Effect of Different Micronutrients on Economics of Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica) cv. Green Magic under Polyhouse Condition

A field experiment was conducted to study of “Impact of foliar spray of micronutrients on growth, yield and quality of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) under polyhouse condition” during the Rabi 2020-21 season under Department of Vegetable Science at the “Center of Excellence on Protected Cultivation and Precision Farming”, IGKV, Raipur (C.G.). The experiment consisting of 10 treatments viz., copper sulphate @ 0.20%, copper sulphate @ 0.40%, copper sulphate @ 0.60%, boric acid @ 0.20%, boric acid @ 0.40%, boric acid @ 0.60%, zinc sulphate @ 0.20%, zinc sulphate @ 0.40% and zinc sulphate @ 0.60%. Experiment was carried out with completely randomized design with ten treatments and three replications. Economic study showed that highest cost of cultivation (180,735 Rs/ha) with T3-copper sulphate @ 0.60% while maximum gross income (471,720 Rs/ha), net income (292,325 Rs/ha) and B:C ratio (2.62) was observed with T5- boric acid @ 0.40%.

A synergic and compatible microbial-based consortium for biocontrol of Fusarium wilt of tomato

Bioconsortia, based on Chaetomium globosum (isolate CgCG-2), Pseudomonas putida (PpTS-1), Bacillus subtilis (BsS2BC-1), and Trichoderma harzianum (ThS17TH), were designed to develop eco-friendly alternatives for biocontrol of vascular wilt of tomato caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol). In vitro compatibilities of microbes in these consortia were assessed for growth, antagonism, and biocontrol-related gene expression. In these bioassays, the biocontrol isolates had positive interactions for the tested parameters. In pot experiments, seed and soil applications of culture suspensions of five different isolate mixtures were assessed, in comparisons with individual isolates, for efficacy in vascular wilt control after challenge inoculations with Fol under polyhouse conditions. Compared to experimental controls, the biocontrol isolate mixtures reduced vascular wilt incidence and promoted plant growth. PpTS-1 + CgCG-2 + ThS17TH was the most effective microbial consortium, giving 71% reduction of Fusarium wilt incidence compared to non-treated controls. This reduced incidence increased plant growth by 135%. Upregulation of genes encoding for allene oxide cyclase, pathogenesis-related proteins 3, and 5, and β-1,3-glucanase in tomato plants indicated that the reduction in vascular wilt by the consortia could be partly plant-mediated. This study provides new insights into the development of microbial-based consortia for the biocontrol of vascular wilt in tomato.

Morpho-agronomic Characterization of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) Germplasm for Yield and Yield-associated Traits

Nepal possesses a rich diversity of cucumber landraces and their wild relatives. The first step towards harnessing the potential of these landraces in crop improvement programs is to identify the amount of genetic variation present among them. This research aimed to evaluate 18 cucumber accessions collected from different regions of Nepal and assess their agro-morphological variation in terms of yield and yield-associated traits under polyhouse condition. A research trial was conducted using Randomized Complete Block Design with two replicates at the National Agriculture Genetic Resources Centre (NAGRC), Khumaltar in 2019. The accessions were characterized using various qualitative and quantitative descriptors, with six focusing on traits related to the fruits of the plant and three on phenology and morphology. The results revealed significant variations among the genotypes for all studied traits. Bhaktapur Local was an excellent genotype for recording yield and associated traits, like fruit dimension, number of fruits per plant and yield per plant, making it the most promising genotype, however, Genebank accessions, such as NGRC08671, NGRC07716 and NGRC08668 could be excellent choices for yield associated traits. Correlation analysis indicated a positive relationship between yield and fruit length, fruit width, and total number of fruits per plant, while vine length was positively correlated with the total number of fruits produced per plant. This study identified several genotypes with desirable traits for yield and yield-associated characteristics, which could be valuable in the development of high-yielding cucumber varieties with superior morphological and agronomic traits in the future.

