Polyurethane Foam Emission Samplers to Identify Sources of Airborne Polychlorinated Biphenyls from Glass-Block Windows and Other Room Surfaces in a Vermont School.

We hypothesized that emissions of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from Aroclor mixtures present in building materials explain their concentrations in school air. Here, we report a study of airborne concentrations and gas-phase emissions in three elementary school rooms constructed in 1958. We collected airborne PCBs using polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS, n = 6) and PCB emissions from building materials using polyurethane foam passive emission samplers (PUF-PES, n = 17) placed over flat surfaces in school rooms, including vinyl tile floors, carpets, painted bricks, painted drywall, and glass-block windows. We analyzed all 209 congeners represented in 173 chromatographic separations and found that the congener distribution in PUF-PES strongly resembled the predicted diffusive release of gas-phase PCBs from a solid material containing Aroclor 1254. Concentrations of airborne total PCBs ranged from 38 to 180 ng m-3, a range confirmed by an independent laboratory in the same school. These levels exceed action levels for all aged children set by the State of Vermont and exceed guidance levels set by the U.S. EPA for children under age 3. Emissions of PCBs from the glass-block windows (30,000 ng m-2 d-1) greatly exceeded those of all other surfaces, which ranged from 35 to 2700 ng m-2 d-1. This study illustrates the benefit of the direct measurement of PCB emissions to identify the most important building remediation needed to reduce airborne PCB concentrations in schools.

Congener-Specific Emissions from Floors and Walls Characterize Indoor Airborne Polychlorinated Biphenyls.

To reconcile the federal regulation of material polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations with recently implemented state regulations of airborne PCBs, there is a need to characterize the relationship between PCB emissions from surfaces and air concentrations. We hypothesized that the magnitude and congener distribution of emissions from floors and walls fully account for the airborne PCBs measured in rooms constructed during the height of PCB production and sales. We measured emissions of PCB congeners from various wall and floor materials using polyurethane foam passive emission samplers before and after hexane wiping. Our results revealed that PCB emissions from flooring adequately predicted the magnitude and congener distribution of PCBs observed in the room air. Emissions varied by material within a single building (5 × 103 ng m-2 day-1 from wood panel walls to 3 × 104 ng m-2 day-1 from vinyl tile) and within the same room. Yet congener distributions between material emission PCB profiles and room air PCB profiles were statistically similar. Hexane wiping significantly reduced PCB emissions (>60%), indicating the importance of surface films as an ongoing source of airborne PCBs. The magnitude and congener distribution of material bulk concentrations did not explain that of material emissions or air concentrations. Passive measurements of polychlorinated biphenyl emissions from floors in a university building predict the concentrations of PCBs in room air.

Spatio-Temporal Variations, Fugacity Fractions and Air-Soil Exchanges of PCBs in Industrial, Urban and Semi-Rural Sites

This study investigated the spatiotemporal variations in the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners both in soil and ambient air. Soil and air samples were taken simultaneously for three seasons (spring, summer, and autumn) from industrial, urban, and semi-rural areas in Bursa, Turkey. Light and medium PCB homologous groups were dominant in all samples. Total PCB (∑25 PCBs) concentrations in the air were 0.12 ± 0.13, 0.06 ± 0.07, and 0.08 ± 0.11 ng/m3 and in soil were 4.01.±2.38, 5.44 ± 3.14, and 3.66 ± 1.56 ng/g DM for summer, spring, and winter, respectively. Moreover, the samples were taken from different sites to determine the spatial fluctuations. The average ∑25 PCBs in the air were 0.22 ± 0.06, 0.03 ± 0.01, and 0.03 ± 0.02 ng/m3 and in soil were 7.08 ± 1.84, 2.98 ± 0.52, and 3.06 ± 0.70 ng/g DM for industrial, urban and semi-rural sites, respectively. Maximum air and soil PCB concentrations were determined in the industrial region. The spatiotemporal changes in the fugacity fractions and net fluxes were also examined. The direction of the PCB movement was assessed and the results indicated that soil was a diffusive source for PCBs. The calculated fugacity fractions (ff) were above 0.7 while average flux values were calculated as 0.65 ± 0.33 ng/m2-d, 0.21 ± 0.19 ng/m2-d, and 0.26 ± 0.27 ng/m2-day for industrial, urban and semi-rural regions, respectively.

