Seasonal variation and concentration of PAHs in Lake Balaton sediment: A study on molecular weight distribution and sources of pollution

The temporal and spatial variations of 16 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) were examined at multiple sites around Lake Balaton from February 2023 to January 2024. The results indicated that the concentrations of PAHs in sediment were high during the winter months, 448.35 to 619.77 ng/g dry weight, and low during the summer months, 257.21 to 465.49 ng/g dry weight. The concentration of high molecular weight PAHs (HMWPAHs), consisting of 5–6 rings, was greater than that of low molecular weight PAHs (LMWPAHs), which had 2–3 rings. The total incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for both dermal and ingestion pathways was high for both adults and children during the four seasons, with the highest records as the following: winter > spring > summer > autumn. The ecological effects of the 16 PAHs were negligible except for acenaphthylene (Acy) and fluorene (Fl), which displayed slightly higher concentrations during the autumn and spring, respectively.

[Spatial-temporal Distribution and Source Analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Sediments of Poyang Lake].

The concentrations, spatial-temporal distribution, and influencing factors of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediments of Poyang Lake were studied, and a quantitative source analysis of PAHs in different areas of the lake was conducted. PAHs were widespread within the sediments. The concentrations of ∑16PAHs in the surface sediments of all sites ranged from 203 to 2 318 μg·kg-1. The concentrations of PAHs in the surface sediments of the lake body were higher than those in the surface sediments of the inlet rivers. The ratio of PAHs in Poyang Lake was 4 rings > 5 rings > 6 rings > 3 rings > 2 rings; the composition of 4-ring PAHs was dominant, and its content accounted for 86.11% of ∑16PAHs. The 2- and 3-ring and some 4-ring PAHs, including Flua and Pyr, were more susceptible to SOM, and the 4 through 6-ring PAHs were more susceptible to ORP and heavy metals and other environmental factors. Spatially, the higher concentration of ∑16PAHs occurred in the area of the lake adjacent to Duchang County and Poyang County, where the terrain was relatively closed, and the water exchange with the surrounding area was less than that in other sections, which was not conducive to the migration, transformation, and degradation of pollutants. In the temporal distribution, the changes in PAHs concentration level and the development of GDP in Jiangxi Province showed high consistency, and the influence of economic development and human activities might have been the main reason for the increasing PAHs concentration level. The main sources of PAHs in surface sediments of Poyang Lake included petroleum pollution and oil and coal and biomass combustion sources, and there were some spatial differences in PAHs sources in different regions. This study can provide a reference for PAHs pollution in surface sediments of Poyang Lake, which is important for the ecological environmental protection and management of Poyang Lake.

Sediment records and multi-media transfer and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Dianchi Lake over the past 100 years

This study analyzed the fate and transfer of PAHs through multiple media in Dianchi Lake and the sediment records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments. The model simulation results showed the simulated concentrations to be in good agreement with the measured values. The concentration and total amount of PAHs were the highest in the sediment, which is an important sink for PAHs in lake systems. The main transport direction of the PAHs in the three phases was from the atmosphere to the water to the sediment. Advection and emission inputs were the primary input pathways for PAHs in the atmosphere, and advection output was the main removal path. The main input sources pathways for PAHs in sediments was the sedimentation of particulate matter in water, with diffusion and degradation being the primary methods of removal. Advection and atmospheric dry and wet deposition were the main sources of PAHs in water, with particulate deposition being the primary removal process. The range of PAHs was 336–3520 ng/g in sediments in Dianchi Lake, with an average of 1569 ng/g, peaking in 2012. Among the predicted future PAH concentrations in the sediments under the five shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), the lowest PAH concentration was found under SSP3 from 2025 to 2035, whereas the lowest PAH concentration was found under SSP4 from 2035 to 2050. In the sustainable path of SSP1, although the concentration of PAH pollutants showed an increasing trend in the short term, the increase in PAHs concentration in sediments slowed in the long run.

