Orchestration mechanisms in sustainability-oriented innovation: a meta-organization perspective

Purpose This paper aims to investigate how orchestration mechanisms characterizing meta-organizations can support sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) leveraged by digital transition. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a qualitative approach. The authors collected qualitative data from 41 in-depth interviews with key informants, participatory longitudinal observations and secondary data analysis related to a digital innovation hub (DIH) and its network. Findings The findings reveal how meta-organizations, such as DIHs, advance SOI – considering the potentialities of digital technologies – through four orchestration mechanisms: collaboration platform setup, SOI resource arrangement, SOI process enablement and SOI scale-up. Each mechanism is founded on recurrent SOI practices identified as aligning, assembling and progressing, and each is characterized by specific activities that depend on meta-organizations’ evolutionary purposes related to the stages of the creation process. The activation of mechanisms concerns a process outlining three sequential evolutionary trajectories: for assessing and regulating interaction, for promoting and coordinating collective action and for creating a collective identity. Originality/value This study contributes to meta-organization and orchestration research oriented toward SOI and leveraged by the digital transition, and considers the distinctive orchestration mechanisms and practices required to support SOI leveraged by the digital transition. Differently from previous research on orchestration and meta-organizations, this study considers the time perspective, and thus, the sequentiality of mechanisms (evolutionary trajectories) to achieve the purposes characterizing the stages of meta-organizations’ creation process.

The impact of offshore energy hub and hydrogen integration on the Faroe Island’s energy system

This study explores the integration of offshore wind energy and hydrogen production into the Faroe Islands’ energy system to support decarbonisation efforts, particularly focusing on the maritime sector. The EnergyPLAN model is used to simulate the impact of incorporating green hydrogen, produced via electrolysis, within a closed energy system. The study evaluates different configurations of hydrogen production and their feasibility focusing on electrolyser technologies and placement options (in-turbine, platform-based, and shoreline). The hydrogen produced is intended for ammonia production, replacing 11% of the fossil fuels used in maritime transport by 2030. Results indicate that integrating hydrogen with offshore wind energy can reduce fossil fuel reliance and carbon dioxide emissions. The in-turbine electrolyser setup offers the cost-effective placement option, while the platform setup is the most expensive. Among the three electrolyser technologies evaluated (alkaline, solid oxide and proton exchange membrane), the alkaline electrolyser results in the lowest overall system cost. The findings provide insights into the potential for renewable energy systems in a small island context and contribute to a broader understanding of green hydrogen’s role in energy transitions.

Development of Export-Oriented Smes Through the Implementation of Client Relationship Management (CRM)

In the development of SMEs, it is very necessary to increase the strength of resources as the basis for developing markets and products. This fact illustrates that the sequence of the main strategies that must be chosen is concentration on increasing strength by conducting HR training and increasing ongoing mentoring and understanding which helps in mastering the material. The solution in managing digital exports is to carry out a Client Relationship Management (CRM) assistance scheme that is attached to campus community service activities. CRM adoption is utilized to track export results, assess client satisfaction and lessons learned, and elicit constructive criticism. The actors can design the proposed CRM application using a shared platform that classifies business needs in export preparation assistance. The purpose of this study is to analyze and design an advertising plan and strategy for the Klote brand. In the digital age and an increasingly competitive business environment, advertising media plays a vital role in building brand awareness and reaching target audiences if the media is used properly. The research takes a qualitative approach, conducts interviews with founders and relevant sources, and analyzes consumer and market behavior. The results provide detailed insight into the preferences and characteristics of Klote's target audience, as well as the factors that influence the effectiveness of his Shopee homepage as an advertising vehicle. Based on these findings, appropriate planning and design strategies for advertising materials are developed, from media selection to formulating appropriate messages. The study should organize the structure, present the brand and product, and provide information about the product from the design created so that the advertising strategy and the planned concept can work together and support each other. Especially since he has a shop by Klote himself. The Shopee platform setup still needs to be revised in terms of advertising strategy and concept.

