Hydroxyapatite/hyperbranched polyitaconic acid/chitosan composite scaffold for bone tissue engineering

AbstractIn this study, a promising modified composite scaffold (hydroxyapatite/hyperbranched polyitaconic acid/chitosan) was synthesized for bone tissue engineering. Novel hyperbranched polyitaconic acid was prepared through the polymerization of itaconic acid using reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer using a macro‐RAFT agent. The chemical structure of the prepared hyperbranched polyitaconic acid was characterized by FTIR and 1HNMR and was subsequently embedded into hydroxyapatite/chitosan composite. The obtained modified composite scaffold was evaluated by characterizing its porosity, mechanical properties, bioactivity and cytotoxicity. The results showed that the modified composite scaffold had higher mechanical strength (i.e., 0.56 ± 0.03 MPa) in comparison to chitosan/hydroxyapatite scaffold only (i.e., 0.31 ± 0.01 MPa) and also showed higher bioactivity. In addition, the modified composite scaffold (HAP/HBP‐RAFT‐PI/CS) showed anticancer properties and enhanced human skin fibroblasts proliferation.

Synergistic Fertilizers Improved Chemical Properties of Soil in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Field

ABSTRACT In this study, the efficiency of fertilizers was improved by coating the fertilizers with a hydrogel formed by the polymerization of itaconic acid (IA), maleic acid (MA), acrylic acid (AA), and potassium persulfate (KPS) to form a synergistic fertilizer and improve its slow-release performance. The effect of synergistic fertilizers on the changes in soil nutrients in wheat fields was studied through field and soil column experiments using ordinary and commercial synergistic fertilizers as controls and different application rates of `synergistic fertilizers as treatments. The results revealed that the alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (N) and total N contents were significantly higher in T1 than that in CK, and the treatments were ranked as T3 > T2 > T5 > T1 > CK > T4. The difference in the alkali-hydrolyzed N and total N contents between CK and T3 was significant. In terms of available phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents, the treatments were ranked as T1 > T4 > T2 > CK > T3 in all soil layers and T3 > T2 > T5 > T1 > CK > T4 in the soil column. The treatments were ranked as T4>CK>T3>T1>T2 in terms of soil organic matter (SOM) content. Compared with ordinary fertilizers, synergistic fertilizers could significantly increase the soil total N, alkali-hydrolyzed N, available P, and available K contents. Compared with ordinary slow-release fertilizers in the market, the effect of synergistic fertilizers is better in improving the use efficiency of fertilizers. By slowly releasing nutrients, synergistic fertilizers can continuously provide nutrients for the growth and development of wheat and improve the use efficiency of fertilizer.

Reactivity Ratios Estimation of the Free‐Radical Polymerization of Itaconic Acid and N‐Vinyl‐2‐Pyrrolidone by the Error‐in‐Variables Methodology

AbstractDesigned copolymers require an understanding of the relative reactivity ratios of the monomer pair and a proper regression technique that can extract this data from the experiments. An implementation of the error‐in‐variables method previously describes in the literature is written and made available for use, along with an high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methodology for acquiring the kinetic data for the regression analysis of the itaconic acid and N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (IA/NVP) free‐radical copolymerization system. From the data, it is observed that higher initial mole fractions of IA in the reaction medium change the reaction kinetics, limiting the validity of the Mayo–Lewis model to a narrow range of initial mole fractions of IA. This effect is not observed at molar fractions below 10%, enabling the parameters to be estimated. The performance of the developed algorithm is satisfactory, and within less than 5% error when applied to data found in the literature. The parameters estimated by the algorithm for the IA/NVP system are r1 = 0.3046 and r2 = 0.0170, with IA as compound 1. A rather large deviation is observed for r1 and this is attributed to measurement errors associated with the low IA concentrations and high initial reaction rates.

Highly efficient polymer‐stabilized palladium heterogeneous catalyst: Synthesis, characterization and application for Suzuki–Miyaura and Mizoroki–Heck coupling reactions

A suitable approach to stabilize palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs), with an average diameter of 3–4 nm, on magnetic polymer is described. A new magnetic polymer containing 4′‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine (HPTPy) ligand was prepared by the polymerization of itaconic acid (ITC) as a monomer and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) as a cross‐linker and fully characterized. Pd NPs embedded on the magnetic polymer were successfully applied in Suzuki–Miyaura and Mizoroki–Heck coupling reactions under low palladium loading conditions, and provided the corresponding products with excellent yields (up to 98%) and high catalytic activities (TOF up to 257 hr−1). Also, the catalyst can be easily separated and reused for at least consecutive five times with a small drop in catalytic activity.

