Synthesis and cationic ring‐opening polymerization of oxetane monomer containing five‐membered cyclic carbonate moiety via highly chemoselective addition of CO2

ABSTRACTThe bicyclic amidinium iodide effectively catalyzed the reaction of carbon dioxide and the epoxy‐containing oxetane under ordinary pressure and mild conditions with high chemoselectivity to give the corresponding oxetane monomer containing five‐membered cyclic carbonate quantitatively. The cationic ring‐opening polymerization of the obtained monomer by boron trifluoride diethyl ether proceeded to give linear polyoxetane bearing five‐membered cyclic carbonate pendant group in high yield. The molecular weight of the polyoxetane was higher than that of polyepoxide obtained by the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of epoxide monomer containing five‐membered cyclic carbonate. The cyclic carbonate functional crosslinked polyoxetanes were also synthesized by the cationic ring‐opening copolymerization of cyclic carbonate having oxetane and commercially available bisoxetane monomers. Analyses of the resulting polyoxetanes were performed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, size exclusion chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation and Thermal Properties of Polycarbonates/esters Catalyzed by Using Dinuclear Salph‐Al from Ring‐Opening Polymerization of Epoxide Monomers

A dinuclear Salph-Al complex/bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride catalyst system was synthesized and employed for cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and CO2 copolymerization. The catalyst system had an excellent selectivity of 99 % for carbonate linkages and the resultant poly(cyclohexene carbonate) (PCHC) had a high glass transition temperature (Tg ) of 123.8 °C and a thermal decomposition temperature (5 % weight loss; Td 5 % ) of 265 °C. Furthermore, this catalyst system was active in the polymerization of phthalic anhydride (PA) and epoxides. Poly(CHO-alt-PA) was completely alternating, and had improved thermal properties (Tg =142.7 and Td 5 % =295 °C) compared with PCHC. The Tg values of the polyesters could be adjusted by addition of PO to the CHO/PA reaction system. For the CHO/PO/PA terpolymerization, CHO and PO participated concurrently and proportionally in the chain growth and the obtained terpolyesters had tunable Tg values from 62.8 to 142.7 °C depending on the CHO/PO feed ratio.

Benzylpyrazinium Salts as Photo-Initiators in the Polymerization of Epoxide Monomers

In order to study the capability of pyrazinium salt derivatives to act as photo-initiators of epoxide monomers, benzyl pyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH), benzyl 3,5-dimethyl pyrazine hexafluoroantimonate (BDH) and benzyl quinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate (BQH) were synthesized by the Menschutkin reaction of benzyl bromide with pyrazine, 2,6-dimethyl pyrazine, and quinoxaline, followed by exchanging with hexafluoroantimonate (SbF6). BPH, BDH, and BQH exhibited characteristic ultraviolet (UV) absorbance as well as exothermic peaks as a function of irradiation time in a differential photo-calorimeter (DPC). In the absence of photo-irradiation, cyclohexene oxide (CHO) underwent slow polymerization at 25 °C using BPH derivatives, but quantitative conversion was achieved even after a 5-min photo-irradiation. In addition, photo-irradiation was required for the photo-polymerization of CHO and styrene oxide (STO), which was characterized by a short induction period followed by a very rapid and exothermic polymerization. While glycidyl methyl ether (GME) required long induction periods, glycidyl phenyl ether (GPE) underwent rather slow and/or no photo-polymerization. The reactivity order of the monomers was CHO > STO >> GME >>> GPE, and the reactivity order for the photo-polymerization of CHO was BPH > BQH > BDH. It was found that BPH, BDH, and BQH could serve as photo-latent initiators for CHO, STO and GME, respectively.

Aluminum Nanoparticles Capped by Polymerization of Alkyl-Substituted Epoxides: Ratio-Dependent Stability and Particle Size

We report here on the polymerization of epoxide monomers on incipient aluminum nanoparticle cores and the effects of changing the epoxide-capping precursor and the metallic monomer ratio on the resultant stability and particle size of passivated and capped aluminum nanoparticles. When altering the ratio of aluminum to cap monomer precursor, nanoparticles capped with epoxydodecane, epoxyhexane, and epoxyisobutane show a clear decreasing trend in stability with decreasing alkane substituent length. The nanoparticle core size was unaffected by cap ratio or composition. PXRD (powder X-ray diffraction) and DSC/TGA (differential scanning calorimetry/thermal gravimetric analysis) confirm the presence of successfully passivated face-centered cubic (fcc) aluminum nanoparticles. We also report preliminary results from ATR-FTIR (attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared), (13)C CPMAS (cross-polarization/magic-angle spinning), and (27)Al MAS solid-state NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) measurements. The most stable aluminum nanoparticle-polyether core-shell nanoparticles are found at an Al:monomer mole ratio of 10:1 with an active Al(0) content of 94%.

Cationic Polymerization of Epoxides using Novel Xanthenyl Phosphonium Salts as Thermo-latent Initiator

The present article describes the effect of steric and electronic factors on the efficiency of initiators based on novel xanthenyl phosphonium salts for cationic polymerization of epoxide monomers. 2-substituted (IH, ICl, IMe, and IOMe) xanthenyl phosphonium hexafluoroantimonate were synthesized and characterized by NMR (1H, 13C and 31P) and IR spectroscopy. The order of initiator activity in polymerization of glycidyl phenyl ether (GPE), was found as IH> ICl>IMe>IOMe. To understand the effect of steric factor, the polymerization of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) was performed and the order of activity was found as ICl>IH>IMe >IOMe. All the initiators were found to be latent at ambient temperature and initiates polymerization on thermal initiation. The order of initiator activity was influenced by electronic and steric factors in the system. The thermal stability of these salts was measured by Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The solubility of the initiators in various organic solvents and epoxy monomers is also discussed.

