Modified polymethyl methacrylate as a sustainable medium for capturing carbon dioxide

This study evaluates the potential of modified polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) materials, which incorporate organotin moieties pendant on the polymeric chains, as media for carbon dioxide storage. The PMMA containing a triphenyltin moiety has the largest specific surface area (SBET=11.618 m2/g) in comparison to the polymers containing tributyl (5.287 m2/g) and trimethyl (4.881 m2/g) residues. The PMMA with the triphenyltin moiety proved to be the most efficient material in capturing carbon dioxide (34.8 cm3/cm, 6.8 wt%), which is attributed to its relatively high surface area and pore volume and diameter compared to the others.

3-D X-ray computed tomography in the analyses of intraocular lenses explanted because of postoperative opacification.

X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) describes the acquisition and reconstruction of 2-D X-ray transmission images to create a 3-D representation of the specimen. The aim of this study was to use this technology in the analyses of intraocular lenses (IOLs) explanted because of optical opacification occurring postoperatively. John A. A hydrophilic acrylic and a silicone lens (the later from an eye with asteroid hyalosis) explanted because of postoperative calcification, as well as a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) lens explanted because of snowflake degeneration underwent analysis under gross and light microscopy. Then, they were attached to an appropriate support and scanned under a Zeiss Xradia Versa X-ray microscope. After data acquisition, data segmentation was performed with a commercially available program to separate image data into components. Morphology, size/volume, and specific location of calcified deposits on the surface or within the substance of explanted IOLs could be demonstrated by X-ray CT within the entire volume of each lens with high contrast and resolution. The PMMA lens showed multiple spaces/fissures in relation to Nd:YAG pitting of the optic, and what appeared to be sheets of delaminated PMMA material at different levels within the optic substance. The key benefit of X-ray CT is that it can be done without physically sectioning the specimen. This preliminary study demonstrates that this technology can be potentially useful in the imaging and analyses of explanted, opacified lenses.

Intraoperative Intraocular Lens Waste: Incidence, Cost and Reasons.

To evaluate the incidence and cost of intraocular lens(IOL) waste during IOL implantation, as well as the reasons for it. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the data of 485 patients from the IOL waste registers of a single tertiary eye hospital in China during 2016-2020. The primary outcomes were the incidence, cost, and reasons for different IOL properties. Cases were examined to ascertain IOL material, design, procedural details, and causes of waste. IOL waste occurred in 485 (6.62‰) of the 73,246 IOL implantations during the study period. The total cost of IOL waste was 429, 850.26 Chinese Yuan (CNY) related to waste with an average cost of 2, 442.33 CNY per procedure during the study period. Comparisons between IOL properties showed that polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) material (39, 2.05%), three-piece design (142, 1.49%), and secondary IOL implantation (26, 2.16%) were associated with IOL wastage, and the difference was statistically significant. The causes of IOL waste were damage (107, 60.80%), patient reasons (37, 21.26%), aseptic errors (22, 12.50%), IOL quality problems (8, 4.55%), and loss (2, 1.14%). The incidence of IOL waste is low, but still leads to a significant cost burden due to a large number of cataract surgeries. PMMA material, three-piece design, and secondary implantation were identified as factors increasing IOL waste. Damage emerged as the primary reason for waste, largely attributed to human error. Therefore, the development of strategies to mitigate IOL waste is imperative.

A novel method for air assisted nanosecond pulsed fiber laser beam transmission micro-channelling on thick PMMA material

The demand for scaling up polymeric materials for mass production or scaling down for microscale applications is at its peak in the modern era. Laser beam technology enables the formation of micro-channels on polymers, specifically polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). This study examines the viability and cost-effectiveness of employing the diode pump fiber laser transmission technique to create micro-channels on thick, transparent PMMA under air-assisted circumstances for biomedical engineering and micro-fluidics applications. The analysis has included process variables such as pulse frequency, power, and cutting speed, as well as machining parameters including depth of cut, kerf width, and heat-affected zone (HAZ) width. The results of multi-objective optimization indicate that the following parameters—a pulse frequency of 51.30 kHz, a working power of 13 % of 50 W, and a cutting speed of 0.60 mm/s—contribute to the desired microfluidics response values: 12.54 µm depth of cut, 24.05 µm kerf width, and 5.98 µm HAZ width.

