Assessing the Interrelationship Between Microplastics and Polychlorinated Biphenyls Contamination in Chinese Mangrove Sediment

Mangrove ecosystems, critical intertidal zones at the land–ocean interface, are increasingly recognized for their role in microplastic (MP) pollution dynamics. Despite extensive research on the interaction of MPs with various chemical contaminants, the specific contamination levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) associated with MPs in mangroves remain poorly understood. In this study, we quantified the concentrations of PCBs on MPs extracted from representative mangrove sediment samples across China, revealing values ranging from 9.80 to 13.91 ng/g. In contrast, PCB concentrations in sediment samples were found to vary between 25.67 and 69.85 ng/g. Our findings indicate a consistent level of PCB contamination on MPs across different sites, although these levels were marginally elevated compared to those in the surrounding sediments. Notably, Penta-PCBs were detected with the highest frequency across all samples analyzed. This study provides crucial insights into the occurrence and distribution of PCBs on MPs within the mangrove ecosystem, highlighting their significance in environmental contamination assessments.

Spatial patterns, source apportionment, and risk assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the surface sediments of eastern China lakes along a latitudinal gradient: Insights guided by full-congener analysis

Understanding the occurrence, sources, and ecological risks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are universal persistent organic pollutants, is critical for improving the sustainability and ecological safety of lake systems. Herein, to determine PCB contamination levels and formulate control strategies in lake sediments, 210 sediment samples were collected from 21 lakes along a latitudinal gradient (18–45°N, ∼3000 km) across eastern China and were analyzed for all 209 PCB congeners. The results showed that the total PCB concentration varied greatly from 0.26 to 163.82 ng/g dry weight and exhibited a latitudinal trend of central > north/south. Spatial variations were affected mainly by the organic carbon fraction and local population density. Most lakes had similar PCB profiles, with lower chlorinated PCBs dominating. Notably, non-Aroclor PCB 11 was the most abundant congener. Moreover, unintentionally produced PCBs (UP-PCBs) accounted for ∼31 % of all PCBs. These findings highlight that the significance of UP-PCBs has been overlooked in past studies and that full-congener analysis is necessary for future monitoring. According to the ecological risk assessment of PCBs, zero to moderate risk existed in lake sediments. Therefore, effective strategies are needed to mitigate the impact of PCBs (especially UP-PCBs) from multiple sources on lakes.

Chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons like polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/F) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) are omnipresent in the environment due to historic production, use, and (unintended) release. Nowadays, their emission and maximum concentration in environmental compartments is strictly regulated. During biochar production, PCDD/F and PCB may be formed and retained on the solid pyrolysis product. Industrial biochars certified, e.g., under the European Biochar Certificate (EBC), exhibit concentrations that were always well below threshold values for soil application and even animal feed. However, this has not been sufficiently tested for chlorine (Cl) rich organic material such as marine biomass or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) contaminated feedstock. Here, we analyzed PCDD/F and PCB contamination in biochars produced at different temperatures from different biomasses with comparatively high Cl contents in the range from 0.2 % to 3.8 % (w/w, seagrass, two types of saltwater macroalgae, tobacco stalks, and PVC contaminated wood). All of the biochars produced showed PCDD/F and PCB contents well below the applicable threshold values given by the EBC (< 20 ng TEQ kg−1 for PCDD/F and < 2×105 ng kg−1 for PCB). The EBC thresholds were undershot by a minimum of factor 1.5 for PCDD/F (mostly factor 20) and by a minimum of factor 90 for PCB. Between 1 and 27 ppb of feedstock Cl were transformed to Cl bound in PCDD/F and PCB in the biochars. No consistent correlation between biomass Cl contents and contents of PCDD/F and PCB were found but higher Cl contents in the feedstock led to a more diverse PCDD/F congener pattern in the biochars. Pyrolysis of PVC-amended wood resulted in consistently higher contamination of PCDD/F and PCB in the biochars compared to pyrolysis of the other biomasses, potentially due to differences in Cl speciation in the feedstocks i.e., Cl in PVC is already covalently bound to an organic carbon backbone. A high contamination in PCDD/F and PCB in biochar was intentionally triggered by separation of pyrogas and biochar in the reactor at < 300 °C to promote condensation of contaminants on the solid product. Between 20 % and 80 % of feedstock Cl was released via the pyrogas, i.e., neutralization of HCl in burnt pyrogas might be necessary when pyrolyzing Cl-rich feedstock in industrial biochar production. Our results indicate that biochars produced from Cl-rich feedstocks with proper biochar production process control are conform with European certification guidelines for PCDD/F and PCB contamination. The results open the opportunity to exploit and valorize so far non-used marine or otherwise Cl enriched biomasses for the production of biochar and carbon sinks.

