Polarization-switchable structural colors generated by AlN metasurfaces and the effect of different substrates

Metasurfaces have the capability to boost the generation of distinct colors by improving the interaction between surface materials and photons. We present a straightforward and polarization-tunable aluminum nitride metasurface. This metasurface enables the display and concealment of the composition pattern and exhibits color switching by modifying the polarization state of the incident light. We further explore the impact of different substrates on metasurface performance. The results indicate that the full width at half maximum of the reflectance curves increases with the increase of the refractive index between the nanostructures and the substrate material, which leads to a broader dispersion of the structural colors in the spectrum. Moreover, the sizes of the nanostructures can be gradually reduced for the substrate with a high refractive index. These findings not only offer polarization-tunable structural color metasurfaces but also provide essential insights in selecting nanostructure and substrate materials, which will help in the design of nanostructures for such metasurfaces.

Ultra-wideband and high-efficiency polarization rotator based on liquid crystals

We propose a novel design of an asymmetrically anchored negative liquid crystal (LC) cell capable of linearly rotating the polarization axis of broadband light, with the rotation angle controlled by voltage. Unlike conventional LC cells that require polarization filters or retarders, our LC cell can directly modulate the polarization state of light without any additional components. The LC cell exhibits high polarization rotation efficiency over a wide wavelength range (200 nm to 2000nm), superior to the existing polarization modulators. We validate our design through theoretical calculations and numerical simulations, proving that a degree of linear polarization of over 0.95 can be achieved in the UV, visible, and NIR regions. Our design can be applied in optical communications, biological imaging, and spectroscopic technologies.

Vector angular spectrum model for light traveling in scattering media

Strongly scattering media disrupt both the wavefront distribution and the polarization state of the incident light field. Controlling and effectively utilizing depolarization effects are crucial for optical applications in highly scattering environments, such as imaging through dense fog. However, current simulation models have difficulty simulating the evolution of vector light fields within scattering media, posing challenges for studying vector light fields in strongly scattering environments. Here, we propose the Vector Angular Spectrum (VAS) model for simulating the propagation of vector light fields within scattering media. By introducing the angular spectrum distribution of vector light scattering and polarization conversion mechanisms, this model can simulate the depolarization effects of vector light propagating through strongly scattering media. The VAS model has also been used to investigate the focusing of vector scattered light through scattering media. Furthermore, the simulation results of the model have been validated through experiments. The proposed VAS model is expected to play a role in the theoretical research of vector scattered light and optical applications in strongly scattering environments.

Directional Phase and Polarization Manipulation Using Janus Metasurfaces.

Janus metasurfaces, exemplifying two-faced 2D metamaterials, have shown unprecedented capabilities in asymmetrically manipulating the wavefront of electromagnetic waves in both forward and backward propagating directions, enabling novel applications in asymmetric information processing, security, and signal multiplexing. However, current Janus metasurfaces only allow for directional phase manipulation, hindering their broader application potential. Here, the study proposes a versatile Janus metasurface platform that can directionally control the phase and polarization of terahertz waves by integrating functionalities of half-wave plates, quarter-wave plates, and metallic gratings within a cascaded metasurface structure. As a proof-of-principle, the study experimentally demonstrates Janus metasurfaces capable of independent and simultaneous control over phase and polarization, showcasing propagation direction-encoded focusing and polarization conversion. Moreover, the directionally focused points are utilized with distinct polarization states for advanced applications in direction- and polarization-sensitive detection and imaging. This unique strategy for simultaneous phase and polarization control with direction-dependent versatility opens new avenues for designing ultra-compact devices with significant implications in imaging, encryption, and data storage.

Terahertz single/dual beam scanning with tunable field of view by cascaded metasurfaces

Dynamic beam scanning with a dynamically tunable beam number, beam direction, and beam polarization remains a challenge in the terahertz gap, which is urgently needed for terahertz radar, next-generation wireless communication, and imaging applications. Different from programmable metasurfaces with element-level phase control, the beam direction is dynamically controlled by two cascaded all-dielectric metasurfaces during in-plane rotation. For a pair of circularly polarized beams with opposite handedness, the scanning field of view (FOV) can be the same or different according to the independent phase modulation in both layers and for both polarization states. Switchable single-beam and dual-beam scanning is achieved by controlling the incident polarization, which covers the ±60° FOV at 0.291 THz with an angular step of 1° and an average gain of 16.2 dBi. The output beam is quasi-circular polarized with an average ellipticity of 0.83. Single beam scanning along a Fibonacci spiral trajectory and dual beam scanning along symmetric and asymmetric trajectories are experimentally validated. Different beam scanning processes are recorded using a terahertz camera, which show good agreement with the theoretical prediction. The wide field-of-view continuous beam scanning with a switchable number of beams and a flexible FOV may have a significant impact on the development of terahertz radar and terahertz intelligent antennas.

