September 11th Revisited: “Break on Through to the Other Side!!”

ABSTRACT In his discussion of Gentile’s and Togashi’s Plenary papers, the author explains how they are initially destabilizing, but ultimately reorienting and profoundly hopeful for us in these threatening, uncertain times. He reviews the arguments that the papers present, explores how they are challenging to him as a representative of a 1960’s liberal, Self Psychological perspective and illustrates how they can be applied to clinical work.

Perspectives on How the "Sige, Ge, & Related Compounds: Materials, Processing, and Devices" Field Has Changed over the Last 20 Years

The field of electronic devices and materials has seen major changes over the last ~20 years. The SiGe, Ge, & Related Compounds: Material Processing, and Devices symposium has documented much of this change. In 2004 the meeting grew out of a desire for the ECS to have a special ongoing symposium on SiGe & Ge as a materials system with increasing importance in silicon semiconductor technology. In 2008 the symposium was expanded to include Ge and Related compounds including SiC and III-Vs on Silicon to recognize the important work in these areas. In 2010 the symposium was expanded to include work in nano-wires, nano-membranes, and light emitting structures with SiGe and/or Ge. In 2012 the symposium explored finfet devices and expanded to include the area of GeSn. In 2014 the symposium explored the use SiGe and related compounds in more complex and advanced structures. In 2016 the conference had a theme around SOI and the FDSOI technology in particular. In 2018 the themes were the ever expanding device structures and role epitaxy has played in it.Each year the plenary talks were selected to give a view of the industry and the conference. These talks give us insight into the symposium and how the field has changed over time.In 2004 the first symposium “SiGe 1: Materials, Processing, and Devices” focused on the SiGe HBT transistor performance and SiGe epitaxial technology. But CMOS scaling was also presented. These trends were reflected in the plenary talks were given by John Cressler on “Using SiGe HBTs for Mixed-Signal Circuits and Systems: Opportunities and Challenges” and Judy Hoyt on “Enhanced Mobility CMOS.” This was the first symposium and we set the conference organization with multiple topical committees and published the first proceedings.In 2006 the “SiGe and Ge 2” symposium continued the themes of SiGe and Ge Epitaxy, SiGe HBT, CMOS scalling, and added silicon photonics. The Plenary talks were given by Dimitris Antoniadis on “Channel Material Innovations for Continuing the Historical MOSFET Performance Increase with Scaling” and Cary Gunn on “CMOS Photonics for High Speed Interconnects.”In 2008 the “SiGe, Ge, & Related Compounds 3” symposium changed in composition bringing IIIV and other compounds into the symposium. The Plenary papers were by Krishna Saraswat on “Germanium for High-Performance MOSFETS and Optical Interconnects,” and Wiebe B. de Boer on “Si and SiGe Epitaxy in Perspective.” Krishna focused on the role of Ge in modern devices and Wiebe focused on the history of SiGe epitaxy at ASM.In 2010 the “SiGe, Ge, & Related Compounds 4” greatly expanded topics while maintaining the core of SiGe HBT and CMOS scaling. The plenary papers were given by K. Kuhn on “Past, Present, and Future: SiGe and CMOS Transistor Scaling” and L. Kimmerling on “Scaling Energy and Form Factor with Germanium Microphotonics.” The conference emphasis continued on SiGe epitaxy, CMOS scaling, and HBT performance with a new optoelectronics focus area.In 2012 the “SiGe, Ge, & Related Compounds 5” focused on the finfet and GeSn. The plenary papers were given by E. Nowak “Advanced CMOS scaling and FinFET Technology” and C. Hu on “FinFET and UTB – How to make very short channel MOSFETs.” There were 4 sessions containing papers with GeSn.In 2014 the “SiGe, Ge, & Related Compounds 6” returned to CMOS scaling and the SiGe HBT. The plenary papers were given by K. Uchida and T. Takahashi on “Extending the FETs: Challenges and Opportunities for New Materials and Structures” and L. Zimmermann (IHP) on “High-Performance Photonic BiCMOS – Next Generation More-than-Moore Technology for the Large Bandwidth Era.”In 2016 the “SiGe, Ge, & Related Compounds 7” focused on FDSOI. The plenary papers were given by Bruce Doris “FDSOI Past, Present and Future” and Carlos Mazure and S. Cristoloveanu “ FD-SOI: The History from Early Transistors to Today.”In 2018 the “SiGe, Ge, & Related Compounds 8” focused on CMOS scaling and SiGe as an enabling material. The plenary papers were given by Maszara, Witold on “Contemporary and Future Logic Devices” and by Tsu-Jae Liu on “ Silicon-Germanium: Enabler of Moore's Law.”In 2020 the “SiGe, Ge, & Related Compounds 9” symposium focused on III-Vs and Silicon Photonic Sensors. The plenary papers were given by N. Collaert on “The revival of compound semiconductors and how they will change the world in the 5G/6G era,” and Ben Miller on “Creating the Interface Universe between the Universe and Data with Integrated Photonic Sensors."Highlights from these plenary talks and symposium topics will be presented.

The IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) is held annually, sponsored by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS). The 48th IEEE NPSS ICOPS was organized ONLINE from September 12 to 16, 2021. The ICOPS2021 was initially planned as an onsite physical conference to be held in Stateline, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, from June 20 to 24, 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was shifted to online virtual conference. The conference’s technical program included a wide range of plasma science and technology topics, which ranged from basic and fundamental research to traditional and emerging technology applications. Over 380 accepted abstracts represented plasma scientists from 28 countries, with the total number of registered attendees over 425. More than 300 abstracts were published in IEEE Xplore after the conference. The program also included a one-day Minicourse titled “Plasma Spectroscopy: The Full Spectrum From X-Rays to Radio Waves.” This short course with ten outstanding lectures, which spanned a broad spectrum of plasma spectroscopy, was held on September 16, 2021, and attracted a record number of 83 participants from ten countries.

Bilingualism, Multilingualism and Translingualism as Problems of Modern Culture

On December 3-4, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the People’s Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University), in cooperation with Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the University of Texas at San Antonio, held the 7th International Conference Bilingualism, Multilingualism, Translingualism and Language Education. This unique research and practice project on bilingualism in post-Soviet countries takes place under the guidance of the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (IATRLL). The initiators and hosts of the Conference are professors of the RUDN University U. M. Bakhtikireeva and V. P. Sinyachkin. The Conference opened with the speeches of A. V. Dolzhikova (Institute of Russian Language, RUDN University), N. S. Trukhanovskaya (Ministry of Science and Higher Education), S. Kellman (University of Texas), E. D. Suleimenova (Kazakhstanian ATRLL), L. G. Balasanian (Armenian ATRLL). Plenary papers concerned the issues of language crosscultural development, bilingualism, translation in intercultural communication. One of the key topics was the transformation of the institutional language discourse and its impact on education policy. Thematic sessions elaborated on these problems and covered the history and reality of group and individual bilingualism, theory and practice of language teaching and translation. Participants of the Knowledge Transfer workshop discussed possibilities of a systemic approach to teaching Russian for native and non-native speakers. Researchers and language teachers had a great opportunity to share their academic and practical expertise on language education and intercultural communication. In line with the previous conferences, theoretical issues of bilingualism, the study and description of its features attracted considerable attention. The Conference attracted specialists in numerous fields and served as a venue for cooperation: bilingualism today needs further discussion and searching for new answers to the long-standing questions.

The International Workshop “Navigation and Motion Control” (NMC) is organized by the State Research Centre of the Russian Federation – Concern CSRI Elektropribor, JSC, with participation of ITMO University and St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University. Also, the Workshop would not have been held without support of the Academy of Navigation and Motion Control and its President, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Vladimir G. Peshekhonov.The Workshop is aimed at making the participants familiar with new technologies in presentday navigation and motion control systems, in the fields of data processing and systems development. SPIES 2019 is one of the principal events for power and energy experts from academia, industry, utilities, power and energy service providers, researchers and scientists.SPIES 2019 is supported in Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. The Fourth Museum Assembly in Crimea. The review

The Fourth Museum Assembly held within the framework of the Fourth World Professional Forum “The Book. Culture. Education. Innovations” (June 18–22, 2018, Sudak, Republic of Crimea) is reviewed. The 2018 topic was “Regional museums: To preserve traditions, to implement innovations”. The Assembly was organized through the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Crimea. The reviewers discuss the topics and problems revealed in the plenary presentations and papers delivered at the section “Museums in the modern information and cultural space”. The thematic sessions were supplemented with master classes “Research with the museum collections” and “Exhibitional work”. When concluding the Fourth Museum Assembly, the participant suggested that in future, more attention should be given to museum libraries. The officers of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Crimea admitted that the Assembly should be held regularly as it served the site to share experiences and improve professional competences of museum specialists of Crimea and Russia, on the whole.

