Responses of Phytoplankton Communities to Internal Waves in Oligotrophic Oceans

AbstractUnderstanding the potential impacts of internal waves on phytoplankton communities in oligotrophic oceans remains an important research challenge. In this study, we elucidated the impact of internal waves on phytoplankton communities through a comprehensive 154‐hr time‐series of observations in the South China Sea (SCS). We identified distinctive variations in phytoplankton pigment biomass and composition across the upper, middle, and lower layers of the euphotic zone, which we attributed to the perturbations triggered by internal waves. Phytoplankton other than Prochlorococcus in the lower, nutrient‐replete layer likely benefitted from allochthonous nutrients introduced by internal waves, but their growth rates were constrained by light limitation, and their pigment biomass was held in check by microzooplankton grazing. In contrast, in the upper, nutrient‐depleted layer, the relative abundance of Prochlorococcus increased, likely because of the ammonium regenerated by zooplankton. The middle layer, characterized as the deep chlorophyll maximum layer, exhibited a dynamic equilibrium characterized by nutrient and light co‐limitation. This equilibrium resulted in high nitrate assimilation and growth by phytoplankton. The balancing of those rates by significant grazing losses maintained total chlorophyll a concentrations at a high level. Based on these findings, we proposed a three‐layer euphotic zone structure characterized by distinct physiological conditions, nutrient‐light dynamics, grazing pressure, and phytoplankton responses to internal waves. This three‐layer paradigm elucidated the intricate interplay between internal waves and phytoplankton communities and provided insights into the mechanisms that govern primary production and carbon cycling in oligotrophic oceanic ecosystems.

Impact of atmospheric dry deposition of nutrients on phytoplankton pigment composition and primary production in the coastal Bay of Bengal.

Atmospheric deposition of pollutants decreases pH and increases the nutrient concentration in the surface water. To examine its impact on coastal phytoplankton composition and primary production, monthly atmospheric aerosol samples were mixed with coastal waters in the microcosm experiments. These experiments suggested that the biomass of Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae and Chlorophyceae were increased and primary production of the coastal waters increased by 3 to 19% due to the addition of aeolian nutrients. The increase in primary production displayed significant relation with a concentration of sulphate and nitrate in the atmospheric aerosols suggesting that both decreases in pH and fertilization enhanced primary production. The impact of acidification on primary production was found to be 22%, whereas 78% was contributed by the nutrient increase. The atmospheric pollution is increasing rapidly over the northern Indian Ocean since past two decades due to rapid industrialization. Hence, it is suggested that the impact of atmospheric pollution on the coastal ecosystem must be included in the numerical models to predict possible changes in the coastal ecosystem due to climate change.

Modeling surface ocean phytoplankton pigments from hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance on global scales

Phytoplankton community composition impacts food webs, climate, and fisheries on regional and global scales, and can be assessed at coarse taxonomic resolution from biomarker pigments measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Presently, satellite ocean color provides unprecedented coverage of the global surface ocean and offers reliable estimates of bulk biological properties; however, existing multispectral sensors have limited ability to provide information about phytoplankton community composition. Satellite ocean color at hyperspectral resolution (e.g., NASA's upcoming Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem sensor, PACE) is expected to improve estimates of phytoplankton community composition from space. Phytoplankton impact ocean color via contributions to absorption and fluorescence (through phytoplankton pigments) and scattering, especially on narrow spectral scales (5–100 nm). Here, a global open ocean dataset of concurrent HPLC pigments and hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance (Rrs(λ)) observations is used to model phytoplankton pigment composition from optical data. Phytoplankton pigments are reconstructed from Rrs(λ) using optimized principal components regression modeling. This work demonstrates that thirteen phytoplankton pigments, representing five phytoplankton pigment groups (e.g., diatoms, dinoflagellates, haptophytes, green algae, and cyanobacteria), can be modeled from hyperspectral Rrs(λ). Spectral information needed to model each phytoplankton pigment concentration is found throughout the entire visible spectrum and the model results are best at high spectral resolution (≤5 nm). The resulting model recreates observed relationships among pigment concentrations, providing support for the designation of five pigment-based phytoplankton groups for the global open ocean. This work represents a step toward developing robust, global spectral models for phytoplankton pigment composition. However, more high-quality data from a wide range of ecosystems and environments are still needed to achieve this goal.