Dissipation kinetics and health risk assessment of certain insecticides applied in/on tomato under open field and poly-house conditions

In this study, the dissipation kinetics and health risk assessment of different insecticides in tomato under open field and poly-house conditions were investigated. A total of four insecticides, namely Chlorantraniprole 18.5 SC @ 30 g a.i ha−1, Flubendiamide 20% WG @ 48.0 g a.i ha−1, Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 60.0 g a.i ha−1, and Thiamethoxam 25% WG @ 50.0 g a.i ha−1, were applied on tomato at the 50% flowering stage, followed by 10 days after the first spray. Prior to actual sample analysis, QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) based extraction methodology for the chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide, indoxacarb and thiamethoxam in tomato were verified and quantified on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) in terms of linearity, sensitivity (detection limits), accuracy (% recovery) and precision (% RSD). The DT50 value of chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide, indoxacarb and thiamethoxam in tomato under open field condition was 1.95, 2.25, 2.37 and 3.98, respectively and under poly house condition it was 3.05, 5.02, 2.68 and 4.82, respectively. Similarly, the safe waiting period of chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide, indoxacarb and thiamethoxam in tomato under open field condition was 1.05, 0.83, 2.96 and 3.23, respectively and under poly house condition it was 2.02, 4.93, 4.09 and 7.33, respectively. Further, health risk assessment was evaluated and observed no risk for Indian consumers due to application of studied insecticides (RQ < 1) under open field and poly-house conditions.

Seedling Vigor of Fuji Apple (Malus Domestica Var. Fuji) on Different Soil Media

The fuji apple seedling is one of the varieties of an apple that can withstand tropical conditions. In the Philippines, no apple production despite of high consumption and demand. This study aimed to determine the seedling vigor of fuji apple on different soil pot mixes under polyhouse conditions. The study was conducted at the Plant Science Area, College of Agriculture, Mindanao State University Main Campus, Marawi City for 1 month and 17 days duration. The treatments were: Garden soil + sand (GS) a ratio of 1:1 (control); Bokashi (BK) a fermented organic matter; Cocopeat + garden soil + sand (CPGS) a ratio of 1:1:1; Vermicast + garden soil + sand (VCGS) a ratio of 1:1:1; and Rice hull + vermicast + garden soil + sand (RVGS) a ratio of 1:1:1:1. The experiment was laid out using Randomized Complete Block Design with four replicates. Depending on these results, it can be suggested that treatment CPGS could be used to fuji apple seedlings in a pot under polyhouse conditions. The treatment BK showed the lowest result on all parameters. However, it is recommended to conduct a further study on the bokashi by adding soil to assess the effect on the growth and development of fuji apple seedling.

In vivo and in vitro validation of powdery mildew resistance in garden pea genotypes

Powdery mildew is one of the serious diseases of garden pea which causes a large number of yield losses. Genetic resistance is quite effective, being cost-effective and environment friendly than fungicide applications. In the present studies an initial attempt has been made to identify resistant genotypes against powdery mildew disease developed from hybridization followed by validation of the disease. The experimental material comprised of 48 genotypes that includes 44 advanced breeding lines was evaluated for powdery mildew incidence in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications at two locations under field conditions [Palampur (winter 2017–18 and 2018–19) and Kukumseri (summer 2018)] and in vitro at Palampur [detached leaf method and polyhouse conditions]. Ten lines viz., SP7, SN-1, SN-6-1, SN-7-1, SN-2, SN-5-2, SN-6-2, SN-10, SN-21 and SP-281 showed resistant reaction along with check Palam Sumool while 27 lines were identified as moderately resistant in comparison to susceptible check Azad P-1. Besides, six lines namely, SP-2, SP-5, SP-10, SP-24, SA-4 and SP-12-1 gave moderately susceptible reaction along with checks Pb-89 and Palam Priya. Only, SP-19 was categorized as susceptible. The high yielding lines SP-3, SP-6 and SP-22 showed moderately resistant reaction in both natural and artificial conditions. Validation of resistance using molecular markers revealed that neither the parental genotypes nor the progenies possess the er1 gene of JI1559. The er2 linked marker ScOPX-171700 was polymorphic between Palam Sumool and Palam Priya but the marker didn’t show polymorphism between er2 harboring line (JI2480). These results suggested that the lines showing resistance under field conditions may have some other genes or alleles for resistance and further confirmation is needed by developing mapping populations with specific gene or gene combinations.

