Mega infrastructure projects and their contribution to sustainable development: the case of the Athens Metro

This paper examines the critical role of Mega Infrastructure Projects in sustainable urban and peripheral development by presenting a Sustainable Infrastructure Serum Analysis supported by primary field research. In the Athens Metro case study, we examined the project's impact on sustainable development by analysing the opinions of the project's users. As a result, the Athens Metro serves as a case study to help us better understand sustainable infrastructure as a framework for green growth from the standpoint of society. The three pillars of sustainable development are inextricably linked. This study focuses on the social comprehension and acceptance of a Mega Infrastructure Project effects. We attempt to demonstrate the interdependence of the three pillars of sustainable development through public opinion responses to our research by developing a statistical model fed by public responses to a prototype questionnaire that we developed to support our research objectives. The study's findings highlighted the project's social acceptability and necessity by establishing a direct positive correlation between sustainability, society, the economy, and the environment from the standpoint of society.

Adapting Methods and Tools for Participatory Heritage-Based Tourism Planning to Embrace the Four Pillars of Sustainability

Sustainable cultural tourism, understood as heritage-based tourism, can support inclusive and sustainable development, especially in remote or peripheral areas. While participatory processes are mandatory, they are not sufficient to ensure sustainable cultural tourism planning. For the latter, cultural tourism must embrace the four pillars of sustainable development: focusing on economic, cultural, environmental, and social sustainability. Nevertheless, a comprehensive methodology that addresses all the aspects of sustainable planning at each stage of the process through inclusive and diverse participation of local communities is still missing. The paper introduces a specific participatory methodology for cultural tourism developed and tested in eight case studies across Europe and beyond and analyzes how the devised participatory process and tools guarantee proper incorporation of the different pillars for sustainable development at each stage. The methodology and tools presented are based on three replicable steps that aim to enhance cultural tourism in a sustainable, diverse, inclusive, and innovative way. The paper specifically focuses on three activities designed for the participatory workshops: the co-mapping exercise, the Action Co-creation, and an adapted Business Model Canvas, providing an analysis of how those contribute to an innovative participatory process, constantly considering the four pillars of sustainable development.

Rebuilding Port Infrastructure Heritage in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Transforming port infrastructure to meet the increasing demands of urbanization and modernization has been a contentious topic for decades, with push and pull between preserving historic structures and addressing sustainability, economic feasibility and tourism (Babalis 2018). This article takes an interdisciplinary view of these debates by exploring how restoring port infrastructure heritage can align key pillars of sustainable development: a strong local economy, water and sanitation, and social and cultural identity. An ongoing restoration project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, serves as a case study of integrative approaches and strategic objectives implemented by project developers and government stakeholders. The project addresses the challenge of rebuilding sustainable and resilient port infrastructure while still preserving heritage and making room for modern urban developments. The approach presented potentially creates new arenas for water and heritage management in spaces that have experienced rapid urban change and commercial exploitation in ways that have affected historic port infrastructure and human well-being.

Social and economic development from an integrated sustainability perspective: analysing the interaction of social capital, income level, and income inequality in China

ABSTRACT This study aims to explore bilateral interactions of social and economic pillars of sustainability in China to reveal if they are synergistic or trade-off. To this end, this research uses the bootstrap method for panel data and an Ordinary Quantile Regression model to estimate the effects of social capital proxies including political identity, family relationship network and trust on economic condition proxy, household income, in different quantiles of Chinese households. This study uses data based on microsurvey data from the China Family Tracking Survey (CFPS) conducted by the China Social Science Research Center of Peking University in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The results show that social capital positively affects economic status implying the synergistic impact of social development on economic pillars of sustainable development. Moreover, further examination reveals that the resulted improvement in economic status is distributed equally among different quantiles of Chinese households. This result implies that the reflective effect of economic development on social pillar is synergistic. Overall, these findings accept the synergistic interactions between social and economic pillars of sustainability which is consistent with the integrated sustainability perspective. These findings suggest that policymakers in both the social and economic sectors to consider the consequences of their own plans and strategies for the other sectors.

Assessment of sustainable development status of micro and small enterprises in Debre Berhan town, central Ethiopia

AbstractThis study investigates the sustainable development status of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Debre Berhan town in five major manufacturing sub‐sectors (textile and garment, agro‐processing, woodwork, food processing and beverage and metal works and engineering). The sustainable development status of the selected MSEs was evaluated using 16 indicators for the three pillars of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental). The results showed that economic sustainability was at a ‘low’ level, while social and environmental sustainability and the aggregate index were at ‘moderate’ levels. Therefore, integrated support is required to overcome the identified challenges MSEs face to achieve sustainable development.