Lifetime assessment of deep-sea manned cabin with PMMA pressure-resistant hull prior to micro-cracks

Fully-transparent cabin type, utilized in manned submersibles, is typically constructed using viscoelastic PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) material. Accurate fatigue life assessment of manned cabin is of paramount importance to ensure structural safety. In this study, a calculation process for evaluating the fatigue life of PMMA manned cabins based on a continuum damage mechanics model combined with the viscoelastic constitutive relationship of the PMMA material in response to the absence of related specification is proposed. Fatigue tests of PMMA material are performed for determination of damage evolution model parameters and the calculation process is validated by the fatigue test data. Tailored subroutines are then developed by using ABAQUS software tool, respectively for structural analysis of a typical manned cabin with PMMA pressure-resistant hull, openings, hatches and penetration plates and simulating trapezoidal loading history acting on manned cabin. Subroutine coupling is accordingly employed to conduct parametric analysis on fatigue crack initiation life of the fully-transparent manned cabin with consideration of different outside pressure level and operation time and valuable results are obtained for identifying key areas of concern. This study intends to contribute to further cabins safety enhancement, as well as to design optimization and fatigue analysis of underwater structures involving PMMA materials.

Structural Characterization and Bioactivity of a Titanium(IV)-Oxo Complex Stabilized by Mandelate Ligands.

Research on titanium-oxo complexes (TOCs) is usually focused on their structure and photocatalytic properties. Findings from these investigations further sparked our interest in exploring their potential biological activities. In this study, we focused on the synthesis and structure of a compound with the general formula [Ti8O2(OiPr)20(man)4] (1), which was isolated from the reaction mixture of titanium(IV) isopropoxide with mandelic acid (Hman) in a molar ratio of 4:1. The structure (1) was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, while spectroscopic studies provided insights into its physicochemical properties. To assess the potential practical applications of (1), its microcrystals were incorporated into a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix, yielding composite materials of the type PMMA + (1) (2 wt.%, 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, and 20 wt.%). The next stage of our research involved the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the obtained materials. The investigations performed demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of pure (1) and its composites (PMMA + (1)) against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Furthermore, MTT tests conducted on the L929 murine fibroblast cell line confirmed the lack of cytotoxicity of these composites. Our study identified (1) as a promising antimicrobial agent, which is also may be use for producing composite coatings.

Comparing tissue-equivalent properties of polyester and epoxy resins with PMMA material using Gate/Geant4 simulation toolkit

This study investigates the applicability of cost-effective and commercially available polyester and epoxy resins as alternative materials for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) in computed tomography (CT) dosimetry phantoms. The mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) of the resin samples were determined using the GEANT4/GATE simulation framework and compared with those of PMMA material over a spectrum of diagnostic photon energies from 10 to 150 keV. A CT scanner was used to acquire the mean attenuation values (CT number) of the fabricated samples at 80,100,120 and 140 kVp CT tube energy. The study found that the resins have similar physical properties and dosimetry behavior to PMMA at all energies. Polyester has a negligible 1% deviational variance in mass attenuation from PMMA. Epoxy demonstrates substantially elevated mass attenuation coefficients compared to PMMA at inferior photon energies between 10 and 40 Kvp. However, with ascending photon energy, the mass attenuation coefficients of epoxy resin and PMMA become more homologous, ultimately converging indistinguishably at 100 Kvp. The CT number results showed that polyester has a 3% difference from PMMA. Moreover, the epoxy resin's CT numbers were within 18HU of PMMA material. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of using low-cost, readily available resin composites such as polyester and epoxy resins as a substitute material for CT dosimetry phantom in computed tomography.

Fatigue crack growth properties of PMMA material used in underwater transparent structures

ABSTRACT Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is an ideal material used in underwater transparent structures such as submersible windows and the fully-transparent pressure chamber of the sightseeing submersibles. The failure of PMMA structures usually come from small crack-like defects. In this paper, the fatigue crack growth experiments were carried out on PMMA materials with different thicknesses (B = 3, 6, 12 mm) and stress ratios (R = 0.1, 0.3) as well as plane strain fracture toughness test for unstable crack propagation conditions. Thickness effect and dwell time effect are experimentally investigated in addition to load ratio effect. The applicability of an improved crack growth rate model on PMMA material is validated by test results. The application of this model for prediction of crack growth rates can greatly save experimental time under different working conditions and can be applied in fatigue assessment of full-transparent structures under random loading.