Biological characteristics and parasitization potential of Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) on the whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a pest of greenhouse crops in north-western Indian Himalayas

BackgroundThe greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) constitutes key pests of greenhouses and field crops, which have developed pesticide resistance over the years. It has emerged as a difficult pest to manage owing to its indiscriminate exposure to higher dosages of insecticides. The use of natural enemies is environmentally safe alternative management tactic. Efficacy of Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) was determined by studying its biological characteristics on T. vaporariorum.ResultsParasitization by E. formosa was higher on fourth-instar nymphs of the greenhouse whitefly (GHWF) (37.2%), which was at par with that of third instar (36.4%), both differing significantly to the parasitization observed in second instar (19.6%). Total developmental duration of the parasitoid was longer on second instar (33.2 days) than that of fourth instar (29.9 days). Adult longevity was found significantly higher for the adults that emerged from fourth-instar nymphs of GHWF, which was at par to that of third instar and longevity of E. formosa adults was significantly higher in the absence of parasitoid host. The size of parasitoid that emerged from different instars of GHWF varied non-significantly. T. vaporariorum was reared on brinjal, cucumber, French bean, lettuce, tobacco, and tomato plants for mass production of E. formosa. Among them, French bean and tobacco were found to be the best host plants for mass production of E. formosa based on higher parasitization (37.2%). Total developmental period varied from 26.4 to 27.3 days on different host plants, the variations being non-significant. The maximum adult longevity was observed on cucumber (8.0 days) in the absence of host, and the adult size of parasitoid varied non-significantly. Results on host to parasitoid ratio of 5:1, 10:1, 20:1, 40:1 and 80:1 revealed that parasitization rate varied from 61.2 to 95.0% with maximum parasitization recorded in host–parasitoid proportion of 20:1 and minimum in 80:1. The total developmental duration varied non-significantly among all the proportions (15.1–15.4 days). Adult longevity was higher in the proportion of 40:1 (6.5 days), which was at par to the proportion of 5:1 (6.2 days), 20:1 (6.2 days), 80:1 (6.2 days) and 10:1 (6.1 days) in the absence of the host, respectively.ConclusionThis study suggests that augmentative biological control of T. vaporariorum under polyhouse conditions with E. formosa appears to be an effective strategy for the management of this economic pest.

Roses are unexcelled in their popularity as a garden flower and constitute an extremely Important floriculture crop. Investigation was therefore undertaken for the management of rose thrips under polyhouse condition. The one day after spraying of Spinosad and Dichlorvos recorded the lowest population which was significantly superior and followed by Neem oil and NSKE recorded the lowest population was observed for the study. Three days after spraying highest mortality of thrips population on three days after spraying of neem oil (59.61%), NSKE (59.79 %), Spinosad (66.35%) and Dichlorvos (65.75%) when compared all other treatments. Five days after spraying the treatment of neem oil (74.99%), NSKE (70.58), Spinosad (79.45%) and Dichlorvos (82.45%) was high mortality on thrips population was recorded, respectively.The chemical treatment of Dichlorvos and Spinosad were found superior which recorded on 44.72 per cent and 38.13 per cent of thrips mortality on one day after spraying followed by Neem oil (34.61%) and NSKE (31.63%), respectively in un opened rose buds.Population of thrips was significantly declining on chemical treatments such as Dichlorvos (52. 60 %) and Spinosad (50.00 %) followed by botanicals like neem oil (44.96%) and neem seed kernel extract (40.58%) was recorded on one day after spraying in partially opened rose flower.The impact of treatment neem oil, neem seed kernel extract, Spinosad and Dichlorvos found effective in reducing thrips population upto the extent of 41.01, 43.14, 48.71 and 50.66 per cent in one day after spraying in fully opened rose flower.