Dual-responsive semi-IPN copolymer nanogels based on poly (itaconic acid) and hydroxypropyl cellulose as a carrier for controlled drug release

Dual-responsive nanogels were prepared by polymerization of itaconic acid (IA) and copolymerization with methacrylic acid (MA) in aqueous solution of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and cross-linking with N, N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAm) through an easy and green process. FTIR spectroscopy, TEM, AFM, DLS and zeta potential studies confirmed the semi-interpenetrating (semi-IPN) polymer network structure of nanogels. The LCST of HPC was increased to a higher temperature than HPC’s intrinsic LCST, while the presence of the MA comonomer improved the hydrophobicity of the copolymer and reduced LCST to about body temperature and suppressed the excessive nanogel aggregation. It was found that the concentration of reactants impacted the process of nanogel formation. Additionally, an increasing of cross-linker concentration led to a reduced size of HPC nanogels. Besides, the diameter of nanogels was changed with the temperature and pH. TEM and AFM photographs of copolymer nanogels illustrated that the nanoparticles with small diameters (<100 nm) were prepared. With loading the doxorubicin into the copolymer nanogels, the particle size became larger (about 150 nm) and due to the electrostatic interaction of the cationic drug with anionic particles, the zeta potential was increased. Drug release processes were followed at pH = 5.0 and 7.4 and with 37- and 41-°C temperatures, respectively. The maximum in-vitro release studies of drug-loaded nanogels, which is 91% for the pH 5.0 buffer solution at 41 °C, demonstrated the temperature- and pH-sensitivity of prepared copolymer nanogels.

Template Preparation of Poly(Vinylpyrrolidone-Itaconic Acid) and Their Application in Removal of Copper Ions

Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone-itaconic acid) P(VP-IA) was prepared by the template polymerization of itaconic acid (IA) in the presence of PVP as a template polymer using gamma rays. Fourier transform infrared results showed that the interpolymer complexes were formed by hydrogen bonds between the carboxyl groups of PIA and the carbonyl groups of PVP. P(VP-IA) resin could be employed as a potential adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals such as Cu(II). The capacity of the prepared polymer containing different amounts of PVP, N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide (NMBA) and IA concentration was investigated. It is obvious that the adsorption capacity increased with increasing itaconic acid content. Although it decreased with increasing the concentration of PVP and NMBA. P(VP-IA) was found to be a potential adsorbent for removal of copper from aqueous medium. Detail adsorption study of Cu(II) on P(VP-IA) was investigated. Batch adsorption study was carried out as a function of contact time, adsorbent dose, and pH. Adsorption isotherms of Cu(II) on adsorbents were determined and correlated with common isotherm equations such as Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cu(II) on P(VP-IA) were found to be 131 mg g−1.

Polymerization of itaconic acid

Poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) has been prepared by various methods namely in radical polymerization in the presence of various initiators and using water or dioxane as reaction medium, or by poly(itaconic anhydride) hydrolysis. The main purpose was to investigate the effect of method of synthesis on the chemical structure of the product. Possibilities of the structures described by Formula (II) or (III) occurring have been considered. The following methods were used for PIA characterization: FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, elemental analysis, size exclusion chromatography and conductometric titration as well as potentiometric titration. The reasons of known phenomenon of limited availability of PIA carboxylic groups in titration conditions were discussed. Significant effect of drying conditions on the results obtained suggests the importance of keeping the drying conditions constant. Two types of neighborhood of methylene or carboxylic groups in PIA have been found.

Synthesis and characterization of complexes between poly(itaconic acid) and poly(ethylene glycol)

Interpolymer complexes of poly(itaconic acid) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PIA/PEG) were prepared by two different procedures: simple mixing of preformed PIA and PEG and by polymerization of itaconic acid on poly(ethylene glycol) as a template. Complex formation was attributed to hydrogen bond formation between the carboxyl group of PIA and the ether group of PEG. The two types of complexes were characterized by viscometric measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and adhesive force measurements. The results indicate that complexes prepared by template polymerization have a stronger hydrogen bonding and hence more ordered structure and better mucoadhesive properties.

The synthesis and characterization of poly(itaconic) acid

Poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) was obtained indirectly, by the hydrolysis of PIA esters and directly by the polymerization of itaconic acid in water or methanol at 30°C. The first method was not satisfactory but the second gave better results. The elemental composition of the synthetized samples deviated very little from the calculated values. Several crude polymers were fractionated in methanol/isopropanol and the fractions characterized by viscosity and light scattering. The statistically calculated LVN/MW relation, valid for the undissociated polymer, was treated according to the method of Stockmayer and Kurata, to calculate the unperturbed dimensions and to compare them with those of other polymers.

The effect of carboxylic monomers on surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization

A study was made of the effect of carboxylic monomers on the surfactant-free emulsion polymerization of styrene and styrene–butadiene. Acid monomers, such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and itaconic acid, were shown to play a critical role in particle formation and particle stabilization in such systems. In the emulsion polymerization of styrene, methacrylic acid forms particles more efficiently than acrylic acid. This difference is attributed to the more hydrophobic nature of the methacrylic monomer which allows it to diffuse more rapidly to the particle surface where it acts to prevent agglomeration. The ability of carboxyl groups to orient at the particle–water interface was studied by acid–base and soap titrations of carboxylated styrene–butadiene latices. The polymerization of itaconic acid onto the particle surface of a styrene–butadiene latex produces a surface carboxyl density much higher than is obtainable with classically adsorbed surfactants. This result is used to explain the greater stability of carboxylated versus noncarboxylated emulsion polymers. During the polymerization of styrene–butadiene latices, carboxyl groups dervied from methacrylic acid are shown to be buried more deeply into the particle as compared to carboxyls derived from the more hydrophilic acrylic acid which orient more at the particle–water interface.