Phytoplankton Phenology in the Coastal Zone of Cyprus, Based on Remote Sensing and In Situ Observations

Alterations in phytoplankton biomass, community structure and timing of their growth (phenology), are directly implicated in the carbon cycle and energy transfer to higher trophic levels of the marine food web. Due to the lack of long-term in situ datasets, there is very little information on phytoplankton seasonal succession in Cyprus (eastern Mediterranean Sea). On the other hand, satellite-derived measurements of ocean colour can only provide long-term time series of chlorophyll (an index of phytoplankton biomass) up to the first optical depth (surface waters). The coupling of both means of observations is essential for understanding phytoplankton dynamics and their response to environmental change. Here, we use 23 years of remotely sensed, regionally tuned ocean-colour observations, along with a unique time series of in situ phytoplankton pigment composition data, collected in coastal waters of Cyprus during 2016. The satellite observations show an initiation of phytoplankton growth period in November, a peak in February and termination in April, with an overall mean duration of ~4 months. An in-depth exploration of in situ total Chl-a concentration and phytoplankton pigments revealed that pico- and nano-plankton cells dominated the phytoplankton community. The growth peak in February was dominated by nanophytoplankton and potentially larger diatoms (pigments of 19’ hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin and fucoxanthin, respectively), in the 0–20 m layer. The highest total Chl-a concentration was recorded at a station off Akrotiri peninsula in the south, where strong coastal upwelling has been reported. Another station in the southern part, located next to a fish farm, showed a higher contribution of picophytoplankton during the most oligotrophic period (summer). Our results highlight the importance of using available in situ data coupled to ocean-colour remote sensing, for monitoring marine ecosystems in areas with limited in situ data availability.

Phytoplankton pigment composition was evaluated during the pre-cyclone phase (PRCP) and post-cyclone phase (POCP) of tropical cyclone Fani in the coastal waters of the northwestern Bay of Bengal. The chromatographic analysis revealed higher pigment diversity and an increase in individual pigment concentration during POCP. Chlorophyll–a (chl–a) was the dominant pigment during PRCP and POCP, followed by fucoxanthin. However, chl–a and fucoxanthin concentrations increased 18- and 14-folds, respectively, during the POCP, signifying Bacillariophyta bloom. Complementing microscopy confirmed the dominance of the toxic Bacillariophyta species Pseudo-nitzschia pungens (reaching 5.47 × 104 cells l−1) during the POCP. The cyclone-induced nutrient recharge of the ambient medium could have promoted phytoplankton growth, causing the reappearance of diatom bloom during the later phase of the pre-southwest monsoon. Small-sized Prymnesiophyta and Cryptophyta were not detected microscopically; however, they were identified by chromatographic analysis through pigment markers during POCP.

Linking phytoplankton absorption to community composition in Chinese marginal seas

Phytoplankton pigments significantly affect photosynthesis and play a crucial role in regulating marine ecological and biogeochemical processes. Assessment of phytoplankton pigments through optical means is desirable as it may be extended to satellite remote sensing. Here, using an extensive data set of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) phytoplankton pigment concentrations and phytoplankton absorption spectra (aph(λ)) collected through five cruise surveys of the Chinese marginal seas during 2016 and 2017, we explore the potentials of using aph(λ) to estimate twenty pigments. Specifically, the first and second derivatives of aph(λ) are used to construct an aph(λ) - pigment model. The validation of the aph(λ)-derived pigment classes, specific to individual phytoplankton community and size groups, shows a generally satisfactory model performance. Additionally, hierarchical cluster analysis also exhibits high similarity within the classification results based on the measured and modeled pigments, where only two pigments were decided into different clusters. Although still preliminary in nature, this proof-of-concept study for the Chinese marginal seas shows the potentials of using satellite remote sensing to assess phytoplankton pigment composition once hyperspectral satellite data are available and aph(λ) inversion algorithms are developed and validated.