Modification of photoinitiated cationic epoxide polymerizations by sulfides

AbstractThe addition of sulfides has a marked effect on the rates of onium salt induced photoinitiated cationic ring‐opening polymerizations of epoxide monomers. Various behaviors have been observed that depend on the structure of the sulfide. Dialkyl sulfides strongly inhibit the photopolymerizations of these monomers, whereas diaryl sulfides have a retarding effect on the photopolymerizations. Real‐time infrared spectroscopy and optical pyrometry have been employed as analytical methods to probe the kinetic effects of the addition of a variety of sulfides on cationic epoxide ring‐opening photopolymerizations. A mechanism is proposed that involves the formation of sulfonium salts as intermediates. The observations made in this study have important implications for cationic photopolymerizations in general and for photoinitiated cationic ring‐opening polymerizations of epoxides in particular. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cationic Polymerization: New Developments and Applications

AbstractThe chemistry and technology of photoinitiated cationic polymerization is a rapidly advancing field of investigation. This article reports on recent developments made in our laboratory in the development of new photoinitiators and photosensitizers. S,S‐Dialkyl‐S‐phenacylsulfonium salts have been prepared using a new, highly efficient and cost‐effective synthetic method and their use in the polymerization of various monomer systems studied. Also described is the development of alkoxyanthracene photosensitizers that may be employed to broaden the spectral sensitivity of various onium salt photoinitiators including the new S,S‐dialkyl‐S‐phenacylsulfonium salts. A marked acceleration of the rate of the ring‐opening polymerization of epoxide monomers was achieved using these photosensitizers. This article concludes with a brief discussion of the use of photoinitiated cationic polymerizations in such typical applications as can coatings, silicone release coatings and in stereolithography.

Advances in the Design of Photoinitiators, Photo‐Sensitizers and Monomers for Photoinitiated Cationic Polymerization

AbstractThe present article reports on recent work from this laboratory that has led to advances in several areas of the field of photoinitiated cationic polymerization. Two different classes of novel photoinitiators 5‐arylthianthrenium salts and 4‐hydroxyphenyl dialkylsulfonium salts have been prepared and their use in the polymerization of various monomer systems studied. Also described is the development of both monomeric and polymeric photosensitizers that may be employed to broaden the spectral sensitivity of various onium salt photoinitiators. Acceleration of rate of the ring‐opening polymerization of epoxide monomers has been achieved through the use of benzyl alcohols. Further, benzyl alcohols bearing sensitizing groups were found to be especially interesting as combination accelerators‐photosensitizers. Lastly, epoxy monomers having groups with easily abstractable protons display exceptional reactivity in photoinitiated ring‐opening cationic polymerization. A mechanism has been proposed to explain this observation.

Benzyl alcohols as accelerators in the photoinitiated cationic polymerization of epoxide monomers

AbstractBenzyl alcohols display marked accelerating effects on the onium salt photoinitiated cationic ring‐opening polymerizations of epoxide monomers. The participation of radicals in these polymerizations was demonstrated, and a pronounced accelerating effect on the polymerization rate was observed depending on the character of the substituent on the benzene ring of the alcohol. 4‐Methoxybenzyl alcohol was considerably more reactive than benzyl alcohol, whereas the analogous chloro‐ and nitrosubstituted compounds were less reactive. Piperonyl alcohol was even more reactive as an accelerator in these polymerizations. The UV irradiation of an onium salt cationic photoinitiator generates Brönsted acids that initiate the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of the epoxide monomer. In the presence of benzyl alcohol, the usual polymerization mechanism is diverted and proceeds by a more‐rapid activated monomer mechanism. As a result, benzyl ether groups are incorporated at the termini of the polymer chains. Aryl radicals that are also generated by photolysis of the onium salt abstract labile benzyl ether protons, and the benzyl ether radicals that are produced are subsequently oxidized by the onium salt to afford the corresponding benzyl carbocations. This takes place by a chain process. The polymer bound benzyl cations serve as additional sites for the initiation of cationic polymerization. It is proposed that these two mechanisms acting in synergy with one another account for the observed accelerating effect on the polymerization rate. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. PHOTOINITIATED CATIONIC POLYMERIZATION OF EPOXY MONOMERS IN THE PRESENCE OF POLY(3,4-EPOXY-1-BUTENE)

ABSTRACT Hydroxyl-terminated poly(3,4-epoxy-1-butene) (polyEPB) is an interesting and highly useful agent for the acceleration of the photoinitiated cationic ring-opening polymerization of epoxide monomers. Kinetic investigations using real-time infrared spectroscopy have shown that the observed acceleration of the polymerization is due to two independent mechanisms. Crosslinking polymerization of epoxide monomers is accelerated due to an activated monomer mechanism that results in facile chain transfer due to interaction of the terminal hydroxyl groups of polyEPB with the growing oxonium ion chain ends. A second mechanism involving participation of polyEPB in a free radical chain induced decomposition of the onium salt photoinitiator is mainly responsible for the observed acceleration in the rate of polymerization. A large number of polymer-bound carbocationic species are generated by this mechanism that are capable of initiating polymerization of the epoxide monomer.
