfusions per year, the rate of osteonecrosis, cholelithiasis and leg ulcers were significantly lower in the group of patients with α3.7 homozygous deletion and α3.7 triplication. The prevalence of α3.7 triplication was higher in sickle cell patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo than in worldwide series. The α3.7 triplication and α3.7 homozygous deletion were associated with less severe forms of the Sickle cell anemia in Congolese patients. These results showed the need to investigate systematically the alpha-globin gene mutations in sickle cell population in Central Africa.

Cocirculation of Two env Molecular Variants, of Possible Recombinant Origin, in Gorilla and Chimpanzee Simian Foamy Virus Strains from Central Africa

Simian foamy virus (SFV) is a ubiquitous retrovirus in nonhuman primates (NHPs) that can be transmitted to humans, mostly through severe bites. In the past few years, our laboratory has identified more than 50 hunters from central Africa infected with zoonotic SFVs. Analysis of the complete sequences of five SFVs obtained from these individuals revealed that env was the most variable gene. Furthermore, recombinant SFV strains, some of which involve sequences in the env gene, were recently identified. Here, we investigated the variability of the env genes of zoonotic SFV strains and searched for possible recombinants. We sequenced the complete env gene or its surface glycoprotein region (SU) from DNA amplified from the blood of (i) a series of 40 individuals from Cameroon or Gabon infected with a gorilla or chimpanzee foamy virus (FV) strain and (ii) 1 gorilla and 3 infected chimpanzees living in the same areas as these hunters. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the existence of two env variants among both the gorilla and chimpanzee FV strains that were present in zoonotic and NHP strains. These variants differ greatly (>30% variability) in a 753-bp-long region located in the receptor-binding domain of SU, whereas the rest of the gene is very conserved. Although the organizations of the Env protein sequences are similar, the potential glycosylation patterns differ between variants. Analysis of recombination suggests that the variants emerged through recombination between different strains, although all parental strains could not be identified. SFV infection in humans is a great example of a zoonotic retroviral infection that has not spread among human populations, in contrast to human immunodeficiency viruses (HIVs) and human T-lymphotropic viruses (HTLVs). Recombination was a major mechanism leading to the emergence of HIV. Here, we show that two SFV molecular envelope gene variants circulate among ape populations in Central Africa and that both can be transmitted to humans. These variants differ greatly in the SU region that corresponds to the part of the Env protein in contact with the environment. These variants may have emerged through recombination between SFV strains infecting different NHP species.

Use of tool sets by chimpanzees for multiple purposes in Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, Gabon.

We report our recent findings on the use of tool sets by chimpanzees in Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, Gabon. Direct observations and evidences left by chimpanzees showed that chimpanzees used sticks as pounders, enlargers, and collectors to extract honey from beehives of stingless bees (Meliponula sp.), which may correspond to those previously found in the same site for fishing termites and to those found in Loango National Park, Gabon. However, we observed chimpanzees using a similar set of tools for hunting a medium-sized mammal (possibly mongoose) that hid inside a log. This is the first report of hunting with tools by a chimpanzee population in Central Africa. Chimpanzees may recognize the multiple functions and applicability of tools (extracting honey and driving prey), although it is still a preliminary speculation. Our findings may provide us a new insight on the chimpanzee's flexibility of tool use and cognitive abilities of complex food gathering.

Diagnosing the demographic balance of two light-demanding tree species populations in central Africa from their diameter distribution

The diameter distribution of a tree species population in a natural forest reflects its demographic dynamics and the impact of past disturbances. A modal diameter distribution can be the mark of a demographic imbalance or it can be the consequence of a particular growth pattern. By comparing the observed diameter distribution with the one that follows from a reference growth model under the hypothesis of demographic balance, we diagnosed demographic balance. In a forest concession in Gabon before logging, an unbalanced diameter distribution was found for Aucoumea klaineana, a long-lived pioneer species and also a valuable commercial species. The Aucoumea klaineana population consisted of old trees without meaningful recruitment, thus indicating an ageing, declining population. In contrast, in the same concession, a balanced diameter distribution was found for Lophira alata, a pioneer to moderate light-demanding species. The history of this forest concession, once heavily populated and subsequently depleted from human perturbation (shifting cultivation), can be used to interpret these demographic statuses. These results reinforce the view of a forest that is constantly changing and shaped by past human perturbations, with the implication for its conservation that some kind of perturbation should be maintained.

