Cataclysmic variables around the period-bounce: An eROSITA-enhanced multiwavelength catalog

Context. Cataclysmic variables (CVs) with degenerate donors that have evolved past the period minimum are predicted to make up a great portion of the CV population, namely, between 40% and 80%. However, either due to shortcomings in the models or the intrinsic faintness of these strongly evolved systems, only a few of these so-called “period-bouncers” have been confidently identified thus far. Aims. We compiled a multiwavelength catalog of period-bouncers and CVs around the period minimum from the literature to provide an in-depth characterization of the elusive subclass of period-bounce CVs that will support the identification of new candidates. Methods. We combined recently published or archival multiwavelength data with new X-ray observations from the all-sky surveys carried out with the extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) on board the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma spacecraft (SRG). Our catalog comprises 192 CVs around the period minimum, chosen as likely period-bounce candidates based on reported short orbital periods and low donor mass. This sample helped us establish specific selection parameters, which were used to compile a “scorecard” that rates the likelihood that a particular system is a period-bouncer. Results. Our “scorecard” correctly assigns high scores to the already confirmed period-bouncers in our literature catalog. It has also identified 103 additional strong period-bounce candidates in the literature that had not previously been classified as such. We established two selection cuts based on the X-ray-to-optical flux ratio (−1.21 ≤ log(Fx/Fopt) ≤ 0) and the typical X-ray luminosity (log(Lx,bol) ≤ 30.4 [erg s−1]) observed from the eight period-bouncers that have already been confirmed with eROSITA data. These X-ray selection cuts led to the updated categorization of seven systems as new period-bouncers, increasing their known population to 24 systems in total. Conclusions. Our multiwavelength catalog of CVs around the period minimum drawn from the literature, together with X-ray data from eROSITA, has resulted in a ~40% increase in the population of period-bouncers. Both the catalog and “scorecard” we constructed will aid in future searches for new period-bounce candidates. These tools will contribute to the goal of resolving the discrepancy between the predicted high number of period-bouncers and the low number of these systems successfully observed to date.

Orbital period change of SW Sex star TT Tri

Abstract SW Sex-type stars are the dominate population of cataclysmic variables (CVs) just above the period gap and are vital for understanding of CV evolution. We have monitored TT Tri for nearly 15 yr, and more observations yield a more reliable estimation for its orbital period variation. In this work, we present a detailed analysis about its orbital period variation. TT Tri experiences a rapid period decay with a decay rate of −5.67 × 10−11 s/s plus a period oscillation at about 9.6 years. The oscillation could be caused by the magnetic activities of the low-mass star or/and a circumbinary body, while the rapid period decrease can not be accounted for by the magnetic braking or even including an intensive disk wind. We find that mass overflow though the L3 point can take the angular momentum away effectively and that this mass overflow could account for the rapid period decay observed in TT Tri. We propose that this kind of angular momentum loss may play a crucial role in CV evolution, and further research is in progress.

Reevaluating the Origin of Detectable Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters: Testing the Importance of Dynamics

Based on the current detectable cataclysmic variable (CV) population in Galactic globular clusters (GCs), we show that there is not a clear relation between the number of sources per unit of mass and the stellar encounter rate, the cluster mass, or the cluster central density. If any, only in the case of core-collapsed GCs could there be an anticorrelation with the stellar encounter rate. Our findings contrast with previous studies where clear positive correlations were identified. Our results suggest that correlations between faint X-ray sources, from which often conclusions for the CV population are drawn, and the GC parameters considered here, are likely influenced by other type of X-ray sources, including other types of compact binaries, which have X-ray luminosities similar to CVs. The findings presented here also suggest that the role of primordial systems is more important than previously believed and that dynamical formation has less influence in the current detectable CV population. The long-standing paradigm that GCs are efficient factories of CVs formed via dynamical interactions does not seem to be supported by current observations.

