How important are matching frictions in the labor market? Experimental & non-experimental evidence from a large Indian firm

This paper provides evidence of matching frictions in the Indian labor market. Using several methods to elicit genuine preferences of job-seekers over jobs, we show that: (a) there is substantial variation in job-seekers preferences over the same jobs; and (b) placement officers, responsible for placing job-seekers in jobs, have poor knowledge of it. Providing placement offers with this information improves matching of job-seekers to interviews, even after taking into account redistribution of jobs across job-seekers. Treated job-seekers get more preferred jobs and retain them in the short run (three months), but not in the longer run (six months).

The number of students who have been placed will be shown through various articles. This system helps the college keep records of current and past student registrations. The placement officer prepares schedules for all placement-related activities. The company provides a list of eligible students who are automatically notified. Students, TNP employees, and TPOs receive the necessary information. All students who have registered are eligible for this system

Placement Application for Department of Commerce with Computer Applications (Navigator)

The project's goal is to provide a proposal for the college's "DEPARTMENT PLACEMENT APPLICATION". The system is an application that, with the right login enabled, can be accessed and used efficiently across the entire organisation. The college's Department Placement Coordinator and Placement Cell can utilise this system as an application to manage student placement data. Students who log in should be able to upload a résumé with their personal and academic details on it. This project's primary feature is its one-time registration capability. The ability to keep track of student details is something our project offers. It lowers manual labour and paper work, which saves time. MYSQL is used for the backend and PHP is used for the front end of this project. This will give both the placement officer and students an accurate communication channel and reduces repetitious work that has to be carried out.

An Interactive Webcast Portal of Training Placement using SMTP and Database using PHP

The Training and Placement Department plays a crucial role in facilitating students' interactions with various companies and securing placements. By cultivating relationships with esteemed organizations and industrial establishments, the Placement Department assists both undergraduate and postgraduate students in exploring career opportunities. Its mission includes equipping students with knowledge, expertise, and skills to meet industry demands and make well-informed career choices. However, manual management of data pertaining to campus recruitment events poses difficulties, highlighting the need to automate these processes to minimize errors and improve efficiency. This study proposes the creation of a Training and Placement Application to tackle these challenges. The application will be web- based, featuring intuitive interfaces for both students and administrators (Training and Placement Officers, TPOs). To ensure usability across different devices, the application will be compatible with smartphones and web browsers. Leveraging React + Vite as the underlying technologies for design and development, the application aims to provide adaptability, customization, and scalability while retaining essential features for streamlined management of training and placement activities. Students will have the ability to create profiles and complete registrations effortlessly, while administrators can efficiently oversee and manage all operations through the application

Low Employability of Graduate Engineers – Ascertaining Role of Industry by leveraging Industry Total Interpretive Structural Modelling.

Abstract—The objective of this study is to conceptualize a Total Interpretive Structural Model (TISM) of factors leading to low employability of graduate engineers, at entry level, in context to Indian IT Industry. The paper focuses on factors emerging due to lack or low participation of IT Industry in overall academic activities contributing to low employability. Authors have developed Total Interpretive Structural Model (TISM) to understand the interplay of industry induced factors, leading to low employability of graduate engineers. Factors considered are limited to the role of IT industry in academia. Qualitative Semi Structured interviews & survey inputs gathered from academic experts including Senior Faculties, Heads of the Departments, Principals and Training and Placement officers from 10 engineering colleges in Maharashtra (India), are considered to arrive at factors highlighting the wanting contribution of IT industry. Total interpretive structural model has been developed for the factors leading to low employability. This model provides a hierarchical structure to the identified factors at four different levels based on their driving power and dependence. The model also portrays factor’s interplay with the help of direct and transitive linkages. Based on the research authors recommend key initiatives at fundamental factors which can have a cascading impact on other dependent factors. This research has implications for IT Industry, academia and academic governing authorities. The study provides an indicative list of strategic factors and the synergistic effect created by their interplay. The relationships amongst these factors are being modeled providing an insight, in terms of cause and effect relationship, prioritizing the areas to be addressed on priority. The proposed model, examining the factors of low employability due to IT industry’s wanting role in academic context is a fresh approach & pioneering one. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that analyzes the factors of low employability of graduate engineers using TISM approach, focusing on IT industry and not on academia, as being done historically. Paving the Way: Exploring Influential Factors that Shape Career Preferences among Students in Higher Education Institutions - Insights from Selected Arts and Science Colleges in Kerala