Macrophages on the run: Exercise balances macrophage polarization for improved health

ObjectiveExercise plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving human health. However, the precise molecular mechanisms that govern the body’s response to exercise or/compared to periods of inactivity remain elusive. Current evidence appears to suggest that exercise exerts a seemingly dual influence on macrophage polarization states, inducing both pro-immune response M1 activation and cell-repair-focused M2 activation. To reconcile this apparent paradox, we leveraged a comprehensive meta-analysis of 75 diverse exercise and immobilization published datasets (7000+ samples), encompassing various exercise modalities, sampling techniques, and species. Methods75 exercise and immobilization expression datasets were identified and processed for analysis. The data was analyzed using boolean relationships which uses binary gene expression relationships in order to increase the signal to noise achieved from the data, allowing for the use of comparison across such a diverse set of datasets. We utilized a boolean relationship-aided macrophage gene model [1], to model the macrophage polarization state in pre and post exercise samples in both immediate exercise and long term training. ResultsOur modeling uncovered a key temporal dynamic: exercise triggers an immediate M1 surge, while long term training transitions to sustained M2 activation. These patterns were consistent across different species (human vs mouse), sampling methods (blood vs muscle biopsy), and exercise type (resistance vs endurance), and routinely showed statistically significant results. Immobilization was shown to have the opposite effect of exercise by triggering an immediate M2 activation. Individual characteristics like gender, exercise intensity and age were found to impact the degree of polarization without changing the overall patterns. To model macrophages within the specific context of muscle tissue, we identified a focused gene set signature of muscle resident macrophage polarization, allowing for the precise measurement of macrophage activity in response to exercise within the muscle. ConclusionsThese consistent patterns across all 75 examined studies suggest that the long term health benefits of exercise stem from its ability to orchestrate a balanced and temporally-regulated interplay between pro-immune response (M1) and reparative macrophage activity (M2). Similarly, it suggests that an imbalance between pro-immune and cell repair responses could facilitate disease development. Our findings shed light on the intricate molecular choreography behind exercise-induced health benefits with a particular insight on its effect on the macrophages within the muscle.

On the possibility of domain structure formation in lithium niobate by low energy (< 5 keV) electron beam

The authors' assumption about the possibility of nanodomain generation in the ferroelectric LiNbO3 by relatively low energy (< 5 keV) electron beams has been experimentally confirmed. The calculated electron-induced electric fields and changes in the polarization state of the near-surface layer in the -Z cut of LiNbO3 agree with the experimental results at the energies of the primary electrons Eb = 1 and 3 keV. In the proposed four-layer model of surface charging by low-energy electrons, electron-stimulated desorption of compensating atoms and molecules from the contaminated absorbing film into a vacuum plays an important role. The presented new results confirming the formation of domains in the near-surface layer at low electron beam energy can expand the possibilities of domain engineering using electron beam technologies, especially in the field of photonics.

Polarization measurement of vacuum ultraviolet light using visible fluorescence from neon atoms

The polarization state of the vacuum ultraviolet light has been studied with a fluorescence polarimeter based on the conversion of short wavelength light into visible fluorescence via atomic resonance. In addition to the previously established method using helium atoms, the results show that polarization state of vacuum ultraviolet light can be evaluated by observing the visible fluorescence emitted from neon atoms. This study demonstrates that a fluorescence polarimeter can be used in conjunction with a variety of atoms and molecules and thus extends the range of wavelengths to which this method can be applied.

Lightning Location Method Using Orthogonal Coded Polarization Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer in Optical Fiber Transmission

Lightning strike is one of the main factors affecting power transmission lines and may lead to broken strands and damage of transmission lines, resulting in abnormal power supply. To improve the accuracy of lightning location, this paper presents a polarization optical time-domain reflectometer (POTDR) lightning location method based on orthogonal coding technology. The lightning strike point can be located by detecting the state of polarization (SOP) mutation of Rayleigh backscattering in the POTDR system. The orthogonal coding technology is used to improve the distance and accuracy of POTDR lightning location. Through calculation and simulation analysis, the location accuracy is significantly improved at the same sensing distance compared with the ordinary POTDR lightning location method. The lightning strike location error can be limited to 200 m in 20 km sensing distance which meets the actual engineering needs. The results of this paper are important to improve the operation and maintenance efficiency of transmission lines and reduce maintenance costs in the power industry.