Cataclysmic Variables from Sloan Digital Sky Survey – V. The search for period bouncers continues

ABSTRACT SDSS-V is carrying out a dedicated survey for white dwarfs, single, and in binaries, and we report the analysis of the spectroscopy of 118 cataclysmic variables (CVs) and CV candidates obtained during the final plug plate observations of SDSS. We identify eight new CVs, spectroscopically confirm 53 and refute 11 published CV candidates, and we report 21 new or improved orbital periods. The orbital period distribution of the SDSS-V CVs does not clearly exhibit a period gap. In common with previous studies, the distribution shows that spectroscopically identified CVs have a larger proportion of short-period systems compared to samples identified from photometric variability. Remarkably, despite a systematic search, we find very few period bouncers. We estimate the space density of period bouncers to be $\simeq 0.2\times 10^{-6}\, \mathrm{pc}^{-3}$, i.e. they represent only a few per cent of the total CV population. This suggests that during their final phase of evolution, CVs either destroy the donor, e.g. via a merger, or that they become detached and cease mass transfer.

New X-ray detections of magnetic period-bounce cataclysmic variables from XMM-Newton and SRG/eROSITA

Context. A great portion of the cataclysmic variable population, between 40% and 70%, is predicted to be made up of period-bouncers, systems with degenerate donors that have evolved past the period minimum. However, due to their intrinsic faintness, only a few of these systems have been observed and confidently identified so far. Aims. We have searched for X-ray emission as proof of accretion in order to confirm period-bounce cataclysmic variables. Methods. In this study, we used data from XMM-Newton and eROSITA on a pilot sample of three period-bounce candidates with a magnetic white dwarf, which are expected to exhibit stronger X-ray emission than non-magnetic systems due to more efficient conversion of matter accretion onto the white dwarf. Results. In a dedicated XMM-Newton observation of the period-bounce candidate SDSS J151415.65+074446.5 we discovered X-ray modulation at the binary orbital period confirming it as an accreting system. The X-ray light curve and the X-ray spectrum display characteristics of magnetic Polar-type systems, allowing us for the first time to determine the X-ray luminosity and mass accretion rate for this system. Catalog data from eROSITA on the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma satellite for V379 Vir and SDSS J125044.42+154957.4 enabled a first look into the X-ray behavior of period-bounce candidates with this new all-sky instrument. From the eROSITA measurements, the X-ray luminosity and mass accretion rate were determined for the first time for SDSS J125044.42+154957.4, and the earlier result for V379 Vir from XMM-Newton was confirmed. Conclusions. The three cataclysmic variables with a magnetic white dwarf and very low-mass donor studied in this work present evidence for X-ray emission at a similar level of LX [erg s−1] ≈ 1029, which, together with the detection of X-ray orbital modulation in two of them (i.e., V379 Vir and SDSS J151415.65+074446.5), unambiguously proves the presence of accretion in these systems. The detection of these period-bouncers at faint X-ray luminosity levels with the all-sky X-ray survey eROSITA offers new prospects for the identification of additional period-bouncers, providing impetus for theoretical studies of binary evolution.

A catalogue of cataclysmic variables from 20 yr of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with new classifications, periods, trends, and oddities

ABSTRACT We present a catalogue of 507 cataclysmic variables (CVs) observed in SDSS I to IV including 70 new classifications collated from multiple archival data sets. This represents the largest sample of CVs with high-quality and homogeneous optical spectroscopy. We have used this sample to derive unbiased space densities and period distributions for the major sub-types of CVs. We also report on some peculiar CVs, period bouncers and also CVs exhibiting large changes in accretion rates. We report 70 new CVs, 59 new periods, 178 unpublished spectra, and 262 new or updated classifications. From the SDSS spectroscopy, we also identified 18 systems incorrectly identified as CVs in the literature. We discuss the observed properties of 13 peculiar CVS, and we identify a small set of eight CVs that defy the standard classification scheme. We use this sample to investigate the distribution of different CV sub-types, and we estimate their individual space densities, as well as that of the entire CV population. The SDSS I to IV sample includes 14 period bounce CVs or candidates. We discuss the variability of CVs across the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, highlighting selection biases of variability-based CV detection. Finally, we searched for, and found eight tertiary companions to the SDSS CVs. We anticipate that this catalogue and the extensive material included in the Supplementary Data will be useful for a range of observational population studies of CVs.