Bimetallic catalyst system for the degradation of PCBs in sediments

In this paper, we report the successful application of a patent-pending reduced bimetallic nanoparticle catalytic system developed for the remediation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated sediment and aquatic media. The formation of bimetallic nanoparticles associated with the granular activated carbon (GAC) were confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the presence of the bimetallic matrix in reduced, albeit mixed, states. In the degradation studies, the bimetallic nanoparticles were deposited on a GAC substrate and utilized to treat both a surrogate PCB, 2-Chlorobiphenyl (2-CBP) in water and contaminated bottom-river sediments collected from a site with mixed-congener PCB contamination. The degradation studies on non-degassed water contaminated with 2-CBP at room temperature showed a high yield of 2-CBP degradation to biphenyl and phenol. Results from the bottom-river sediments contaminated with PCBs (tested in laboratory environment at ambient temperature and atmospheric conditions, not degassed) have indicated the bimetallic catalyst has great promise for remedial application in sediment and aquatic media. Results illustrate that this newly-developed and patent-pending catalytic system degrades PCBs through stepwise dichlorination, with expected byproducts such as biphenyl and phenol leading to mineralization of the PCBs.

The Impact of Polychlorinated Biphenyls on the Development of Zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of 209 highly stable molecules that were used extensively in industry. Although their commercial use ceased in 1979, they are still present in many aquatic ecosystems due to improper disposal, oceanic currents, atmospheric deposition, and hydrophobic nature. PCBs pose a significant and ongoing threat to the development and sustainability of aquatic organisms. In areas with PCB exposure high mortality rates of organisms inhabiting them are still seen today, posing a significant threat to local species. Zebrafish were exposed to a standard PCB mixture (Aroclor 1254) for the first 5 days post fertilization, as there is a gap in knowledge during this important developmental period for fish (i.e., organization of the body). This PCB mixture was formally available commercially and has a high prevalence in PCB-contaminated sites. We tested for the effects of PCB dosage (control (embryo water only; 0 mg/L), methanol (solvent control; 0 mg/L); PCB 1 (0.125 mg/L), PCB 2 (0.25 mg/L), PCB 3 (0.35 mg/L), and PCB 4 (0.40 mg/L)) on zebrafish survival, rate of metamorphosis, feeding efficiency, and growth. We found significant, dose-dependent effects of PCB exposure on mortality, feeding efficiency, and growth, but no clear effect of PCBs on the rate of zebrafish metamorphosis. We identified a concentration in which there were no observable effects (NOEC), PCB concentration above the NOEC had a significant impact on life-critical processes. This can further inform local management decisions in environments experiencing PCB contamination.

Evaluating Household Hazardous Waste Generation, Composition, and Health Risks in an Urban Municipality

This study aimed to assess the generation rate and composition of household hazardous waste (HHW) in Nakhon Si Thammarat Municipality, Thailand. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data on HHW generation and disposal practices from households in the municipality. Soil samples were collected and analyzed for heavy metals (cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, and lead) and PCBs contamination. The potential health risks from ingestion exposure associated with heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contamination in the soil were evaluated. The result revealed that in 2023, the HHW generation rate was 11.95 kg/household/year, with the highest percentages occurring of electronic waste (17.40%), fluorescent lamps (16.98%), spray cans (12.38%), cleaning products (11.30%), and engine oil and lubricant oil products (9.87%). The majority of residents (92.90%) disposed of hazardous waste and general waste together in public waste containers. However, the health risk assessment indicated that the levels of heavy metals and PCBs in the soil were within the safe acceptable range for residents, with a total lifetime cancer risk from ingestion exposure of less than 1E-06 for both adults and children. The findings highlight the need for improved waste separation practices and the implementation of effective hazardous waste management strategies to minimize potential health risks and environmental impacts. This study serves as a basis for developing targeted interventions and policies to enhance household hazardous waste management in the municipalities and similar urban areas in Thailand. ABSTRACT Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), including all 209 congeners, are designated as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) due to their high toxicity and bioaccumulation in human bodies and the ecosystem. The need for PCB remediation still remains long after their production ban. In this study, a catalytic hydro-dechlorination (HDC) method was employed to dechlorinate 2,4,4’-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB 28), a congener found ubiquitously in multiple environmental media. The HDC of PCB 28 was experimentally studied at mild temperatures viz. ~20, 50, and ~77°C and atmospheric pressure. Et3N (triethylamine) was added as a co-catalyst. The dechlorination rates increased with temperature as well as Et3N dosage, and the HDC pathway was hypothesized based on the product and intermediates observed. The less chlorinated intermediates suggested that the position of the chlorine strongly impacted HDC rates, and the preference of HDC at para positions can be orders of magnitudes higher than the ortho. The activation energy was estimated in the range of 12.4–13.9 kJ/mole, indicating a diffusion-controlled HDC system. Implications: The remediation need for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) still remains long after their production ban around the world. The development of low-cost methods is highly desirable, especially for developing countries, in response to the Stockholm Convention. In this study, the dechorination of a ubiquitously present PCB congener was studied using a catalytic hydro-dechlorination (HDC) method in low temperatures up to ~77°C and was able to achieve near 100% dechlorination in 6 hr. Results indicated that the HDC process can be performed under mild temperatures and atmospheric conditions and can be a potential solution to real world PCB contamination issues.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in mussels, small pelagic fish, tuna, turtles, and dolphins from the Croatian Adriatic Sea waters: an overview of the last two decades of monitoring.