Risk of cardiovascular diseases following residential exposure to airborne polychlorinated biphenyls: A register-based cohort study

BackgroundIndoor air in buildings constructed with materials containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) may be contaminated with especially lower-chlorinated PCBs. So far, the cardiovascular consequences of living with such contamination are unknown. ObjectivesTo determine the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) following residential exposure to predominantly lower-chlorinated PCBs in indoor air. MethodsThe Health Effects of PCBs in Indoor Air (HESPAIR) cohort is register-based with 51 921 residents of two residential areas near Copenhagen: Farum Midtpunkt and Brøndby Strand Parkerne. Here, indoor air was contaminated with PCB in one third of the apartments due to construction with materials containing PCB. Individual PCB exposure was estimated based on register-based information on relocation dates and indoor air PCB measurements in subsets of the apartments. Information on CVD was retrieved from the Danish National Patient Register for the follow-up period of 1977–2018. We estimated adjusted hazard ratios using Cox regression with time-varying exposure. ResultsCumulative residential exposure to airborne PCB was not associated with a higher overall risk for CVD (HR for highly exposed (≥3300 ng/m3 PCB × year): 1.02, 95% CI 0.94–1.10). This was also the case for most of the specific cardiovascular diseases, apart from acute myocardial infarction where a higher risk was observed for residents exposed to ≥3300 ng/m3 PCB × year compared to the reference group (HR 1.17, 95% CI 1.00–1.35). However, no exposure-response relationship was apparent and additional adjustment for education attenuated the risk estimate. DiscussionIn this, to our knowledge, first study ever to examine the risk of CVD following residential exposure to PCBs in indoor air, we observed limited support for cardiovascular effects of living in PCB-contaminated indoor air. Considering the prevalence of exposure to airborne PCBs and lack of literature on their potential health effects, these findings need to be corroborated in other studies.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) in ambient air and deposition in the German background

PCDD/Fs (17 congeners and Σ tetra -to octachloro homologues) and 209 PCBs were investigated in monthly samples of ambient air (gas + particle phase) and atmospheric deposition at two background monitoring sites in Germany in 2018/19. In atmospheric deposition samples, PCDD/F congeners as well as certain PCBs were frequently below the method quantification limits whereas values for PCDD/F homologue groups could be quantified more often. Annual deposition averages for individual PCDD/Fs were between <0.1 μg/m2d and 6.7 μg/m2d. Averages for Σ TeCDD/F to OCDD/F homologue totals in deposition were about 11 pg/m2d and 19 pg/m2d. Total PCB deposition rates were about 1900 pg/m2d and 1550 pg/m2d. PCDD/F + PCB-deposition rates were below 1 pg WHO2005-TEQ/m2d on average. In ambient air, both substance groups were frequently observed. Annual concentration averages for individual PCDD/F were between 0.1 fg/m³ and 50 fg/m³. Average values for Σ TeCDD/F to OCDD/F homologue totals in ambient air were 283 fg/m³ and 162 fg/m³. Total PCB concentrations were about 50 pg/m³ at both sites. PCDD/F + PCB-TEQ values were lower than 5 fg WHO2005-TEQ/m³ on average. Besides the frequently studied dioxin-like PCBs and six indicator PCBs, the analysis of the 209 PCBs (166 separated PCB-peaks) enabled the identification and evaluation of additional PCBs that might be of environmental concern. Of 166 PCBs or PCB-coelutions, up to 144 were quantified in air samples and up to 94 in atmospheric deposition samples. In ambient air, some of these PCBs were observed at levels similar to or exceeding those of the six indicator PCBs. Important additional PCBs in ambient air were PCB 5 + 8, PCB 11, PCB 17, PCB 18, PCB 20 + 33, PCB 31, PCB 43 + 49, PCB 44, PCB 47 + 48 + 65 + 75, PCB 93 + 95 + 98 + 102, PCB 139 + 149, and PCB 151. The presence of these PCBs in atmospheric samples implies that by analysing only selected PCBs potentially important contaminants are overlooked.