Sources, Occurrences, and Risks of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydro-Carbons (PAHs) in Bangladesh: A Review of Current Status

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution has emerged as a significant environmental issue in Bangladesh in the recent years, driven by both economic and population growth. This review aims to investigate the current trends in PAHs pollution research, covering sediments, water, aquatic organisms, air particles, and associated health risks in Bangladesh. A comparative analysis with PAHs research in other countries is conducted, and potential future research directions are explored. This review suggests that the research on PAHs pollution in Bangladesh is less well studied and has fewer research publications compared to other countries. Dominant sources of PAHs in Bangladesh are fossil fuel combustion, petroleum hydrocarbons, urban discharges, industrial emissions, shipbreaking, and shipping activities. The concentrations of PAHs in sediments, water, air particles, and aquatic organisms in Bangladesh were found to be higher than those in most of the other countries around the world. Therefore, coastal sediments showed higher PAHs pollution than urban areas. Health risk assessments reveal both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to residents in Bangladesh due to the consumption of aquatic organisms. According to this investigation, it can be concluded that there are considerably higher PAHs concentrations in different environmental compartments in Bangladesh, which have received less research attention compared with other countries of the world. Considering these circumstances, this review recommends that future PAHs pollution research directions should focus on aquatic ecosystems, shipbreaking areas, air particles, and direct exposure to human health risks. Therefore, this study recommends addressing the identification of PAH sources, bioaccumulation, biomagnification in the food web, and biomarker responses of benthic organisms in future PAHs pollution research.

Does mangrove leave falling dominate the bury of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the mangrove of China?

Mangrove wetlands are vital coastal ecosystems that can absorb and accumulate pollutants. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants that pose potential risks to ecosystems and human health. However, their source and transport fate in mangrove areas are poorly understood. This study investigates 29 PAHs pollution of water and sediment in Zhangjiangkou Mangrove Wetland, the northernmost large-scale mangrove wetland reserve in China. We examine the distribution, source, transport mechanisms and risk assessment of PAHs. The results show that the concentrations of PAHs in mangrove sediment range from 55.62 to 347.36 ng/g (DW), with 5-ring PAHs being the dominant species. While the concentrations of PAHs in surface water range from 10.61 to 46.39 ng/L, with 2-ring PAHs and alkylated PAHs being the dominant species. The PAHs concentrations in surface water and sediment of river are higher than those in mangrove area, indicating that mangrove water could receive PAHs through tidal exchange. Based on diagnostic ratios (DRs), principal component analysis (PCA), and positive matrix factorization (PMF), we infer that the leaf deposition (48.55%) could be an important pathway of PAHs in mangrove sediment except for river water transport (51.45%), while the PAHs in estuary water originate mainly from point sources such as biomass burning (50.96%) and traffic emission (49.04%). The range of toxic equivalents in surface water and sediment was 2.73–16.09 ng TEQ g−1 and 0.03–3.63 ng/L, respectively. Although the ecological risk assessment suggests that the PAHs pollution in surface water and sediment poses a low risk, we recommend more attention to the protection of the mangrove ecosystem. This study reveals that mangrove leaf falling might be a significant mechanism of PAH sequestration in the mangrove system, which deserves more attention in future research.

Spatial distribution and partition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water and sediment of the southern Bohai Sea: Yellow River and PAH property influences

The marginal Bohai Sea, connected to the northwestern Pacific Ocean, is threatened by human activity. The Yellow River, the second largest river in China, drains large amounts of water, silts, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the southern Bohai Sea; however, to what extent the Yellow River inputs influence the spatial distributions and partitions of PAHs in the southern Bohai Sea is not well known. Therefore, this study collected surface water, bottom water, and sediment samples from the southern Bohai Sea and analyzed them to examine the spatial distributions and partitions of 15 priority PAHs. The results showed that PAH concentrations ranged from 26.9 to 50.1 ng L–1 in surface water, 18.8 to 44.1 ng L–1 in bottom water, and 7.4 to 143.9 ng g–1 in sediment, with higher proportions of four-, five-, and six-ring PAHs in sediment than in water. PAH inputs from the Yellow River and sea coastal currents determined the spatial distribution of PAH concentrations in water and sediment, with an overall decrease from the estuary to the southeast. However, the solid dilution effect of input silts from the Yellow River and the liquid dilution effect of water from the Yellow River and Yellow Sea led to lower PAH concentrations in the water and sediment of the southern Bohai Sea than those in other areas of the Bohai Sea. PAH exchange between the atmosphere and seawater led to significantly higher individual PAH concentrations (except for acenaphthylene) in the surface water than in the bottom water, with ratios significantly related to the PAH n-octanol-water partition coefficient, organic carbon-water partition coefficient, and Henry's law constants. These parameters also determined PAH partitioning between the bottom water and sediment. Individual and total PAH concentrations in the sediment were significantly correlated with organic matter, clay, and silt contents. Therefore, the partitions and spatial distributions of PAHs in the southern Bohai Sea comprehensively depend on PAH properties, PAH inputs from the Yellow River and the atmosphere, sea currents, and seawater and sediment properties. The ecological risks posed by individual PAHs in both water and sediment were negligible or acceptable.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in estuarine sediments as a consequence of the mine tailings remobilization and transport in the Rio Doce basin.