Flexible focal array engineering with a binary array vector optical field

In recent years, the vector optical field (VOF) with space-variant polarization distribution has attracted great attention due to its unexpected effects and applications in a wide range of areas. The focal engineering plays the most important role, as the focused VOF provides various interesting properties. Here, we propose a kind of binary array VOF (BA-VOF), which can be applied in focal array engineering. The BA-VOF comprises an array of the first base field of radially polarized VOF and an array of the second base field of superposed subfields with phase modulations. We theoretically design and experimentally generate the BA-VOF. Based on the BA-VOF, we present a flexible method to manipulate the amount of the focal spots in the focal array. Moreover, the polarization state and spin angular momentum of each focal spot in the focal spot array can also be flexibly manipulated. The BA-VOF and the flexibly manipulated focal array are inspirable in the area of structured light, which can be applied in regions needing focal engineering, such as optical tweezers, optical fabrication, optical imaging, and so on.

Scattering of a spinning dielectric sphere to polarized plane waves

The exact expression of the wave vector inside a spinning homogeneous dielectric sphere illuminated by polarized plane waves is derived utilizing the “instantaneous rest-frame” hypothesis and Minkowski’s theory. On this basis, the analytical expressions of the electromagnetic field in the rotation sphere system are attained. The asymmetry of the system is discussed, in which the cause is emphasized. The influence of the polarization states and rotation angular velocity on the scattering are analyzed, including the optical rotation effect and photonic hook (PH). The results of this manuscript have extensive application prospects in optical tweezers, particle manipulation, and antenna design.

Broadband and tunable fiber polarizer based on a graphene photonic crystal fiber.

The recent flourishing development of two-dimensional (2D) graphene has sparked considerable interest and extensive research on graphene-based optical fiber polarizers. However, studies on graphene-optical fiber polarizers focused on the structure with graphene films attached to side-polished fibers, which face challenges such as low birefringence of 10-6, low polarization extinction ratio (PER), and narrow polarizing window of tens of nanometers. Here, a fiber polarizer based on a graphene-photonic crystal fiber (Gr-PCF) is proposed firstly, which exhibits high birefringence of ∼2.5 × 10-3, high PER of ∼111 dB/mm, broad polarizing window of >400 nm, and tunable polarization states. Graphene or graphene/hBN/graphene (Gr/hBN/Gr) heterojunctions are attached to the surface of two square holes in the PCF to make one of the polarizing modes attenuate significantly. The tunability of the Fermi level (EF) in Gr/hBN/Gr enables the proposed device to function as a polarizer or a polarization-maintaining fiber. The combination of PCF's endless single-mode feature and graphene's broadband optical response feature enables the fiber polarizer to exhibit a wide spectrum range with single-mode transmission characteristics.

Spatiotemporally modulated full-polarized light emission for multiplexed optical encryption

Spatiotemporal control of full freedoms of polarized light emission is crucial in multiplexed optical computing, encryption and communication. Although recent advancements have been made in active emission or passive conversion of polarized light through solution-processed nanomaterials or metasurfaces, these design paths usually encounter limitations, such as small polarization degrees, low light utilization efficiency, limited polarization states, and lack of spatiotemporal control. Here, we addressed these challenges by integrating the spatiotemporal modulation of the LED device, the precise control and efficient polarization emission through nanomaterial assembly, and the programmable patterning/positioning using 3D printing. We achieved an extremely high degree of polarization for both linearly and circularly polarized emission from ultrathin inorganic nanowires and quantum nanorods thanks to the shear-force-induced alignment effect during the protruding of printing filaments. Real-time polarization modulation covering the entire Poincaré sphere can be conveniently obtained through the programming of the on-off state of each LED pixel. Further, the output polarization states can be encoded by an ordered chiral plasmonic film. Our device provides an excellent platform for multiplexing spatiotemporal polarization information, enabling visible light communication with an exceptionally elevated level of physical layer security and multifunctional encrypted displays that can encode both 2D and 3D information.

Metasurface-enabled broadband multidimensional photodetectors

Light encodes multidimensional information, such as intensity, polarization, and spectrum. Traditional extraction of this light information requires discrete optical components by subdividing the detection area into many “one-to-one” functional pixels. The broadband photodetection of high-dimensional optical information with a single integrated on-chip detector is highly sought after, yet it poses significant challenges. In this study, we employ a metasurface-assisted graphene photodetector, enabling to simultaneously detect and differentiate various polarization states and wavelengths of broadband light (1-8 μm) at the wavelength prediction accuracy of 0.5 μm. The bipolar polarizability empowered by this design allows to decouple multidimensional information (encompassing polarization and wavelength), which can be achieved by encoding vectorial photocurrents with varying polarities and amplitudes. Furthermore, cooperative multiport metasurfaces are adopted and boosted by machine learning techniques. It enables precise spin-wavelength differentiation over an extremely broad wavelength range (1-8 μm). Our innovation offers a recipe for highly compact and high-dimensional spectral-polarization co-detection.