Seasonal trends of PCBs in air over Washington DC reveal localized urban sources and the influence of Anacostia River

Semi-volatile organic compounds like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) undergo diffusive exchange flux between a water body and the overlying air. The magnitude of this exchange can be a substantial component of the overall pollutant mass balance and needs to be determined accurately to identify major pollutant sources to the water body and to plan appropriate remedies. For the PCB-impacted Anacostia River in Washington DC (USA), quantification of air-water exchange has been a major data gap. In the present study, polyethylene passive samplers were used to measure PCB concentrations in air phase at six locations in DC over a period of one year to capture spatial and seasonal variations. Concurrent water phase PCB measurements were used to quantify the direction and magnitude of air-water exchange in the Anacostia River. Two locations had nearly an order of magnitude higher air phase PCB concentrations that could be related to localized sources. Remaining four locations provided similar air phase PCB concentrations that averaged from 270 ± 44 pg/m3 (summer) to 32 ± 4.3 pg/m3 (winter). ∑PCB water-air exchange fluxes were positive across all seasons, with net PCB volatilization of 180 ± 19 g/year from the surface water. Volatilization rate was an order of magnitude lower than previously estimated from a fate and transport model. PCB load from atmospheric deposition based on previous studies in this watershed was an order of magnitude lower than the volatilization rate. Results refuted a long-standing understanding of the air phase serving as a source of PCBs to the river as per the currently approved Total Maximum Daily Load assessment. The study demonstrates the utility of passive air phase measurements in delineating local terrestrial sources of pollution as well as providing estimates for air-water exchange to complete a robust mass balance for semi-volatile pollutants in an urban river.

Cancer Risk following Residential Exposure to Airborne Polychlorinated Biphenyls: A Danish Register-Based Cohort Study.

Background:Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are biopersistent chemicals classified as human carcinogens. This classification is primarily based on evidence on higher-chlorinated PCBs found in food. The carcinogenic potential of airborne lower-chlorinated PCBs remains largely unexplored.Objectives:We aimed to investigate cancer risk following residential exposure to airborne PCBs.Methods:Cancer risk was examined in the Health Effects of PCBs in Indoor Air (HESPAIR) cohort of 38,613 residents of two partly PCB-contaminated residential areas in Greater Copenhagen, identified by nationwide registries. PCB exposure was based on relocation dates and indoor air PCB measurements in subsets of apartments. Cancer diagnoses were extracted from the Danish Cancer Registry for the follow-up period of 1970–2018. We estimated adjusted hazard ratios with time-varying cumulative exposure and a 10-y lag using Cox regression.Results:Overall risk of cancer was not associated with , [hazard ratio (HR) for high-exposed vs. low-exposed ; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88, 1.09], but residents exposed to had higher risk of liver cancer (HR ; 95% CI: 1.28, 6.15) and meningiomas (HR ; 95% CI: 1.84, 6.64), with indications of exposure–response relationships. Results were suggestive of a higher risk of pancreatic cancer (HR ; 95% CI: 0.95, 2.64) at the highest aggregated PCB level. For testis cancer, a higher risk was observed among residents exposed to relative to residents exposed to (HR ; 95% CI: 1.41, 6.28), but the risk was not higher for residents exposed to . Apart from this, the risk of specific cancers was similar across exposure groups.Discussion:In this, to our knowledge, first population-based cohort study of residential exposure to airborne PCBs, we found no association between exposure to PCBs in indoor air in private homes and the risk for most of the specific cancers. Seasonal Air–Sea Exchange Dynamics of Polychlorinated Biphenyls Over the East China Marginal Seas: The Role of Water Masses in a Complex Coastal–Ocean Current System