A baseline investigation of phytoplankton pigment composition in contrasting coastal ecosystems of north-western Bay of Bengal

A baseline investigation of the chromatographic characterization of phytoplankton pigments with complementing microscopy was conducted in Mahanadi estuary, Chilika lagoon, and coastal waters off Gopalpur along the east coast of India. Marker pigments specific to different phytoplankton groups have been discerned in these contrasting coastal ecosystems. A total of 16 phytoplankton pigments were identified. Irrespective of seasons, Chilika lagoon was characterized by a high concentration of zeaxanthin, indicating the predominance of picocyanobacteria. Zeaxanthin and fucoxanthin were the major diagnostic pigments in Mahanadi estuary during monsoon and other seasons, respectively. In coastal waters off Gopalpur, algal blooms resulted in a higher concentration of fucoxanthin during pre-monsoon and monsoon season. The pigment ratios were comparatively higher for Chilika lagoon than for Mahanadi estuary and off Gopalpur, irrespective of seasons. The present study highlights the advantages of the chromatography technique in identifying small-sized phytoplankton in coastal ecosystems in comparison to conventional microscopy.

Coastal Phytoplankton Pigments Composition in Three Tropical Estuaries of Indonesia

In this study, the composition and distribution of phytoplankton pigments and its relation to nutrients and light was investigated, and an elaboration of using it as a proxy for phytoplankton group composition followed, in different nutrient-level tropical bays of Indonesia. Phytoplankton pigment analysis by using High Performance Liquid Chromatographer (HPLC) resulted in a set of pigments of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), chlorophyll-b (Chl-b), chlorophyll-c (Chl-c), lutein, zeaxanthin, fucoxanthin, peridinin, diadinoxanthin, and ß-carotene. Linear multi regression and multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) showed that algae pigments correlate positively with nutrients and are not significantly correlated with underwater light and water transparency, suggesting important roles of nutrients for phytoplankton development in tropical estuaries. There were differences in total algae pigment concentration between bays (p < 0.005), showing that the eutrophic system of Jakarta Bay was the highest (mean of 10.55 μg L−1), Lampung Bay was the second highest (mean of 3.37 μg L−1), and the lowest were the oligotrophic waters of Semangka Bay (mean of 0.80 μg L−1). At all bays studied, high nutrient sites, which were located in the river mouths and inner part of the bay, were always characterized by high phytoplankton pigment concentration. Pigment composition had a high correlation with phytoplankton composition: diatoms with fucoxanthin, dinoflagellates with peridinin and Chl-c, and Chlorophyceae with Chl-b and lutein. This conformity suggests that algae pigments can be used as a biomarker for phytoplankton group determination along with microscopic species identification.

Pigment composition of phytoplankton and its long-term dynamics in reservoirs of the Upper Volga

According to field observations during 1995–2005 and 2012–2016, the pigment composition of phytoplankton in the Upper Volga reservoirs is given. With an average Chl a content of 13,1±1,4 to 52,5±2,7 μg/L in the Ivankovo reservoir and from 4,1±0,9 to 27,5±2,5 μg/L in the Uglich reservoir, an increase in Chl a was noted after an abnormally hot 2010. The content of Chl a in the Ivankovo reservoir retaining eutrophic status does not go beyond the limits of long-term fluctuations. In the Uglich reservoir, an increase in the absolute and relative amount of Chl a was revealed, indicating the transition of the reservoir to the eutrophic category.