The Fundão dam failure in 2015 severely impaired the economy, the lives of riverine communities, and the aquatic ecosystems of the Rio Doce basin in southeast Brazil. Several contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), were transported downstream, deposited in the estuary, and released into the Atlantic Ocean. The high concentration of PAHs in estuarine sediments may pose ecological risks and deleterious effects to benthic organisms, so here we aimed at determining the source and fate of these compounds before and after the tailings' arrival. The mean concentration of the analyzed Σ16PAHs increased from 34.05 µg kg-1 in the prefailure period to 751.77 µg kg-1 one year after the arrival of the tailing. The classification of the sediment quality changed from low to moderate contamination. Our results suggest that there was PAHs remobilization by mine tailings along the Rio Doce basin. The target analytes exhibited mostly a pyrolytic profile from fossil fuel and biomass burning. In addition to other contaminants deposited in the estuary after the arrival of the tailings, this study revealed that the profile change of PAHs in the estuary region is a consequence of the mud's erosive power. Concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from the Tampamachoco lagoon, Tuxpan River mouth, Gulf of Mexico

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic chemicals that consist of carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, which are considered as high-priority persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Their source is due to an incomplete burning of fossil fuels and organic materials. In the present study, the distribution and concentrations of 16 priority PAHs in sediments of the Tampamachoco lagoon and Tuxpan River estuary at the Gulf of Mexico were analyzed. The surface sediment samples were collected during the dry (March–June) and rainy (August–November) seasons. PAHs were analyzed by means of a gas capillary chromatography-FID. In dry season, the average concentration of PAHs in sediments was 860 ± 390 ng/g, and in rainy season, it was 1140 ± 450 ng/g. During both seasons, the total concentration of chrysene was high and a domain of the compounds with 4 benzene rings was observed. The source of PAHs was investigated in 78.6% of the lagoon sites. 45.5% revealed indicators of a mixed origin between pyrolytic and petrogenic sources, and 36.4% was petrogenic, and the remaining 18.2% was pyrolytic PAHs.

Distribution, source, and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments from Dingzi Bay, China

This study dissected 21 surface sediment samples collected from the vicinity of Dingzi Bay to understand the distribution and ecological risk of PAHs. The findings revealed that the concentration of PAHs in sediments ranged from 71.38 ng·g−1 to 163.28 ng·g−1, with an average of 106.43 ng·g−1. The main components were 3-ring PAHs. By using the diagnostic ratio and principal component analysis (PCA) approach, it was determined that the main sources of PAHs in the sediments in this region were biomass, coal combustion, and oil leaks. The majority of PAHs have low ecological risk, with just Acenaphthene having slightly higher concentrations than ERL, according to the effective range low and median approaches (ERL and ERM). The examination of the toxic equivalent approach revealed that PAHs in the research area had low levels of toxicity and ecological risk.