AbstractContinental marginal seas are key reservoirs of anthropogenic pollutants. Understanding the physical processes controlling the air–sea exchange dynamics of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the continental margin seas is crucial to constrain the contribution of PCBs from land and rivers to the ocean; however, the transport and fate of PCBs, and their controlling factors of air–sea exchange in the continental marginal seas still remain poorly understood. Here, we collected atmospheric and surface water samples from the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS) in summer 2018 and winter 2019, and examined the PCB concentrations. The PCB air–sea gas exchange fluxes showed higher net volatilization in winter, largely due to southward movement of the strengthened Yellow Sea Coastal Current and Yangtze River Diluted Water with high PCB concentrations. Both the dissolved PCB concentrations in seawater and wind speed were the primary factors influencing the PCB air–sea exchange fluxes in winter. By contrast, weak PCB volatilization fluxes occurred when the Taiwan Warm Current with low PCB concentrations dominated in the ECS in summer. In comparison, the accumulation and release of some PCB homologues caused by a green tide in the coastal YS could lead to increased volatilization flux in summer. Our results suggest the transfer of air–sea exchange dynamics of PCBs from a water concentration‐dominated pattern to an environmental parameter‐controlled one due to their decreased land‐based input, and highlight the impact of water mass‐triggered changes (environmental parameters and algal blooms) on the air–sea exchange behavior of PCBs in the continental marginal sea.

Accumulations and temporal trends of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in olive tree components.

In this study, ambient air samples, olive tree branches (1- and 2-year-old) and their leaves (particulate and dissolved phase) were collected simultaneously between January and December months at a suburban site of Bursa-Turkey. Total polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations, sampled by employing passive air samplers, ranged from 0.03 to 0.08ng/m3 in the atmosphere. The average annual total PCB concentrations belonging to the tree components were 1.14 ± 0.32ng/g DM in dissolved phase in leaves, 0.71 ± 0.32ng/g DM in particle phase on leaves, 1.06 ± 0.25ng/g DM in 1-year-old branches, and 0.93 ± 0.23ng/g DM in 2-year-old branches. It was determined that the correlation between PCB concentrations in olive tree components and the air was low. This result indicated that besides the tree-air exchange, other possible factors (such as soil-to-tree transitions, wind effect, etc.) affect the levels of PCB concentrations in the tree components. Total PCB concentrations decreased from summer to winter in all samples. The percentage ratio of PCB in the dissolved phase in the leaves was generally higher than other tree components in seasons. PCB homologous distributions indicated 5-CBs were dominant in the tree components and 3-CBs were dominant in the air samples. Highly chlorinated PCB congeners (8-CBs and 9-CBs) were found at low concentrations in both air and tree components samples. The samples indicated that the ratio of PCBs in tree components to the total (tree component+ambient air) PCBs slightly increased with increasing the chlorine number.

Comprehensive Subchronic Inhalation Toxicity Assessment of an Indoor School Air Mixture of PCBs.

Few in vivo inhalation studies have explored the toxicity of environmentally relevant mixtures of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The manufacture of industrial PCBs was banned in 1978, but PCBs continue to be formed in industrial and consumer products. Schools represent a significant source of airborne exposures to legacy and nonlegacy PCBs, placing children at risk. To evaluate the impact of these exposures, we generated an airborne mixture of PCBs, called the School Air Mixture (SAM), to match the profile of an older school from our adolescent cohort study. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed either to SAM or filtered air in nose-only exposure systems, 4 h/day for 4 weeks. Congener-specific air and tissue PCB profiles were assessed using gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). PCB exposures recapitulated the target school air profile with a similarity coefficient, cos θ of 0.83. PCB inhalation yielded μg/g ∑209 PCB levels in tissues. Neurobehavioral testing demonstrated a modest effect on spatial learning and memory in SAM-exposed rats. PCB exposure induced oxidative stress in the liver and lungs, affected the maturational stages of hematopoietic stem cells, reduced telomerase activity in bone marrow cells, and altered the gut microbiota. This is the first study to emulate PCB exposures in a school and comprehensively evaluate toxicity.

Human health risks due to airborne polychlorinated biphenyls are highest in New Bedford Harbor communities living closest to the harbor

In response to concerns raised by communities surrounding the New Bedford Harbor Superfund site, we completed a field and modeling study that concluded the harbor is the primary source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in air around the harbor. The follow-up question from residents was whether the PCBs measured in air pose a risk to their health. The US Environmental Protection Agency focuses their site-specific, risk-based decisions for site clean-up on cancers. We focused our assessment on the non-cancer effects on the thyroid based on the congener specific patterns and concentrations of PCBs measured in air near and distant to the harbor. Human and animal studies of PCB-induced effects on the thyroid provide evidence to support our analysis. Drawing from the published toxicological data, we used a Margin of Exposure (MOE) approach to derive a human-equivalent concentration in air associated with human health effects on the thyroid. Based on the MOEs calculated herein, evaluation of the MOE indicates that changes in thyroid hormone levels are possible among people living adjacent to the Harbor. Changes in thyroid hormone levels are more likely among people who live near the harbor compared to residents living in areas distant from the harbor. This risk assessment documents potential health risks associated with proximity to a marine Superfund Site using site-specific ambient air PCB congener data.