Human-associated Staphylococcus aureus strains within great ape populations in Central Africa (Gabon)

AbstractThe risk of serious infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus is well-known. However, most studies regarding the distribution of (clinically relevant) S. aureus among humans and animals took place in the western hemisphere and only limited data are available from (Central) Africa. In this context, recent studies focused on S. aureus strains in humans and primates, but the question of whether humans and monkeys share related S. aureus strains or may interchange strains remained largely unsolved. In this study we aimed to evaluate the distribution and spread of human-like S. aureus strains among great apes living in captivity. Therefore, a primate facility at the International Centre for Medical Research of Franceville (Gabon) was screened. We detected among the primates a common human S. aureus strain, belonging to the spa-type t148. It was isolated from three different individuals of the western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), of which one individual showed a large necrotizing wound. This animal died, most probably of a staphylococcal sepsis. Additionally, we discovered the t148 type among chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) that were settled in the immediate neighbourhood of the infected gorillas. A detailed analysis by pulsed field gel electrophoresis showed that the gorilla and chimpanzee isolates represented two closely related strains. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a human-associated S. aureus strain causing disease in great apes. The simultaneous detection in gorillas and chimpanzees indicated an interspecies transmission of this S. aureus strain. Our results recommend that protection of wild animals must not only be based on habitat conservation, but also on the assessment of the risk of contact with human pathogens.

Association Between a Low Ankle–Brachial Index and Dementia in a General Elderly Population in Central Africa (Epidemiology of Dementia in Central Africa Study)

To investigate the association between peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and dementia in native elderly African populations. Two successive door-to-door cross-sectional surveys in the general population. Representative districts of Bangui (Central African Republic) and Brazzaville (Republic of Congo). Population aged 65 and older. Peripheral arterial disease was defined as an ankle-brachial index (ABI) of 0.90 or less. Cognitive screening was performed using the Community Screening Interview for Dementia and the Five-Word Test. Diagnosis of dementia was confirmed after further neuropsychological tests and neurological examination according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, criteria. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to quantify the association between PAD and dementia in those populations, with adjustments for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other variables. A significant association was observed between PAD and prevalent dementia (odds ratio (OR) = 2.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.44-4.13, P = .001), even after adjustment for age, city, sex, CVD risk factors, education, and depressive disorders (OR = 2.37, 95% CI = 1.31-4.26, P = .004). This association was stronger with lower ABI. These findings support the hypothesis of a link between atherosclerosis (represented by a low ABI) and cognitive disorders in native Africans and are similar to previous reports in African Americans and other ethnic groups.

Haematological and biochemical reference intervals for infants and children in Gabon

To establish reference intervals for major haematological and biochemical parameters in Gabonese infants and children. The reference sample population consisted of 226 healthy infants (4-9 weeks of age) and 185 healthy children (18-60 months of age). Basic red cell parameters as well as total and differential white blood cell counts were performed. Clinical chemistry parameters consisted of glutamate-pyruvic transaminase and creatinine, and total bilirubin was measured in children. Statistical analysis was based on the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Nonparametric methods were used to determine 95% reference limits and their 90% confidence intervals. Compared to European populations, values for several red cell parameters (haemoglobin, haematocrit, red blood cell count, mean corpuscular volume) were lower and platelet counts were higher. Eosinophils were higher in the older age group, most likely caused by intestinal helminths. The study confirms the importance of establishing reference limits for local populations. The reference ranges could be used as a benchmark for similar populations in Central Africa.

Limited dispersal in mobile hunter–gatherer Baka Pygmies

Hunter-gatherer Pygmies from Central Africa are described as being extremely mobile. Using neutral genetic markers and population genetics theory, we explored the dispersal behaviour of the Baka Pygmies from Cameroon, one of the largest Pygmy populations in Central Africa. We found a strong correlation between genetic and geographical distances: a pattern of isolation by distance arising from limited parent-offspring dispersal. Our study suggests that mobile hunter-gatherers do not necessarily disperse over wide geographical areas.

