ABSTRACT This paper presents an approach for predicting the impact of tunnel construction on piles considering non-linear soil-pile-tunnel interaction with Pasternak’s two-parameter model. Two-Stage Analysis Method (TSAM) has been implemented and user-friendly and cost effective MATLAB code has been developed to solve the governing differential equations using finite difference method. Governing differential equation for friction piles with fixity at top and unconstrianed at toe has been developed, which represents piles under flyovers. Critical bending moment of the pile develops at pile cap junction and at tunnel centreline depth. Non-linear soil caused an increased pile deflection compared to linear analysis, due to reduction of soil stiffnesses. Validation of output with various published case studies and instrumentation data obtained from the Kolkata East-West Metro Project, India, showed good agreement of the results. Thus, an accurate and cost-effective solution has been developed for a non-linear tunnel-soil-pile interaction condition, which is easy to handle.