The aim of the research was to examine the elements that influence the career choices of university students. It is a selected study conducted across ten Kerala arts and science colleges ranked in the 2022 ranking of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). A sample of 375 students was selected from the selected higher education institutions. The results show that gender is significantly related to career choice. In addition, except for family factors like parents ‘education and family support, all other factors examined show weak, negative correlation with career choice. Family members’ profession and parental pressure prove to have significant negative association with the career path choice of students. Among the financial factors examined, future job opportunities, knowledge of high-paying jobs, job security, salary increases and perks, and opportunities for promotion and growth show a significant association with students' career choices. All of the personality factors examined correlate significantly with the career choice of the students. Among social factors, with the exception of teacher advice, college career guidance services, and alumni/friend success stories, all other variables studied show a significant association with career choice. Investigating on the factors that impact the career decisions of students, the results show that parental pressure, support from family members, future career opportunities, personal interest, social recognition related to a career, campus placements, influence of social media, and graduate/friend success stories have a significant impact on the students' choice of career. Among these predictor variables, the variables that have the greatest influence on career choices are parental pressure, future job opportunities, personal interest and campus placement. The study recommends universities to have an active careers advice center with a team consisting of a full-time placement officer and a student advisor. Recommendations for conducting psychometric tests to assess skills and conducting parent awareness programs to avoid parental pressure on students' career choices are recommended. Abstract: In this paper College Placement Program. A program that aims to improve an online application for training and the student placement department of our college. The program is an application that can be found throughout the college with correct access provided. This application can be used as an application of Training and Placement (TPO) officers of the college to manage student information about placement. Student sign-in should be able to upload their information to CV form. The application provides storage space for student details. It also provides the requested list of selected recruited students based on a given query. Administrator login can also search for any information stored by students.

Recruitment Management System

The task is to develop a web-based application for a college's placement administration system. The college's placement office uses a web-based application created on the Windows platform to store student data in a database for companies to utilize during the recruitment process if they have the required login credentials. The system has all the relevant data about the students. In order to send a CV to an employer, the system saves all of the students' personal data as well as their technical skills. A Comprehensive Campus Recruitment and Placement System for Optimizing the Hiring Process

Abstract: Campus Recruitment and Placement System's goal is to give students compatibility to make placement easier. This system has three login options: admin, teacher, and student. This is useful for college students, various employers who come to campus to recruit, and even the school's placement officer. Students can build their profiles and submit all of their information, including their grades, using the software system. The administrator can review each student's information and delete any invalid accounts. The system also includes a admin login so that different companies visiting the college can access a list of students. Students can examine a list of businesses that have posted job openings using the software system.

Inter-Linked Platform for Campus Placement in Higher educational Institutions of India

Abstract: Campus placement, also known as campus recruitment, is a crucial process for connecting students with potential employers and facilitating their entry into the job market. However, the traditional campus placement process can be timeconsuming, cumbersome, and inefficient, both for students and employers. In today's competitive job market, it is imperative to enhance the efficiency of the campus placement process and improve student employability. To address these challenges, we propose an interlinked platform for campus placement that leverages modern technology to streamline the recruitment process and enhance student employability. The proposed platform brings together various stakeholders, including students, employers, placement officers, and alumni, on a unified digital platform to create a seamless and efficient recruitment ecosystem. The interlinked platform incorporates a range of features to optimize the campus placement process. These features include an online portal for students to create and manage their profiles, upload their resumes, and apply for job opportunities. The platform also provides tools for employers to post job openings, search and shortlist candidates, and schedule interviews. Additionally, the platform facilitates communication between students and employers, allowing for real-time feedback and updates. One of the unique aspects of the interlinked platform is the integration of alumni networks. Alumni can serve as mentors, providing guidance and insights to students on the platform. They can also participate in recruitment activities, such as conducting mock interviews, providing industry-specific advice, and networking with potential employers. Skill profiles of Japanese English learners and reasons for uneven patterns