Circulation of human influenza viruses and emergence of Oseltamivir-resistant A(H1N1) viruses in Cameroon, Central Africa

BackgroundWhile influenza surveillance has increased in most developing countries in the last few years, little influenza surveillance has been carried out in sub-Saharan Africa and no information is available in Central Africa. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of influenza viruses circulating in Yaounde, Cameroon and determine their antigenic and genetic characteristics.MethodsThroat and/or nasal swabs were collected from November 2007 to October 2008 from outpatients with influenza-like illness (ILI) in Yaounde, Cameroon and analyzed by two different techniques: a one-step real time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and virus isolation in MDCK cells. Typing and subtyping of virus isolates was performed by hemagglutination inhibition (HI), and viruses were sent to the WHO Collaborating Centre in London, UK for further characterization and analyses of antiviral resistance by enzyme inhibition assay and nucleotide sequencing.ResultsA total of 238 patients with ILI were sampled. During this period 70 (29%) samples were positive for influenza by RT-PCR, of which only 26 (11%) were positive by virus isolation. By HI assay, 20 of the 26 isolates were influenza type A (10 H3N2 and 10 H1N1) and 6 were influenza type B (2 B/Victoria/2/87 lineage and 4 B/Yagamata/16/88 lineage). Seven (70%) of the H1N1 isolates were shown to be resistant to oseltamivir due to a H275Y mutation.ConclusionsThis study confirmed the circulation of influenza A(H1N1), A(H3N2) and B viruses in the human population in Central Africa and describes the emergence of oseltamivir-resistant A(H1N1) viruses in Central Africa.

Human T-Lymphotropic Viruses Evolution Possibly Explained by Primate Deltaretrovirus Geographical Segregation

The primate T cell lymphotropic virus group comprises pathogenic and apathogenic agents found in human and simian hosts. Up to date, three types of the simian T cell lymphotropic virus/STLV and four types of the human T cell lymphotropic virus/HTLV have been isolated and characterized from non human primates and from human hosts respectively. We have not found evidences of STLV-1 infection among new world monkeys and besides fi ndings of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infection among brazilian mixed ethnic populations and Amerindians respectively, some unresolved HTLV inde- terminate-Western blot results prevailed among human groups of different ethnic background. Based on recent serologic detection, isolation and characterization of HTLV-3 and HTLV-4 among African populations in central Africa and additional unrefutable evidences of early human migration from Africa and Australia to the American continent previously of Asiatic population migration lead us to hypothesize that human descendents of mixed Amerinds and Africans or remaining Africans explain the very frequent presence of Western blot-indeterminate results for HTLV-1/2 that we and other groups have been detecting and also the unusual absence of HTLV-2 infection among some relatively homogeneous ethnic native human populations in the American continent.

Business and British Decolonisation: Sir Ronald Prain, the Mining Industry and the Central African Federation

One of the most intractable challenges to emerge during British decolonisation was the need to reconcile the competing political aspirations of settler and African populations in Central Africa. During the 1950s Britain sought to construct a ‘multiracial’ Central African Federation, financed largely by Northern Rhodesia's copper industry. Of the two major mining groups involved, the Rhodesian Selection Trust, under the chairmanship of Sir Ronald Prain, arguably played an important and unusual role in the Federation's politics and eventual demise. Having supported the Federation at its inception, Prain quickly reassessed the Federal project and concluded that its expected benefits had failed to materialise, and that a new political orientation was necessary for Northern Rhodesia, his companies' host country. Whereas expatriate business interests were often ‘weak’ political actors during decolonisation, Prain, through pragmatic readjustment, evolved a forward-thinking strategy of accommodation to the rise of African nationalism, and to the corresponding eclipse of settler power. Adapting with unusual success to political change, he became actively involved in the political developments which led to Zambian independence in 1964.

The most common haplotype (DYS19-15, DYS389I-13, DYS389II-30, DYS390-21, DYS391-10, DYS392-11, DYS393-13, DYS385I/II-15,17) was shared by 5.5% of individuals. In the Bantu population in Central Africa, the haplotype diversity and the discrimination capacity of Y-STR may be estimated at 99.14% and 0.5333, respectively.