This review summarises our two decades of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) monitoring in different marine organisms along the eastern Adriatic Sea. The aim was to gain an insight into the trends of PCB distribution in order to evaluate the effectiveness of past and current legislation and suggest further action. Here we mainly focus on PCB levels in wild and farmed Mediterranean mussels, wild and farmed bluefin tuna, loggerhead sea turtles, common bottlenose dolphins, and small pelagic fish. The use of artificial intelligence and advanced statistics enabled an insight into the influence of various variables on the uptake of PCBs in the investigated organisms as well as into their mutual dependence. Our findings suggest that PCBs in small pelagic fish and mussels reflect global pollution and that high levels in dolphins and wild tuna tissues raise particular concern, as they confirm their biomagnification up the food chain. Therefore, the ongoing PCB monitoring should focus on predatory species in particular to help us better understand PCB contamination in marine ecosystems in our efforts to protect the environment and human health.

Analysis and modelling of profiles to understand fractionation processes for contaminations with polychlorinated biphenyls observed in fish

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) both continue to spread into the environment and to bioaccumulate from primary urban and industrial sources as well as from secondary sources such as soils and the oceans. Fractions of congeners in PCB mixtures, i.e. PCB profiles, can be used as fingerprints to trace contamination pathways from sources to sinks because PCB mixtures fractionate during transport due to congener specific phase changes and degradation. Using a statistical analysis of a total of 8584 PCB profiles with seven congeners (CB28, CB52, CB101, CB118, CB138, CB153, CB180) for contaminated fish from two international datasets as well as a modelling of profiles, two major fractionation processes related to distinct contamination pathways were identified: (1) A relative enrichment of lighter congeners (CB28, CB52, CB101) in seawater fish due to a predominantly atmospheric transport, whereas freshwater and some coastal fish had higher fractions of heavier congeners (CB138, CB153) because those were mainly contaminated by particle-sorbed PCB from surface runoff. (2) A temperature driven fractionation tended to affect congeners with a medium molecular weight (CB118) as well as the heaviest congeners (CB180), a fractionation process which was conceptually associated with transport of PCB from secondary sources. Specifically, medium chlorinated PCB is sufficiently volatile and persistent for a preferred transport into cooler waters. In warmer climates, only the highest chlorinated congeners are persistent enough to ultimately accumulate in fish. Our analysis and modelling provide a starting point for the development of systems to trace – better than before - sources of PCB contaminations observed in fish.

Transformation of hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls by bacterial 2-hydroxybiphenyl 3-monooxygenase