A dense 0.1-solar-mass star in a 51-minute-orbital-period eclipsing binary.

Of more than a thousand known cataclysmic variables (CVs), where a white dwarf is accreting from a hydrogen-rich star, only a dozen have orbital periods below 75 minutes1-9. One way to achieve these short periods requires the donor star to have undergone substantial nuclear evolution before interacting with the white dwarf10-14, and it is expected that these objects will transition to helium accretion. These transitional CVs have been proposed as progenitors of helium CVs13-18. However, no known transitional CV is expected to reach an orbital period short enough to account for most of the helium CV population, leaving the role of this evolutionary pathway unclear. Here we report observations of ZTF J1813+4251, a 51-minute-orbital-period, fully eclipsing binary system consisting of a star with a temperature comparable to that of the Sun but a density 100 times greater owing to its helium-rich composition, accreting onto a white dwarf. Phase-resolved spectra, multi-band light curves and the broadband spectral energy distribution allow us to obtain precise and robust constraints on the masses, radii and temperatures of both components. Evolutionary modelling shows that ZTF J1813+4251 is destined to become a helium CV binary, reaching an orbital period under 20 minutes, rendering ZTF J1813+4251 a previously missing link between helium CV binaries and hydrogen-rich CVs.

Informing the Cataclysmic Variable Sequence from Gaia Data: The Orbital-period–Color–Absolute-magnitude Relationship

The orbital-period (P orb) gap in the population of cataclysmic variables (CVs) informs the theoretical narrative of CV evolution, yet a complete understanding of the driving angular momentum loss mechanisms above and below this gap remains elusive. Here we identify, for standard CVs, a new, apparently monotonic relationship between quiescent color (G BP–G RP), absolute magnitude (M G ), and P orb (between 70 minutes and 8 hr) revealed in Gaia DR2 and EDR3. We show that P orb increases in the color–absolute-magnitude diagram roughly orthogonally to the white dwarf and main sequences. We find the orbital-period–color–absolute-magnitude relationship to be stable across different CV subtypes: dwarf novae, intermediate polars, polars, and novalike systems. We place our findings in context with the known semiempirical donor sequence for CVs and find a dependence between color and M G for a given P orb specifically for dwarf novae and intermediate polars above the period gap. These relations have the potential to inform a more complete picture of CV evolution.

Investigating the UV-excess in Star Clusters with N-body Simulations: Predictions for Future CSST Observations* *Supported by the research grants from the China Manned Space Project with No. CMS-CSST-2021-A08.

We study the origin of the UV-excess in star clusters by performing N-body simulations of six clusters with N = 10 k and N = 100 k (single stars & binary systems) and metallicities of Z = 0.01, 0.001 and 0.0001, using petar. All models initially have a 50% primordial binary fraction. Using GalevNB we convert the simulated data into synthetic spectra and photometry for the China Space Station Telescope (CSST) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST). From the spectral energy distributions we identify three stellar populations that contribute to the UV-excess: (1) second asymptotic giant branch stars, which contribute to the UV flux at early times; (2) naked helium stars and (3) white dwarfs, which are long-term contributors to the FUV spectra. Binary stars consisting of a white dwarf and a main sequence star are cataclysmic variable (CV) candidates. The magnitude distribution of CV candidates is bimodal up to 2 Gyr. The bright CV population is particularly bright in FUV − NUV. The FUV − NUV color of our model clusters is 1–2 mag redder than the UV-excess globular clusters in M87 and in the Milky Way. This discrepancy may be induced by helium enrichment in observed clusters. Our simulations are based on simple stellar evolution; we do not include the effects of variations in helium and light elements or multiple stellar populations. A positive radial color gradient is present in CSST NUV − y for main sequence stars in all models with a color difference of 0.2–0.5 mag, up to 4 half-mass radii. The CSST NUV − g color correlates strongly with HST FUV − NUV for NUV − g > 1 mag, with the linear relation FUV − NUV =(1.09 ± 0.12) × (NUV − g) + (−1.01 ± 0.22). This allows for conversion of future CSST NUV − g colors into HST FUV − NUV colors, which are sensitive to UV-excess features. We find that CSST will be able to detect UV-excess in Galactic/extragalactic star clusters with ages >200 Myr.