BackgroundVariations in the skill profiles of learners have become an important research area in recent years. However, there is a lack of empirical research on this topic in Japan. We conducted three studies to address this gap.MethodsStudy 1 investigated the characteristics of the flat and uneven skill profiles of Japanese learners of English using 10 datasets from five standardized four-skill second-language English proficiency tests. Studies 2 and 3 examined the reasons behind learners having these uneven profiles using a convergent mixed-methods approach (Creswell & Plano Clark, Designing and conducting mixed methods research, 2018) that consisted of a questionnaire and an interview, respectively.ResultsThe results of Study 1 suggested that a flat profile is uncommon, and that various types of uneven profiles exist across datasets. The most frequently observed uneven profiles were as follows: (a) listening, speaking, and writing are lower than reading (LSW<R); (b) speaking and writing are lower than listening and reading (SW<LR); and (c) speaking is lower than the other three skills (S<LRW). The results of Studies 2 and 3 suggested three key reasons, namely, (a) insufficient practice, (b) particular subskills or processes required to accomplish test tasks, and (c) unfamiliarity with test formats and test-taking environments.ConclusionsThe results demonstrated the importance of considering uneven skill profiles in L2 research and practice. These results have implications for test development, admission, placement, and pedagogy. For example, skill profile information can benefit admission and placement officers when they make a decision and can aid teachers and administrators in planning remedial instructions.

Vocational mindset perspective for supporting graduate employability: a mixed-method investigation

ABSTRACT In India, 80% of graduating engineers remain either underemployed or unemployed due to lack of specific professional and generic skills. This study focuses on understanding how engineering graduates can psychologically orient themselves concerning their career opportunities. Specifically, this study looks at the intersection between career planning attitudes, locus of control and employability perceptions of students. The study further investigates whether such career orientations can make graduate job-seekers more assertive and in control of their preparations for job interviews. A two-stage mixed-method design is applied to investigate this issue. In study 1, data is collected from 497 final year engineering students from several technical institutions from South India and subsequently analysed through hierarchical linear regression analysis. The findings reveal that locus of control orientation positively influences students’ internal cognitive processes, affecting their overall belief about their employability potential. In study 2, in-depth interviews with eight corporate recruiters and six placement officers are conducted through an E-Delphi setting. The objective of study 2 is to understand whether generic employability aspects are considered important while deciding a candidate’s suitability and how these cognitive career orientations can be inculcated appropriately among the students. The importance of developing a vocational mindset is stressed, and suggestions to foster the same have been explained at length.

Risk of Psychiatric Disorders Among Refugee Children and Adolescents Living in Disadvantaged Neighborhoods