Monohydroxylated PCBs (OH-PCBs) are an (eco)toxicologically significant group of compounds, as they arise from the oxidation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and, at the same time, may exert even more severe toxic effects than their parent PCB molecules. Despite having been widely detected in environmental samples, plants, and animals, information on the fate of OH-PCBs in the environment is scarce, including on the enzymatic machinery behind their degradation. To date, only a few bacterial taxa capable of OH-PCB transformation have been reported. In this study, we aimed to obtain a deeper insight into the transformation of OH-PCBs in soil bacteria and isolated a Pseudomonas sp. strain P1B16 based on its ability to use o-phenylphenol (2-PP) which, when exposed to the Delor 103-derived OH-PCB mixture, depleted a wide spectrum of mono-, di, and trichlorinated OH-PCBs. In the P1B16 genome, a region designated as hbp was identified, which bears a set of putative genes involved in the transformation of OH-PCBs, namely hbpA encoding for a putative flavin-dependent 2-hydroxybiphenyl monooxygenase, hbpC (2,3-dihydroxybiphenyl-1,2-dioxygenase), hbpD (2-hydroxy-6-oxo-6-phenylhexa-2,4-dienoate hydrolase), and the transcriptional activator-encoding gene hbpR. The hbpA coding sequence was heterologously expressed, purified, and its substrate specificity was investigated towards the Delor 103-derived OH-PCB mixture, individual OH-PCBs, and multiple (chlorinated) phenolics. Apart from 2-PP and 2-chlorophenol, HbpA was also demonstrated to transform a range of OH-PCBs, including a 3-hydroxy-2,2′,4′,5,5′-pentachlorobiphenyl. Importantly, this is the first direct evidence of HbpA homologs being involved in the degradation of OH-PCBs. Moreover, using a P1B16-based biosensor strain, the specific induction of hbp genes by 2-PP, 3-phenylphenol, 4-phenylphenol, and the OH-PCB mixture was demonstrated. This study provides direct evidence on the specific enzymatic machinery responsible for the transformation of OH-PCBs in bacteria, with many implications in ecotoxicology, environmental restoration, and microbial ecology in habitats burdened with PCB contamination.

Assessing Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) Contamination in Indoor Dust among University Students in Ilorin, Nigeria

Background: This study aimed to assess the contamination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in indoor dust among university students in Ilorin, Nigeria. Methods: One hundred (100) indoor dust samples were collected from different locations within university hostels. Two Universities in Ilorin were sampled for the study; the Univerisity of Ilorin and Al-Hikmah University. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) was employed to analyze and identify fourteen PCB congeners. Results: The results revealed that university students were exposed to low levels of PCB contamination in indoor dust. The concentrations of individual PCB congeners ranged from 4.993ng/g to 37.701ng/g. Notably, PCB-52 and PCB-118 were the predominant congeners, with mean concentrations of 37.701ng/g and 30.928ng/g. Conversely, PCB-44 exhibited the lowest occurrence, with a mean concentration of 4.993ng/g. The study found positive correlations among specific PCB congeners, suggesting familiar sources and environmental behaviors. However, no significant correlations were found between residential characteristics and measured PCB levels. Conclusion: The results emphasize the need for further research to minimize PCB contamination in indoor environments and protect human health. It is recommended that PCB levels be monitored in indoor environments and enforce strong regulations to control PCB production, use, and disposal.

Bedload sediment transport model for revealing the multi-year trend of polychlorinated biphenyl contamination in the river sediment (Kupa, Croatia).

This article investigated the multi-year polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) burden of the sediment collected along the Kupa River flow in Croatia using the bedload sediment transport model. Kupa, as the natural border between Croatia and Slovenia, belongs to the water system Krupa (Slovenia) → Lahinja (Slovenia) → Kupa (Croatia) → Sava → Danube → Black Sea. From 1962 to 1985, the total quantity of waste calculated for pure PCBs, released by a capacitor manufacturer into the environment within various locations of the Krupa River in Slovenia, was 70 tons. Krupa River (Slovenia) has become one of the most PCB-polluted rivers in Europe, and consequently, PCBs have been detected in the Kupa River (Croatia). Model application revealed that contamination of the Kupa River (Croatia) started significantly earlier than 1983, when a high concentration of PCB was detected for the first time in the Krupa River (Slovenia), with probably significantly higher sediment concentrations at the upstream boundary of the Kupa. A slow concentration changes and PCB accumulation in the sediment should be expected downstream compared to the upstream boundary, governed mainly by high flow events. The PCBs in sediments from 2020/2021 are markedly different after the Lahinja confluence with Kupa (0.2-0.6μgkg-1 vs. 1.4-34.3μgkg-1). Measurements of PCBs in Kupa sediment suggest that the intake of PCB has not yet been completely stopped, which should be confirmed by detailed monitoring in the future. The contamination situation observed in the Kupa River represents an excellent example of the persistency of PCBs in the environment.