The nature of the X-ray sources constituting the 6.7 keV Galactic ridge emission

We reanalyze the deep Chandra X-ray observations near the Galactic center and show that reliable identifications of X-ray sources can be obtained with the Gaia EDR3 data to investigate which types of stellar sources are responsible for the X-ray emission observed from the Galactic ridge (GRXE). In the central 3 arcmin region 318 X-ray sources are detected, about one-third of which can be identified with objects listed in Gaia EDR3; however, only 22 objects have parallaxes and colors and can be placed into a color-magnitude diagram and thus be identified as coronal X-ray emitters. A rather large fraction of the X-ray sources cannot be identified with Gaia EDR3 entries, and we discuss the optical brightnesses of these sources. We analyze the counting events obtained in the 6.7 keV iron line spectral region and show that they are mainly caused by background events; however, 237 events can be associated with the detected X-ray sources, and we carry out an intensity measurement of the whole iron line complex. Our analysis shows that the mean energy of this iron line complex is located at a wavelength of ≈1.87 Å, where a variety of emission lines of iron ions in ionization stages FeXXIII–FeXXV are located; another line at 7.0 keV is only marginally detected, while the fluorescent 6.4 keV neutral iron line is clearly not seen. We demonstrate that only a few of the detected X-ray sources are responsible for the bulk of the observed iron line emission. We discuss to what extent coronal emission can be held responsible and demonstrate that M dwarfs and active binary systems like RS CVn systems do not significantly contribute to the observed emission; instead, it appears that the Galactic ridge emission is produced by optically fainter sources. Among the known population of cataclysmic variables, polars and dwarf novae appear to be the most promising candidates as main contributors to the GRXE.

Birth of the ELMs: a ZTF survey for evolved cataclysmic variables turning into extremely low-mass white dwarfs

ABSTRACT We present a systematic survey for mass-transferring and recently detached cataclysmic variables (CVs) with evolved secondaries, which are progenitors of extremely low mass white dwarfs (ELM WDs), AM CVn systems, and detached ultracompact binaries. We select targets below the main sequence in the Gaia colour–magnitude diagram with ZTF light curves showing large-amplitude ellipsoidal variability and orbital period Porb < 6 h. This yields 51 candidates brighter than G = 18, of which we have obtained many-epoch spectra for 21. We confirm all 21 to be completely or nearly Roche lobe filling close binaries. Thirteen show evidence of ongoing mass transfer, which has likely just ceased in the other eight. Most of the secondaries are hotter than any previously known CV donors, with temperatures 4700 < Teff/K < 8000. Remarkably, all secondaries with $T_{\rm eff} \gtrsim 7000\, \rm K$ appear to be detached, while all cooler secondaries are still mass-transferring. This transition likely marks the temperature where magnetic braking becomes inefficient due to loss of the donor’s convective envelope. Most of the proto-WD secondaries have masses near $0.15\, \rm M_{\odot }$; their companions have masses near $0.8\, \rm M_{\odot }$. We infer a space density of $\sim 60\, \rm kpc^{-3}$, roughly 80 times lower than that of normal CVs and three times lower than that of ELM WDs. The implied Galactic birth rate, $\mathcal {R}\sim 60\, \rm Myr^{-1}$, is half that of AM CVn binaries. Most systems are well-described by mesa models for CVs in which mass transfer begins only as the donor leaves the main sequence. All are predicted to reach minimum periods 5 ≲ Porb min−1 ≲ 30 within a Hubble time, where they will become AM CVn binaries or merge. This sample triples the known evolved CV population and offers broad opportunities for improving understanding of the compact binary population.