High discrimination ratio, broadband circularly polarized light photodetector using dielectric achiral nanostructures

The on-chip measurement of polarization states plays an increasingly crucial role in modern sensing and imaging applications. While high-performance monolithic linearly polarized photodetectors have been extensively studied, integrated circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors are still hindered by inadequate discrimination capability. This study presents a broadband CPL photodetector utilizing achiral all-dielectric nanostructures, achieving an impressive discrimination ratio of ~107 at a wavelength of 405 nm. Our device shows outstanding CPL discrimination capability across the visible band without requiring intensity calibration. It functions based on the CPL-dependent near-field modes within achiral structures: under left or right CPL illumination, distinct near-field modes are excited, resulting in asymmetric irradiation of the two electrodes and generating a photovoltage with directions determined by the chirality of the incident light field. The proposed design strategy facilitates ultra-compact CPL detection across diverse materials, structures, and spectral ranges, presenting a novel avenue for achieving high-performance monolithic CPL detection.

Antiscreening and Nonequilibrium Layer Electric Phases in Graphene Multilayers.

Screening is a ubiquitous phenomenon through which the polarization of bound or mobile charges tends to reduce the strengths of electric fields inside materials. Here, we show how photoexcitation can be used as a knob to transform conventional out-of-plane screening into antiscreening-the amplification of electric fields-in multilayer graphene. We find that, by varying the photoexcitation intensity, multiple nonequilibrium screening regimes can be accessed, including near-zero screening, antiscreening, and overscreening (reversing electric fields). Strikingly, at modest continuous wave photoexcitation intensities, the nonequilibrium polarization states become multistable, hosting light-induced ferroelectriclike steady states with nonvanishing out-of-plane polarization (and band gaps) even in the absence of an externally applied displacement field in nominally inversion symmetric stacks. This rich phenomenology reveals a novel paradigm of dynamical quantum matter that we expect will enable a variety of nonequilibrium broken symmetry phases.

Measurement of new qualitative productivity kinetic energy from the perspective of digital and green collaboration--comparative study based on European countries

At present, the world is witnessing the historic convergence of a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial change with the transformation of the development mode, and it is strategically important and far-reaching to rapidly enhance new qualitative productivity kinetic energy (NQPKE) on the basis of the lessons learning from the experience of the pioneering countries for all countries, so as to expand the room for manoeuvre of the economic development, obtain the initiative of international competition, and realise the benign interaction of high-quality development and high-level of security. On the basis of analysing the formation mechanism of NQPKE, we characterize NQPKE by the coupling and coordination degree of digital productivity and green productivity, we analyse NQPKE by using the entropy weight TOPSIS method and the coupling and synergistic model, and analyse the spatial-temporal characteristics, steady state development and constraints of NQPKE by using the method of kernel density estimation, the Markov chain, the spatial Markov chain, and the obstacle degree model based on data from 21 European countries from 2009 to 2022. The study finds that: (1) The NQPKE shows a wave-like development trend, and the polarization or multi-polarization state of the whole and the four major regions has been slowly weakened, with a certain degree of "club convergence" and "spatial spillover"; (2) The overall situation of barriers to NQPKE is relatively stable, the insufficient investment in scientific and technological development and weak technological innovation capacity are the most critical factors constraining the NQPKE in various countries. Based on the above conclusions, the article proposes to hold high the banner of peaceful development and win-win cooperation, give full play to the "club convergence" and "spatial spillover" effects of NQPKE, accelerate the development of NQPKE adapt to local conditions, and the "digital + green" double base will stimulate technological innovation, and the construction of a digital and green synergistic management system stimulates the potential of the new quality productivity of enterprises, ultimately unleash the surging kinetic energy of new quality productivity development.

Formation of quasi unipolar pulses in nonequilibrium magnetized plasma channels

The possibility of controlling both the spectral and polarization properties of THz pulses propagating in strongly nonequilibrium extended magnetized plasma channels formed by intense UV femtosecond laser pulses in nitrogen (air) is analyzed. The formation of quasiunipolar pulses with a nonzero electric area and a specific state of polarization is discussed. The transformation of such pulses upon leaving the region of a static magnetic field is analyzed.
