This article proposes an approach to the study of interpersonal communication —the critique of popular sources (CPS) of interpersonal advice. The fundamental assumption prompting the development of this strategy is: the proliferation of research as well as popular sources related to interpersonal communication preclude introducing students to a significant portion of the material in this area. As instructors we need to develop students’ (1) ability to be selective in choosing interpersonal materials, and (2) disposition to analyze, critique, and evaluate before applying the interpersonal advice to their lives.
