A Short-Term Resistance Training Circuit Improved Antioxidants in Sedentary Adults with Down Syndrome.

Previous studies have found aerobic training improved oxidative damage in people with Down syndrome (DS). However, there is a lack of information regarding the influence of resistance training on redox imbalance in this population. Accordingly, this study was conducted to determine the effect of resistance training (RT) on antioxidant defence system in sedentary adults with DS. Thirty-six male adults with DS were recruited through different community support groups. Eighteen were randomly assigned to perform a circuit RT program with 6 stations, 3 days/week for 12 weeks. Plasma total antioxidant status (TAS), reduced glutathione (GHS), ascorbate, serum α-tocopherol, and erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity were assessed. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and carbonyl groups (CG) were assessed as markers of oxidative damage. Muscle strength was also measured. Dynamic torque of knee extensors and flexors as well as maximal handgrip strength was significantly improved after the completion of the training program. Plasma levels of TAS and erythrocyte glutathione reductase (GR) activity were significantly increased. Conversely, MDA and CG levels were significantly reduced. It was concluded RT improved antioxidant defence system and reduced oxidative damage in adults with DS. Further, long-term studies are required to determine whether the increased antioxidant system may improve clinical outcomes of adults with DS.

Circuit Resistance Training Increased Antioxidant Status In Adults With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have reported aerobic training may reduce both markers of oxidative damage and proinflammatory cytokines in adults with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). However to date, the information regarding the utility of resistance training on this population is scarce. Therefore, the current study was conducted to assess the influence of a 12-week circuit resistance training programme on total antioxidant status (TAS) in adults with chronic SCI. METHODS: Male adults (N=24) with complete SCI at or below T5 volunteered for this interventional study. Participants were randomly allocated to the intervention (n=12) or control group (n=12) using a concealed method. The intervention consisted of a 12-week circuit resistance training programme, 3 sessions/week. Participants completed 1-3 sets of 6-8 repetitions for each station at 55-70 % of 1-RM. To simulate a “real-world” experience, subjects remained in their custom wheelchair at each station. Plasma levels of TAS was determined spectrophotometrically. Lastly, the current protocol was approved by an Institutional Ethics Committee. RESULTS: When compared to baseline, resistance training significantly increased plasma levels TAS (0.40±0.07vs.0.46±0.09mmol/l;p=0.015) in the experimental group. No significant changes were found in the control group. CONCLUSION: A 12-week circuit resistance training program increased antioxidant in adults with chronic SCI. While current results are promising, future studies are still required to consolidate this approach in clinical application.

Total Antioxidant Status Correlates with Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Recurrent Depressive Disorder

Depressive disorder is a multifactorial diseases, that one of the typical feature are cognitive impairments. The aim of this study was to determine the total antioxidant status (TAS) in patients with recurrent depressive disorder (rDD) and to define relationship between plasma levels of TAS and the cognitive performance. the study comprised 74 subjects: patients with rDD (n = 45) and healthy subjects (n = 29). Cognitive function assessment was based on: Trail Making Test, The Stroop Test, Verbal Fluency Test and Auditory Verbal Learning Test. Statistically significant differences were found in the intensity of depression symptoms, measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) on therapy onset versus the examination results after 8 weeks of treatment (p < 0.001). The level of TAS was substantially higher in patients with rDD (p = 0.01). For rDD patients, elevated TAS levels were associated with worse cognitive test performance. The higher was the concentration of plasma TAS, the greater was the severity of depressive symptoms measured by HDRS before and after pharmacotherapy. (1) Higher concentration of plasma TAS in rDD patients is associated with the severity of depressive symptoms. (2) Elevated levels of plasma TAS are related to impairment of short-term declarative memory, long-term declarative-memory, verbal fluency and working memory.

Increased lymphocyte deoxyribonucleic acid damage in patients with cardiac syndrome X

Objectives To investigate whether there is lymphocyte deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage in patients with cardiac syndrome X (CSX), and its relation with total antioxidant status (TAS), inflammation and ischemia. Methods Twenty-three patients with CSX, 21 patients with non-CSX (NCSX) and 20 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Lymphocyte DNA damage (Arbitrary Unit) was assessed by alkaline single cell electrophoresis (comet) assay in peripheral lymphocyte, and plasma levels of TAS (mmol Trolox equiv./l) were determined using a novel automated measurement method. High sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and other biochemical parameters were measured from all subjects. Treadmill exercise test and coronary angiography were performed to CSX and NCSX groups. Results Lymphocyte DNA damage was increased in patients with CSX compared with NCSX and control group ( p < 0.001, for both). Also, TAS was decreased, and hsCRP was increased in CSX compared with NCSX and control group ( p < 0.001, for all). Lymphocyte DNA damage was correlated with magnitude of ST depression ( p = 0.034), hsCRP ( p = 0.001), TAS ( p < 0.001) and presence of diabetes ( p = 0.022) in bivariate analysis. In multiple linear regression analysis, lymphocyte DNA damage was correlated with only TAS ( β = −0.413, p = 0.017) and hsCRP ( β = 0.414, p = 0.006). Conclusion Lymphocyte DNA damage was increased in patients with CSX. The increase in lymphocyte DNA damage may be related with increased oxidative stress and inflammation in patients with CSX