Insights about levels and source appointment of petroleum hydrocarbons in Brazilian semi-arid coastal: baseline status assessment for ocean decade targets

The Ocean decade (2021-2030) for sustainable development proclaimed in 2017 by the UN, seeks to promote and conserve the sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. For this, the distribution of n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and biomarkers, in sediments from the Fortaleza coastal zone (Mucuripe harbor (MH) and Inner Continental shelf (ICS)) were used to assess the impacts of anthropogenic activities in the area. The concentrations of total n-alkanes (Σ16 n-alkanes) in MH and ICS sediments varied from 35.9 to 94.9 and 17.9 to 197.3μgg-1, respectively, while the isoprenoids phytane and pristane in MH and ICS sediments ranged from 0.1 to 1.69 ug g-1 and from 0.14 and 1.20μgg-1, respectively. Most of the sediment samples presented carbon preference index (CPI) values close to unity, indicating that the area is submitted to petroleum-related sources. The concentrations of Σ16 PAHs in MH and ICS sediments varied from 87.0 to 562.0 and 98 to 288.0ngg-1. This work presents the first investigation of the petroleum biomarkers hopanes and steranes in the Fortaleza coastal zone, in which ΣBiomarkers varied from 0.10 to 1.79 and 0.02 to 0.24 ug g-1 in MH and ICS sediments, respectively. The presence at stations of biomarkers also indicates petrogenic input. The diagnosis of the distribution of pollutants in the investigated zones of the Fortaleza coast suggests contamination from urban areas and oil spills and vessel traffic.

Spatiotemporal Distribution and Driving Factors of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Inland Sediments of China

This study reviewed the spatial and temporal distributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during 2000-2010 in inland sediments of China and quantified the underlying socioeconomic determinants based on the structural equation model and gravity model. We found that PAHs concentrations in the sediments of eight different regions followed the order of Northern coast>Northeast>Eastern coast>Southern coast>Middle Yellow River>Middle Yangtze River>Southwest>Northwest. The Southern coast, Middle Yangtze River, and Southern coast regions showed large contributions to the high-molecular weight PAHs, whereas the Northeast, Northwest, and Middle Yellow River regions showed high contributions to the low-molecular weight PAHs. PAHs concentrations continuously increased from the year 2000 followed by a gradual decline after 2006, with significant differences in the year when PAHs levels reached their peak. PAHs concentrations of sediment in developed regions declined in recent years following a continuous increase in the 2000s; however, they still increased rapidly in developing regions owing to fast economic development. In addition, the increment rate of PAHs concentrations in sediment at the remote or less-developed regions was slower than that at the developed regions. Urbanization and industrialization had an important effect on PAHs in the sediments, and the largest influencing factor was the economic development.

Distribution, source, risk and phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in typical urban landscape waters recharged by reclaimed water

A park that had used reclaimed water as the sole water supply for fourteen years, was selected to analyze the distribution, sources and risks of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in waters and sediments. The effects of phytoremediation were investigated in waterbodies classified as phytoremediation, transitional and non-phytoremediation areas. Diagnostic ratio (DR) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to analyze the sources of PAHs, while risk quotient (RQ) was used as risk assessment tool. Results showed that ∑PAH concentrations in sediments ranged from 29.4 to 1245.6 ng‧g−1, with average of 354.3 ng‧g−1, corresponding to a moderate pollution level. The concentration of PAHs in water ranged from 10.6 to 326.3 ng‧L−1, with average of 147.2 ng‧L−1, corresponding to a low pollution level. The ∑PAHs in sediments showed a downward trend from northwest to southeast along with the water flow direction, with average values of 459.5, 362.9 and 246.1 ng‧L−1 in the upstream, midstream and downstream, respectively. In contrast, PAH concentrations in water were consistent with recreational activities in the urban park area. There were 95% of water samples and 72% of sediment samples obtaining the Ant/(Ant + Phe) > 0.1 and Flu/(Flu + Pyr) > 0.5, indicating that coal combustion was the major source of PAHs in both the water and sediment. The RQ∑PAH(NCs) values in water and sediment were all between 1 and 800, while RQ∑PAH(MPCs) reached equal to 0, suggesting that ∑PAHs presented a low ecological risk. Acenaphthene accounted for 28.4% of RQ(NCs), and became the most risk PAH in water column. Aquatic plants effectively removed high-ring PAHs from water and middle-ring PAHs from sediments, reducing the overall risks posed by PAHs.