Optical fiber sensing for monitoring chloride ion concentration and pH in concrete structures

This paper presents the development and assessment of two individual optical fiber sensing systems either for monitoring chloride concentration or pH range in structural health monitoring of concrete structures. Excessive chloride ions possess the ability to corrode the steels of reinforced concrete structures that affect the safety and health of concrete structures. In addition, the pH of concrete structures decreases to a value close to 9.5 that externally exhibits carbonation and durability problems. The optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensing platform setup for chloride ion concentrations and the spectral responses of the MZI for the aqueous samples of fresh concrete supernatant (W/C = 0.35 and W/C = 0.65) with salt water solutions in different concentration ranges from 0.015% to 12.5% were measured. An optical fiber pH sensing system is proposed to implement structural health monitoring of concrete especially in pH measurement, which is composed of a fiber optical sensing system with a Visible-NIR bifurcated fibers, a CUV-UV cuvette holder, a broadband light source, a HR 4000 UV-NIR spectrometer, and a personal computer for data acquisition. We measured different pHs of the standard solutions with different pHs of 1, 4.08, 4.95, 5.99, 7.09, 8.07, 9.75. The optical fiber MZI sensing platform has shown the capacity for monitoring of chloride ion concentrations in the ranges from 150 ppm to 125000 ppm. A linear fit (adj. R-Square = 0.87207 and 0.97876 for fresh concrete supernatant with W/C = 0.35 and W/C = 0.65, respectively) for the graph of sensing response, light intensity or transmission loss, as a function of the chloride solution concentration for this 8-cm MZI sensor. Furthermore, based on the optical fiber pH sensing results, we found a linear increase in the maximum intensity (counts) as the pH of standard solution increased from1 to 9.75 (adj. R-Square = 0.91367).

QQ Music Business Model Competitiveness Analysis: Social Economy Perspective

The social economy has played a significant role in the development of QQ Music. To explore the impact of the social economy on QQ Music’s business model, this paper analyses two aspects: first, the type of community and the community demand existed in the platform of QQ Music; second, the procession embodied in QQ Music’s business model to commercialize communities. The study shows that the competitiveness of QQ Music’s business model lies in its platform set-up and user-paid service set-up. The user community sorting mechanism helps QQ Music users find the right community that suits them and fulfills their community needs. The “highly personalized service” and “highly enriched payment scenarios” reflected in the user payment settings can help users achieve an excessive amount of community demand, stimulating user consumption.

Marketing in the metaverse era: toward an integrative channel approach.

The development pace of digital socialization has accelerated drastically in the past decade, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic. Through that continuing digital shift, the idea of the metaverse, a virtual parallel world that can digitally replicate people's lives, is developing fast through Meta's (previously known as Facebook) announcement in October 2021 that it will dedicate sizeable investments in it. While the metaverse provides immense opportunities to brands, the primary concern will be on how integrate it with current media and retail channels, whether they are offline or online. Accordingly, using an exploratory qualitative approach, this study examined the potential strategic channel-based marketing routes that companies would face in the presence of the metaverse. The findings show that the route to market will become much more complex given the metaverse's own platform setup. Strategic multichannel and omnichannel routes are examined through a proposed framework that takes into consideration the expected evolution of the metaverse platform.

Bridging 3D Slicer and ROS2 for Image-Guided Robotic Interventions.

Developing image-guided robotic systems requires access to flexible, open-source software. For image guidance, the open-source medical imaging platform 3D Slicer is one of the most adopted tools that can be used for research and prototyping. Similarly, for robotics, the open-source middleware suite robot operating system (ROS) is the standard development framework. In the past, there have been several “ad hoc” attempts made to bridge both tools; however, they are all reliant on middleware and custom interfaces. Additionally, none of these attempts have been successful in bridging access to the full suite of tools provided by ROS or 3D Slicer. Therefore, in this paper, we present the SlicerROS2 module, which was designed for the direct use of ROS2 packages and libraries within 3D Slicer. The module was developed to enable real-time visualization of robots, accommodate different robot configurations, and facilitate data transfer in both directions (between ROS and Slicer). We demonstrate the system on multiple robots with different configurations, evaluate the system performance and discuss an image-guided robotic intervention that can be prototyped with this module. This module can serve as a starting point for clinical system development that reduces the need for custom interfaces and time-intensive platform setup.

