Combined effect of PMD and PDL on four-wave-mixing-induced crosstalk in WDM system

We derive an explicit autocorrelation function (ACF) formula of state of polarization for a fiber transmission system with polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL), which is found to agree well with Monte Carlo simulation. Then we use the new ACF to investigate the combined effect of PMD and PDL on the polarization multiplexed scheme. We find the performance of the polarization multiplexed scheme can be deteriorated more severely than the case without PDL.

Pulse distortion induced by polarization-mode dispersion and polarization-dependent loss in lightwave transmission systems

The combined effects of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization-dependent loss (PDL) on pulse broadening in optical transmission links for both PMD uncompensated and compensated systems are investigated by numerical simulation. It is shown that, when PDL is large, PDL considerably reduces the efficiency of PMD compensation, which, we find, is mainly due to the increased higher order PMD caused by the combined effects of PMD and PDL, as well as nonorthogonal principal states of polarization.

System outage probability due to the combined effect of PMD and PDL

The system outage probability induced by polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) is studied by Monte Carlo simulations using a new waveplate model. The previous waveplate model gives zero PMD and PDL probability densities when PMD and PDL exceed certain values, while our new model does not have such a limitation. It is shown that the system outage probability strongly depends on the interaction of PMD and PDL and the acceptable PMD limit drops significantly with the increase of PDL.

PDL-induced channel power divergence in a metro WDM network

In this letter, we report on the effect of polarization-dependent loss (PDL) on the performance of a metro wavelength-division-multiplexing transparent optical network. We show that dynamic channel-by-channel power equalizers are needed in such networks for compensating the significant amount of PDL-induced channel power divergence that accumulates in transparent optical paths.