Congener-specific composition of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil-air partitioning and the associated health risks

The recent changes in the compositions of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) after their restriction for 40 years may have various effects on human health. In order to characterize the congener-specific compositions of PCBs in the soil-air process and assess the associated human health risks, soil and air samples were simultaneously collected in winter and summer at two different functional locations. Homologue patterns suggest that long-range atmospheric transport might be the major source of soil and air residues of PCBs. The net deposition from air to soil was overwhelming for most PCB congeners. Variations in the occurrence and the homologue patterns of PCBs between the soil and air interface depended on chemical volatility, soil organic matter (OM) content, ambient temperature, topographical condition and atmospheric transport. Dioxin-like PCBs accounted for 11.0–70.3% and 2.31–54.8% of total PCB residues in soil and air, respectively. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with exposure to soil and air PCBs were also estimated. Different PCB congeners showed different health effects, with the highest contribution from PCB-26. Additionally, the non-carcinogenic risk levels of PCBs were enhanced, while the carcinogenic risk levels decreased during the soil-air exchange process of PCBs with time. Our results highlight the soil-air interaction of PCBs in predicting their potential human exposure health risks.

Legacy and Emerging Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Terrestrial Compartments in the High Arctic: Sorption and Secondary Sources.

Legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and emerging perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were measured in vegetation and soil samples collected at remote lakes in the Canadian High Arctic. Field studies were carried out in 2015 and 2016 to assess concentrations of POPs, study the relevant sorbing phases, and determine whether Arctic soils were sinks or sources of legacy POPs to the atmosphere and to neighboring lakes. The patterns of legacy POPs in vegetation and soils were dominated by low molecular weight PCB congeners along with OCPs, confirming the importance of long-range atmospheric transport. Lipid and non-lipid organic matter was a key determinant of legacy POPs in Arctic vegetation. Soil organic matter was the main descriptor of hydrophobic PCBs and OCPs in soils, while soil inorganic carbon content, was an important driver of the sorption of PFASs in soils. While contaminant concentrations were low in soil and vegetation, higher PCBs and PFOS organic and inorganic carbon-normalized concentrations were found at Resolute Lake indicating the presence of local sources of contamination. Comparison of fugacities of PCBs in soil and air from Resolute Lake indicated soils as net sources of PCBs to the atmosphere.

Concentrations, Trends, and Air-Water Exchange of PCBs and Organochlorine Pesticides Derived from Passive Samplers in Lake Superior in 2011.

The largest fresh water body in North America, Lake Superior, has the potential to both accumulate and serve as a secondary source of persistent bioaccumulative toxins, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Polyethylene passive samplers (PEs) were thus simultaneously deployed at 19 sites in surface water and near surface atmosphere across Lake Superior to determine air and water concentrations and air-water gradients of 18 PCBs and 24 OCPs. PCBs in the air and water were characterized by penta- and hexachlorobiphenyls with distribution along the coast correlated with proximity to developed areas. Surface water and atmospheric concentrations were dominated by α-HCH (average 250 pg L-1 and 4.2 pg m-3, respectively), followed by HCB (average 17 pg L-1 and 89 pg m-3, respectively). Decreases in open lake concentrations of PCBs in water and air from spring to summer were consistent with ongoing volatilization from the surface layer as the main cause. Conversely, α-endosulfan was consistently deposited into the surface water of Lake Superior. Results indicated that PCBs were depleted in the surface mixed layer, implying a physical limit on evasive fluxes. This was corroborated with measurements from a vertical profile, displaying greater PCB concentrations at depth.

Ambient Air Exposure to PCBs: Regulation and Monitoring at Five Contaminated Sites in EPA Regions 1, 2, 4, and 5.