Learning from Tradition for Future: Green Building in Kano State, Nigeria

Green building can be considered as a building design through a method that is environmentally friendly in both construction, usage and energy consumption. Culture is yet to be included into the sustainable development pillars making it the fourth pillar of sustainability after social, economic and environmental aspects. Traditional Architecture can be regarded as beliefs, customs, or ways of life (culture) in building construction that have existed for a long period and involve the art of designing, planning, and traditional building style. These traditional buildings were copied and used in contemporary buildings in Kano state, Nigeria. Therefore, most of the contemporary building design and structure has their roots in a traditional building. Nigeria’s traditional buildings across the country were affected by climate and landform all over the geographical zones, which were recognised to demonstrate a detailed solution to the building’s culture, socio-economic, local technology and climatic condition of the environment. This study compares the past and the current building style based on the façade or floor-plan pictures, and green or sustainable building using relevant kinds of literature of Hausa traditional building around Kano state. It is concluded that Hausa traditional architecture should not be forgotten, rather it should be encouraged and improved based on green sustainable features, traditions and enhance the durability of the building materials. It is recommended that culture should be include into the pillars of sustainability so as to make sustainability complete especially in the field of building construction. Lastly, further research is recommended in order to explore ways of improving the quality of the local building materials and the methods used during the construction process.

The Role of Innovation Management System ISO 56002 Standard in the Competitive Edge toward Sustainability

In today’s current business world, innovation management has discovered a significant competitive edge. ISO 56002:2019 Innovation Management System is a key to standing out from the competition with this newest international standard. The ISO 56002:2019 guiding framework assists businesses in improving their capacity to manage innovation activities, adapt to volatility, enhance consumer satisfaction, involve and motivate staff, and boost corporate reputation and revenue. The purpose of this paper is to describe and introduce the ISO 56002 standard as the landscape of providing an effective innovation management system to achieve sustainable development, as well as their relationship. As a result, this research investigates a theoretical method to show the link between these three notions. According to the findings of the study, companies should be worried about implementing the new ISO 56002 standard, especially if they already have the ISO9001 quality management system in place, to accelerate the innovation process. Organizations must also have a robust innovation system to implement the pillars of sustainable development.

During the thirty years of the country’s independence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan developed several foreign policy concepts. The first document, which established the well-known Kazakh multi-vector approach, appeared in 1995. By that time, Kazakhstan had established constructive cooperation not only with the world major actors (Russia, China, US) and international organizations (EU, NATO, OIC), but also with the neighbors in the Central Asian region. In 1995, the Kazakh leadership took action to remove the Soviet nuclear weapons from its territory. All of the above steps demonstrated that Kazakhstan is a reliable and predictable foreign policy partner, as well as a responsible member of the international community. In 2000, 2005 and 2014, the foreign policy concepts were amended. The necessary amendments were prompted both by domestic developments and the situation in the international arena. In 2019, the Foreign Policy Concept 2020–2030 was adopted. This document was not only part of the election program of the President C.- J. C. Tokayev, it was a concept confirming the continuity of the multi-vector and balanced foreign policy of the “new” and “listening” Kazakhstan. Additionally in this document, Kazakhstan openly declared its intention to secure the status of the “leading state in the region”. Therefore, Kazakhstan’s relations with other countries of Central Asia acquired a strategic character. The Republic of Kazakhstan also called for expansion of multilateral dialogue and cooperation in the region, for strengthening the existing formats of interaction between the Central Asian countries and external partners. The current Foreign Policy Concept is not only a guide to action for Kazakhstan itself, but it also sends clear signals to foreign partners regarding the limits of what is acceptable in relations with the Republic of Kazakhstan. This message seems important in today’s turbulent system of international relations, when new pillars of sustainable development are needed not only for individual countries, but for the entire world.

the article shows that there are many definitions of sustainable tourism development, most of them represent the idea that there are three interdependent pillars of sustainable development: environmental, economic and social. Within the framework of sustainable development, the interdependence of the three pillars is emphasized by their potential for mutual reinforcement, but also competition with each other. Conceptual clarity, in terms of the intersection of economic, environmental and social spheres, makes it possible to determine the impact of consumption and production on the sustainable development of tourism. The participation and awareness of all stakeholders determine whether future progress towards sustainable tourism development can be achieved and approves: tourism planning, which should be considered from a rational and technical point of view (professionalism); compliance with the characteristics of each holiday destination, the needs and wishes of people who live in the area, market forces, the availability of labor resources and financing; position and place in the world market. The development of sustainable tourism in any territory cannot be just a matter of matching the product offer to tourist needs, it is very important to take into account the opinion of local residents.