Short-chain fatty acids facilitated long-term dechlorination of PCBs in Taihu Lake sediment microcosms: Evidence from PCB congener and microbial community analyses

Microbial reductive dechlorination hosts great promise as an in situ bioremediation strategy for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contamination. However, the slow dechlorination in sediments limits natural attenuation. Short-chain fatty acids, as preferred carbon sources and electron donors for dechlorinating microorganisms, might stimulate PCB dechlorination. Herein, two sets of short-chain fatty acids, sole acetate and a fatty acid mixture (acetate, propionate, and butyrate), were amended periodically into Taihu Lake (China) sediment microcosms containing nine PCB congeners (PCB5, 12, 64, 71, 105, 114, 149, 153, and 170) after 24 weeks of incubation. Short-chain fatty acids facilitated the long-term PCB dechlorination and the promoting effect of the fatty acid mixture compared favorably with that of sole acetate. By the end of 108 weeks, the total PCB mass concentrations in acetate amended and fatty acid mixture amended microcosms significantly declined by 7.6% and 10.3% compared with non-amended microcosms (P < 0.05), respectively. Short-chain fatty acids selectively favored the removal of flanked meta and single-flanked para chlorines. Notably, a rare ortho dechlorination pathway, PCB25 (24-3-CB) to PCB13 (3-4-CB), was enhanced. Supplementary fatty acids significantly increased reductive dehalogenases (RDase) gene pcbA5 instead of improving the growth of Dehalococcoides. These findings highlight the merits of low cost short-chain fatty acids on in situ biostimulation in treating PCBs contamination.

Growth Performance of Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819 under an Innovative Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture System (IMTA) in the Mar Grande of Taranto (Mediterranean Sea, Italy)

The cultivation of the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819, has been tested in an innovative Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture system (IMTA) in the Mar Grande of Taranto, as part of the EU-funded Remedialife project. This farming method could solve several problems including the low growth rate in mesotrophic environments while reducing the environmental impact of fish mariculture. Three productive cycles have been carried out. The first (2018–2019, traditional experiment) was conducted in three long lines around six cages of the fish farm in order to evaluate total mussel production under the innovative IMTA system and quality for human consumption by analyzing the concentration of culturable heterotrophic bacteria, total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. in mussel tissues. In addition, 17 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including 16 EPA priority compounds and seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are indicators of PCB contamination in the environment, were analyzed using gas chromatography in conjunction with a mass spectrometer. The second cycle (2020–2021, horizontal distance experiment) aimed to test the influence of fish cages on mussel growth by placing mussels near and far from the fish cages. The third cycle (2021–2022, vertical distance experiment) aimed to overcome the phenomenon of “heat waves” that can occur in the Mar Grande of Taranto during summer by testing the growth performance of mussels at two different depths (1 and 12 m). The following parameters were measured: Shell Length, L (mm); Shell Dry Weight, SDW (g); Flesh Dry Weight, FDW (g); Condition Index, IC = FDW/SDW. The results showed that the best growth performance was obtained near the fish cages and at a depth of 12 m. Moreover, the indicators of microbial contamination and concentrations of chemical compounds analyzed in mussel tissues cultured under the innovative IMTA system were in compliance with the reference values of European regulations.

Safety Evaluation and Probabilistic Health Risk Assessment of Cow Milk Produced in Northern Italy According to Dioxins and PCBs Contamination Levels.

Contamination levels of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were monitored over 2018-2021 in 214 bovine milk samples from farms located in two regions in northern Italy (Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna). The average concentrations of the sum of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs (0.78 ± 0.55 pg TEQ/g fat) and six non-dioxin-like PCBs (6.55 ± 2.24 ng/g fat) were largely below the maximum, and action limits established at European level, confirming a decreasing trend observed both locally and across Europe in recent years. The impact of contamination levels on chronic dietary exposure of the Italian population to dioxins and PCBs was found to be highly variable based on the type of cow milk (skimmed, semi-skimmed, or whole-fat milk) and the population age group considered. Indeed, a first-tier screening of the potential exposure via determinist methods allowed for the identification of the youngest population as the group with the worst risk profile. The refinement of exposure assessment via Monte Carlo probabilistic methods suggested that, at the less pessimistic middle-bound simulation scenario, infants, toddlers, and children consuming whole cow milk may be exposed to dioxins and PCBs levels above the toxicological reference values with a probability of 76, 56, and 22%, respectively.

