Polarization measurements in K +n charge exchange at 6 and 12 GeV/ c

The polarization in K +n↑ → K 0p has been measured at 6 and 12 GeV/ c in the interval 0.1 < |t| < 1.0 using a polarized deuteron target. The results are compared to predictions from SU(3), exchange degeneracy (EXD) and line reserval, and from various phenomenological models.

Asymmetry in the scattering of protons on polarized deuterons at 1.21 GeV/ c

By using a polarized deuteron target we have measured the asymmetry in the differential cross section for elastic scattering of protons on deuterons and for quasi-elastic scattering of protons on protons bound in deuterons between the two states of opposite polarization, normal to the scattering plane of the initial deuteron. The beam momentum was 1.21 GeV/ c. It is checked that the neutrons bound in the deuterons are polarized to approximately 20%.

Effect of Quadrupole Deformation on High-Energy Scattering by Deuterons

The high-energy elastic scattering cross sections of the deuteron are shown, because of the $d$-state admixture, to be strongly dependent on the polarization of the deuteron spin. The polarization dependence is shown to explain the absence of a pronounced minimum in the differential cross section for unpolarized deuterons. For polarized deuteron targets, on the other hand, the minimum should assume a clearly observable form.

Choice of the proper set of neutron-deuteron scattering lengths from experiments on transmission of polarized neutrons through a polarized deuteron target

Up to now two alternative sets of quartet ( a 2) and doublet ( a 2) n-d scattering lengths are known. Measurements are reported which resolve this ambiguity and show that the correct set is that for which a 4 is larger than a 2.

Polarization Effects in Elastic Electron-Deuteron Scattering

A relativistic calculation is made of the effects of polarization in elastic electron-deuteron scattering in order to provide a theoretical basis for the complete measurement of the deuteron electromagnetic form factors. The $S$ matrix is calculated in the first Born approximation using the helicity representation for the incoming and outgoing particle states. The density matrix for the final state is obtained for an arbitrary initial state in the deuteron spin space. The two polarization experiments most likely to be feasible in the near future are examined in detail. These are (i) measurement of the spin alignment of the recoil deuteron for scattering of unpolarized electrons on unpolarized deuterons; and (ii) measurement of the differential cross section for scattering of unpolarized electrons on polarized deuterons. In particular, it is found that the interference term between the deuteron charge and quadrupole-moment form factors can lead to a measurable effect of 10-15% for a "reasonable" deuteron tensor polarization analyzer, or for a polarized deuteron target with percentage tensor polarization greater than about 0.1. These experiments provide a method for the separation of the deuteron charge and electric quadrupole form factors. Measurement of the latter provides a sensitive test of the $D$-state structure of the deuteron.