Variation in phytoplankton pigment composition in relation to mixing conditions in temperate South-Central Chilean lakes

Thermal lake properties are sensitive to changes in windiness and precipitation, and affect the physical and chemical properties of the water column, which in turn control phytoplankton dynamics and primary production. We assessed the use of phytoplankton pigment profiling as a potential indicator of stratification conditions in temperate lakes in South-Central Chile. Spring and early summer phytoplankton pigment profiles and the physical and chemical limnology were analyzed in 43 lakes ranging in size, depth, altitude and catchment characteristics. Eleven lakes were sampled during both seasons. Variation in pigment composition between lakes was primarily related to stratification conditions and mixed layer light availability at the time of sampling. The dinoflagellate marker pigment peridinin was more abundant in more deeply mixed lakes with a lower mean irradiance, while chlorophyte pigments (chlorophyll b, lutein) tended to be higher in shallow (high-light) epilimnia. Diatom and chrysophyte pigments (fucoxanthin) dominated under less thermally stable and more variable light conditions. Cyanobacteria pigments (zeaxanthin), probably derived from picocyanobacteria, were relatively more abundant in very transparent, low productive lakes. Lakes in close vicinity of active volcanoes were enriched in silica and PO4-P and characterised by elevated chlorophyte marker pigments. Within strongly stratified lakes, in which the euphotic zone extended into the hypolimnion, cryptophyte pigments (alloxanthin) characterized the deep chlorophyll maxima while the epilimnion was consistently enriched with the photoprotective xanthophyll-cycle pigment violaxanthin. We conclude that major algal groups, represented by pigment biomarkers, are largely driven by changes in lake water column stratification and related mixed layer light availability as well as nutrient concentrations in temperate Chilean freshwater lakes.

Glucose as a Potential Chemical Marker for Ice Nucleating Activity in Arctic Seawater and Melt Pond Samples.

Recent studies pointed to a high ice nucleating activity (INA) in the Arctic sea surface microlayer (SML). However, related chemical information is still sparse. In the present study, INA and free glucose concentrations were quantified in Arctic SML and bulk water samples from the marginal ice zone, the ice-free ocean, melt ponds, and open waters within the ice pack. T50 (defining INA) ranged from -17.4 to -26.8 °C. Glucose concentrations varied from 0.6 to 51 μg/L with highest values in the SML from the marginal ice zone and melt ponds (median 16.3 and 13.5 μg/L) and lower values in the SML from the ice pack and the ice-free ocean (median 3.9 and 4.0 μg/L). Enrichment factors between the SML and the bulk ranged from 0.4 to 17. A positive correlation was observed between free glucose concentration and INA in Arctic water samples (T50(°C) = (-25.6 ± 0.6) + (0.15 ± 0.04)·Glucose(μg/L), RP = 0.66, n = 74). Clustering water samples based on phytoplankton pigment composition resulted in robust but different correlations within the four clusters (RP between 0.67 and 0.96), indicating a strong link to phytoplankton-related processes. Since glucose did not show significant INA itself, free glucose may serve as a potential tracer for INA in Arctic water samples.

Linking phytoplankton pigment composition and optical properties: A framework for developing remote-sensing metrics for monitoring cyanobacteria

This study has been performed in the framework of a research program aiming to develop a low-cost aerial sensor for the monitoring of cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems that could be used for early detection. Several empirical and mechanistic remote-sensing tools have been already developed and tested at large scales and have proven useful in monitoring cyanobacterial blooms. However, the effectiveness of these tools for early detection is hard to assess because such work requires the detection of low concentrations of characteristic pigments amid complex ecosystems exhibiting several confounding factors (turbidity, blooms of other species, etc.). We developed a framework for performing high-throughput measurements of the absorbance and reflectance of small volumes (∼ = 20 mL) of controlled mixtures of phytoplankton species and studied the potential of this framework to validate remote-sensing proxies of cyanobacteria concentration. The absorption and reflectance spectra of single and multiple cultures carried a specific signal that allowed for the quantitative analysis of culture mixes. This specific signal was shown to be related to known pigment absorbance spectra. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a and -b, phycocyanin and phycoerythrin could be obtained from direct absorbance measurements and were correlated with the concentration obtained after pigment extraction (R2 ≥ 0.96 for all pigments). A systematic test of every possible two-band and three-band normalized difference between optical indices was then performed, and the coincidental correlation with chlorophyll-b (absent in cyanobacteria) was used as an indicator of non-specificity. Two-band indices were shown to suffer from non-specificity issues and could not yield strong and specific relationships with phycocyanin or phycoerythrin (maximum R2 < 0.5). On the other hand, the three-band modified normalized difference indices yielded strong specific relationships (R2 > 0.8).