Sedimentary records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from three enclosed lakes in China: Response to energy structure and economic development

Historical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution was explored through the sedimentary records of three lakes: Huguangyan Maar Lake (HGY) in South China, Mayinghai Lake (MYH) in North China, and Sihailongwan Lake (SHLW) in Northeast China. In these three lakes, the PAH concentrations in sediments are still rising, showing the different trend to lakes in developed countries. PAH pollution in South China occurred from 1850, much earlier than the increases since 1980 observed in North and Northeast China. The temporal trends of PAH concentrations in lake sediments are highly correlated with local economic development. Spatially, although the region where HGY is located has the highest gross domestic product, higher fluxes of PAHs were found in MYH sediments, indicating that atmospheric PAH pollution in North China might be more serious, and that PAH pollution is not fully correlated with economic development. Source analysis suggested that the PAHs in lake sediments are mainly derived from oil leaks, coal and biomass combustion, vehicle emissions, and diagenesis. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model revealed that the contribution of vehicle emissions and coal combustion to PAHs has increased significantly in the past 40 years. Benzo(a)pyrene equivalent (BaPE) in the surface sediments of MYH and SHLW were similar and higher than in HGY. In HGY, vehicle emissions posed the highest toxic risk, followed by coal combustion. However, in MYH, the toxicity risk of vehicle emissions was close to that of coal and biomass combustion due to the highly developed coal industry in Shanxi Province. In SHLW, the contribution of fossil fuel combustion to BaPE was significantly higher than that of biomass combustion. This study provides important information for understanding PAH pollution affected by anthropogenic activities in the Anthropocene and provides a scientific basis for formulating PAH pollution control strategies.

Anthropogenic and natural hydrocarbons in water and sediments of the Kara Sea.

The results on the content and composition of aliphatic (AHСs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at the geochemical barrier between the Kara Sea and the Ob and Yenisei Rivers are discussed in comparison with those in the mouth areas of the Lena, Khatanga, Indigirka and Kolyma. It has been established that hydrocarbon concentrations sharply decrease in the river-sea mixing zones, and their composition, and the ratio of their dissolved and suspended forms change. Besides, the research season plays a great role, as the highest content of hydrocarbons and particulate matter was found in the Ob Gulf during the flood, when the concentrations of AHCs in surface waters reached 325μg/L, PAHs -15ng/L, particulate matter-15.5mg/L. In the Kara Sea itself, AHC concentrations increased on average from 20 to 59μg/L, that is most likely associated with the melting of seasonal ice and floods. Anthropogenic influence was found in river waters, where the proportion of naphthalenes, which marks oil products, and pyrene, which marks pyrogenic PAHs, is increased. In the Ob Gulf is linked to an increase in navigation along the Northern Sea Route and the functioning of the port of Sabetta. In the mouth area of the Yenisei, the concentrations of both AHC and PAH in surface waters and sediments varied in a smaller range than in the mouth area of the Ob, which is due to the nature of the rocks that make up the catchment areas of these rivers, as well as the regulation of the Yenisei runoff. The hydrological features of the estuarine areas can lead to increased AHC concentrations (the mouth of the Khatanga, up to 189μg/L, 2.6μg/mg SPM). The minimum AHC content in SPM and sediments in the river transects was established in the East Siberian rivers (Indigirka, Kolyma), associated with the decreasing productivity in waters from the Western Arctic seas to the Eastern.

Toxicity determination, pollution source delineation, and microbial diversity evaluation of PAHs-contaminated sediments for an urban river.