Road safety and sustainability performance: A cross-country analysis

In this paper, we study the impact of road safety on sustainability performance in the OECD area. Road safety is proxied by the severity of road accidents, whereas the sustainability performance of each country is captured by its sustainability score. Our dataset covers the period 2000-2021 and consists of 35 OECD countries. The employed panel data analysis unveils a statistically significant negative relationship between the number of severe road crashes and sustainability score. In particular, a unit decrease in the number of deaths per one million inhabitants due to road crashes leads to a half unit increase in the overall sustainability score of a country. Therefore, policy makers should undertake measures that improve the efficiency of the transport system since this translates in higher sustainability performance. Indeed, less severe road crashes do have a positive impact on the economy, the society and the environment, thus contributing to all pillars of sustainable development.

The Economic Prospects of Sustainable Labour Migration and the Need for a Legal Framework in Nigeria

Sustainable development has been a germane concept to international policy since the year 1992. The concept of Sustainable development also serves as a springboard for understanding labour migration as a phenomenon for the economic viability and social sustainability of developing and developed nations. This is because labour migration is a phenomenon that is rooted within the strata of socio-political sustainability, one of the recognized pillars of sustainable development. From the standpoint of migration history in Nigeria, migration has persisted internally in the form of rural-urban migration driven by varying socio-economic factors and externally, in the form of labour migration with a significant number of young Nigerians, many of whom are not deterred by the risks associated with travelling to Europe via unsafe paths, exploring some of these paths. Nigerian youths consisting of individuals aged between 15-35 years also comprise the largest population of migrants from the Global South seeking opportunities in other countries outside Europe. The ILO, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs-Statistical Division and the International Organization for Migration in development circles have advanced the discourse of labour migration whilst prompting countries to mainstream strategies that would allow the benefits of labour migration to be fully maximized. An ethical legal framework in sending countries (being developing countries in most cases, and in this instance referring to Nigeria) and receiving countries (being developed countries in most cases and in this instance referring to countries in Europe). It is within this framework that the economic prospects of labour migration can be properly reaped. In establishing a legal framework for Nigeria, it is important to consider what the country stands to lose with sustained outflow of youths and professionals required for nation building to Europe and sectors in Europe, this consideration would guide the concessions that can be made in the design of Bilateral Labour Agreements between Nigeria and Sending countries. The researcher of this work ultimately contemplates the realization of a legal framework in the form of a legislation that will strongly define labour migration in Nigeria, which would also be a consolidation of prior efforts channeled towards establishing a labour migration policy for Nigeria. The Research methodology utilized in this work is a combination of the Qualitative Legal Research and Analytical Legal Research. This is because the work relied mainly upon non-numerical data sources relative to the topic at hand and after evaluating these sources, put forward a subjective view.

Comparison of courier companies in Slovakia in the context of sustainable development

The sustainable development of the company can be explained as the process of managing the organization about concerning various aspects - economic, social, and environmental. Although the original idea was used almost exclusively in connection with the environment and natural resources, today the word sustainability is used in a wide range of fields and activities. Businesses should not focus only on profit, but on all pillars of sustainable development to ensure the ethical, rational, and efficient execution of all business processes and activities. The paper aims to point out the integration of the concept of sustainable development into the strategy of courier companies. Increasing rates of urbanization and the continuous development of e-commerce are increasing the pressure on last-mile delivery in urban areas. With the increase in demand for home delivery, to parcel lockers or delivery points, the question arises of how to implement these processes efficiently and more sustainably. The paper focuses at comparing selected courier companies - Packeta, DPD, SPS, DHL and Slovenská pošta, operating in the Slovak Republic and identifying the elements and activities they implement in connection with the integration of sustainable development.

