I am very pleased to take over the position of Editorin-Chief of Plant and Cell Physiology, the most prestigious and truly international journal focusing on physiology, biotechnology, biophysics, chemistry, genetics, molecular biology, gene engineering and cell biology of plants and microorganisms. I will start by saying that I will do my best to improve the quality of the journal and hope to maintain the journal’s integrity and to move it forward on the path that Professor Hiroo Fukuda, the previous Editor-in-Chief, has firmly established. Since its inception, Plant and Cell Physiology has contributed significantly to the advancement of plant science. The impact factor of Plant and Cell Physiology has continued to grow for several years. In 2005, the impact factor was 3.317. In 2006, the impact factor increased to 3.324, not only positioning Plant and Cell Physiology in second place among journals of all scientific fields in Japan, but also ranking 15th among 147 plant science journals in the world. To improve the quality of Plant and Cell Physiology, we welcome submissions from non-society members as well as society members. All manuscripts should be submitted in electronic form via Manuscript Central, our online submission system. All accepted papers will be published online as an Advanced Access within 2–3 days after production files are received. In the fastest case, Rapid papers will be printed within 40 days of acceptance. The time lag from acceptance to publication will be much less compared with regular papers in Plant and Cell Physiology, which are published on average within 70 days. Furthermore, Plant and Cell Physiology offers an optional Open Access (OA) publication, with a full cost of £1,500. OA means that papers are freely available online immediately after publication and increases the chance of citations over papers in publications kept under subscription control. We encourage all authors to take advantage of OA publication. Thanks to the united efforts of a great number of people including the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists (JSPP), Oxford University Press (OUP) and the Nakanishi Printing Company, Plant and Cell Physiology has advanced rapidly. In my view, it does not require a major overhaul, but the journal could benefit from some changes for further enhancement. Therefore, for 2008, the editorial board of Plant and Cell Physiology has approved several main plans. In order to improve the quality of the journal, we will cancel color figure charges that were considered rather expensive. Authors will be able to publish all color figures free of charge from Volume 49, Issue 4 in 2008. To enable this change, the manuscript handling charge and excess page charge will be raised slightly as follows: members of the society will be charged a handling fee of 10,000 yen, and non-member authors will be charged 20,000 yen. The excess page charge will be 20,000 yen per page regardless of society membership. Please refer to updated Instruction to Authors at http://www.oxfordjournals.org/pcp/for_authors/index. html. The current color charge is 40,000 yen per figure. This means that non-member authors who publish a color figure are paying 50,000 yen in total at present. However, with the new author charge scheme, the same authors will only be charged 20,000 yen. In the future, we will aim to create a more easily viewable Website and to redesign the cover. We hope that these approaches will put the journal in an excellent position for future success. I look forward to working with all of you: submitting authors, reviewers, the journal’s excellent staff, editors, associate editors and, last but not least, readers.