Fabrication, structural, and enhanced mechanical behavior of MgO substituted PMMA composites for dental applications

The most common denture material used for dentistry is poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA). Usually, the polymeric PMMA material has numerous biological, mechanical and cost-effective shortcomings. Hence, to resolve such types of drawbacks, attempts have been made to investigate fillers of the PMMA like alumina (Al2O3), silica (SiO2), zirconia (ZrO2) etc. For the enhancement of the PMMA properties a suitable additive is required for its orthopedic applications. Herein, the main motive of this study was to synthesize a magnesium oxide (MgO) reinforced polymer-based hybrid nano-composites by using heat cure method with superior optical, biological and mechanical characteristics. For the structural and vibrational studies of the composites, XRD and FT-IR were carried out. Herein, the percentage of crystallinity for all the fabricated composites were also calculated and found to be 14.79–30.31. Various physical and optical parameters such as density, band gap, Urbach energy, cutoff energy, cutoff wavelength, steepness parameter, electron–phonon interaction, refractive index, and optical dielectric constant were also studied and their values are found to be in the range of 1.21–1.394 g/cm3, 5.44–5.48 eV, 0.167–0.027 eV, 5.68 eV, 218 nm, 0.156–0.962, 4.273–0.693, 1.937–1.932, and 3.752–3.731 respectively. To evaluate the mechanical properties like compressive strength, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of the composites a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) was used and their values were 60.3 and 101 MPa, 78 and 40.3 MPa, 5.85 and 9.8 MPa-m1/2 respectively. Tribological tests of the composites were also carried out. In order to check the toxicity, MTT assay was also carried out for the PM0 and PM15 [(x)MgO + (100 − x) (C5O2H8)n] (x = 0 and 15) composites. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the structural, physical, optical, and biological features of the fabricated PMMA-MgO composites, highlighting the potential of the PM15 composite with its enhanced density, mechanical strength, and excellent biocompatibility for denture applications.

Enhanced antimicrobial efficacy of chlorhexidine-encapsulated halloysite nanotubes incorporated in presurgical orthopedic appliances: an in vitro, controlled study.

Presurgical infant's orthopedic appliances (PSIOs) play an increasingly crucial role in the interdisciplinary management of neonatal CLP, aiming to improve and maintain adequate nasolabial aesthetics, followed by primary lip/nasal surgery in both unilateral and bilateral CLP cases. The use of PSIOs in cleft lip and palate patients can lead to contamination with oral microflora, acting as a potential reservoir for infectious microorganisms. Acrylic surfaces might provide retention niches for microorganisms to adhere, and inhabit, which is difficult to control in immunocompromised patients, thus predisposing them to increased infection risks. The objective of this multi-assay in vitro study was to investigate the effects of incorporating chlorhexidine-loaded halloysite nanotubes (CHX-HNTs) fillers on the morphological, cytotoxic, release, and antimicrobial characteristics of self-cured acrylic polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) material used in pre-surgical orthopedic appliances. Disk-shaped PMMA specimens were prepared with varying proportions of CHX-HNTs. A control group without any addition served as a reference, and four experimental samples contained a range of different concentrations of CHX-HNTs (1.0, 1.5, 3, and 4.5 wt%). The antimicrobial efficacy was assessed using an agar diffusion test against common reference microorganisms: Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus agalactiae. Cytotoxicity was examined using the L929 cell line (mouse fibroblasts) through a (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide, MTT) cell viability assay. The release kinetics of CHX were monitored using UV-spectral measurements. The statistical analysis used a one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test. The integration of CHX-HNTs in PMMA exhibited a substantial dose-dependent antifungal and antibacterial effect against microorganisms at tested mass fractions (1.0 to 4.5 wt%). CHX release was sustained for up to 60 days, supporting prolonged antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, no significant cytotoxicity was determined in the L929 fibroblast cell line (control), indicating the biocompatibility of the CHX-HNTs-enhanced PMMA. Incorporating CHX-HNTs in PMMA successfully enhanced its antimicrobial properties, providing sustained CHX release and superior antimicrobial efficacy. These findings demonstrate the potential of antimicrobial nanoparticles in dental therapies to improve therapeutic outcomes. However, rigorous further clinical trials and observational studies are warranted to validate the practical application, safety, and efficacy. This study has the potential to make a major impact on the health of infants born with cleft lip and palate by helping to reduce the prevalence of infectious illnesses. The incorporation of CHX-HNTs into PMMA-based appliances is a novel promising preventive approach to reduce microbial infections.