Nexus Among Public Health Expenditure, Environmental Pollution, Governance and Health Status: Empirical Perspective from Nigeria

The study, empirically examines the nexus among public health expenditure (PHE), environmental pollution, governance (QoG) and health status in Nigeria using annual time series data spanning from 1981-2020. Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach and two stage least square (2SLS) techniques were utilized. Data on PHE, environmental pollution captured by CO2 emission and governance (QoG) measured by corruption perception index (CPI) were regressed on infant mortality rate (IMR) and under five mortality rates (U5MR) as measures for health status. Generally, there is evidence of long-run association between the various variables in the respective model specification. The results reveal (i) a negative and significant effect of PHE on both health status, implying that a 1% increase in PHE reduces IMR and U5MR by 0.03%; (ii) a significant and negative effect of CO2 emissions on health status, which imply that a 1% increase in CO2 emissions will reduce U5MR and IMR respectively by approximately 0.05%. (iii) QoG measured by CPI has a negative though statistically insignificant effect on health status, showing that a percent increase in CPI approximately decreases IMR and U5MR by 0.03%, (iv) a negative and significant effect of GDP per capita on health status which imply that economic growth is associated with an improvement in the health status of the population. Here a percent increase in per capita income reduces IMR and U5MR by 0.43 and 0.49 percentage point respectively. The study recommends that there is need for policymakers in developing countries like Nigeria to aggressively deploy fiscal policy to boost allocations on public health expenditure and ensure progress across all four pillars of sustainable development through good governance devoid of corruption in term of misallocation of public resources, poor management and better institutions as these are essential for both individual and societal well-being..

Exploring Residents’ Perceptions towards Tourism Development—A Case Study of the Adjara Mountain Area

Tourism development involves both positive and negative impacts on economic, social and natural environments, which represent essential pillars for sustainable development. It is in this context that the present research was conducted in the Adjara Mountain area of Georgia aiming to identify residents’ perception towards tourism development. An online survey was conducted among 620 residents. The data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics and principal component analysis. As such, the results of the principal component analysis led to a two-factor solution: “positive effects” and “negative effects”. Older and more educated respondents perceived the impacts of tourism development more positively compared to the younger group and to the less educated one. A statistically significant difference was found between females and males regarding their perception of the positive impacts of tourism development. The study represents a first step in investigating the residents’ perception towards tourism development in the Adjara Mountain region, and the results could constitute a starting point for future tourism strategies in the area.

Coastal ecosystem service in response to past and future land use and land cover change dynamics in the Yangtze river estuary

Climate change and anthropogenic activities are increasingly threatening estuarine and coastal zones. These effects lead to complex positive and negative feedback among sustainable development pillars of human, society, economy and environment according to the integrated sustainability perspective. Only limited studies have calculated comprehensive impact assessments of land conversions between land and sea, invasive species expansion, and inundation impacts on natural wetlands under future scenarios. To fill-in this research gap, this study aims to conduct a long-term temporal analysis (1960–2015) of land use and land cover change (LULC), and future ecosystem service value (ESV) loss for intertidal wetlands predicted in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE). The results show that, over recent decades, impervious constructed areas and Spartina alterniflora-covered saltmarsh have increased to 10.7% and 2.61%, respectively, whereas native species saltmarshes and tidal flats have decreased to 0.04% and 1.1%, respectively. The total ESV increased significantly during 1960–2000 but significantly declined during 2000–2015. The highest total ESV was US$ 3.8 billion in 2010, considering the approximate contributions of natural and artificial wetlands. Similarly, the ESV of the S. alterniflora saltmarshes reached US$ 0.7 billion in 2015. The total intertidal wetlands area could decrease to 8071–8248/ha by 2100. The total ESV of intertidal wetland ecosystems would decrease by approximately one billion dollars between 2015 and 2050. An enhanced understanding of the economic impacts regarding coastal management, restoration, and conservation is of profound importance for improving coastal resilience, sustainable development, and adaptation of coastal societies to climate change in the Yangtze River Estuary.

IMPLICATION OF IMPLEMENTATION OF ”SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS” ON ENVIRONMENTAL SECURITY IN ROMANIA

Climate change is affecting the environment and humanity globally by increasing the average surface temperature, extreme weather events, changing rainfall patterns, rising sea levels and acidification of the oceans. Climate change is now having an impact on all countries on every continent, disrupting national economies and people's livelihoods as resources, food and water become scarcer. To address these risks and threats to security and even the existence of life, in 2015, the United Nations General Assembly (UN) in New York adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This document aims, through its 17 objectives, a better future for humanity, in response to the identified threats, being structured on three pillars of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. The 2030 Agenda was adopted and subsequently implemented by the European Union, through the Communication "Next Steps for a Sustainable European Future" of November 22, 2016 and by Romania, through the "National Strategy for the Sustainable Development of Romania 2030" of November 9, 2018.