The effect of phytoplankton pigment composition and packaging on the retrieval of chlorophyll-a concentration from satellite observations in the Southern Ocean

ABSTRACTThe Antarctic waters are known to be optically unique and the standard empirical ocean colour algorithms applied to these waters may not address the regional bio-optical characteristics. This article sheds light on the performance of current empirical algorithms and a regionally optimized algorithm (ROA) for the retrieval of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration from Aqua-Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (Aqua-MODIS) and Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) in the Indian Ocean Sector of Southern Ocean (IOSO). Analysis indicated that empirical algorithms used for the retrieval of chl-a concentration from Aqua-MODIS and SeaWiFS underestimate by a factor varying from 2 to 2.9, resulting in underestimation when in situ chl-a exceeds about 0.3 mg m−3. To explain these uncertainties, a study was carried out to understand the effect of phytoplankton pigment composition and pigment packaging on remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs,λ), from the analysis of phytoplankton-specific absorption coefficient (aph,*λ). The spatial variation of phytoplankton groups analysed using diagnostics pigments (DP) indicated shifting of the phytoplankton community structure from offshore to coastal Antarctic, with a significant increasing trend for diatoms and a decreasing trend for haptophytes population. The diatom-dominated population exhibits lower aph,*λ in the 405–510 nm region (with relative flattening in 443–489 nm) compared with the aph,*λ spectra of the haptophytes-dominated population that peaks near 443 nm. The flattening of aph,*λ spectra for the diatom-dominated population was attributed to its larger cell size, which leads to pigment packaging (intracellular shading) and in turn results in higher Rrs,λ. The relationship between pigment composition (normalized by chl-a) and blue:green absorption band ratios (aph,*443:aph,*555 and aph,*489:aph,*555) corresponding to the Aqua-MODIS and SeaWiFS bands showed in-phase associations with most of the pigments such as 19ʹ-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, 19ʹ-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin, peridinin, and zeaxanthin. In contrast, the out-of-phase association observed between the blue:green absorption ratios and fucoxanthin indicated apparent deviations from the general pigment retrieval algorithms, which assumes that blue:green ratios vary in a systematic form with chl-a. The out-of-phase correspondence suggests that the increasing trend of fucoxanthin pigments towards the Antarctic coast was associated with the decreasing trend of blue:green absorption ratios and in turn results in higher Rrs,λ. Therefore, an increase in Rrs,λ leads to underestimation of chl-a from Aqua-MODIS and SeaWiFS in the IOSO region.

VARIABILITY IN PHYTOPLANKTON PIGMENT COMPOSITION IN MERSIN BAY

<div><!--block-->Phytoplankton pigment composition and associated biochemical (chlorophyll a, nitrate+nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, silicate) and physical (temperature, salinity) parameters were studied seasonally in the river-fed eutrophic coastal and oligotrophic offshore waters of the Mersin Bay located on NE Mediterranean. Total chlorophyll a concentrations varied seasonally between 0.023 - 7.73 µg/l in the river fed coastal zone (salinity: 36.54-39.68), exhibiting less seasonality in the offshore station (0.01 – 0.91 µg/l). Seven different phytoplankton taxa (namely diatoms, cyanobacteria, prymnesiophytes, dinoflagellates, chlorophytes, chrysophytes, prochlorophytes), determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), were consistently present in the coastal waters during 2008-2011. The predominant diatom and coccolithophorid taxa in the river-fed coastal waters were replaced by prokaryotic picoplankters (cyanobacteria &amp;amp; prochlorophytes) and prymnesiophytes in the offshore. Contribution of prokaryotic picoplankton and eukaryotic nanoflagellates to total chlorophyll (% 23 to 47 and % 28 to 43, respectively) increased by about 50% from the coastal to the offshore station. Contribution of large cells to total chlorophyll decreased from 49% to 10% towards offshore. Prochlorophytes were observed as the dominant group in relatively colder and darker deep waters.</div>