Refugee children and adolescents are at increased risk of mental health difficulties, but little is known about how the characteristics of the neighborhood in which they resettle may affect vulnerability and resilience. To test whether neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with risk of psychiatric disorders among refugee children and adolescents and examine whether the association differs by sex, age at arrival, and family structure. This quasi-experimental register-based cohort study included refugees in Denmark aged 0 to 16 years at the time of resettlement from 1986 to 1998. A refugee dispersal policy implemented during those years assigned housing to refugee families in neighborhoods with varying degrees of socioeconomic disadvantage in a quasi-random (ie, arbitrary) manner conditional on refugee characteristics observed by placement officers. Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine the association between neighborhood disadvantage and risk of psychiatric disorders, adjusting for relevant baseline covariates. A neighborhood disadvantage index combining information on levels of income, education, unemployment, and welfare assistance in the refugees' initial quasi-randomly assigned neighborhood. First-time inpatient or outpatient diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder before age 30 years. Median (IQR) baseline age in the sample of 18 709 refugee children and adolescents was 7.9 (4.7-11.7) years; 8781 participants (46.9%) were female and 9928 (53.1%) were male. During a median (IQR) follow-up period of 16.1 (10.2-20.8) years, 1448 refugees (7.7%) were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder (incidence rate, 51.2 per 10 000 person-years). An increase of 1 SD in neighborhood disadvantage was associated with an 11% increase in the hazard of a psychiatric disorders (hazard ratio [HR], 1.11; 95% CI, 1.03-1.21). This association did not differ between male and female individuals, refugees who arrived at different ages, or those from single- vs dual-parent households. In secondary analyses using prescribed psychiatric medication as the outcome, a similar association with neighborhood disadvantage was found (HR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.03-1.14). In this cohort study, neighborhood disadvantage was associated with an increase in risk of psychiatric disorders. The results suggest that placement of refugee families in advantaged neighborhoods and efforts to enhance the neighborhood context in disadvantaged areas may improve mental health among refugee children and adolescents.

Analyzing an Appropriate Blend of Face-to-Face, Offline and Online Learning Approaches for the In-Service Vocational Teacher's Training Program.

Blended learning approaches are considered as the most viable for the delivery of training to remote areas and accessing learners at a mass level. Blended learning is a combination of different learning approaches to facilitate the learners’ needs. The National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) conducted an in-service vocational teachers’ training program through blended learning approaches in Pakistan. This study aimed to find the appropriate blend of face-to-face, online, and offline learning approaches for the training of in-service teachers in Pakistan. A mixed methods research approach was adopted. A survey collected data from 781 in-service vocational teachers who participated in training programs through blended learning approaches. The ANOVA test was applied to find the difference of the training participants’ attitude toward different modes of learning. It was found that trainees had more positive attitude toward a face-to-face learning approach than online and the online learning approach than offline learning. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with training participants, admission and placement officers, and principals. They also endorsed that face-to-face learning approaches must be given more weight than online, and the online approach should have more weight than the offline approach. This study has practical implications for technical education and vocational training (TVET) institutes in developing countries such as Pakistan to design blended learning approaches for the training of in-service vocational teachers. Future research may be conducted on the effectiveness of in-service vocational education teachers through blended learning.

The use of Internet, World Wide Web and Mobile Technologies revolutionized the provision of information and the facility for the user to take action on the information required. The use of internet enables users to manage placement process. This led to a unique web based placement management system grown specifically by the placements practitioner and the software programmer to become Training and Placement (TOP) system. TOP system is an application that can be accessed throughout the organization with proper login provided. This system can be used as an application for the Training and placement officers (TPO) of the college to collect the student information with regard to. Students logging should be able to transmit their information in the form of a Resume. In manual Training and Placement, all the work done by human intervention due to which there were maximum chances of errors.

Web - Based Placement Management System

The project is aimed at developing an application for the “`WEB BASED PLACEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM” of the college. The system is an application that can be accessed and effectively used throughout the organization with proper login enabled. This system can be used as an application for the Placement Officers in the college to manage the student information with regard to placement. Our project provides the facility of maintaining the details of the students. The web application can be accessed throughout the organization with proper login provided. The “placement management software” or system helps the students, company to register and communicate all the information in the portal.The users can easily get access to the portal and also the data can be retrieved easily within no time. In various colleges, training and placement officers have to manage the student’s profile and documents for their placements manually. The placement officers will collect the information from various companies who want to recruit the students and updates to the students from time to time. And also arranges the profile of students according to various streams. The placement officer will clearly notify the needs and requirements of the company. It was difficult to communicate the information with the “N” number of students together about the placement drives. So the web application was designed which was easy and efficient to communicate the information to the students in a manual way ,It reduces the manual work and consumes less paper work to reduce the time.