Influence of the elasticity variation of the 3D printed PMMA structure on the axial tooth vibration

Recently, 3D printing with poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) has been widely used in dentistry: 3D printing is a suitable method for producing any complex three-dimensional shape, and PMMA is a material that has suitable properties in the oral cavity environment. That is why 3D printing is very often used to make PMMA teeth. There is the impact between teeth during chewing that causes shape variation and tooth vibration. As cyclic vibrations adversely affect the durability of PMMA teeth, they must be eliminated. The object of this work is to study the axial vibrations of a 3D printed tooth, as well as to give recommendations for modifying the PMMA structure with the aim of vibration damping. Tooth vibration is mathematically modeled and analytically solved. The obtained result provides a link between the vibrational properties and the elasticity variation of the PMMA material. The function that defines the change in elasticity of PMMA depends on the ?slow time?. (The term ?slow time? implies a product of time and a parameter that is less than one). For a decreasing elasticity function, the vibration is of damped type: for higher is the elasticity reduction, the faster is the vibration decay. Based on the determined elasticity function, the modification of the PMMA structure can be realized. Authors propose the application of the obtained elasticity variation function for programming 4D printing with modified PMMA.

Parameter inversion method for target plate constitutive model based on BP neural network

In this paper, a neural network-based inversion method that can be used to streamline the acquisition of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) material constitutive model parameters for explosive cutting simulations is presented. This approach mitigates the need for multiple tests, a requirement of traditional methods. Initially, three categories of the damage, penetration depth, impact fracture thickness and spallation damage thickness, were distinguished and quantified by cutting the14 mm PMMA target plate with a 2.5 mm wide linear shaped charge, and the adjustment interval for the constitutive model parameters could be determined by combining the explosive cutting experiment data and the empirical parameters of the Johnson Holmquist Ceramics (JH-2) constitutive model. Subsequently, the numerical simulations of the cutting process of the performed target plate tests were carried out using LS-DYNA, and a dataset of target plate damage incorporating the three types of damage data was amassed. Ultimately, a neural network model correlating the parameters of the PMMA target plate constitutive model with the damage data was developed and trained using the plate damage dataset, and several supplementary experiments as well as finite element numerical simulations involving a 4.2 mm wide linear shaped charge cutting a 19 mm PMMA target plate were conducted. The numerical results displayed minimal variance from the experimental results in terms of fracture characteristics and damage data, suggesting that the inverted JH-2 constitutive model parameters can be effectively applied to PMMA target plate explosive cutting simulations. The parameter inversion method allows for the acquisition of more accurate material constitutive model parameters with fewer experiments and will be beneficial for further theoretical studies and practical applications of target plates in the future.

Two-dimensional α -In2Se3 memory devices from resistive switching to synaptic plasticity

We employ two-dimensional (2D) α-In2Se3 nanosheets and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) materials to develop three types of devices with different resistive switching (RS) layer structures and deeply study the electrical properties and physical mechanisms of these devices. It is confirmed that the pure 2D α-In2Se3 nanosheet-based RS device is a mode of ferroelectric regulation of the potential barrier, exhibiting memristor characteristics that can mimic the synaptic plasticity. Meanwhile, PMMA can improve the RS properties of the α-In2Se3 nanosheet-based device, including the appropriate switching ratio, narrow ratio distribution, and good endurance and retention capability, but the device's physical mechanism changes to charge trapping assisted hopping mechanism from the ferroelectric regulation of the potential barrier.

Impact of surface treatments on the sorption and solubility of a heat-cured denture base material

Removable dentures fabricated from polymethylmethacrylate material are the most common prostheses used to treat edentulism worldwide. This research aimed to compare the sorption and solubility characteristics of a mechanically polished heat-cured acrylic denture material and a light-cured varnished material against non-treated material, all of which were soaked in distilled water. A total of 45 specimens were prepared and tested according to the ISO Standard 20795-1: 2013 (E) to test for sorption and solubility. The data were analysed through one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey-Kramer multiple comparison test.

