The purpose of the present article is to investigate the social, economic and educational background of the Arab political elite in Palestine during the period of the British mandate. Through information obtained by the author from interviews and life histories of 100 highly important leaders, it has been possible for the first time to analyse the places of birth and residence, sectarian background, educational attainments, socio-economic status, and level of political involvement of the political elite. Since Palestinian society and politics were constantly in a state of change, this evaluation has furthermore taken account of three different stages in Palestinians politics, 1918-1934, 1935-1939 and 1939-1948, for which a comparison of elite characteristics at different times is valuable.