A Robust Post-Grasping Control Design for Robotic Testbed Demonstration of Space Debris Disposal

In this article, a ground-based floating platform setup that emulates the zero-gravity spacecraft's motion on the ground is utilized for an active debris removal mission scenario. There are various phases in an active debris removal mission, which could be listed as close-range rendezvous, attitude coordination in case of tumbling target, grasping of the debris spacecraft, and the post grasping (debris removal phase). This article focuses on the post-grasping phase of the debris removal mission, with the assumption that the floating platform has grabbed (grasped) a debris of unknown mass and mass distribution, which adds to the modeling uncertainty of the newly unified platform (floating platform+debris). In sequel of the debris grasping, the floating platform needs to follow the desired path to move the debris to a desired secure location. This post-grasping scenario introduces multiple challenges rising from various parametric uncertainties in the robot's dynamics rising from nonlinearities, inaccuracy in estimating its inertia, discretization of thruster inputs using PWMs, and external disturbances. Also, since the robot maneuvers and operates in eminently constrained environments, the controller must ensure impeccable accuracy. The state-of-the-art controllers ensuring a constrained control of space robots with parametric uncertainties use a strict barrier Lyapunov function (BLF), which demands the initial conditions of the states to be within a specified bound, which is impractical in many scenarios. Hence, we propose a robust time-varying BLF controller for space robots, which tackles uncertainties and external disturbances while avoiding strict initial conditions for the constrained states. The controller's stability is validated using a Lyapunov-like method, and its performance is verified using a simulated Slider model.

Accurate Ultrasound Indoor Localization Using Spring-Relaxation Technique

This paper reports on the development of an ultrasonic sensing-based active localization system. The system employs an ultrasonic array to transmit chirp signals and time-of-flight measurement for ranging. The position of the receiver is estimated iteratively using the spring-relaxation technique. A median and 90-percentile error of 12.4 and 21.7 mm, respectively, were obtained for measurements at 625 positions within a 1.2 m × 1.2 m area testbed. The spring-relaxation technique outperforms the widely adopted linear least square-based lateration technique while using the same ranging data. The performance of the system is benchmarked against that of visible light positioning using the same platform setup. The reported results show the ultrasonic system to be more accurate when compared with the visible light positioning system, which achieved median and 90-percentile errors of 33.7 and 58.6 mm, respectively.

Flowerpot method for rapid eye movement sleep deprivation does not induce stress as defined by elevated serum corticosterone level in rats

Flowerpot method of rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) deprivation (REMSD) has been most extensively used in experiments to decipher the functions of REMS. The most common but serious criticism of this method has been presumed stress experienced by the experimental animals. The lack of systematic studies with appropriate controls to resolve this issue prompted this study. We have compared serum corticosterone levels as a marker of stress in male rats under REMSD by the flowerpot method and multiple types of control conditions. Additionally, to maintain consistency and uniformity of REMSD among groups, in the same rats, we estimated brain Na-K ATPase activity, which has been consistently reported to increase upon REMSD. The most effective method was one rat in single- or multiple-platforms set-up in a pool because it significantly increased Na-K ATPase activity without elevating serum corticosterone level. More than one rat in multiple platform set-up was ineffective and must be avoided. Also, large platform- and recovery-controls must be carried out simultaneously to rule out non-specific confounding effects.

The campus cloud platform setup based on virtualization technology

Abstract In the new era, with the increase of users’ demand for Internet content, Software and resources have been released and accessed as services. The service mode IT resources should be treated as water and electricity has put forward higher requirements for the data center construction, which determines that the traditional data center construction model and programs are no longer able to meet the needs of innovative applications of the new era. Therefore, the integration and innovation of new and old technologies is required. The high reliability, scalability, security, flexibility, greenness and resource customization of cloud computing technology enable more and more campuses to use cloud computing platforms to build campus networks. This paper mainly elaborates the use of virtualization technology and cloud computing technology to build campus cloud platform.