The size structure and pigment composition of phytoplankton in a semi-enclosed bay, Hong Kong, after a 12-year nutrient reduction

Eutrophication is one of the major factors contributing to the globally increasing occurrence of harmful algal blooms, which may consequently do harms to aquatic lives in the regional ecosystems. Tolo Harbor, a semi-enclosed bay located in the north-eastern part of Hong Kong, has a long history of eutrophication and frequent algal blooms occurrence. This paper presents a 11-month (September 2010–July 2011) examination of the spatial and seasonal variations in the size structure and pigment composition of phytoplankton after 12 years of nutrient reduction. Concentration of chlorophyll a (Chl a) increased landward and the phytoplankton was dominated by algae in the 2–20 and 20–200 μm size fractions. Algal blooms were recorded in the inner part of Tolo Harbor in May (dinoflagellate bloom) and June (diatom bloom) 2011. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed that the composition of phytoplankton pigments varied seasonally, but did not differ between the inner and outer parts of the harbor. The prevalence of fucoxanthin in all size fractions indicated that diatoms were the most dominant phytoplankton taxa. Peridinin, an unambiguous marker of dinoflagellates, appeared sporadically. The presence of cryptophytes, green algae, prymnesiophytes, and cyanobacteria was denoted by the pigments alloxanthin, chlorophyll b, 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, and zeaxanthin, respectively. Nutrient concentrations correlated poorly with Chl a concentrations from micro- (20–200 μm) and nano-sized (2–20 μm) algal cells while temperature affected significantly the pigment concentrations of pico-sized (<2 μm) and taxonomically minor algal groups.

Using empirical orthogonal functions derived from remote-sensing reflectance for the prediction of phytoplankton pigment concentrations

Abstract. The composition and abundance of algal pigments provide information on phytoplankton community characteristics such as photoacclimation, overall biomass and taxonomic composition. In particular, pigments play a major role in photoprotection and in the light-driven part of photosynthesis. Most phytoplankton pigments can be measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques applied to filtered water samples. This method, as well as other laboratory analyses, is time consuming and therefore limits the number of samples that can be processed in a given time. In order to receive information on phytoplankton pigment composition with a higher temporal and spatial resolution, we have developed a method to assess pigment concentrations from continuous optical measurements. The method applies an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis to remote-sensing reflectance data derived from ship-based hyperspectral underwater radiometry and from multispectral satellite data (using the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer – MERIS – Polymer product developed by Steinmetz et al., 2011) measured in the Atlantic Ocean. Subsequently we developed multiple linear regression models with measured (collocated) pigment concentrations as the response variable and EOF loadings as predictor variables. The model results show that surface concentrations of a suite of pigments and pigment groups can be well predicted from the ship-based reflectance measurements, even when only a multispectral resolution is chosen (i.e., eight bands, similar to those used by MERIS). Based on the MERIS reflectance data, concentrations of total and monovinyl chlorophyll a and the groups of photoprotective and photosynthetic carotenoids can be predicted with high quality. As a demonstration of the utility of the approach, the fitted model based on satellite reflectance data as input was applied to 1 month of MERIS Polymer data to predict the concentration of those pigment groups for the whole eastern tropical Atlantic area. Bootstrapping explorations of cross-validation error indicate that the method can produce reliable predictions with relatively small data sets (e.g., &lt; 50 collocated values of reflectance and pigment concentration). The method allows for the derivation of time series from continuous reflectance data of various pigment groups at various regions, which can be used to study variability and change of phytoplankton composition and photophysiology.