Existing regulations seek to protect the public from exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in food, water, and soil. Exposure to PCBs in ambient air has recently been given explicit consideration in the human health risk assessments that form the basis of risk management decisions at contaminated sites. The objective of this paper is to examine how ambient air exposure to PCBs is regulated and monitored at five contaminated sites in the United States. We reviewed online accessible materials (including Environmental Protection Agency-site specific websites, data repositories, and other agency websites). Results indicate that the five sites vary in regard to the measured PCB concentrations in air, the sampling and monitoring methodologies, and the established site-specific guidelines/standards and their basis. We conclude that current practices may not adequately protect those living or working near these sites from airborne PCB exposure and that regulations should include recognition of exposure to indoor sources.

Gas/particle partitioning and particle size distribution of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in urban ambient air

Urban ambient air samples, including gas-phase (PUF), total suspended particulates (TSP), PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 airborne particle fractions were collected to evaluate gas-particle partitioning and size particle distribution of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Clausius-Clapeyron equation, regressions of logKp vs logPL and logKOA, and human respiratory risk assessment were used to evaluate local or long-distance transport sources, gas-particle partitioning sorption mechanisms, and implications for health. Total ambient air levels (gas phase+particulate phase) of TPCBs and TPCDD/Fs, were 437 and 0.07pgm−3 (median), respectively. Levels of PCDD/F in the gas phase (0.004–0.14pgm−3, range) were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those found in the particulate phase (0.02–0.34pgm−3). The concentrations of PCDD/Fs were higher in winter. In contrast, PCBs were mainly associated to the gas phase, and displayed maximum levels in warm seasons, probably due to an increase in evaporation rates, supported by significant and strong positive dependence on temperature observed for several congeners. No significant differences in PCDD/Fs and PCBs concentrations were detected between the different particle size fractions considered (TSP, PM10, PM2.5 and PM1), reflecting that these chemicals are mainly bounded to PM1. The toxic content of samples was also evaluated. Total toxicity (PUF+TSP) attributable to dl-PCBs (13.4fg-TEQ05 m−3, median) was higher than those reported for PCDD/Fs (6.26fg-TEQ05 m−3). The inhalation risk assessment concluded that the inhalation of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs pose a low cancer risk in the studied area.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in Nepalese surface soils: Spatial distribution, air-soil exchange, and soil-air partitioning

Regardless of the ban on the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) decade ago, significant measures of PCBs are still transmitted from essential sources in cities and are all inclusive ecological contaminants around the world. In this study, the concentrations of PCBs in soil, the air-soil exchange of PCBs, and the soil-air partitioning coefficient (KSA) of PCBs were investigated in four noteworthy urban areas in Nepal. Overall, the concentrations of ∑30PCBs ranged from 10 to 59.4ng/g dry weight; dw (mean 12.2ng/g ±11.2ng/g dw). The hexa-CBs (22–31%) was most dominant among several PCB-homologues, followed by tetra-CBs (20–29%), hepta-CBs (12–21%), penta-CBs (15–17%) and tri-CBs (9–19%). The sources of elevated level of PCBs discharge in Nepalese soil was identified as emission from transformer oil, lubricants, breaker oil, cutting oil and paints, and cable insulation. Slightly strong correlation of PCBs with TOC than BC demonstrated that amorphous organic matter (AOM) assumes a more critical part in holding of PCBs than BC in Nepalese soil. The fugacity fraction (ff) results indicated the soil being the source of PCB in air through volatilization and net transport from soil to air. The soil-air partitioning coefficient study suggests the absorption by soil organic matter control soil-air partitioning of PCBs. Slightly weak but positive correlation of measured Log KSA with Log KOA (R2 = 0.483) and Log KBC-A (R2 = 0.438) suggests that both Log KOA and Log KBC-A can predict soil-air partitioning to lesser extent for PCBs.