A Visual Approach to the UCN Industrial Playground

The demand for Industry 4.0 skills has increased over the last couple of years. This paper will focus on the multidisciplinary skillsets of IT, Production and Automation Engineering that are being trained on the UCN Industrial Playground (UCN IP). This platform has become an interesting common ground for understanding the knowledge gap in SMEs, when the idea of Industry 4.0 is explored and discussed. But with unexpected consequences led by COVID-19, an emergent need for new procedures start the discussion without having the foundational tools to set off the initial discussion.This paper will present an approach towards a virtual learning factory and present a digital twin platform setup with hardware-in-loop and thought into the ISA95 automation triangle, cyber-physical systems, and simulation timing issues. The paper will also explore the balance between time invested and skills learned – when going from an understanding from a physical setup to a visual approach.

Patient and Caregiver Experience with Outpatient Palliative Care Telemedicine Visits.

Background: Telemedicine visits reduce the physical and financial burdens associated with in-person appointments, especially for patients with serious illness. Little is known about patient and caregiver preferences regarding telemedicine visit timing and the discussion of sensitive topics by telemedicine.Objective: To characterize the experience of patients with serious illness and their caregivers receiving palliative care (PC) by telemedicine.Design: Mixed-methods telephone survey.Setting/Subjects: Patients and family caregivers who had at least one telemedicine visit with the outpatient PC team at our urban academic medical center.Results: A total of 35 patients and 15 caregivers were surveyed. Patient mean age was 61 years, 49% had cancer, and 86% were Caucasian. Caregiver mean age was 62 years. Mean satisfaction with PC telemedicine visits was 8.9 out of 10 for patients; 8.8 for caregivers. Patients (97%) and caregivers (100%) felt comfortable discussing sensitive topics over video. Participants felt telemedicine was an acceptable format to discuss most sensitive topics but 53% of caregivers preferred to receive bad news in person. Participants valued the convenience of telemedicine; they had concerns about rapport building and desired a more user-friendly telemedicine platform.Conclusions: Patients with serious illness and their caregivers rated telemedicine visits highly and felt comfortable discussing sensitive topics by video. Concerns included rapport building and telemedicine platform setup and quality. The rapid growth of telemedicine during coronavirus disease 2019 creates an imperative for research to understand the impact on the quality of care and mitigate any negative effects of telemedicine within a diverse population of patients.

Open Smart Energy Eco-System for the Future

Due to the increasing complexity of the global energy system and the amount of data transmitted by smart devices, there is an urgent need to unlock smart technologies and sendees with investments on the scalability of computational resources. This objective can be achieved by means of a standardized software platform that can support interoperability and behave as the main vehicle for the rapid implementation of innovative energy sendees. One possibility to enhance computational power on demand is cloud computing, which forms the Internet of Things (IoT). In this work, a customizable open-source IoT platform setup using the FIWARE framework is deployed, which exploits the advantages for a smart energy domain. The term platform comprehends a set of software tools that allow quick integration of various devices. This study presents the implemented platform and analyses its functionality in different use cases on the European level.

Applications and platforms in digitalisation of wind farm O&M – community feedback and survey results

Achieving performance optimisation and cost savings by advanced data analysis techniques and improved digital communication is a significant focus of wind farm operators and research organisations often framed under the terms IoT or Industry 4.0. Within the research project ‘ModernWindABS’, Fraunhofer IEE has conducted a twofold approach to identify new applications using modern methods that will innovate operation and maintenance processes. Based on a systematic structure of O&M processes and mathematic methods, innovative applications were identified and evaluated in expert workshops. Separately a survey among wind industry professionals with the focus on innovative applications through digital platforms has been conducted in partnership with German industry associations. From both approaches, applications, that enable failure risk monitoring, turn out as the highest priorities from the professionals consulted. Additionally, the survey results yield insights on participants’ expectations on benefits and financial contribution per organisational role and preferences regarding the platform setup and points out gaps between these expectations and current platform service designs. It further identifies the main barriers to the broader use of platforms, of which organisational and legal obstacles seem to outweigh technical problems.