The Compact binary HIgh CAdence Survey (CHiCaS): An overview

Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) are binaries in which a white dwarf accretes from a low-mass companion star. CVs are the best-suited laboratories to test our understanding of the evolution of compact, interacting binaries as they are numerous, relatively bright, and both stellar components are structurally simple. Nonetheless, while a large fraction (≃40-80%) of the present-day Galactic CV population is expected to be old, highly evolved and to host brown dwarf companions, yet very few of these so-called “period bouncers” have been identified so far. The lack of these systems in the observed Galactic CV population possibly suggests that the physical mechanisms driving CV evolution (such as the common envelope phase, the mechanisms of angular momentum loss and/or the response of the companions to the mass loss) are still not completely understood.The Compact binary HIgh CAdence Survey (CHiCaS) is a high cadence photometric survey performing three hours of uninterrupted time series photometry at one minute cadence over 136 square degrees of sky with JAST/T80Cam. CHiCaS aims to unambiguously identify the predicted large population of period-bounce CVs via detection of binary eclipses, thus providing an observational support for the current evolutionary models of all kind of compact binaries, such as black hole binaries, X-ray transients, double degenerates or SN Ia progenitors. Moreover, CHiCaS will deliver high cadence light curves along with full-colour information for about 2.5 million sources, thus identifying several hundred thousand variable stars, including eclipsing and contact binaries, pulsating and flaring stars, which will provide a significant legacy value.

A Volume-limited Sample of Cataclysmic Variables from Gaia DR2: Space Density and Population Properties

ABSTRACT We present the first volume-limited sample of cataclysmic variables (CVs), selected using the accurate parallaxes provided by the second data release (DR2) of the European Space Agency Gaia space mission. The sample is composed of 42 CVs within 150 pc, including two new systems discovered using the Gaia data, and is $(77 \pm 10)$ per cent complete. We use this sample to study the intrinsic properties of the Galactic CV population. In particular, the CV space density we derive, $\rho =(4.8^{+0.6}_{-0.8}) \times 10^{-6}\, \mbox{$\mathrm{pc}^{-3}$}$, is lower than that predicted by most binary population synthesis studies. We also find a low fraction of period bounce CVs, seven per cent, and an average white dwarf mass of $\langle M_\mathrm{WD} \rangle = (0.83 \pm 0.17)\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$. Both findings confirm previous results, ruling out the presence of observational biases affecting these measurements, as has been suggested in the past. The observed fraction of period bounce CVs falls well below theoretical predictions, by at least a factor of five, and remains one of the open problems in the current understanding of CV evolution. Conversely, the average white dwarf mass supports the presence of additional mechanisms of angular momentum loss that have been accounted for in the latest evolutionary models. The fraction of magnetic CVs in the 150 pc sample is remarkably high at 36 per cent. This is in striking contrast with the absence of magnetic white dwarfs in the detached population of CV progenitors, and underlines that the evolution of magnetic systems has to be included in the next generation of population models.