The effects of nano-silver loaded zirconium phosphate on antibacterial properties, mechanical properties and biosafety of room temperature curing PMMA materials.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) frequently features in dental restorative materials due to its favorable properties. However, its surface exhibits a propensity for bacterial colonization, and the material can fracture under masticatory pressure. This study incorporated commercially available RHA-1F-II nano-silver loaded zirconium phosphate (Ag-ZrP) into room-temperature cured PMMA at varying mass fractions. Various methods were employed to characterize Ag-ZrP. Subsequently, an examination of the effects of Ag-ZrP on the antimicrobial properties, biosafety, and mechanical properties of PMMA materials was conducted. The results indicated that the antibacterial rate against Streptococcus mutans was enhanced at Ag-ZrP additions of 0%wt, 0.5%wt, 1.0%wt, 1.5%wt, 2.0%wt, 2.5%wt, and 3.0%wt, achieving respective rates of 53.53%, 67.08%, 83.23%, 93.38%, 95.85%, and 98.00%. Similarly, the antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli registered at 31.62%, 50.14%, 64.00%, 75.09%, 86.30%, 92.98%. When Ag-ZrP was introduced at amounts ranging from 1.0% to 1.5%, PMMA materials exhibited peak mechanical properties. However, mechanical strength diminished beyond additions of 2.5%wt to 3.0%wt, relative to the 0%wt group, while PMMA demonstrated no notable cytotoxicity below a 3.0%wt dosage. Thus, it is inferred that optimal antimicrobial and mechanical properties of PMMA materials are achieved with nano-Ag-ZrP (RHA-1F-II) additions of 1.5%wt to 2.0%wt, without eliciting cytotoxicity.

Comparative Evaluation of Antifungal Property of Acrylic Resin Reinforced with Magnesium Oxide and Silver Nanoparticles and their Effect on Cytotoxic Levels: An In vitro Study

Abstract Background: About 65% of people who wear dentures suffer from denture stomatitis, a prevalent pathologic illness that is commonly linked to Candida albicans. The necessity for the creation of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) materials with intrinsic activity is brought on by increasing resistance of microbes. The study’s objectives were to examine and compare the antifungal properties of acrylic resin by adding silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs), as well as to determine its cellular toxicity at various nanoparticle concentrations on mouse fibroblasts. Materials and Methods: A total of 84 samples were created, including 12 control samples, 36 samples of PMMA resin reinforced with AgNPs, and 36 samples of PMMA resin reinforced with MgONPs. Disk diffusion technique was used to assess the antifungal effectiveness of the samples. By using the MTT test, the cytotoxicity of various nanoparticle concentrations was evaluated. Analysis of variance test and unpaired t-test were used to analyze the data, and then Tukey’s post hoc test was performed. Results: The mean values for AgNPs and MgONPs at 2%, 4%, and 6% after 24 h were 13.71 ± 2.07, 18.58 ± 1.62, and 27.96 ± 1.76 and 11.63 ± 1.35, 14.38 ± 1.63, and 18.25 ± 1.39, respectively. In contrast to the MgONPs group, samples with AgNPs showed greater antifungal efficacy against C. albicans. On mouse fibroblasts, MgONP concentrations showed more cytotoxicity, but AgNP concentrations showed less cytotoxicity. Conclusion: By adding AgNPs and MgONPs to acrylic resins, which are highly efficient against C. albicans, denture stomatitis can be treated.

The Ultimate Strength of Fully Transparent Pressure-Resistant Spherical Cabins

The fully transparent cabin used in a manned submersible is typically made of the viscoelastic material polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The pressure-bearing capacity of a PMMA-manned cabin was investigated considering the effects of initial geometrical imperfections and large openings. Three types of cabins were studied within the failure mode of nonlinear buckling, including an intact spherical cabin, a spherical cabin with a single opening, and a spherical cabin with double openings. The initial geometrical imperfection ranges from 0.1% to 0.5% of the inner diameter. The ultimate strength decreasing tendency for the different types of cabins with increasing initial imperfection was obtained and the thickness of the hatch cover determined based on the principle of equivalence differed its effects on the strength of the cabin. The influence of the hatch cover stiffness was not linear and indicated the necessity of exploring the coordinated design between the PMMA shell and the metal hatch cover for the transparent cabin.