Influence of growing conditions and integrated nutrient management on yield and quality of broccoli

The present investigation was conducted at Horticultural Research Farm, B. A. College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Anand in rabi season during the two consecutive years, 2019-20 and 2020-21. In triplicate replications, the experiment was designed in a split plot which consists of twelve treatment combinations. Three main plot treatments of growing conditions [G1: Poly house, G2: Green shade net (50 % Shade net) and G3: Open condition] and four subplot treatments of integrated nutrient management reside of N1: 50% RDF(chemical fertilizer)+ 50% RDF (FYM), N2: 50% RDF (chemical fertilizer) +50% RDF(vermicompost), N3: 50% RDF (chemical fertilizer) + 50% RDF (poultry manure) and N4: Control (RDF, 100:50:50 NPK kg/ha). Growing broccoli in polyhouse conditions recorded minimum days for first harvest and maximum curd height, curd diameter, curd weight, yield (t/ha), TSS, dry matter content, and ascorbic acid. The minimum days for the first harvest and maximum curd height, curd diameter, curd weight, yield (t/ha), TSS, dry matter content, and ascorbic acid were observed with the application of 50 % RDF through chemical fertilizer +50% RDF through vermicompost. Growing broccoli in polyhouse condition with application of 50 % RDF through chemical fertilizer +50% RDF through vermicompost recorded maximum curd height, curd diameter, curd weight, and yield (t/ha).

Influence of plant growth regulators on macro propagation in different banana genotypes

In vivo macro-propagation of banana has gained its momentum as an alternative source for mass multiplication of quality planting materials following some principles like decapitation, decortication of apical meristem of corm and hardening. 6- Benzylamino purine (BAP) @ 40ppm and 60ppm and Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) @1000 ppm and 2000 ppm were used for locally grown banana genotypes viz. Bharatmani, Chini champa and Bhootmanohar to assess the response of plant growth regulators on shoot and root proliferation. The diseases free uniform corm and sterilized sawdust as uniform rooting media were used in experiment under polyhouse condition. The apical meristem of corm was scooped out with sterilized knife to make a cavity. The growth regulators BAP and IBA) were injected into the cavity of apical meristem 2 days after planting. Proliferation of primary (3.33 and 3.67) and secondary (4.0 and 4.33) buds were noticed significantly by Bharatmani and Chini champa treated with BAP @ 40 ppm and also took less time for bud proliferation.The genotype Chini Champa treated with BAP @ 40 ppm generated maximum number of plantlets per corm (14.67) while the highest number of explants (13.66) per corm after detaching was obtained by Bharatmani using BAP @ 40 ppm.

Influence of Cocopeat and Vermicompost on Growth and Yield of Cucumber

The present investigation is aimed to determine the effects of cocopeat and vermicompost on growth and yield of cucumber. Three different fertigation levels, i.e. 120% RDF, 100%RDF and 80% RDF were used as main treatments with three combination of soilless medias, i.e. 100% cocopeat, 100% vermicompost and 50% cocopeat + 50% vermicompost were used as a sub main treatments and replicated thrice with split-plot design in the year 2019 and 2020 under naturally ventilated polyhouse conditions. The results showed that treatment combination 100% RDF and 50% cocopeat + 50% vermicompost led to be optimum crop performance and highest yield. Although the highest rate of fertilizer application showed the highest nutrient content, the growth rate of the plants was not optimum among all the treatment combinations. Incorporation of fertilizer into cocopeat and vermicompost soilless growing media contributed to the maintenance of nutrient availability during the growth period, while excessive use of fertilizer did not enable to increase the yield.

Evaluation of Cherry Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme) for Yield and Quality Traits under Protected Condition of Jammu and Kashmir

The present study was conducted at experimental farm, Division of Vegetable Science and Floriculture, SKUAST, Jammu during winter 2018-19 to study the performance of cherry tomato genotypes under lowcost polyhouse condition. The study consisted of ten cherry tomato genotypes laid out in Randomized Block Design with single row plot due to lack of seeds. Three genotypes namely Punjab Kesar Cherry (3.30 kg/plant), G-12 (2.13 kg/plant) and G-16 (2.01 kg/plant) was identified for higher yield among all the genotypes. With respect to quality parameters maximum TSS was recorded in G-22 followed by G-14, lycopene content was higher in Punjab Red Cherry followed by Punjab Sona Cherry.