Spatial variation of PAHs and PCBs in coastal air, seawater, and sediments in a heavily industrialized region

Concurrent coastal seawater (n=22), sediment (n=22), and atmospheric samples (n=10) were collected in the Aliaga industrial region, Turkey, to explore the spatial variation, sources, and air-seawater exchange of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Seawater Σ16PAH concentrations (particle+dissolved) ranged between 5107 and 294,624pgL-1, while Σ41PCB concentrations were in the range of 880-50,829pgL-1. Levels in sediments were highly variable ranging between 35.5-49,682 and 2.7-2450μgkg-1 in dry weight for Σ16PAHs and Σ41PCBs, respectively. Atmospheric concentrations varied between 1791-274,974 and 104-20,083pgm-3 for Σ16PAHs and Σ41PCBs, respectively. Sediment organic matter (OM) content and levels of Σ16PAHs and Σ41PCBs correlated weakly (r 2=0.19-0.23, p<0.05) suggesting that the spatial variations of PAHs and PCBs were mainly affected by local sources rather than their sorption to OM. The geographical distribution of PAH and PCB concentrations in air, seawater, and sediment and factor analysis on the sediment levels pointed out that the major sources in the region are steel plants, petroleum refinery, petrochemical complex, ship breaking, loading/unloading activities at the ports, vehicular emissions, and fossil fuel combustion emissions. The direction of the air-seawater exchange was also explored by estimating seawater fugacity fractions of PAHs and PCBs. For PAHs, the number of cases implying deposition (43.0%) and volatilization (39.5%) was similar, while for PCBs, the number of cases implying volatilization (60.4%) was much higher compared to deposition (21.6%). Fugacity fractions were generally <0.36 (deposition) at the sites close to industrial and ship breaking activities where the highest seawater and sediment levels were measured, implying that atmospheric deposition is an important mechanism affecting seawater and sediment PAH and PCB levels.

Air and Soil Concentrations and Source Identification of Ambient Polychlorinated Biphenyls in the Northeastern Mediterranean Region

Ambient air and soil samples were taken in Istanbul between November 2012 and May 2013 in order to determine polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations. A high volume air sampler was operated to collect air samples. Soil samples were taken from top of bare land. Air PCB concentrations ranged from 201 to 705 pg m−3 with an average of 360 pg m−3. The dry weight soil PCB concentrations varied from 3.4 to 13.6 ng g−1 with an average of 8.3 ng g−1. The fate of PCBs was investigated through gas/particle partitioning. Further investigation was made between soil and air phases by fugacity fractions. Effect of wind direction was revealed by conditional probability function (CPF). Potential source contribution function was employed to determine the likely distant PCB sources. Di‐chlorinated biphenyls (Di‐CBs) tended to accumulate in soil while 5‐, 7‐, and 8‐CBs volatilized from the soil. According to CPF, 3‐CBs were likely to be released from the Marmara Sea. Additionally, SW wind direction was dominant for Σ‐, 2‐, 5‐, 6‐, 7‐CBs, and concentration of 9‐CBs increased for the winds of NW, N, NE directions. Previously reported hot‐spot zones for iron‐steel manufacturing industry were identified to contribute to PCBs in air masses, arriving from SW direction. Additional contribution was detected when air masses arrived from the north. These sources were from the south of the Ukraine.

Release of Airborne Polychlorinated Biphenyls from New Bedford Harbor Results in Elevated Concentrations in the Surrounding Air.

Qualitatively and quantitatively, we have demonstrated that airborne polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in the air surrounding New Bedford Harbor (NBH) are caused by its water PCB emissions. We measured airborne PCBs at 18 homes and businesses near NBH in 2015, with values ranging from 0.4 to 38 ng m–3, with a very strong Aroclor 1242/1016 signal that is most pronounced closest to the harbor and reproducible over three sampling rounds. Using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) water PCB data from 2015 and local meteorology, we predicted gas-phase fluxes of PCBs from 160 to 1200 μg m–2 day–1. Fluxes were used as emissions for AERMOD, a widely applied U.S. EPA atmospheric dispersion model, to predict airborne PCB concentrations. The AERMOD predictions were within a factor of 2 of the field measurements. PCB emission from NBH (110 kg year–1, average 2015) is the largest reported source of airborne PCBs from natural waters in North America, and the source of high ambient air PCB concentrations in locations close to NBH. It is likely that NBH has been an important source of airborne PCBs since it was contaminated with Aroclors more than 60 years ago.