Comparative Analysis of the Fracture Resistance of a Polymeric Material for 3D Printing and a Milled Polymethylmethacrylate Material as Interim Material for Fixed Partial Dentures: New Material Updated

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the fracture resistance of a temporary three-unit fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) made of a new polymeric material obtained by an additive technique (3DPP) using a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system, comparing the prosthesis to the respective outcomes of temporary polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) FDPs obtained by a subtractive technique (milling). Methods: Three-unit FDPs were 3D printed using a polymeric material (n = 20) or milled using polymethylmethacrylate (n = 20). After thermocycling at 5000 cycles at extreme temperatures of 5 °C and 55 °C in distilled water, each specimen was subjected to a compression test on a universal testing machine at a rate of 0.5 mm/min until failure occurred, recording the value in newtons (N). Results: There were statistically significant differences (p-value < 0.005) between the PMMA material (2104.7 N; SD = 178.97 N) and 3DPP (1000.8 N; SD = 196.4 N). Conclusions: The fracture resistance of the PDFs manufactured from milled PMMA showed higher values for fracture resistance. However, the resistance of the 3DPP showed acceptable values under mechanical load; this notable advance in the resistance of printed materials consolidates them as an important alternative to use in interim indirect restorations.

Accuracy and Retention of Molding Plates Used for Infants with Cleft Lip and Palate Fabricated from Different Materials: A Cross-Sectional Clinical Study.

The study aimed to comparatively assess the accuracy and retention of molding plates made of polyethylene terephthalate modified with glycol (PET-G) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) materials, while also investigating the effect of adhesive addition on retention. A cross-sectional clinical study. The study included 30 infants diagnosed with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (16 unilateral, 14 bilateral). Two molding plates were fabricated for each infant, and their accuracy and retention were evaluated. The data were analyzed using independent t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, and Wilcoxon rank tests. Accuracy: The accuracy of the molding plates was assessed by measuring the virtual gap between the inner surface of the plates and their working cast using Exocad software. The accuracy was evaluated in different regions (anterior, middle, and posterior) and compared between PET-G and PMMA materials. Retention: The retention of the molding plates was measured using a digital force gauge, which recorded the force required to dislodge the plates from the infant's mouth. The retention was compared between PET-G and PMMA materials, as well as the effect of adhesive addition on retention. Overall adaptation; PET-G plates showed a significantly smaller gap (mean= 0.264 ±0.106) compared to PMMA (mean= 0.362 ±0.130). Region-specific adaptation: PET-G plates demonstrated better accuracy in all regions (means of anterior =0.246, middle =0.262, posterior =0.282 µm). Significant differences in accuracy were observed in the middle and posterior regions compared to PMMA. Retention assessment revealed that the PET-G groups (with or without adhesive) exhibited significantly higher retention compared to the PMMA groups (P<0.01). PET-G plates demonstrated superior accuracy and retention compared to PMMA, with a significant difference observed in both accuracy and retention. Furthermore, the addition of denture adhesive had a positive effect on retention for both materials.

The influence of lemongrass essential oil addition into heat cured acrylic resin against Candida albicans adhesion

Background: For decades, the use of naturally accessible materials in treating human disease has been widespread. The goal of this study was to determine the anti-fungal effectiveness /of the lemongrass essential oil (LGEO) versus Candida albicans (C. albicans) adhesion to polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) materials. Material and methods: LGEO's anti-fungal activity was tested against C. albicans adhesion using the following concentration of LGEO in PMMA monomer (2.5 vol. %, 5 vol. % LGEO) selected from the pilot study as the best two effective concentrations. A total of 40 specimens were fabricated for the candida adherence test and were subdivided into four equal groups: negative control 0 vol. % addition, experimental with 2.5 vol. % and 5 vol. % of LGEO addition and positive control with 1.4 wt. % nystatin addition. The sterile PMMA specimens were incubated at room temperature for 1 hr in sterile tubes with a sabouraud dextrose broth (SDA) in which a small amount of the yeast was isolated and suspended; under the inverted light microscope, the examination was done. The data were evaluated using a one-way ANOVA test, which showed a significant result at p&lt; 0.05. Results: The findings of the C. albicans adherence test exposed a considerable reduction in the number of C. albicans cells adhering to PMMA after adding 2.5 vol. % and 5 vol. % LGEO compared to specimens from the negative control and positive control groups at p&lt; 0.05. Conclusion: Adding LGEO into a heat-cure acrylic material can result in a denture base material with anti-fungal properties versus C. albicans microorganisms. The experimental group 5 vol. % LGEO additive showed the best anti-fungal activity