Changes in latitude and dominant diazotrophic community alter N2 fixation

ABSTRACT: The contribution of planktonic diazotrophs to the overall N budget is a key unknown in the eastern Indian Ocean. Here we investigated the relationships between dissolved inorganic nutrients, phytoplankton pigment composition, microbial community structure, nitrogen fixation rates and the δ15N of fractionated zooplankton samples along the shelf break of Western Australia (32° to 12° S) in September 2012. Bulk nitrogen fixation rates declined from 4.8 nmol l−1 h−1 in the colder and more saline sub-tropical waters at higher latitudes to 1.5 nmol l−1 h−1 in the warmer and fresher Timor Sea at lower latitudes. A regional bloom of Trichodesmium was identified between 13° and 9° S in the Timor Sea. Trichodesmium-specific N2 fixation rates were 0.05 ± 0.01 nmol colony−1 h−1. Highest dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations occurred at the highest NH4+:NO3− ratios, thereby deviating from the paradigm that greater DIN concentrations come primarily from increased NO3− through advection, mixing or upwelling. Both the microplankton and nanoflagellate fraction declined significantly in warmer waters, with higher DIN concentrations but decreasing % NO3−. A clear increase in the prokaryotic diagnostic pigment zeaxanthin was seen with increasing temperatures from higher to lower latitudes. The microbial community, measured using automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA), clustered strongly according to the water mass biogeochemistry including temperature, salinity, DIN and phosphate concentrations (p < 0.001). Isotope analysis suggested that injections of low δ15N from N2 fixation lowered the zooplankton δ15N signature of animals up to ~500 μm in size and that nearly 47% of the fixed nitrogen was used by zooplankton (≤500 μm fraction) in the Timor Sea.

Remote sensing of size structure of phytoplankton communities using optical properties of the Chukchi and Bering Sea shelf region

Abstract. Recent ocean warming and subsequent sea ice decline resulting from climate change could affect the northward shift of the ecosystem structure in the Chukchi Sea and Bering Sea shelf region (Grebmeier et al., 2006b). The size structure of phytoplankton communities provides an index of trophic levels that is crucial to understanding the mechanisms underlying such ecosystem changes and their implications for the future. This study proposes a new ocean color algorithm for deriving this characteristic by using the region's optical properties. The size derivation model (SDM) estimates the phytoplankton size index FL on the basis of size-fractionated chlorophyll-a (chl-a) using the light absorption coefficient of phytoplankton, aph(λ), and the backscattering coefficient of suspended particles including algae, bbp(λ). FL was defined as the ratio of algal biomass attributed to cells larger than 5 μm to the total. It was expressed by a multiple regression model using the aph(λ) ratio, aph(488)/aph(555), which varies with phytoplankton pigment composition, and the spectral slope of bbp(λ), γ, which is an index of the mean suspended particle size. A validation study demonstrated that 69% of unknown data are correctly derived within FL range of ±20%. The spatial distributions of FL for the cold August of 2006 and the warm August of 2007 were compared to examine application of the SDM to satellite remote sensing. The results suggested that phytoplankton size was responsive to changes in sea surface temperature. Further analysis of satellite-derived FL values and other environmental factors can advance our understanding of ecosystem structure changes in the shelf region of the Chukchi and Bering Seas.

The influence of biotic factors on phytoplankton pigment composition and resources in Baltic ecosystems: new analytical results

Mathematical expressions were derived describing the distribution and concentration of individual phytoplankton pigments with respect to biotic factors in the southern Baltic. Relationships were established between the chlorophyll a concentration and the total phytoplankton biomass (represented by the organic carbon content), as well as between the concentration of marker pigments and the biomasses of the corresponding phytoplankton classes. Knowledge of chlorophyll a concentrations allows the phytoplankton biomass to be estimated with a precision characterised by relative statistical errors according to logarithmic statistics of σ − = ca 56%.