The Galactic Bulge Diffuse Emission in Broadband X-Rays with NuSTAR

Abstract The diffuse hard X-ray emission that fills the Galactic center, bulge, and ridge is believed to arise from unresolved populations of X-ray binary systems. However, the identity of the dominant class of accreting objects in each region remains unclear. Recent studies of Fe line properties and the low-energy (<10 keV) X-ray continuum of the bulge indicate a major population fraction of nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs), in particular quiescent dwarf novae (DNe). This is in contrast to previous high-energy (>10 keV) X-ray measurements of the bulge and ridge, which indicate a dominant population of magnetic CVs, in particular intermediate polars. In addition, NuSTAR broadband measurements have uncovered a much heavier intermediate polar population in the central ∼100 pc than previously assumed, raising the possibility that some fraction of this population extends further from the center. Here we use NuSTAR’s large aperture for unfocused photons and its broadband X-ray range to probe the diffuse continuum of the inner ∼1°–3° of the Galactic bulge. This allows us to constrain possible multitemperature components of the spectrum, such as could indicate a mixture of soft and hard populations. Our emissivity is consistent with previous hard X-ray measurements in the bulge and ridge, with the diffuse X-ray luminosity tracing the stellar mass. The spectrum is well described by a single-temperature thermal plasma with kT ≈ 8 keV, with no significant emission above 20 keV. This supports that the bulge is dominated by quiescent DNe; we find no evidence of a significant intermediate polar population in the hard X-ray band.

Massive White Dwarfs in the Galactic Center: A Chandra X-Ray Spectroscopy of Cataclysmic Variables

Abstract Previous X-ray observations toward the nuclear star cluster (NSC) at the Galactic center have discovered thousands of point sources, most of which were believed to be cataclysmic variables (CVs), i.e., a white dwarf (WD) accreting from a low-mass companion. However, the population properties of these CVs remain unclear, which otherwise would provide important information about the evolutionary history of the NSC. In this work we utilize ultra-deep archival Chandra observations to study the spectral properties of the NSC CVs, in close comparison with those in the solar vicinity. We find that the NSC CVs have strong Fe xxv and Fe xxvi lines (both of which show equivalent widths ∼200–300 eV), indicating metal-rich companions. Moreover, their Fe xxvi to Fe xxv line flux ratio is used to diagnose the characteristic WD mass (M WD) of NSC CVs. The results show that the CVs with erg s−1 have a mean M WD of ∼0.6/1.0 M ⊙ if they are magnetic/nonmagnetic CVs; while those with between 1 and 6 × 1031 erg s−1 have a mean M WD of ∼0.8/1.2 M ⊙ if they are magnetic/nonmagnetic CVs. All these Chandra detected CVs collectively contribute ∼30%–50% of the unresolved 20–40 keV X-ray emission from the NSC. The CV population with massive (i.e., M WD ∼ 1.2 M ⊙) WDs have not been observed in the solar vicinity or the Galactic bulge, and they might have been formed via dynamical encounters in the NSC.

Are most Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters dynamically formed?

AbstractWe have been investigating populations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in a set of more than 300 globular cluster (GC) models evolved with themoccacode.[-120pt] One of the main questions we have intended to answer is whether most CVs in GCs are dynamically formed or not. Contrary to what has been argued for a long time, we found that dynamical destruction of primordial CV progenitors is much stronger in GCs than dynamical formation of CVs. In particular, we found that, on average, the detectable CV population is predominantly composed of CVs formed via a typical common envelope phase (≳70 per cent). However, core-collapsed models tend to have higher fractions of bright CVs than non-core-collapsed ones, which suggests then that the formation of CVs is indeed slightly favoured through strong dynamical interactions in core-collapsed GCs, due to the high stellar densities in their cores.

Populations of Sources in a Galactic Plane Survey with the ART-XC Telescope of the Spectrum-RG Observatory: Simulations

The possibility of conducting a Galactic plane survey at energies above 5 keV with the ART-XC telescope onboard the Spectrum-Rontgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory during the satellite’s flight to the Lagrange point L2 is considered. One of the possible fields for such a survey is proposed. We show that it will be possible to detect ∼100 cataclysmic variables with luminosities 1031−1034 erg s−1 in a survey with an area of 10 deg2 and a duration of 10 days. Such a representative sample may allow the luminosity function and other properties of the population of cataclysmic variables in the Galaxy to be refined.

