Bridgeport's Socialist New Deal, 1915–36

Astutely argued and copiously documented with archival, newspaper, and oral history sources, this exploration of the coming to power and early years of a socialist administration in Bridgeport, Connecticut, offers an outstanding example of the strength of wedding social and political history on a local level. In six carefully crafted chapters, Cecelia Bucki describes the early-twentieth-century economy of Bridgeport, its Democratic and Republican manufacturing elite, and the mechanisms they used to control the community's purse strings. She delves into the disruptive impact of World War I and the diverse ethnic communities that made up the city's working class and their evolving political loyalties, and she explores the importance of the 1928 Al Smith campaign in shifting ethnic and working-class voter loyalties to the Socialist party. Bucki documents the reemergence of labor activism, particularly in the metal trades, the building trades, and the garment industry in the late 1920s and early depression years— in protests over unemployed relief, use of nonunion contractors, and sweatshops. Her meticulous examination of the politics of taxes, budgets, and city services is stunning; it suggests the value of focusing on fiscal politics fully to understand working-class political struggles in the 1920s and 1930s.

Open issues and perspectives of the present arrangements between FR of Yugoslavia and international financial institutions

The economic-financial relations with foreign countries and organizations and that is include transition of the Yugoslav politics and it is complex subject about characteristics of the actual arrangements of the FR Yugoslavia with international financial institutions and organizations and that is only one important part. But interrelations that processes is obviously for this article main subject are open questions and dealed with it a perspective of the future arrangements. We must take micro and macroeconomic measures dealed with problems of our society and economy that arrangements will be important factors of the development of the economic development. International Monetary Found is concluded that FR of Yugoslavia have a great successes in the reforms of macroeconomic policy and in the first part dealing with inflation and growth of the currency reserves and growth of the industry production. Dealing with new macroeconomic policy bring the results and new tax politics and liberalization of the tax policy an currency system at the beginning of this year. New framework of the privatization and definition of banking system there is create a new legal framework with goal of transformation economy to free market economy.

Equity and the politics of taxation in Japan

English Contemporary Japan confronts its worst fiscal crisis of the past 50 years. The limits of relying on public debt appear to have been reached, and thus tax increases are returning to the policy-making agenda. But the increases will largely be shaped by the argument that Japan’s tax system is too redistributive. Indeed, fiscal policy makers and the political process are already shifting more of the tax burden onto low-income earners. This article refutes the claim that Japan’s income tax is particularly redistributive, and places the Japanese example in the larger context of globalisation and regressive income tax reforms.

Public Works and Local Elites: The Politics of Taxation in Tlaxcala, 1780-1810

In the winter of 1791-1792, meetings were being held in all of the principal towns of the Mexican province of Tlaxcala. Decisions had been reached that something had to be done about the recurring flooding of the Zahuapa river in central Tlaxcala and, independently, about the lack of an adequate water supply for the southeastern provincial town of Huamantla. As a result of these meetings, two independent projects began both of which were locally conceived and, more importantly, locally funded. In a burst of civic pride groups of Spanishvecinos(landowners and merchants who claimed Tlaxcala as their home) and Indian communities collaborated in constructing and financing these improvements. The work on the Zahuapa lasted until 1802, and the work to supply water in Huamantla was ongoing in 1810 when the Hidalgo revolt interrupted it. What is interesting about these decisions is not the success of the projects themselves—the first failed badly and the second was foundering when aborted—but rather what they highlight about the way Spanish and Indian leadership in local communities interacted politically in the late Bourbon period, both with each other and with Bourbon officialdom.

Single-case technique for teaching the tax research process

This article describes an instructional technique using a single current tax case to demonstrate the many facets of tax research methodology. The technique is just one resource used for teaching the graduate tax research course, and provides for a richer contextual environment in which to learn the tax research process. Using a single case based on actual events, the many sources of statutory and judicial tax authority were incrementally evaluated to solve the tax problem, and integrally analysed for the final conclusions. In addition, the case centred on a very public and political tax issue, which generated increased interest among students and illustrated the political process associated with tax law development. Application of the technique for desired learning outcomes and assessment objectives are also discussed.