The Feng-Sang River is a metropolitan river in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. In this study, Feng-Sang River sediments were analyzed to investigate the distributions and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs), potentially carcinogenic PAHs (TEQcarc ), and toxic equivalence quotient (TEQ) were applied to evaluate influences of PAHs on ecosystems and microbial diversities. Results indicate that PAHs concentrations varied between seasons and locations. The concentrations of ∑16 PAHs ranged from 73.6 to 603.8 ng/kg in dry seasons and from 2.3 to 199.3 ng/kg in wet seasons. This could be because of the flushing effect during wet seasons, which caused the movement and dilution of the PAH-contaminated sediments. Diagnostic ratio analysis infers that high PAHs levels were generated by combustion processes and vehicle traffic, and results from multivariate descriptive statistical analysis also demonstrate that the vehicular traffic pollution could be the major emission source of PAHs contamination. Comparisons of PAHs with SQGs indicate that PAHs concentrations in sediment were below the effects range low (ERL) values, and thus, the immediate threat to organisms might not be significant. The diagnostic ratio analyses are effective methods for PAH source appointment. The metagenomic assay results imply that sediments contained essential microbial species with eminent diversity. The detected PAH-degrading bacteria (Desulfatiglans, Dechloromonas, Sphingomonas, Methylobacterium, Rhodobacter, Clostridium, and Exiguobacterium) played a key role in PAHs biotransformation, and Dechloromonas and Rhodobacter had a higher relative abundance. Results of microbial diversity analyses indicate that the contaminated environment induced the changes of governing microbial groups in sediments. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Diagnostic ratio analyses are effective methods for PAHs source appointment. Microbial composition in sediments are highly affected by anthropogenic pollution. Combustion and vehicle traffic contribute to urban river sediments pollution by PAHs. Dechloromonas and Rhodobacter are dominant PAHs-degrading bacteria in sediments.

Origin and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments core from Tigris, Euphrates and Shatt Al-Arab rivers

Due to the important area of the Tigris, Euphrates and Shatt Al-Arab rivers in Iraq, and the effect of pollutant to theses rivers, the object of study is the origin and sources of PAHs compounds in sediment core samples which collected in 2021 from six important stations that are (Tigris1, Tigris2, Euphrates1, Euphrates2, Shatt Al-Arab1, and Shatt Al-Arab2). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzes by using capillary gas chromatography. The results of PAHs shown in two pattern low and high molecular weight. The total PAHs ranged between 79.141 ng/g at station No. 6 to 3.830 ng/g at station No. 3. The rush to develop industries across the globe accelerates environmental damage brought on by many contaminants, including PAHs. Organic compounds in the PAHs class have two or more aromatic rings. PAHs can be pyrogenic, petrogenic, or biogenic depending on how they develop. Pyrogenic PAHs are produced when various fuels, oil and gas, waste, or other organic materials like fume from oil industries in the area. The investigation showed two patterns of sources petrogenic and pyrogenic with the petrogenic source predominating according to the ratios (low molecular weight/high molecular weight), anthracene/(anthracene+phenanthrene) and fluoranthene/(fluoranthene+pyrene). Additionally, findings indicated that sediment pollution is of a moderate pollution. By adhering to sedimentary particles, PAHs get into the sediments. Based on the physicochemical characteristics of each fraction and the surrounding environment, sediments also serve as a source for some contaminants that re-enter the water column. Lighter PAHs predominated in water samples, while heavier compounds predominated in sediment samples, according to several studies. In addition, it is difficult to remove the high concentrations of PAHs in riverine sediments brought on by industrial activity. While other research indicated significant PAHs pollution in a variety of global environments. Due to the fact that such research helps to lessen the obvious shortage of information regarding such pollutants in Iraqi rivers, this study gives as the baselines for coming research.

Distribution, sources and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in waters and sediments from Olt River dam reservoirs in Romania

This study provides important data on the distribution, sources and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in surface waters and sediments collected from dam reservoirs on middle and lower course of the Olt River, the main tributary of the Danube, until the discharge into the Black Sea. A wide variation range of total PAHs concentrations in water (from 1.3 to 46.2 ng/L) and sediment (from 1.78 to 614.04 μg/kg) samples was emphasized by the results. The highest average PAHs concentration in water was recorded in the cold season and the lowest in the summer. In sediments, no differences were observed depending on the sampling period. Spatial distribution of PAHs in waters and sediments was correlated with the main anthropogenic activities along the river course. Regardless of the method used to attribute PAH sources (diagnostic ratios of specific PAHs, principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis), it was confirmed that the potential anthropogenic sources of PAHs were both pyrogenic (incomplete combustion of biomass and coal) and pyrolytic (incomplete combustion of liquid fossil fuels and vehicle exhaust emissions), with a dominant pyrolytic input. Ecological risk assessment based on environmental quality standards, mean effect range-median quotient (m-ERM-Q), toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) and risk quotient (RQ) methods indicated potentially low ecological risks from PAHs. The ecological status of the Olt river waters poses no potential risk, and pollution of surface sediments can be classified as low polluted, except for two sites near industrial activities classified as moderately polluted. Therefore, a regular monitoring of PAHs concentration in the waters and sediments should be performed to prevent further contamination of PAHs in the studied area, especially in densely populated industrial areas.

