Henri Coutard (1876-1950): A Pioneer of Fractionated Radiotherapy Regimens.

Henri Coutard was a prominent French roentgen therapist (radiation therapist). He was a pioneer physician and scientist who established the development of the "protracted-fractional method"of radiation dosing. He treated laryngeal cancer with super-voltage x-rays and also published data on five-year survival rates while his contemporary physicians indulged in treating cancer with radioactive sources. Due to his significant contribution regarding the use of fractionated dose regimens to treat cancer, in today's world most of the tumors are treated using the same principle which is in itself a great achievementin the field of radiation oncology.Due to his work, present-day radiotherapy practice is focused on therapeutic ratios to treat cancer.

Morris Young, pioneer physician.

This concise biography of Morris Young shows how he developed the medical services of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in the first three decades of the twentieth century, and ended his career working with Sir Alexander Fleming at St Mary's Hospital in London. Dr Edward Macgowan (1795–1860), a long-term pioneer physician in mid-nineteenth century Jerusalem: founder and director of the first modern hospital in the Holy Land

At the age of 46, Dr Edward Macgowan, by now a well-established physician, joined the ranks of the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews with the aim of establishing the first modern hospital in Palestine. For the first six months of 1842, Macgowan established his work among the Jerusalem population on a regular basis and managed to establish a close relationship with the Jewish community and some of its leaders in Jerusalem. On 12 December 1844, the Jews' Hospital was opened in Jerusalem and became a source of great pride for the missionaries. Edward Macgowan died in Jerusalem after 18 years of service and was buried in the Protestant cemetery in his beloved city.

Harry Benjamin and Psychiatrists

SUMMARY Harry Benjamin, MD, was a pioneer physician who founded the transgender field and coined the term “transsexual.” Benjamin drew criticism from some in the psychiatric community when he began treating transgendered people with cross-gender hormones and encouragement in their efforts in transitioning. By and large, psychiatrists of this time considered gender dysphoria as a manifestation of significant psychopathology and considered the treatment Benjamin was then prescribing as psychiatrically contraindicated. Rather than discouraging Benjamin, this response simply reinforced his feeling that psychiatry as a discipline lacked “common sense.” The author worked with Dr. Benjamin for 6 years, was to become his heir apparent, but then left the practice to undertake a psychiatric residency. Crawford W. Long first used ether as an anesthetic on March 30, 1842. This article examines factors in his education and practice that prompted his discovery. Included in the discussion are some of the circumstances that caused Long to delay publication of his experience with ether, as well as the impact of the “ether controversy” on his life.

Daniel Drake (1785-1852)

Approximately a year ago, I became particularly interested in Daniel Drake, pioneer physician of the Midwest, who was an important factor in establishing 2 medical schools in the Ohio River Valley. An editorial was prepared on Daniel Drake and was published inThe Journal, July 15, 1961. Scarcely was this finished when Dr. Horine's full-length biography appeared. The editorial, having been scheduled, was modified to include a reference to this biography. Not long after, Dr. Horine brought to our attention a number of errors in the essay which had been derived from "secondary sources." These were noted under "corrections" in the Sept. 2 issue ofThe Journal. The period for preparation of Horine's biography was 32 years. This is rather an extended period of literary research and composition, but the results seem well worth the efforts. Some impression of the magnitude of the job may be gained from the statement

Daniel Drake (1785-1852): Pioneer Physician of the Midwest

A biography thirty-two years in preparation is likely to contain all the available information about the subject. Where the author is as thorough and meticulous as Emmet Field Horine, this becomes more than likely. On this score one can have nothing but the highest admiration and praise for this careful chronicle of the life of one of America's great physicians. Horine gathered the bulk of the material for his book when he served as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, a post analogous to that held by Daniel Drake in that very school a century before. For the final six years of his tenure Horine also was Chief of the Medical History Section at that University.
