Research Potentials in Voice Physiology.

This book is a compendium arising from a conference of international scientists held at the State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center, in May 1961 to review phonatory physiology; to discuss neuromuscular mechanisms of hearing and speech; to explore the use of new research tools; and to identify unsolved problems in phonation. Besides chapters on basic anatomy, neurophysiology, and physics, there are chapters on electromyography of the laryngeal muscles of man and high speed photography and stroboscopy. Of special interest to the otolaryngologist are the sections on Relations With Hearing and Speech and on Pathology, Medical and Surgical Aspects.

Voice physiology and the emergence of new vocal styles.

The earliest act performed by a human infant after breathing is instituted is to cry. This first cry is an unconscious reflex act, evoked by the change of temperature, by the stimulation of the air on the skin, and by the light on the eye. During the first weeks the crying continues to be a reflex act, evoked by hunger and pain. Very soon, however, the infant realizes that when he cries his mother comes to feed him, to calm him, and to change his diapers. From now on, crying becomes a conscious, intentional act. As early as around the fifth or sixth week, an observant mother can distinguish between the crying of hunger and pain and the sounds which the infant produces thanks to pleasurable sensations. More and more, the crying is used to express a range of different feelings, is evaluated accordingly, and becomes a source of information for the environment.

Radio's Redefinitions of Voice Sounds

This is the third paper reporting researches carried on for more than thirty years in the arts and sciences pertaining to the human voice. The author's training in the arts has synchronized with developments in the sciences as they advanced from telephone to microphone to “talking pictures” the latter focuses instantly on the need in speech for those recognized technical and tonal standards previously associated solely with music. The magnifying effect of the microphone revealed coincidences in the source sounds of each that, in turn, revealed coincidences in their single natural source with those musical pipes of which it is the prototype. Preceding papers described essential redefinitions of physical-functional conditions in terms of a “voice pipe,” its natural “singing sound,” the technical controls underlying the sequence of sounds with which it “speaks.” A rare recording of these ideals in an unchanged but fully developed boy-voice will be presented. Thus, the Helmholtz theory that “the sensations can be explained on the basis of the laws of physics” arrives at Eddington's figure of speech for physiology of voice can be “explained away” in physics of music by the psychology involved.