Potential sources and toxicity risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments of commercial ports in Taiwan

The accumulation of pollutants in the semi-enclosed waters of ports has long been a concern. This study assessed the pollution status, sources, and toxicity risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of 7 major ports in Taiwan. Total PAHs concentrations in sediments ranged between 8.4 and 572.5 ng/g dw, with an average of 112.4 ± 136.5 ng/g dw. The 3- and 4-ring PAHs (63 %) were the major constituents of PAHs in the sediments. Diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization analyses indicated that PAHs in sediments were mainly contributed by biomass combustion (45.0 %), coal combustion (31.5 %), and vehicle emissions and related fossil fuels (23.5 %). The results of ecological risk assessment showed a low–medium risk of PAHs in the sediments outside the port, whereas most of the sediments within the port presented a medium–high risk. An assessment of the possible human health risks indicated that PAHs were present at acceptable levels.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in remote lakes from the Tibetan Plateau: Concentrations, source, ecological risk, and influencing factors

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have received worldwide attention due to their potential teratogenic, persistent, and carcinogenic characteristics. In this study, the PAHs concentrations in two dated sediment cores taken from central Tibetan Plateau (TP) were analyzed to study the deposition history, potential sources, ecological risks, and influencing factors. Total concentration of PAHs (∑PAHs) ranged from 50.0 to 195 ng g−1 and 51.9–133 ng g−1 in sediments of Pung Co (PC) and Dagze Co (DZC), respectively. 2–3-ring PAHs were dominant in the two lake sediments, accounting for an average of 77.5% and 80.1%, respectively. The historical trends of ∑PAHs in the two lakes allowed to distinguish three periods, namely, relative stability before the 1950s, a gradual increase between the 1950s and the 1990s, and then a decline to the present-day. In addition, the trend in the concentration level of each PAH composition was consistent with ∑PAHs before the 1990s, while they exhibited different trends since the 1990s, which may be the result of a combination of anthropogenic activities and climate change in recent years, whereas before the 1990s the PAH profile was mainly influenced by atmospheric deposition. The results of source apportionment examined according to diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization were consistent and revealed that PAHs were primarily derived from biomass and coal combustion. Significant correlations between PAHs and organic carbon (OC) indicate that OC might be a key factor influencing the concentration of PAHs in sediments. The ecological risk assessment demonstrated that PAHs in TP sediments occurred at a low risk level. Results of this study could be helpful to develop a deeper insight into the deposition history of PAHs in remote lakes of the TP region and explore the response of these variations to climate change and human activities.

Unregulated discharge of wastewater in the Mahanadi River Basin: Risk evaluation due to occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in surface water and sediments

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through contaminated water may adversely affect human health and ecology. Water and sediment samples collected from the Mahanadi River Basin (MRB) were analyzed for the presence of sixteen priority PAHs. Results showed that the concentrations of Σ16 PAHs in water and sediments ranged from 13.1 to 685.4 μg/L and 302.6 to 728.2 ng/g. In river water samples, the highest mean concentrations were recorded for Acenaphthylene (18.73 ± 11.61 μg/L) and Benzo(a)Anthracene (10.11 ± 8 μg/L). On the contrary, the maximum concentration was recorded for Phenanthrene (96.18 ± 50.66 ng/g) and Pyrene (76.69 ± 22.73 ng/g) in sediment samples. Human health risk assessment suggests low risk, with incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) being 37.44 × 10−5 for children and 21.82 × 10−5 for adults. In contrast, ecological risk assessment showed a high toxic equivalent quotient of 40.68 ng/g and mutagenic equivalent quotient of 39.74 ng/g suggesting elevated adverse risk to aquatic species.