The future of the European Economic and Monetary Union: European monetary and fiscal policies

NOeG 2015, the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Austrian Economic Association, took place in Klagenfurt, June 5–6, 2015. It was organized by the Department of Economics, Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt. The main theme of the conference was ‘‘The Future of the European Economic and Monetary Union—European Monetary and Fiscal Policies’’. 55 papers dealing with macroeconomic policies in the European Union, especially the Euro Area, as well as other fields of economics were presented and discussed. Among the highlights were invited plenary papers by Mike Wickens (University of York), Seppo Honkapohja (Bank of Finland) and Ansgar Belke (University of Duisburg-Essen); and a plenary discussion on ‘‘The Future of the Euro’’ with Ansgar Belke, Peter Gauper (Raiffeisen Landesbank Karnten), Thomas Gehrig (University of Vienna), Ewald Nowotny (Oesterreichische Nationalbank) and Willi Semmler (New School for Social Research, New York) as invited speakers. The present special issue of Empirica—Journal of European Economics contains the invited papers and a selection of papers from the conference devoted to the main topic of the conference. They were selected from a larger number of submissions following the usual refereeing process of the journal. At the time of the conference, economic policy makers in the Euro Area were fully occupied with the ‘‘Greek tragedy’’ of exploding sovereign debt amidst a deep recession with record unemployment and negative growth. Several contributions to the conference and to this issue deal with that crisis, which not only affected Greece but the entire Euro Area. The IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) is an annual meeting of the plasma physics community known for the broad range of topics addressed as well as for its varied international locations. The 42nd ICOPS was held in Belek, Antalya, Turkey, on May 24–28, 2015. It was the first time that ICOPS was held in Turkey and the region. The General Chair of ICOPS 2015 was Prof. Lutfi Oksuz from Suleyman Demirel University (Isparta, Turkey), the Technical Program Chair was Dr. Christine Coverdale from Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM, USA), and the conference Liaison was Prof. Edl Schamiloglu from the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM, USA). As is traditional, the conference consists of all plasma science topics including 7 technical sessions and 35 subsessions. There were almost 400 registrants at ICOPS 2015, and over 500 abstracts are included in the conference. This ICOPS 2015 meeting especially attracted attendance from the Middle East, China, and Russia.

Plenary presentations and public citations from The American Association for Thoracic Surgery

ObjectiveWe examined the impact of work presented in the plenary sessions at the meeting of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), by determining how frequently the published papers corresponding to the session presentations during the past 20 years, were cited; those that were most cited were identified. MethodsWe reviewed the AATS meeting programs from the 20-year period from 1994 to 2014 and identified the corresponding publications in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (JTCVS) from all abstracts presented at the plenary sessions. Papers were categorized as cardiac, thoracic, or congenital. References were evaluated for subsequent citation in the Web of Science (WoS), and Google Scholar (GS). We determined both the median number of citations overall, and per year. For comparison, we evaluated numbers of citations in WoS from current JTCVS papers in issues containing the 3 most-cited plenary session papers. ResultsAmong 195 published plenary papers, the median number of citations in WoS and GS was 49 and 76, respectively. The median total number of citations in WoS was as follows: 51 for cardiac-category papers (n = 105); 61 for thoracic (n = 55), and 41 for congenital (n = 35). These values were higher than the median total number of citations for contemporary nonplenary JTCVS papers: cardiac (22, n = 55; P < .001); thoracic (31.5, n = 8; P = .183); and congenital (15.5, n = 24; P = .002) papers published in JTCVS. The median number of citations per year since publication for plenary publications was 5.9 (cardiac), 6 (thoracic), and 3.7 (congenital), respectively. ConclusionsPublications corresponding to the plenary sessions of the AATS are highly cited and include some of the seminal studies in our field in the past 20 years.

On the modern problems and challenges of information security international scientific-practical conference

The proceedings of a conference that was held on April 2014 at the Moscow University of Finance and Law (MFUA) are described. More than 40 papers were presented in three sections: Information Security Technology, Software and Hardware for Data Protection, and Promising Directions of Information Security. Brief overviews of plenary papers, as well as main section reports, are given.

The 2013 IEEE Pulsed Power and Plasma Science Conference (PPPS 2013) was held at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, CA, USA in June 2013. The PPPS 2013 combined the 19th IEEE Pulsed Power Conference (PPC) and the 40th IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS). This conference marks the third combined IEEE PPPS meeting, following the very successful PPPS 2001 in Las Vegas, NV, USA, and the PPPS 2007 in Albuquerque, NM, USA. The most recent ICOPS was held in 2012 in Edinburg, Scotland, and the most recent PPC was held in 2011 in Chicago, IL, USA.