University 4.0 Sustainable Development in the Way of Society 5.0

Universities can contribute to economic and sustainable development (SD) in a variety of ways, such as mediating social debates, educating citizens on scientific and technical issues, fostering communication among various agents (politicians, businesspeople, higher education institutions’ managers, and citizens), and advancing socioeconomic progress. By teaching the current and next generations of decision-makers, universities have a role in “shaping the ideals of society”. Numerous publications address the topic of sustainable development, but they do so from the standpoint of how its responsibilities are implemented and how students are prepared and aware of it. This manuscript addresses this vacuum by looking at how students assess university activities and specific pillars of sustainable development, which is an unique approach. The investigation used the CAWI questionnaire. The sample consists of 115 Pakistani respondents, and information was gathered between February and August of 2022. The research built a logistic regression model. Our research’s findings and their analysis revealed that University 4.0s should take initiatives for sustainable development, and that these issues are top priorities for them. The analysis revealed that Society 5.0 is active in University 4.0s’ sustainable development initiatives, and that these initiatives are vital for Society 5.0.

Implementing the Council of Europe Landscape Convention: The Deûle Park, Reawakening of a Landscape

This paper is a study of a representative example of the application of the Council of Europe Landscape Convention (CEP), with a project that is emblematic of the implementation of the CEP as the first winner of the Council of Europe's landscape award in 2009. It shows how the principles of that international treaty ratified by France and enshrined in national law was able to inspire public plans and policies for the reconstruction of landscapes that met the objectives of the four sustainable development pillars of culture, environment, society, and economy. This example demonstrates that public policies can bring positive results in those fields and generate not only quality public space but also significant improvement in the quality of life by ensuring access to the fundamental good of landscape while preserving access to another fundamental good of drinking water. The paper starts with a short history of the Landscape Convention, then brie fly explores its main premises and values, before providing the concrete example of the Deûle Park or Parc de la Deûle located within the Lille metropolitan area, in the North of France.

Analysis of Sustainable Development Progress in the State of Sabah, Malaysia

Development is a process of creating a prosperous society in terms of its economic, social, political and environmental quality. The government plays a crucial role in realising sustainable development by transforming the state and district economies and balancing socioeconomic income. Issues on Sabah’s development have long been debated. The extent of the interest among relevant parties regarding Sabah’s development and how the government ‘tolerates’ ensuring that Sabah is developing at the same pace as other states must be examined crucially. This research aims to investigate the condition of Sabah based on three main pillars of sustainable development: economics, social and environment. The studies only adapted descriptive analysis geared by a questionnaire distributed only to the local Sabahan. Overall, we received 30 respondents, and the outcomes are mixed. Overall, the majority of Sabahan is satisfied with the growth achieved by Sabah; however, they feel pressured by the cost of living and agree that there are still huge poverty issues in this state. Meanwhile, in environmental quality, the local Sabahan are satisfied with the government's approach to maintaining the environment despite huge development in major cities such as Kota Kinabalu. These studies could give meaningful insight to the policymakers in ensuring the development of Sabah is according to the United Nation’s sustainable development policy.

Reconstruction of Historic Monuments—A Dual Approach

The proper maintenance of historical monuments and their use is one of the pillars of sustainable development. Over the years, historic architectural buildings have undergone numerous changes resulting from reconstruction, expansion, or damage caused both by natural and other disasters. Therefore, their contemporary appearance is the result of these changes. Thanks to the documentation of their transformations, one has the opportunity to get to know their history. Currently, thanks to advanced technology, it is becoming easier and easier to document various historical monuments. However, the method of their documentation, especially the possibility of their reconstruction and the creation of 3D models depends mostly on the data resources at one’s disposal. This article compares two extreme methods of recreating an architectural object that has undergone some changes throughout history. One of the methods is to reconstruct the object on the basis of a photograph using geometrical rules and computer aid, while the other is based on laser scanning. Due to the fact that the same object is being reconstructed by means of both methods, it is possible to evaluate and compare the applied methods and estimate their accuracy, as well as to draw conclusions about the transformations of the reconstructed object over the years.