Application of virtual reality technology in nuclear device design and research

Abstract The design, fabrication, assembly, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear devices are very complex processes, and virtual reality (VR) technology can be used at all stages to save time and reduce costs. This study introduces VR technology and its characteristics in detail. The China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) is in its engineering design phase and considerable analysis still needs to be conducted to ensure that it is safe. This includes investigating plasma geometry, stability, the scrape-off layer, and the discharge process and conducting an engineering analysis of its electromagnetic, thermodynamic, and structural characteristics. At the same time, many software applications are used, which generate a large amount of data; therefore, a system capable of managing such large quantities of data is required. VR technology certainly meets this requirement. In this paper, the design and development of a VR technology in a nuclear fission device is described, including the display interface of the melting pit and containment parameters, virtual roaming of the nuclear plant, and the operational flow of the main loop of the nuclear power plant, all in three dimensions. The CFETR VR platform setup is investigated (in terms of both hardware and software), and the future development of this platform is discussed.

Platform tilt stabilisation using inertial measurement unit sensor

This paper aims to develop a low cost two-axis pan-tilt platform stabilisation setup using a low-cost inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor, utilise elegant and widely used sensor fusion and control algorithm, and demonstrate the performance of such a system. The IMU sensor and the other components for the two-axis platform setup are selected initially based on the design calculations and the platform stabiliser setup is then designed and manufactured in accordance with the selected components. To perform platform stabilisation, reliable pan-tilt angular estimates are required from the IMU sensor. For this purpose, techniques such as sensor bias removal, digital low pass filter (DLPF) and sensor fusion algorithms are deployed considering the robustness of their performance in the real-time embedded hardware. First-order impulse response (FIR) filter is chosen as the DLPF algorithm and the complementary filter (CF) is chosen as the sensor fusion algorithm as these are widely recognised for their need of very less computational power. Finally, the pan-tilt stabilisation is performed by two separate PID servo control tuned using Zeigler-Nichols manual tuning rules and finally the performance of the control system in tracking the angular estimates is finally studied.

Application of the open-source cloud platform FIWARE for future building energy management systems

The integration of volatile, decentralized energy into building energy systems requires intelligent algorithms that are capable of controlling the augmented complexity and the interactions of subsystems efficiently. Not only do the algorithms require computing capacity, but also a feasible information and communication infrastructure. One possibility to provide computing power on demand is cloud computing that forms together with an extended connectivity of physical devices the Internet of Things (IoT). We present a customizable open-source IoT platform setup using FIWARE. For the integration of existing building automation networks, we extend an OpenMUC gateway with BACnet functionality and connect it to our platform via MQTT. We successfully demonstrate the overall setup with a web-based visualization of high resolution energy monitoring and a control loop as basic requirements for the integration of more advanced control algorithms in future building energy management systems. We find our setup generally feasible for both use cases and, hence, will aim for the integration of more advanced control algorithms in the future using the presented platform components.

A Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC) Engrafted Humanized Xenograft Model for Translational Immuno-oncology (I-O) Research.

The discovery and development of immuno-oncology (I-O) therapy in recent years represents a milestone in the treatment of cancer. However, treatment challenges persist. Robust and disease-relevant animal models are vital resources for continued preclinical research and development in order to address a range of additional immune checkpoints. Here, we describe a human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) - based humanized xenograft model. BGB-A317 (Tislelizumab), an investigational humanized anti-PD-1 antibody in late-stage clinical development, is used as an example to discuss platform set-up, model characterization and drug efficacy evaluations. These humanized mice support the growth of most human tumors tested, thus allowing the assessment of I-O therapies in the context of both human immunity and human cancers. Once established, our model is comparatively time- and cost-effective, and usually yield highly reproducible results. We suggest that the protocol outlined in this article could serve as a general guideline for establishing mouse models reconstituted with human PBMC and tumors for I-O research.