Micropropagation of Hoya carnosa, H. kerrii, H. parasitica, and H. longifolia using tray-based floating and stationary hydroponic systems

Hoya is a wild ornamental plant with medicinal properties that have been extensively exploited from its natural habitat, causing a reduction at an alarming rate. The current study is aiming to fabricate an affordable and simple-to-use hydroponic system for the conservation and mass production of four Hoya species (H. carnosa, H. kerrii, H. parasitica, and H. longifolia). Tray-based floating and stationary hydroponic systems consist of Hoya plants (cuttings) inserted in a thermocol sheet and suspended in MS nutrient solution. Cuttings derived from mature plants were subjected to full MS (Murashige and Skoog), 1/2 MS, 1/3 MS, and 1/4 MS nutrient media for growth optimization. Subsequently, the ½ MS nutrient medium with explants was further augmented with different concentrations (0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 µM) of auxins like 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), indole acetic acid (IAA) and IBA (2.5 µM) optimized for rooting. A combination of 1/2 MS + IBA (2.5 μM) proved to be the optimal medium for rooting in Hoya species when compared to all other treatments.Further, improvements in root number were recorded with augmentation of 25, 50, 100, 150, and 200 µM of Zinc Sulphate (ZnSO4). Half MS nutrient solution with 2.5 µM IBA and 100 μM ZnSO4 resulted a maximum of 15 roots in H. carnosa, 20 in H. parasitica, 38 in H. kerrii, and 19 in H. longifolia. The effect of 5.0 µM GA3 (Gibberellic acid) was also evaluated on bud break in rooted plants. Foliar spray of GA3 on acclimatized plants subsequently reduced the bud break time, and the highest reduction of time was observed from 21 d to 7 d in H. parasitica. Transfer of hydroponically raised plantlets was under stress during in vitro to field conditions. Stress markers (MDA, SOD, and CAT) for defense and photosynthetic pigments for better survival of hydroponically grown plants were monitored during acclimatization. MDA content was stable at 60 to 70 d while SOD and CAT activity was stabilized and influenced upon its peak on the same days under the poly-house condition in the propagated Hoya species. Photosynthetic pigments were gradually increased, and maximum values were recorded at 70 d of acclimatization. The present study proposed a reliable protocol for the conservation and mass propagation of most of the Hoya species.

The Effect of Different Concentrations of GA3 and NAA on Growth and Flowering of Asiatic Lily (Lilium × asiatica) cv. Litouwen under Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse Conditions of Prayagraj

This investigation was conducted under a naturally ventilated polyhouse, in the Department of Horticulture, SHUATS, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. In December 2020 with records taken from the month of February to month of March 2021. There were nine treatments comprising two growth regulators Gibberellic acid (GA3) (at 200, 250, 300, and 350 ppm), and Naphthalic Acetic Acid (NAA) (at 50,100,150, and 200 ppm) along with control. The whole experiment was laid out as a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications. The results revealed that among the Lilium cv. LITOUWEN, the foliar application of 250 ppm GA3 significantly increased the number of leaves per plant (66) with enhanced days to bud initiation (25.7 days). The number of bud per plant was 2.8 and stem length was 43.4cm respectively., GA3 at a concentration of 350 ppm enhanced vase life (7.9 days). and NAA at a concentration of 100 ppm enhanced the number of bulblets (3.3).

Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation on growth, mineral nutrient uptake, photosynthesis and antioxidant activities of black pepper cuttings

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are one of most important soil microorganisms that can form mycorrhizal symbiosis with most of the terrestrial plants. In the present study, the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation on root colonization, growth, nutrition, photosynthetic gas exchange and antioxidant activities of black pepper cuttings were evaluated under polyhouse conditions. The single node cuttings of black pepper were grown in the presence and absence of AM combinations for 150 days under poly house. AM inoculated plants showed significantly higher mycorrhizal root colonization (95%) and spore numbers (312/50 g of sample). The effect of AM fungi was more prominent in improving root biomass than above ground biomass. Nutrient accumulations were higher in AM inoculated plants rather than uninoculated black pepper plants. Amount of acid phosphatase and dehydrogenase activity were significantly higher in AM inoculated soils. Net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of AM colonized black pepper leaves were found to be significantly greater than uninoculated plants. The influence of AM was more prominent on poly phenol oxidase and β-glucanase activity in leaves than roots. In principal component analysis the scatter plot revealed variations of the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on growth of black pepper cuttings. Based on these results, AM inoculation at the earlier stage of plant development could improve symbiosis, and increased plant growth in the nursery which may improve the performance after planting in the field.

Raising vegetable seedlings in pro trays is becoming an innovative approach to produce quality seedlings in horticulture. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of AMF Funneliformis mosseae and K solubilizing bacterium Bacillus mucilaginosus singly and together in enhancing the growth of tomato seedlings raised in pro trays under polyhouse conditions. Different growth parameters like shoot and root length, total seedling length, stem diameter, dry weight of seedlings, biovolume index, plant strength, vigourindex, macro and micro nutrientuptake, mycorrhizal root colonization and the population of B. mucilaginosus in the root zone soil were monitored. Significantly higher shoot length,root length, stem diameter and biovolume indexwere recorded in the treatments inoculated with F. mosseae alone followed by B. mucilaginosus alone. Most of the plant growth parameters were significantly less in the dual inoculation treatment with F. mosseae + B. mucilaginosus compared to single inoculation with either of them. This brings out the negativeinfluence of the two inoculants on each other leading to a reducedeffect on plant growth.

Response of Capsicum annuum L. Seedlings Raised in Pro Trays to Inoculation with AM Fungus Glomus bagyarajii and K Solubilizing Bacterium Frateuria aurantia

Raising vegetable seedlings in pro trays is becoming an innovative approach to producing quality seedlings in horticulture. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Glomus bagyarajii and potassium (K) solubilizing bacterium Frateuria aurantia singly and together in enhancing the growth of capsicum seedlings raised in pro trays under polyhouse conditions. Different growth parameters such as shoot and root length, total seedling length, stem diameter, dry weight of seedlings, biovolume index, plant strength, vigour index, macro and micronutrient uptake, mycorrhizal root colonization, and the population of F. aurantia in the root zone soil were monitored. Significantly higher shoot length, root length, stem diameter, and biovolume index were recorded in the treatments inoculated with G. bagyarajii alone, followed by F. aurantia alone. Most of the plant growth parameters were significantly less in the dual inoculated treatment with G. bagyarajii + F. aurantia compared to single inoculation with either of them. This brings out the negative influence of the two inoculants on each other leading to a reduced effect on plant growth.

Effects of Nano Chitosan and Bio Capsule on Growth, Yield and Quality of Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) in Poly-House Condition

A field experiment was designed in a Randomized Block Design with 9 treatments replicated thrice on Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) under poly-house condition. The Experiment examined the effect of nano chitosan, bio capsule and NPK @RDF application on growth, yield and quality of chilli and to work out the economics of various treatments. Various treatment combinations were prepared using different doses of Nano chitosan and Bio capusles in combination. It was observed that the treatment T8 (NPK + Nano chitosan 120 ppm + Bio capsule 120 ppm) was superior over other treatments in terms of growth, yield and quality of Chilli i.e., plant height (63.73 cm), fruit yield per 200m2 (3.27q), T.S.S. (9.67 0 Brix) and ascorbic acid (143.96 mg/100 g). Therefore, use of Nano chitosan @ 120 ppm along with 500 ppm Bio capsule could be used for getting better yield in chilli. Moreover, application of nano chitosan and bio capsule on nutritional quality of chilli could be studied in details further.
