Axial pull-out, bending and torque-rotation stiffness and capacity data and equations for underground torsional behavior are provided for utility pipelines using rubber gasket joints. Analytically predicted values are compared with the experimental data with satisfactory results. Axial pull-out for utility pipes occurs at 1.2 in. (30 mm) displacement. Metal-to-metal binding takes place at very small axial push-in or after 4 degrees bending rotation of the joint. Failure mechanisms are explained, and a modified joint which could eliminate high seismic stress buildup is outlined.