Trends of legacy and emerging organic contaminants in a sediment core from Cienfuegos Bay, Cuba, from 1990 to 2015

Legacy and emerging organic pollutants pose an ever-expanding challenge for the marine environment. This study analysed a dated sediment core from Cienfuegos Bay, Cuba, to assess the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), alternative halogenated flame retardants (aHFRs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), and phthalates (PAEs) from 1990 to 2015. The results evidence the continuing presence of historical regulated contaminants (PCBs, OCPs, and PBDEs) in the southern basin of Cienfuegos Bay. PCB contamination declined since 2007, likely in response to the gradual global phasing out of PCB containing materials. There have been relatively consistent low accumulation rates for OCPs and PBDEs at this location (in 2015 approximately 1.9 and 0.26ng/cm2/year, respectively, with 2.8ng/cm2/year for Σ6PCBs), with indications of recent local DDT use in response to public health emergencies. In contrast, sharp increases are observed between 2012 and 2015 for the contaminants of emerging concern (PAEs, OPEs, and aHFRs), and in the case of two PAEs (DEHP and DnBP) the concentrations were above the established environmental effect limits for sediment dwelling organisms. These increasing trends reflect the growing global usage of both alternative flame retardants and plasticizer additives. Local drivers for these trends include nearby industrial sources such as a plastic recycling plant, multiple urban waste outfalls, and a cement factory. The limited capacity for solid waste management may also contribute to the high concentrations of emerging contaminants, especially plastic additives. For the most recent year (2015), the accumulation rates for Σ17aHFRs, Σ19PAEs, and Σ17OPEs into sediment at this location were estimated to be 10, 46 000, and 750ng/cm2/year, respectively. This data provides an initial survey of emerging organic contaminants within this understudied region of the world. The increasing temporal trends observed for aHFRs, OPEs, and PAEs highlights the need for further research concerning the rapid influx of these emerging contaminants.

PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in Soil around an Industrial Park in Northwest China: Levels, Source Apportionment, and Human Health Risk.

The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were determined in soil samples collected around an industrial park in Northwest China, to investigate the potential impacts of park emissions on the surrounding environment. The total concentration ranges of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in the soil samples were in 13.2-1240, 141-832, and 3.60-156 pg/g, respectively. The spatial distribution and congener patterns of PCBs, PCNs, and PCCD/Fs indicated that there might be multiple contamination sources in the study area, so source apportionments of PCBs, PCNs, and PCCD/Fs were performed by a positive matrix factorization model based on the concentrations of all target congeners together. The results revealed that these highly chlorinated congeners (CB-209, CN-75, and OCDF) might be derived from phthalocyanine pigments, the legacy of Halowax 1051 and 2,4-D products, which together contributed nearly half of the total concentration of target compounds (44.5%). In addition to highly chlorinated congeners, the local industrial thermal processes were mainly responsible for the contamination of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in the surrounding soil. The total carcinogenic risk of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in a few soil samples (0.22 × 10-6, 0.32 × 10-6, and 0.40 × 10-6) approached the threshold of potential carcinogenic risk (1.0 × 10-6). Since these pollutants can continuously accumulate in the soil, the contamination of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in surrounding soil deserves continuous attention.

The derivation of soil generic assessment criteria for polychlorinated biphenyls under the agricultural land scenario in Pearl and Yangtze River Delta regions, China

The agricultural soils in China are suffered from serious polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contamination, however, the valid management standards for farmland are absent to efficiently control the health risks of PCBs exposure. This study analyzed the contamination characteristics and main composition of PCBs in agricultural soils of the southeastern China from the published literature over the past 20 years, and derived the regional generic assessment criteria (GAC) using an exposure modelling approach for individual and total PCBs (∑PCBs) via multiple exposure pathways such as ingestion of soil and dust, consumption of vegetables, dermal contact with soil and dust, ingestion of soil attached to vegetables, and inhalation of soil vapour and soil-derived dust outdoors under the agricultural land scenario. It is identified that the averaged ∑PCBs concentration of 80.03 ng g−1 under the 95 % lower confidence limit with an unacceptable health risk of 4.8 × 10−6 has significantly exceeded the integrated generic assessment criteria (expressed as GACint) of 16.5 ng g−1. Accordingly, the exposure pathways from the consumption of agricultural produces and indirect ingestion of soil attached to vegetables contributed up to 62 %–88 % of the total exposure, followed by 11 %–33 % of the soil ingestion and 2 %–6 % of dermal contact. The derived GACint for ∑PCBs is extremely valuable to effectively assess and manage the PCBs contamination in agricultural soils of China.