MOCCA-SURVEY database I. Accreting white dwarf binary systems in globular clusters – IV. Cataclysmic variables – properties of bright and faint populations

We investigate here populations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in a set of 288 globular cluster (GC) models evolved with the MOCCA code. This is by far the largest sample of GC models ever analysed with respect to CVs. Contrary to what has been argued for a long time, we found that dynamical destruction of primordial CV progenitors is much stronger in GCs than dynamical formation of CVs, and that dynamically formed CVs and CVs formed under no/weak influence of dynamics have similar white dwarf mass distributions. In addition, we found that, on average, the detectable CV population is predominantly composed of CVs formed via typical common envelope phase (CEP) ($\gtrsim70$ per cent), that only $\approx2-4$ per cent of all CVs in a GC is likely to be detectable, and that core-collapsed models tend to have higher fractions of bright CVs than non-core-collapsed ones. We also consistently show, for the first time, that the properties of bright and faint CVs can be understood by means of the pre-CV and CV formation rates, their properties at their formation times and cluster half-mass relaxation times. Finally, we show that models following the initial binary population proposed by Kroupa and set with low CEP efficiency better reproduce the observed amount of CVs and CV candidates in NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc. To progress with comparisons, the essential next step is to properly characterize the candidates as CVs (e.g. by obtaining orbital periods and mass ratios).

The cataclysmic variable QZ Lib: a period bouncer

While highly evolved cataclysmic variables (CVs) with brown dwarf donors, often called "period bouncers", are predicted to make up $\simeq40-70$ % of the Galactic CV population, only a handful of such systems are currently known. The identification and characterization of additional period bouncers is therefore important to probe this poorly understood phase of CV evolution. We investigate the evolution of the CV QZ Lib following its 2004 super-outburst using multi-epoch spectroscopy. From time-resolved spectroscopic observations we measure the orbital period of the system, $P_\mathrm{orb}= 0.06436(20)$ d, which, combined with the superhump period $P_\mathrm{SH}= 0.064602(24)$ d, yields the system mass ratio, $q = 0.040(9)$. From the analysis of the spectral energy distribution we determine the structure of the accretion disc and the white dwarf effective temperature, $T_\mathrm{eff} = 10\,500 \pm 1500\,\mathrm{K}$. We also derive an upper limit on the effective temperature of the secondary, $T_\mathrm{eff} \lesssim 1700\,\mathrm{K}$, corresponding to a brown dwarf of T spectral type. The low temperature of the white dwarf, the small mass ratio and the fact that the donor is not dominating the near-infrared emission are all clues of a post bounce system. Although it is possible that QZ Lib could have formed as a white dwarf plus a brown dwarf binary, binary population synthesis studies clearly suggest this scenario to be less likely than a period bouncer detection and we conclude that QZ Lib is a CV that has already evolved through the period minimum.

Gamma-ray and X-ray emission from the Galactic centre: hints on the nuclear star cluster formation history

The Milky Way centre exhibits an intense flux in the gamma and X-ray bands, whose origin is partly ascribed to the possible presence of a large population of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs), respectively. However, the number of sources required to generate such an excess is much larger than what is expected from in situ star formation and evolution, opening a series of questions about the formation history of the Galactic nucleus. In this paper we make use of direct $N$-body simulations to investigate whether these sources could have been brought to the Galactic centre by a population of star clusters that underwent orbital decay and formed the Galactic nuclear star cluster (NSC). Our results suggest that the gamma ray emission is compatible with a population of MSPs that were mass segregated in their parent clusters, while the X-ray emission is consistent with a population of CVs born via dynamical interactions in dense star clusters. Combining observations with our modelling, we explore how the observed $\gamma$ ray flux can be related to different NSC formation scenarios. Finally, we show that the high-energy emission coming from the galactic central regions can be used to detect black holes heavier than $10^5\Ms$ in nearby dwarf galaxies.
